East Central 2010 Football Signings

East Central lands 37 in 2010 football recruiting class

ADA – With an emphasis on increased competitiveness and depth, East Central University head football coach Tim McCarty announced the signing of 37 players for the 2010 season on Wednesday.
“We are happy with this recruiting class. We feel that we addressed several areas of concern as well as lifting the team up to have healthy competitive depth at all positions,” said McCarty, who will be embarking on his second season of his second stint as the Tiger head coach.
Included in this signing class, were eight junior college players and transfers, who came to ECU at the beginning of the semester.

OFFENSE
Among those recruits is 6-foot, 6-inch quarterback Tyler Vanderzee, out of Mt. San Antonio Junior College (Calif.) and 5-11, 205-pound running back and junior college transfer Shomari Grant, who was the leading rusher in Dade County, Fla., as a senior and had committed to the University of Iowa out of high school.
Vanderzee had a pass efficiency rating of 155.0 at Mt. San Antonio and was a Christian League Most Valuable Player in high school.
“He has tremendous ball skills and pocket presence with poise. He has a strong arm and can throw a variety of balls,” McCarty said.
Depth was certainly addressed at the running back spot with the signing of Albert Richard, another junior college transfer, who rushed for 55 touchdowns in high school along with three players out of high school in Miles Jackson, Domonique Massengil and Richard Peoples.
Peoples is the son of former Tiger Richard Peoples.
ECU also nabbed a big tight end in 6-6, 250 Cody Nall, out of Ardmore.
“Cody’s frame allows us to have a big fella with soft hands, along with a great blocking body,” said McCarty.
On the offensive line, the Tigers landed two outstanding junior college tackles in junior Carlos Savala (6-6, 310) , who had originally signed with South Florida, and Rodney Picou (6-6, 310), who was ranked the ninth best offensive lineman in the country and was a U.S. Army All-American as a prep senior. Picou was a redshirt at Nebraska, before transferring to Riverside Community College (Calif.).
“Carlos is a very wide person who is a terrific pass protector and Rodney is a very athletic and dominant offensive lineman,” McCarty said. “Both of these players fell into our lap by word of mouth.”
Also signed for the offensive line was Desmond Farris (6-3, 290), who started on two national championship teams and protected Vanderzee at Mt. San Antonio.
Two high school signees who can make an impact on the offensive line are Kenneth Blake, from Davis, and Eric Gardner, out of Lone Grove.
“Both have size and great promise along with several other signees at that position,” said McCarty.
At receiver, Ricky McMurtrey, from Evans, Ga., is described as a multi-talented player, who played several positions in high school. He is the son of former Tiger Rick McMurtrey.

DEFENSE
Up front, McCarty is expecting big things out of Lonnell Rice (6-6, 280). Rice originally committed to USC and then Kansas State out of junior college.
“He is a superior pass rusher. He also has good speed and an enormous wing span.” McCarty said.
McCarty is also excited about nabbing Brandon Keys (5-11, 315), another junior college transfer, and Lamar Shields (6-3, 270), out of Del City High School, for the defensive line. Shields was ready to sign with Utah State, but decided to stay closer to home.
“Brandon is a straight up physical player. He generates great power along the line of scrimmage,” said McCarty. “Shields is a terrific talent.”
Dalton Hunter, at 6-3, 290, played linebacker in high school, but is also a candidate signed for the defensive line.
“He can run and is a great fit for ECU,” McCarty said.
Two strong linebacker prospects signed out of Oklahoma City include: Jameel Whitney and Ken Berry, who was the No. 2 rated inside linebacker in Oklahoma by Rivals.com.
“We feel fortunate to have landed Jameel. He was courted by Kansas and some other D1 schools. Ken is another great one.”
Those signed for the Tiger secondary include: Dontea Smith, a two-time All-American and Defensive Player of the Year out of Reedley College in Northern California, and Markell Walker, who rewrote the records books for interceptions at tradition-rich Carl Albert High School in Midwest City.
“Dontae is a great playmaker. Markell is very fast with excellent coverage skills,” said McCarty. “Reuben Tiller and Carlos Nazario are the same type of person as Markell in that they are very fast and have excellent coverage skills.”

SPECIAL TEAMS
Matt Berrey transfers in from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College after playing at Purcell High School.
“He can kick the deep ball as well as control his kicks. He will make us a better team,” McCarty said. “We also signed several players who are defensive backs and running backs, who are outstanding return men.

UCO added six players on defense and eight on offense, with 11 recruits coming from Oklahoma and three from Texas.

“This is an extremely athletic class across the board,” said Holland, in his third year at the UCO helm. “Not only is it a very talented group of players, but they are all leaders. West Texas A&M Football Announces 2010 High School Recruiting Class
Buffaloes sign 49 student-athletes to national letters-of-intent

CANYON, Texas - Having compiled 50 wins over the past five seasons, West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel and his staff today announced its 2010 high school recruiting class. The 2010 recruiting class consists of 49 student-athletes who will join the program in the fall and continue tohelp to make the Buffs a force on the Division II football scene.

“We were able to sign another strong academic class of student-athletes with a high percentage qualifying for academic scholarships, as well as athletic scholarships,” said Coach Carthel. “We strive to have a well-rounded class with at least two athletes at each position. It is tough to win championships without a quality senior class each year and this group should provide a good senior class five years from now.”

“Offensively, we signed a good group of athletic linemen that should be able to adapt to the style of blocking necessary to continue running the wide-open offense that has been so successful at us,” Carthel added. “We always try and recruit the best all-around athletes. In most cases, that is the running back. We are excited about the speed and veresatility in this year’s class, as several may end up playing at receiver, defensive back, or return specialist. We feel that we were able to sign the top quarterback in all of West Texas and he already knows how to lead and win football games. Overall, there is a tremendous amount of speed with the receivers and running backs that have signed with us. We should be well-represented at the State track & field meet in Austin later this spring.

“Defensively, this group has lots of potential, with several rangy athletes that should develop into tall, athletic defenders at every position,” Carthel continued. “The linebacking group, as a whole, is very athletic. There are lots of playmakers in the group that will fit our 3-4 scheme. The secondary features skilled athletes that have shown great versatility in multiple sports at their high schools. The defensive linemen were extremely successful in high school and they should develop into a great unit for us. We were able to sign a good mix of interior defensive linemen, along with some athletic ends who can rush the passer.

“It has been a great day for WT Football, and the future looks even brighter!”

Tarleton State 2010 Football Signings

The Tarleton Texan football program has added 26 high school and junior college signees with National Letters-of-Intent on Wednesday. Tarleton also released the names of eight players who have already transferred to Tarleton for the spring semester.

The Texans, who are coming off a 10-3 season, are the reigning Lone Star Conference Co-Champions and LSC South Division Co-Champions. Tarleton advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs for just the second time in school history, and interim head coach Cary Fowler said that helped the recruiting process.

“Making the playoffs and being able to show conference trophies makes a difference,” Fowler said. “When kids see championships and they grow up in the state of Texas, wining is a dream. To see that Tarleton has won over the past decade makes them want to be a part of the success we have had here at Tarleton.”

Fowler said he and the staff were pleased with the recruiting class for 2010.

“How these kids will mature over the next few years will tell the truth about this class,” Fowler said. “I think we are balanced out at every position, and if those kids can stay together for five years, it will be very interesting to see what they will do. I like our athleticism, I like our size and I like our speed.

“We covered the spectrum and the whole state,” Fowler said. “We didn’t really lose anyone we really, really wanted and most of these kids were listed at the top of our board.”

Fowler and the staff contacted each of the signees last night to tell them of the departure of former head coach Sam McElroy, who left to take a NCAA Division I coaching job on Tuesday.

“This is not a knock on anyone, but I told those kids that they signed up to be Tarleton Texans,” Fowler said. “This University sells itself. We have won 73 percent of our ballgames over the last decade. I told them to take football out of the question and asked them to decide where they could go to school over the next four years and be happy. To make sure that they know that no matter who the head coach is, that they choose to go somewhere that is going to be successful. And if you look at it, that is Tarleton State University.”

The Texans will have spring football practice this semester and are tentatively set to open the 2010 schedule on Thursday, Sept. 2 at home against Northeastern State.
