Breaking News - WTAM nullifying all but one game

from the WT website

Five WTAMU Football Games to Be Nullified for 2014 LSC Playoff Seedings

CANYON, Texas  – West Texas A&M Director of Athletics Michael McBroom has notified the Lone Star Conference that the football program played an academically ineligible student-athlete the first seven weeks of the season.  Upon receipt last week of evidence of an alleged academic violation that occurred during summer of 2014, the department in a precautionary move withheld the student-athlete from the game versus Texas A&M-Kingsville.

As a result of its findings, the university requested the LSC apply a nullification penalty prior to the conference playoffs.  Subsequently, the LSC nullified the five WT league games in which the academically ineligible student-athlete participated.  For the purposes of playoff seeding, the nullification process determined by the LSC will only affect WT's conference win percentage.

"It was the appropriate action for us at this time," McBroom stated.  "Dr. O'Brien and I have been in discussions with the Lone Star Conference over the last two days regarding this matter.  As a result of our ineligible player, we did not want to affect the seeding of our conference peers that would have an adverse impact on their ability to play for the LSC playoff title and also impact their selection criteria for the NCAA playoffs.   Therefore, we requested the LSC to apply a penalty to our record immediately and adjust our playoff seeding accordingly.  We fully support the decision of the Commissioner."

The Buffs play their LSC regular-season finale versus Eastern New Mexico on Saturday night at Blackwater Draw, N.M.

WT President: coach 'not with with WT anymore'

By Mollie Bryant
West Texas A&M University President J. Patrick O’Brien said assistant football coach Joel Hinton is no longer part of the team following allegations of academic fraud among two Buff football players.
“We work very hard to have a program with integrity, and obviously somebody made a bad mistake, and there are consequences associated with bad mistakes,” O’Brien said Tuesday afternoon.

Ex-kicker alleges West Texas A&M studies fraud

Sophomore says he did receiver's classwork

West Texas A&M University’s athletic director confirmed Monday the university has launched an investigation into the school’s football program after allegations surfaced that another player’s parents took a Spanish test for one of the team’s star players.

Sophomore Jose Azarte Jr., who was a backup placekicker on the Buffs football team until Oct. 13, said he informed WT officials and the NCAA two weeks ago that he completed homework and assignments for Anthony Johnson, a starting wide receiver.

Breaking News - Texas A&M Kingsville relieves David Calloway of duties as head coach

From the TAMUK website

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Football) – David Calloway has been relieved of his duties as Head Football Coach at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (1-5, 0-4 LSC), TAMUK Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Campus Recreation Scott Gines announced Monday evening.

Gines appointed Texas A&M-Kingsville offensive line coach and former Javelina All-American Jaime Martinez as interim head coach through the completion of the 2014 regular season.

"Although mid-year leadership change is not common, the competitive trajectory of our program must intensify," Gines said. "Many factors go into whether a head coach succeeds or fails in scoreboard results. Coach Calloway enthusiastically took the reins of this program, installing accountability measures and serving as a passionate teacher-coach. His character, commitment and work ethic are unquestioned."

A national search will be conducted immediately and led by Parker Executive Search (Atlanta, Ga.).

Gines informed Calloway of his decision Monday afternoon, and then spoke to the rest of the coaching staff and the 2014 Javelina football team.  "Our university is home to conference and national champions; our traditions ignite pride and high expectations for success; and, I am grateful for the Javelina fans, alumni, and donors who faithfully support our coaches and players," Gines stated.

Martinez is in his 10th season as the offensive lines coach and recruiting coordinator
