Pondering a reversal of fortune for MSU
Greg Giddings was listening on the radio Monday night when Rashad Austin swished a pair of free throws to give Midwestern State a 78-76 win over Northeastern State. The former MSU player and coach said he rarely looks backward.
“My wife hates that I seemingly refuse to reminisce,” Giddings told me. “That being said, I can still obsess about that game.”
“That game” also came to my mind when the final seconds ticked off the D.L. Ligon scoreboard on Monday. What if Derek Cline’s 28-foot prayer had bounced off the rim back then like Dominique Gaines’ shot just did? That 2003 loss would not have haunted Giddings these past seven years.
That game in Tahlequah turned out to be his last as MSU’s head coach.

Javelinas pick up two commitments. Josh Schneider (QB LaGrange) has committed to Texas A&M-Kingsville. Josh picked the Javelinas over Tarleton State, Eastern New Mexico, UTSA, SFA and Lamar. Also, Payne Neesen (OL Tuloso Midway) has also indicated that he will sign his letter of intent next Wednesday.
Jake Sims (Ath Corpus Christi Carroll) will be heading to Texas State. Midwestern State and Abilene Christian were two LSC schools that were recruiting him.

LSC Preseason Baseball Poll Announced
ACU favored in LSC Baseball preseason rankings
RICHARDSON, Texas – Abilene Christian is the top choice to win the 2010 Lone Star Conference Baseball title as the preseason polls were announced by league officials on Thursday.
The 2010 season starts in early February and the LSC has 12 teams set to compete. For the third year, LSC teams will play an 11-week, single round-robin schedule with a four-game series against every other team. Each series consists of a 7-inning game followed by a 9-inning game on both days.
The regular season champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship shall be the overall LSC Champion. The championship will be played May 1-4 in Abilene, Texas.
ACU received 16 of the 31 first-place votes on the ballots cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives for 352 total points. The Wildcats finished 44-19 overall and 30-14 in conference and won the LSC Championship for the fifth time to reach the South Central Regional in 2009.
Angelo State’s Keith Towne was named the LSC Preseason Player of the Year acclaim.
Towne, a senior first baseman/designated hitter from Katy, Texas, was a consensus All-American second-team choice in 2009 after leading the LSC and finishing second in Division II with 26 home runs. He was named the ABCA South Central Region Player of the Year and All-LSC first team after hitting .351 with 15 doubles along with 86 runs batted in.
ACU’s Brad Rutherford was tabbed LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Rutherford, a junior from Missoula, Mont., was impressive in the closer’s role with a league-best 11 saves and 2.63 ERA in 65 innings pitched. He recorded a 10-3 record out of the bullpen to earn LSC first team, Baseball Writers Association All-American and Rawlings All-Region first team acclaim.

Hills leads Tarleton to rout of ACU

Devon Hills poured in 23 points and 11 different Tarleton State (16-3, 4-0) players scored as the Texans made quick work of Abilene Christian (7-12, 0-4) in an 83-63 rout at Wisdom Gym Wednesday night.
Tarleton stayed unbeaten in the South and won for the 11th time in 12 games, thanks largely to a 28-10 surge over the final 10 minutes of the first half and a 10-1 push to begin the second.
The Texans led by as many as 32 points with just under seven minutes remaining. By that time, Hills was already relaxing on the bench and starting point guard Corin Henry was trying to rest after leaving with an injury to his left knee, which he originally hyperextended in practice almost three weeks ago.
"Corin just aggravated it. That's going to happen from time to time until we can get through the season and he has some time to let it heal," Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman said. "He's going to be okay."
Hills buried his first three attempts from outside the arc and had 15 points at halftime. He scored nine during Tarleton's prolonged run to end the first half, including three on a bomb with five seconds left that seemed to put the nails in ACU's coffin.
"Once I hit my first shot I felt like it was going to be a good shooting night for me," Hills said. "I was able to get it going early and that gave me a lot of confidence."
Joining Hills in double figures was Effran Bryant with 14. Jeremiah Wilson netted nine points and grabbed six rebounds while Donta Smith led everyone in boards with 15 while scoring eight points.
Eddie Thompson led ACU with 24 points, 17 of them coming in the final seven minutes when Tarleton was already on cruise control.
The win leaves the Texans one game ahead of second-place Midwestern State entering the most brutal three-game stretch remaining on their schedule. They travel 300 miles south to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday before back-to-back games against Midwestern next week as part of the LSC's "Rivalry Week."
"It's huge to get to 4-0 because the next three games are all going to be big," Hills said. "Texas A&M-Kingsville is going to be tough (on the road) and Midwestern is playing really well."
Reisman, whose club is outscoring South Division opponents by an average of 22.3 points, couldn't agree more.
"It's extemely important," he said of starting South play with four straight wins. "We have a very challenging next week-and-a-half ahead of us. We're going to have to get well, first of all, and just take it one game at a time through this stretch."

There’s no better way to bounce back from a loss than by knocking off your biggest rival the next time you step on the court.
No. 25 Tarleton State (16-3, 3-1) did just that Wednesday night, leaving behind last Saturday’s disappointing road loss to No. 9 West Texas A&M by knocking off Abilene Christian (12-7, 2-2) 70-64 at Wisdom Gym.
The victory is key not only in the Lone Star Conference South Division race, but in the South Central regional rankings as well. The first poll was released Tuesday with Tarleton ranked No. 6 and ACU No. 9.
Shelby Adamson paved the way, cutting the Wildcat defense apart with aggressive drives to the basket She led all scorers with 20 points, including a driving layup to make it 65-57 just before the one minute mark.
ACU scored five of the next six to pullwithin four at 66-62 with 11.61 seconds on the clock, but Sonya Sundberg was fouled immediately after the ensuing inbound pass and drilled both charity shots to make it 68-62. It was 68-64 before Adamson capped her big night with two from the line with less than a second on the clock.
It was nip and tuck the whole way until the TexAnns scored five straight to turn a two-point edge into a 49-42 lead after a Morgan Stehling trey with 12:30 remaining.
The lead eventually grew to 61-50 before Abilene Christian scored a quick five straight to pull within six.
Adamson was joined in double figures by JoAnne Jones (14), Morgan Stehling (13) and Sonya Sundberg (11) for Tarleton. Sundberg also added five assists and Jones led the team with nine rebounds.
The Wildcats were led by Kelsey Darby-Holson with 17 points and Jamie Meyer with 16 and nine boards. Courtney Laing scored 10 and Jody Meyer had eight points and 10 rebounds.
ACU never led after falling behind 24-21 on a Sundberg three-ball at the 7:10 mark of the first. The Wildcats did battle back to tie the game twice early in the second half. There were seven ties in all.

Southwestern Oklahoma received a verbal commitment from Paul Lopez, a quarterback from St Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, California. Lopez chose the Bulldogs over Eastern Washington, Southern Oregon and Humboldt State.
Mishak Rivas (Weslaco HS) is no longer at Texas State and is looking to transfer to Texas A&M-Kingsville in the fall.

ACU sports briefs: Former pitcher Vancil signs with Mariners
Former Abilene Christian pitcher Preston Vancil has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners and has been invited to their minor league spring training camp.
Vancil, 23, was 6-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 66 1/3 innings of work last summer for the Florence (Ky.) Freedom of the independent Frontier League. He joined the team July 17, two months after his ACU career ended when the Wildcats lost in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament.
In 11 starts with the Freedom, Vancil allowed 42 hits, struck out 61 batters and gave up 44 walks, holding opposing batters to a .182 average. Vancil also threw the first no-hitter in franchise history July 26, when he blanked Traverse City, 5-0.
Last season, Vancil was voted a first team American Baseball Coaches’ Association/Rawlings all-region selection. Vancil was only 5-6 but he posted an ERA of 3.54 while giving up just 49 runs (40 earned) in 101 2/3 innings of work. He ranked in the nation’s top 10 in strikeouts with 108.

ASU, MSU top softball preseason polls
Angelo State and Midwestern State were the top choices for the Lone Star Conference softball divisional titles in 2010 as the preseason polls were announced by league officials on Wednesday.
ASU is the favorite in the LSC South Division, while MSU is the frontrunner to win the LSC North Division.
The 2010 season begins February 1st with non-conference action and the LSC has 14 teams competing with seven in each division. In addition to divisional play, the league will hold its annual crossover tournament March 26-27-28 in Durant, Okla. The top four teams in each division will advance to the LSC Championship, May 6-7-8, in Seguin, Texas.
North Division
Midwestern State is the favorite to claim the Lone Star Conference North Division title. The Mustangs received eight first-place votes on the 17 ballots cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives.
MSU, who posted a 31-17 overall and 13-9 league record last season, totaled 99 points in the poll. The Mustangs have won three North Division titles and two conference championships in the program's six-year history.
Southeastern Oklahoma's Erika Bernal earned LSC North Division Preseason Player of the Year acclaim.
Bernal, a senior outfielder from Arlington, Texas, was a South Central Regional and LSC North first-teamer and claimed North Newcomer of the Year honors in 2009. She hit .330 with 68 hits including 14 homers and nine doubles, while starting all 66 games for the Savage Storm. Bernal had 47 RBI and scored a team-high 49 runs as SE tied the school and conference records with 53 wins.
Cameron's Carrie Harvey was named LSC North Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Harvey, the reigning LSC North Freshman of the Year, led the Aggies with a 19-8 record in the circle. The sophomore from Burkburnett, Texas, had a 2.14 earned run average in 196.2 innings with 174 strikeouts, which ranked amongst the top five in the league.
The top three spots were close as SE, the defending North Division champions, collected six first-place votes to finish second with 95 points, while UCO was third with 92 points and the three remaining first-place nods.
CU was fourth with 77 points, followed by Northeastern State and Southwestern Oklahoma tied in fifth with 38 and East Central seventh with 37.

ASU, who won the LSC Championship for the third straight time in 2009, went 50-10 and advanced to the national semifinals last season. The Rambelles made their second NCAA Division II National Championship appearance in three seasons after hosting the South Central Regional for the third straight season. ASU has won five South Division titles and four conference crowns.
Texas A&M-Kingsville's Cassie Anderson was tabbed LSC South Division Preseason Player of the Year.
Anderson, a senior outfielder from Splendora, Texas, led the league with an impressive .437 batting average, including a TAMUK and LSC record 26-game hitting streak, to earn LSC South and Daktronics All-American first team honors. She led the Javelina offense in nearly every category en route to setting school records for batting average and on-base percentage (.485). She was also a NFCA South Central Region first-team and NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-American second-team selection in 2009.
ASU's Chelsea Nelson claimed LSC South Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors.
Nelson, a senior from Highland Village, Texas, posted a 31-6 record with a 2.47 ERA, 176 strikeouts, three shutouts and three saves in 238 innings last season. She made 44 appearances with 34 stars and 24 complete games to earn Daktronics first team plus NFCA all-region and LSC South second-team acclaim. She was named 2009 LSC South Newcomer of the Year.
Abilene Christian, the defending South Division champions, finished right behind ASU in the poll with 122 points and five first-place votes, while West Texas A&M was third with 88 points and the remaining first-place nod.
Tarleton State was fourth with 69 points, followed by TAMUK in fifth with 66, Texas Woman's sixth with 54 and Eastern New Mexico seventh with 29.

Another tough game ahead for Mustangs
For the second time in three days, Midwestern State coach Grant McCasland will try to come up with a way to stop a Lone Star Conference team’s 1-2 punch.
The Mustangs didn’t have much luck trying to defend Dominique Gaines and Jason Jones on Monday night. The Northeastern State pair combined for 52 points, but the Mustangs still escaped with a 78-76 win — their 21st straight victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Tonight, No. 10 MSU will be focused on Antwan Mullins and Flavio Milam when it tips off against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8 p.m. under the Dome. Mullins, a 5-9 junior point guard, leads Kingsville with a 13.1 scoring average. Milam, a 6-5 senior forward, averages 12.8 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds.
Either Mullins or Milam have been the Javelinas’ top scorer in 13 games this year. In a 97-91 overtime win at home over Angelo State last Saturday, Milam scored 29 and Mullins scored 22.
“We played against Flavio when I was coaching Midland (junior college), and he is a guy who can go make plays,” McCasland said. “He is a big wing who is versatile and does a lot of things well.

SWO HALL OF FAME TO INDUCT FOUR ON FEB. 6
WEATHERFORD – A day of celebrating some of the greatest players from Southwestern Oklahoma State University rich and storied history will take place Saturday, Feb. 6 when four new members will be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
The 2010 inductees include: Leonard “Tex” Selvidge, a football star for the Bulldogs in the mid 1950’s; Bennie Beutler, longtime stock producer for the SWOSU rodeo, Todd Helton, a NAIA football All-American in 1989, George Hauser, legendary men’s basketball coach of 27 years for the Bulldogs.
The new class will be honored for their achievements on and off the playing fields at a luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Memorial Student Center Ballroom. The festivities will be held in conjunction with the Bulldog’s basketball game against Cameron later that day.
Tickets for the luncheon are $20 and available now by calling the SWOSU Athletic Department at 580-774-3068.
The SWOSU Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1962 and honors those individuals who, by outstanding achievement in athletics or service to the college’s sports teams, have made lasting contributions to the cause of sports at the school.

Another tough game ahead for Mustangs
For the second time in three days, Midwestern State coach Grant McCasland will try to come up with a way to stop a Lone Star Conference team’s 1-2 punch.
The Mustangs didn’t have much luck trying to defend Dominique Gaines and Jason Jones on Monday night. The Northeastern State pair combined for 52 points, but the Mustangs still escaped with a 78-76 win — their 21st straight victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Tonight, No. 10 MSU will be focused on Antwan Mullins and Flavio Milam when it tips off against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8 p.m. under the Dome. Mullins, a 5-9 junior point guard, leads Kingsville with a 13.1 scoring average. Milam, a 6-5 senior forward, averages 12.8 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds.
Either Mullins or Milam have been the Javelinas’ top scorer in 13 games this year. In a 97-91 overtime win at home over Angelo State last Saturday, Milam scored 29 and Mullins scored 22.
“We played against Flavio when I was coaching Midland (junior college), and he is a guy who can go make plays,” McCasland said. “He is a big wing who is versatile and does a lot of things well.

The Mustangs, despite shooting horribly, rallied from eight points down against Northeastern State in the final 5 ½minutes and won 78-76 when Rashad Austin hit two pressure-packed free throws with just 1.7 seconds left on the clock.
The River Hawks hit a dozen 3-pointers — five by Dominique Gaines — but lost when Gaines misfired from behind the arc in the final seconds and Jesse Scroggins fouled Austin in a battle for the rebound.
No. 11 MSU raised its record to 17-1 and ended a seven-game win streak for 13-6 Northeastern.

ECU scored 16 points in the final 3:09 against RiverHawk reserves once Northeastern State had built a 73-51 cushion. The two opponents made only three 3-point field goals in 28 attempts (10.7). She also contributed five steals and dished out a team-leading nine assists. She shot 59.1 percent from the field in the two games. Against Midwestern State, Unruh was 7 of 14 from the field and 7 of 10 from the charity stripe to finish with 21 points, her first 20-plus outing in her career. She led all rebounders against Tarleton with eight boards and also tallied 15 points, four steals and five assists in that game. Unruh currently leads the team in assists and steals this season.

ACU alum Johnny Knox picked for Pro Bowl
Chicago Bears receiver Johnny Knox, a former Abilene Christian University standout, was added to the NFC Pro Bowl roster Monday, replacing Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin as the NFC’s kick returner.
Harvin, the first alternate at kick returner, made the team because Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson was voted onto the roster at receiver and kick returner. The NFL decided to fill the spot at which he received the fewest votes with another player. But when Harvin was scratched from the roster due to injury, it left the spot open for Knox, the second alternate to the Pro Bowl.
Knox, a rookie, was a bright spot this season for a struggling Bears team. He caught 45 passes for 527 yards and five scores and led the Bears (7-9) in kickoff returns, racking up 32 returns for 927 yards, including a 102-yard touchdown return against the Detroit Lions.
A&M-Kingsville hires women's golf coach
Noel Allen has been hired as Texas A&M-Kingsville first women’s golf coach, athletics director Ken Oliver announced Monday.
After a national search, Allen was hired to coach the university’s first golf team since 1982, which was the last year the Javelinas fielded a men’s team.
“Allen is exactly the type of person we were looking for to start our women’s golf program,” Oliver said. “She brings the energy, enthusiasm and experience that will put the women’s golf program on the fast track to competing for Lone Star Conference championships.”

CANYON - Lonn Reisman picked up his 450th win as head men's basketball coach at Tarleton State Saturday night, as his Texans (15-3, 3-0) upended West Texas A&M 69-56 in Lone Star Conference South Division play.
The Texans, winners of 10 of their last 11, won for the fifth time in their last six trips to the First United Bank Center and stayed unbeaten in the South. They handed WT its first home loss of the season. The Buffs were previously 8-0 at home. The all-time series between the schools is now even at 16 wins each.
If win No. 450 couldn't come back at home at Wisdom Gym, Reisman says he couldn't have picked a better spot for it to come on the road.
"It is a sweet feeling to do it here against a program that's been tremendous in our conference for many years," Reisman said. "I give God all the glory and thank Him for all he's he's done for my career and in my life."
It took a second half surge by the Texans for Reisman to reach the milestone win, as Devon Hills tied the contest at 31-31 with a three just before the first-half buzzer and Tarleton scored 17 of the first 21 after the break to make it 48-35.
WT regrouped and stormed back with an 8-0 surge, but just when it appeared the Buffaloes had the momentum, Tarleton answered.
It was 48-43 until Effran Bryant, who led all scorers with 19, scored five points as part of a 11-0 Texan run that pushed the lead to 59-43.
Donta Smith had what Reisman called the biggest basket of the night during the run, grabbing an offensive rebound and slamming down a thunderous dunk that appeared to put an exclamation mark on the Tarleton win.
"It was a signature dunk that said we weren't going to lose tonight," Reisman said. "The whole team, both on the court and all the way down the bench, felt it. That's when we put the hammer down, I thought."
The Texan lead grew to 18 at 61-43 before WT scored 11 of the final 17 in the closing minutes.
Tarleton shot an impressive 68.4 percent in the second half to finish 59 percent from the floor for the game. WT, which was led by Joe Mincey with 18 points, shot 41.3 percent for the night.
Hills, who scored 16, was huge in the opening half. He scored seven straight on his own to give the Texans a 23-21 edge after WT had rebounded from an early 6-0 hole to take a 21-16 lead.
Tarleton was up 6-0 at the start because of back-to-back treys by Bryant.
Tarleton, which is alone in first place in the LSC South, returns home Wednesday for a battle against rival Abilene Christian.

CANYON - No. 11 West Texas A&M (19-2, 3-1) saw a 17-point lead all but disappear but held on to knock off No. 24 Tarleton State (15-3, 2-1) 74-69 in Lone Star Conference South Division women's action at the First United Bank Center Saturday afternoon.
West Texas A&M led 53-36 with 14:54 remaining before Tarleton began to chip away, pulling within three at 68-65 with 47 seconds left. The Lady Buffs held on, however, connecting on six straight free throw attempts in the final 32 seconds to seal the deal.
The win was the 13th in 14 games for WT, while Tarleton, which hasn't won in Canyon since 2000, saw its streak of three straight victories snapped. The Lady Buffs are now alone in first place in the LSC South, while Tarleton is tied with Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville just half a game back. The TexAnns host ACU Wednesday night.
Jamie Simmons poured in 22 points to lead WT, which shot 54.3 percent from the floor. Megan McLain scored 18, Joni Unruh had 17 and Holly Isaacs added 10, giving the Lady Buffaloes four in double figures.
Tarleton, which led 9-0 at the start before being outscored by 14 the rest of the first half, was led by Morgan Stehling with 18 and JoAnne Jones with 16 while Shelby Adamson added 12.
The Lady Buffs' first lead came with 9:07 remaining in the opening half when Simmons hit a jumper to make it 15-14. Tarleton led just once more the rest of the way at 20-19. The score was tied at 27-27 before WT went on a 9-0 run to capture the momentum. Tarleton scored four straight to pull within five before Isaacs was true on a layup with only three seconds on the clock to make it 38-31 at the half.
Tarleton scored the first three points of the second before the Lady Buffs began their stampede, scoring 15 of the next 17 to build an insurmountable 53-36 lead.
The TexAnns slowly cut into the deficit, finally pulling within seven when a Stehling lay-in made it 61-54 with 6:16 still to play. But WT scored the next five to jump back ahead by 12.
The Lady Buffs led 68-60 until a three by Tarleton's Sundberg and a two by Stehling had the TexAnns down by just three with 47 seconds left, but WT clinched the win with its late free throw parade.

Consistency, integrity and winning: Lasting legacy
Five years later, they all have adjusted to life after football.
That may surprise some who assumed football was their life. For parts of four decades — starting in the early 1970s — Jerry Vandergriff, Mike Martin and Si Southall coached football at Angelo State University. Tim Reid joined them in 1982.
They built a unique football program marked by consistency, integrity and winning. They put up 29 winning records in the 34 seasons since Vandergriff arrived first in 1971. They helped win an NAIA national championship in 1978. They guided three ASU teams to the NAIA playoffs and four Rams teams to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
In the 1980s, they presided over the winningest college football program in Texas at any level.
But in 2004, following a third consecutive losing season, Vandergriff resigned as head coach.
“We had reached that point where it was time for something to happen,” Vandergriff said. “If I hadn’t done it, someone else would have had to.”
ENMU football schedule set for 2010
Eastern New Mexico University’s 2010 football schedule has been announced as the Greyhounds prepare to move from the Lone Star Conference’s South Division into the North Division for the first time.
The Hounds, who went 3-8 overall and 0-6 in the South in 2008, will have six home games, beginning with the Aug. 28 opener against NAIA member Southern Nazarene (6-5 last season), a perennial contender in the Central States Football League.

Record-breaking Greyhounds QB dismissed from team
Record-breaking sophomore quarterback Eastern New Mexico University J.J. Harp has been dismissed from the football team, according to Greyhounds coach Mark Ribaudo.
Ribaudo declined to discuss the reason Harp was dismissed. He said he was let go Tuesday. ENMU sports information director Adam Pitterman said Harp was dismissed for violating university policy.
Harp, from Argyle, Texas, passed for 4,367 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, both school records. He set all-division NCAA records in single-game pass attempts (94) and single-game completions (64) in a 49-47 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma. He set NCAA Division II records with 695 passing yards and 681 yards of total offense in the same game.
Harp and three teammates were suspended for a game during the season for what Ribaudo called a “violation of team rules.”
Harp could not be reached for comment.
The Hounds had four other quarterbacks listed on their 2009 roster, including last year’s backup, freshman Wes Wood of Muleshoe.
Ribaudo said he was not sure if Harp’s dismissal would affect the Hounds’ recruiting.
“We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Buffs try to hand MSU second loss of season
The Midwestern State Mustangs opened men's Lone Star Conference play last week by losing to Angelo State. Tonight, it will be the West Texas A&M Buffs who receive the chore of playing a ticked off Midwestern State squad, which happens to be regarded as the best team in the LSC men's race.
"I can promise you they are very aggressive and their transition offense is very, very good," said WT coach Rick Cooper when asked of his opinion on Midwestern State. "We do have our work cut out for us."

The Rams look to get back on track and move back over .500 in LSC South play tonight when they travel to Kingsville to face the Javelinas. ... ASU is coming off a 78-62 loss to Tarleton State on Saturday. LaMarshall Corbett led the Rams with 25 points. Shavar Burch added 12. Derrick Webster and Johnny Barnes each had seven rebounds to lead the team. ... Kingsville is coming off a 72-62 loss to Eastern New Mexico on Saturday. ... ENMU beat the Texans 77-72 in overtime at Greyhound Arena in the regular-season finale in February 2007. That was the Hounds’ last South win until beating Abilene Christian last week to open division play. It’s also the only win for ENMU over Tarleton in the last 23 meetings. The Texans lead the all-time series 25-7, including 14-2 at Stephenville. … Tarleton leads the LSC in scoring defense (56.4 ppg) and FG percentage defense (35.8), and ranks second in scoring margin (14.7) and 3-point FG percentage (30.7). … Scoring leaders for the Texans are 5-11 junior G Corin Henry (11.9 ppg), 6-8 senior F Jeremiah Wilson (11.7) and 6-4 junior G Devon Hllls (11.6). MSU seeks to bounce back
The basketball season is only two months old, and first-year head coach Grant McCasland is about to find out something about his Midwestern State team that he hasn’t had to learn in the first 66 days on the job — how it rebounds from a loss.
That’s both literally and figuratively.
After winning their first 14 games, the Mustangs finally lost last week, 84-76, on the road at Angelo State.
Not good timing since this was the first of 12 important Lone Star Conference South Division games.
“If practices are any indication — and you don’t know if they are until you go play — we have improved on the glass,” said McCasland, whose team was out-rebounded 45-30 in the loss to ASU.

After one week of divisional play, six men's and four women's teams have jumped to the top of the standings with perfect conference records. Teams are competing for one of 16 spots, eight on both the men’s and women’s side, in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Bartlesville, Okla., March 3-7.
The LSC men have a 134-94 overall record so far this season, including a 71-43 mark in the South Division and 63-51 in the North. In league crossover play the South has the advantage, 26-22. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 24-11 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 3-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
In men’s games played last week, the LSC had one player score more than 30 points, eight over the 20-point mark and eight double-digit rebounders, while six recorded double-doubles.

Gaines helped lead Northeastern State to a 3-0 week by scoring 71 points, 54 of those coming in a pair of LSC North Division contests. For the week, the 6-3 junior guard connected on 18-of-36 shots from the field (.500), was 5-of-12 from the arc (.417) and 30-of-40 from the charity stripe (.750). After a 17-point output against Rhema (68-33 win) where he played 28 minutes, Gaines came back to score a career-high 32 points in a 70-62 decision at Cameron, which snapped the Aggies’ eight-game home winning streak. Gaines was 6-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-4 from the arc and made 17-of-21 free throws. He narrowly missed a rare triple-double with 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the RiverHawks’ 70-66 win at home against Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday. NSU is 11-5 overall, 2-0 in LSC North action, and has won its last five outings.

Williams had another dominating week, especially on the defensive end, as UCO opened LSC North Division play with a pair of easy wins. The junior guard averaged 8.5 defensive rebounds (9.0 overall), 4.0 steals and 1.5 blocked shots in routs of East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma while adding 21.0 points and 6.0 assists a contest. Lady Buffs seek new start after seeing win streak end
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs will try to start another basketball win streak when they meet Midwestern State today at Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls. WT had its 11-game win streak snapped at Abilene Christian on Saturday as it dropped to 1-1 in the Lone Star Conference South Division.
The Lady Buffs are 31-8 all-time against Midwestern State and have won 10 straight meetings dating to Feb. 2, 2004. WT is playing its second straight road game and is in the midst of a six-game stretch in which the Lady Buffs will play four road games.
''We treat every division game as a big one, and this is no different,'' Lady Buffs head coach Krista Gerlich said. ''We haven't had to come back from a loss very often this season. Our goal is to go there and try to take care of business and come away with a win.''
Javelinas women seek ninth straight home win
The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team goes after its ninth consecutive home victory tonight when it hosts Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference South Division game at the Steinke Physical Education Center. A&M-Kingsville’s men, meanwhile, face the Rams and are attempting to snap a five-game skid and revive an offense that has struggled of late. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. followed by the men.
The women (13-4) are coming off a 77-61 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday to improve to 1-1 in the South.
“As long as we play good enough to win, that’s what counts. I think we’re back on the upswing,” A&M-Kingsville women’s coach Scott Hyland said.
“Right before Christmas we were really playing well. We did some really good things up in Austin at the tournament there against Texas A&M-International and St. Ed’s. At times we looked really good.”

The LSC women are 134-102 overall, with a 75-41 mark in the South and 59-61 in the North this season. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 38-18 record over its North opponents. She went 10-for-11 from the free-throw line against Cameron and a perfect 4-for-4 against SWOSU. Five times in 2009-10, she has made all of her free throw attempts.

She also added two key blocks in the first half to help the Pioneers build a 12-point halftime lead and added two steals in the second half as TWU built a 24-point lead. Weaver also had a team-high 12 points and 7 rebounds (5 defensive) in LSC Crossover game against Tarleton State. TWU started 2-0 in the conference for the first time since 2006-07 season.

Meyer filled up the stat sheet in ACU’s third straight home victory against West Texas A&M, hitting 7 of 12 shots from the field for 19 points, converting all five of her free throw attempts, collecting 13 rebounds (seven offensive boards), two assists and two blocked shots.

Tarleton had allowed Angelo State to pull within four points (18-14) with 7:32 left in the first-half on Saturday until Sundberg forced a turnover and a steal that led to a 6-0 run by the TexAnns. The run helped propel the TexAnns to a 14-point halftime lead and an eventual LSC South Divison-opening win (61-35). Sundberg was mostly responsible for guarding ASU’s leading scorer, and held her to just nine points on 3-of-13 shooting, with three of her nine points coming from the foul line. Sundberg and the TexAnns held ASU to just .220 shooting on the night and their lowest point total in over 33 years when Stephen F. Austin held ASU to 32 points back in 1976-77. Sundberg then went on to hold a TWU guard to just seven points, which was almost half her average, in Tarleton’s 71-50 win over the Pioneers on Monday. She had 10 steals for the week with three against UTPB, three versus ASU and four at TWU.

Buffs will open season against Grand Valley St.
The 2010 football season for the West Texas A&M Buffs features a season-opener at the second-best team in the nation last year and five teams that qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Buffs kick off the season Sept. 2 at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich., home of the Lakers, who opened the 2009 season with a 37-23 win over the Buffs at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. GVSU fell to Northwest Missouri State, 30-23, for the D-II national title, and returns nine starters on both sides of the ball. Matt Mitchell was named head coach at GVSU earlier this month, replacing Chuck Martin, who resigned to be defensive backs coach at Notre Dame.

The Midwestern State Mustangs opened men's Lone Star Conference play last week by losing to Angelo State. Tonight, it will be the West Texas A&M Buffs who receive the chore of playing a ticked off Midwestern State squad, which happens to be regarded as the best team in the LSC men's race.
"I can promise you they are very aggressive and their transition offense is very, very good," said WT coach Rick Cooper when asked of his opinion on Midwestern State. "We do have our work cut out for us."

The basketball season is only two months old, and first-year head coach Grant McCasland is about to find out something about his Midwestern State team that he hasn’t had to learn in the first 66 days on the job — how it rebounds from a loss.
That’s both literally and figuratively.
After winning their first 14 games, the Mustangs finally lost last week, 84-76, on the road at Angelo State.
Not good timing since this was the first of 12 important Lone Star Conference South Division games.
“If practices are any indication — and you don’t know if they are until you go play — we have improved on the glass,” said McCasland, whose team was out-rebounded 45-30 in the loss to ASU.

After a 17-point output against Rhema (68-33 win) where he played 28 minutes, Gaines came back to score a career-high 32 points in a 70-62 decision at Cameron, which snapped the Aggies’ eight-game home winning streak. Gaines was 6-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-4 from the arc and made 17-of-21 free throws. He narrowly missed a rare triple-double with 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the RiverHawks’ 70-66 win at home against Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday. Tarleton had allowed Angelo State to pull within four points (18-14) with 7:32 left in the first-half on Saturday until Sundberg forced a turnover and a steal that led to a 6-0 run by the TexAnns. The run helped propel the TexAnns to a 14-point halftime lead and an eventual LSC South Divison-opening win (61-35). Sundberg was mostly responsible for guarding ASU’s leading scorer, and held her to just nine points on 3-of-13 shooting, with three of her nine points coming from the foul line. Sundberg and the TexAnns held ASU to just .220 shooting on the night and their lowest point total in over 33 years when Stephen F. Austin held ASU to 32 points back in 1976-77. Sundberg then went on to hold a TWU guard to just seven points, which was almost half her average, in Tarleton’s 71-50 win over the Pioneers on Monday. She had 10 steals for the week with three against UTPB, three versus ASU and four at TWU.

Buffs will open season against Grand Valley St.
The 2010 football season for the West Texas A&M Buffs features a season-opener at the second-best team in the nation last year and five teams that qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Buffs kick off the season Sept. 2 at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich., home of the Lakers, who opened the 2009 season with a 37-23 win over the Buffs at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. GVSU fell to Northwest Missouri State, 30-23, for the D-II national title, and returns nine starters on both sides of the ball. Matt Mitchell was named head coach at GVSU earlier this month, replacing Chuck Martin, who resigned to be defensive backs coach at Notre Dame.

Shavar Burch is back and so are the Angelo State Rams.
Picked to finish second in the Lone Star Conference South Division in the preseason, the ASU men’s basketball team went into Wednesday’s division opener against unbeaten No. 7 Midwestern State with a mediocre 8-6 record.
The Rams needed a strong showing against the defending LSC champion Mustangs to serve notice to the rest of the division that they are the team to be reckoned with like they were predicted to be.
The Rams got that strong showing and made the loudest statement in the conference so far this season.

ACU begins indoor track off and running under new coach
The Roosevelt Lofton era gets under way today for the Abilene Christian track and field program, as the men’s and women’s teams open the indoor season at the University of Houston’s Leonard Hilton Invitational.
Lofton takes over a program that’s been one of the best in Division II — winning a total of 51 national titles both indoors and outdoors since 1982. Yet Lofton, a former Grambling and Virginia Tech coach, isn’t worried about living up to the past.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” he said. “I’m just trying to start off right, and hopefully we can make our own legacy.”
Lofton replaces Don D. Hood, who stepped down in June after four years as the Wildcats’ coach for a similar job at Brownwood High School.

Recruiting Update - Junior College Transfers
FOOTBALL ADDS JUNIOR COLLEGE PLAYERS TO ROSTER
WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- Southwestern Oklahoma State University has announced that 12 student-athletes have transferred and enrolled in the college to play football next season with the Bulldogs. Second-year coach Dan Cocannouer and his staff revealed the list Wednesday with their eye cast towards immediate needs with 10 of the 12 hailing from California area junior colleges. SWOSU, which finished 2009 with a 1-10 record, started no fewer than 10 different freshmen at one time or another last season. The Bulldogs 54-player travel roster was made up of 27 freshmen during the final two road games.

“We needed to get older and in a hurry,” Cocannouer said. “With the amount of freshman and sophomores we already have in place, it was important to add kids that can provide some leadership and experience.”
Cocannouer said his staff spent considerable time pouring over lists and watching hours of film from junior colleges in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and California.
“This group of players met all the criteria we were looking for when we started this process,” Cocannouer said. “They are all good character guys and someone who really wants to be here and work with us to make our program better.”

Kemaine Thurston, DL, 6-1, 285, Jr., San Bernardino Valley College.. Two-year starter for SBVC where he helped the Wolverines to a 5-5 record which included four-straight victories and a 29-21 season-ending victory over Los Angeles Harbor…Graduate of Arroyo Valley High School where he was a three-year starter and also a member of the school’s varsity wrestling team.
Terrence Humes, OL, 6-5, 320, Jr., San Bernardino Valley College…Started 20 consecutive games for SBVC at right tackle…Graduate of San Bernardino High school where he was a two-time all league selection and selected as the team’s lineman of the year in 2005.
Isaac Tucker, RB, 5-10, 195, Jr., Citrus College…Team’s leading rusher as both a freshman and sophomore…Rushed for nearly 800 yards during his career, including back-to-back seasons with an identical 395 yards…Played in a California Junior College All-Star game…Graduate of West Covina High School where he was named the team’s offensive MVP as a senior.
Mike Van Deripe, QB, 6-0, 180, Jr., Golden West College…All-time leading passer in Golden West College history with over 5,000 career yards…Earned American Division Mountain Conference first-team quarterback selection in 2009 when he completed 215-of-361 passes for 2,826 yards and 27 touchdowns…Led GWC to its first post-season appearance in 34 years with a 37-36 win over Ventura College…Graduate of Cypress College where he was a first team, all-conference selection and threw for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior…Also rushed for 1,100 yards and scored 11 rushing TDs.
Tommy Cogburn, 5-8, 183, Jr., Golden West College…Played both defensive back and wide receiver for the GWC…Finished year with 29 tackles and two interceptions…Caught four passes for 83 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown against San Diego Southwest….Graduate of South El Monte High School where he was an all-league selection.
Jonathan Darby, 6-0, 200, Jr., DB, Grossmont College…Finished 2009 as the second-leading tackler for Grossmount with 57 stops with four interceptions and a fumble recovery…Team finished with an 8-3 record and participated in the U.S. Bank Beach Bowl where they beat El Camino, 27-22…Graduate of West Hills High School in San Diego.

With Lone Star Conference South Division play opening tonight, West Texas A&M men's basketball coach Rick Cooper is focused on his team.
Not on Midwestern State and that gaudy 14-0 record. Not on Tarleton State having run off seven straight wins entering South play. And not on Texas A&M-Kingsville with 10 wins and a defense that ranks second in the conference, allowing 64,5 points per game.
"It's on our team," said Cooper, who has led the WT program for 17 years. "Basketball is a little different than other sports. For instance, in football when those guys wake up on Sunday they know who that one team is they are playing next. In basketball, you have to prepare for so many different opponents, the smart thing to do is focus in on yourself and figure out what you do best and the identity you want to have and that makes you the most successful."

If that is the case, the 12th-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs hope to extend their 10-game win streak into Lone Star Conference South Division play at 6 p.m. today when they host a Texas A&M-Kingsville team that has won 12 of its 15 games.The Lady Buffs were a prohibitive favorite to win their fifth straight South Division title in a preseason poll of coaches, sports information directors and media representatives. A&M-Kingsville was picked fifth but has the third-best record and ranks first in the conference in scoring and fourth in defense.

Once a Division I football signee, the former El Pasoan went from almost being out of college football completely to being a vital playmaker at Tarleton State University.
"Scott was a three-year starter for us and has set numerous records here at Tarleton and led us two rounds deep into the Division II playoffs in (2009)," Texans head coach Sam McElroy said. "He was a captain and a tremendous player for us."
