Tarleton State at UT Permian Basin
The Falcons got their first D2 and LSC win last week, topping Western New Mexico 41-32 in Silver City. UTPB took advantage of a plus three turnover margin and responded to every WNMU threat in the second half. They will have a much tougher task this week, facing a Tareton State squad that is getting better with each passing week. The Texans built a 30-7 lead over WTAM with 12 minutes to play before WT got a couple of late TDs to make the score more respectable. The running game is rounding into form, picking up 240 yards last week, and now averaging 165 per game. This won't be a walkover, but the Texans are solid favorites. TSU 28-14
Texas A&M-Kingsville at Angelo State
Similar to last year, Texas A&M Kingsville is coming off back to back losses to nationally ranked MSU and TAMC. However last year's squad was a play away from winning each of those games, while this year both losses have been by decisive margins. The offense is still trying to find its way, and the defense has allowed opponents to get on the board early, increasing the pressure on the offense. The Rams are also in a two game downturn, committing seven turnovers in the losses. Other than the turnovers, they have put up good offensive numbers, 483 yards and 33 points per game. The defense is allowing just 306 yards, but has been put in some tough spots. If Angelo can hang on to the ball, they should take this one. ASU 24-21
Western New Mexico at Midwestern State - Rout of the week
With the LSC's most prolific QB returning, WNMU was expected to make some noise in 2017. So far, that has not been the case as the Mustangs are winless, dropping last week's game to UTPB, becoming the first LSC and D2 team to lose to the Falcons. Javia Hall once again leads the LSC in passing, with 413 yards per game, but has also thrown 9 interceptions. As a team, the Mustangs have turned the ball over 20 times, while getting just 4 from their opponents. They'll face the Mustangs from Midwestern State, who are playing in just their third game this season. Look for them to put up some impressive offensive numbers while keeping WNMU in check. MSU 45-21
Wagon Wheel Game
This is a fun game, especially with the Greyhounds upping their game in recent years. Heck it was fun when WT was nationally ranked and ENMU was struggling, as the Greyhounds made the Buffs work hard, even stealing an occasional game and causing great angst in the panhandle. Kamal Cass had his best game of 2017 last week against Angelo State, but faces a WT defense allowing just 116 yards rushing. The Buffs will need more production from their offense, last in the LSC in yards (292) and second to last in scoring (18.5). ENMU takes the Wheel back to Portales, ENMU 35-21
No. 3 Lions earn sixth straight Chennault Cup with 38-7 win over Javelinas
The No. 3 Texas A&M-Commerce football team scored the first three touchdowns of the game and held Texas A&M-Kingsville to 216 yards of offense on the way to a 38-7 victory, winning the Chennault Cup for the sixth consecutive year.

Tarleton won its third straight game with a convincing 30-20 victory over rival West Texas A&M on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The Texans (3-1, 2-0) recorded their first win over the Buffs (2-2, 1-1) since 2014. It's also the first time Tarleton has started 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play since 2013, where the Texans won a share of the conference title.
Prior to the game, there was a ceremony on the field officially breaking ground for the renovation of Memorial Stadium. UT Permian Basin football picked up both its first Division II and Lone Star Conference victory Saturday night as the Falcons held off Western New Mexico for a 41-32 win at Altamirano Field in Silver City, N.M.
The Mustangs had a chance to tie the game at 34-34 late in the fourth quarter after a seven yard touchdown with just over six minutes remaining, but missed on a two-point conversion pass that kept the Falcons in the lead...Complete Release
Football Game Previews UT-Permian Basin at Western New Mexico
They almost did it. They almost shocked the LSC-world. But they couldn't quite overcome the Buffs and dropped a 17-6 decision in Canyon. A week after giving up 642 yards to Lamar, the Falcon defense was spectacular, holding WT to 222 yards, piling up 9 tackles for loss and picking off two passes. The offense never found a rhythm, putting together just three drives of more than 40 yards, and throwing two interceptions that led to 10 WT points. They're getting closer and could really surprise someone this year.
Three games into the season, and we still can't figure out Western New Mexico. Take last week's game against Western Oregon. After a scoreless first quarter, WOU outscored the Mustangs 33-7, taking control of the game. Three interceptions on three consecutive drives (including a pick-six) helped the Wolves to great incredible unbelievable field position (average starting point was the WNMU 35 yd line) and they took full advantage. Javia Hall threw 5 picks on the day and now has 7 for the season. On the plus side, he's averaging 386 yards per game, and when he gets on a roll is extremely dangerous.
With the way these teams played last week, you might want to pick UTPB. But it's another road game, and we can't imagine Hall struggling so mightily again. WNMU 28-21.
#3 Texas A&M-Commerce at Texas A&M-Kingsville
The Lions (23) and Javelinas (27) have combined to win 50 LSC titles, far and away leading the conference schools. This was supposed to be a possible title matchup. The Lions have held up their end of the bargain, starting off 3-0 and reaching #3 in the AFCA poll. Luis Perez has rebounded from a rough opening week, and leads the LSC in passing efficiency (166.2), and is averaging 257 yards per game, with 9 TD passes. They appear to be the cream of the LSC at this point in the season.
The Javelinas are going through some growing pains. They dropped a 35-13 decision to Midwestern State, that doesn't look as bad as the score would indicate. They outgained the Mustangs 420-387, holding the MSU running game to 157 yards. There were a couple of areas that really hurt - falling behind 21-0, giving MSU great field position on the second and third TD drives, and the red zone discrepancy. Both teams had four trips into the red zone - MSU scored four TDs, while the Javelinas could muster just 2 FGs and 2 failed 4th down attempts. On the bright side, redshirt freshmen QB Cade Dyal (236 yds, 1 TD, 0 Ints) and RB Marcus Younger (116 yds) appear to have a lot of upside.
The Javelinas absolutely cannot allow the Lions to get off to a quick start. They should play better at home, but it won't be enough. TAMC 42-24
West Texas A&M at Tarleton State
Both teams picked up big LSC wins last week. The Buffs can't feel too great about their win, edging UT-Permian Basin 17-6, scoring a TD with 5:29 to play to get that margin. The offense struggled mightily, gaining just 222 yards. The defense was very good again, giving up just 314 yards, picking off two passes which set up 10 of the 17 points. A win is a win, but this took away some of the momentum WT thought they had after the Colorado Pueblo game.
The Texans have to be feeling much better about their win. First of all it was against a better opponent. Second they were outplayed on both sides of the ball, but took advantage of five turnovers and a blocked punt, adding up to 20 of their 30 points. Finally, after Angelo pulled to within 30-24, Tarleton was able to run out the final 6:58 of the game, with an 11 play, 63 yard drive, converting 3 third downs and killing the clock.
This could be a defensive struggle, with the team holding on the ball best having the edge. Tarleton takes another step forward, 24-17.
Angelo State at Eastern New Mexico
Last weekend saw both squads lose their first game of the 2017 season, which makes this a huge game for LSC title and NCAA playoff aspirations. The Rams literally gave away last week's game with Tarleton, turning the ball over five times, including 2 fumbles returned for TDs, an interception that led to a FG, and an interception inside the Texans 10 yard line. To top it off, the Rams outgained Tarleton 545 yards to 291 (of which 63 came on a game icing drive that consumed the final 6:58 of the game).
The Greyhounds were simply outplayed at Commerce. They traded blows early, trailing just 13-9 early in the second quarter, but the Lions outscored ENMU 28-9 the rest of the half, taking a commanding 41-15 lead into the break. Kamal Cass had his best game of the year, with 118 yards, but it wasn't nearly enough.
Can Angelo contain the ENMU running game? Can ENMU slow down ASU's offense? Can Angelo hang on to the ball? Gonna go with the Rams with a road win, ASU 31-28.

Texas A&M-Commerce and West Texas A&M lead the Lone Star Conference standings at 2-0 to start league play. LSC games continue this week with two games Tuesday, one Wednesday, and five each on Friday and Saturday.
LSC volleyball teams are 55-47 overall this season.The squads are currently 15-16 combined versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, and 6-5 against the Heartland Conference, which are the other leagues in the NCAA South Central Region. Roberts continued her strong senior campaign as the Cedar Park native landed 62 kills in three matches, leading Tarleton to two wins last weekend. Roberts went for a double-double in all three matches for the TexAnns last week and topped the 20-kill plateau against Dallas Baptist and Texas A&M-Commerce. For the week, Roberts hit .279, including a .447 clip at Texas Woman's Friday night, to go along with two assists, five service aces, 42 digs, six blocks, and 70.0 total points.
DEFENSIVE
Shelley Chapron, Texas A&M University-Commerce, SO, Houston, Texas, St. Pius X HS
Chapron led the Lion defense with 23 total blocks in the Lions' three wins last week. She had a career-high 11 blocks against Tarleton State, which ties for the most in the LSC this season. Chapron had at least five blocks in each match as the Lions held opponents to a .165 hitting percentage.She was also a force on offense out of the middle, with 32 kills and a team-best hitting percentage of .328. She had 13 kills in the Lions 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist and 12 kills against No. 5 Angelo State, where she hit .667.

Gabriela Rosa, Texas A&M University-Commerce, SR, Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Guamani Private School
Rosa was spot on for the Lions in their three wins last week. She led the team with 93 assists, including a career-high 33 assists in the Lions 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist. Rosa had at least 29 assists in each of the Lions' wins against top-25 opponents Angelo State and Tarleton State averaging 6.64 assists per set. Rosa was also third on the team with 41 digs and had two aces and two kills. She was instrumental in the offense in both of the Lions' upset wins to begin conference action.

No. 3 Lions pick up 51-22 win over Eastern New Mexico to begin conference season
The No. 3 Texas A&M-Commerce football team remained unbeaten after a 51-22 win over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday. The Lion air attack went for 358 yards and the Lions scored seven touchdowns in the game to give them their first conference win.

No. 13 @MWSUFootball smacks Hoggies, 35-13, to roll to 2-0
The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas had some success on fourth down in Saturday night's game against the Midwestern State Mustangs, scoring a touchdown and picking up a first down that helped set up a field goal.
But the No. 13 Mustangs stopped the Javelinas twice on fourth down inside the 10, driving 95 yards for a final score after one of them to take a 35-13 win in the Lone Star Conference opener for both schools.

Defense leads Texans to win over Rams in LSC opener
Tarleton's defense came to the rescue by forcing five turnovers and returning two fumbles for scores in a 30-24 road win over Angelo State to open up Lone Star Conference play.
Tarleton (2-1, 1-0) had to grind until the very end for its second consecutive victory. The Texans only had 291 yards of offense compared to Angelo State's 545 yards.

An interesting SR4 matchup between teams better than their combined 0-4 might suggest. Both lost to FCS schools in the opening week, and both lost close conference games to teams in the upper echelon of their respective conferences. Neither team runs the ball well (39 ypg for WNMU, 1 ypg game for WOU, yes one yard per game so far), but both can move it through the air (WOU 293 ypg, WNMU 441 ypg). Hopefully, WNMU won't be as generous with field position as they were last week, when ENMU started six of their first seven possessions in WNMU territory (average starting position at WNMU 43 yard line), allowing ENMU to jump ahead 17-7.
This is pretty much a toss-up, but we'll go with the home team, WNMU 30-24.

Texas Permian Basin at West Texas A&M - 3:00 (UTPB Notes) (WTAM Notes)
Given the performances last week, this looks like a shoo-in for the mismatch of the week. The Falcons got blown out by FCS Lamar 72-6, giving up 396 rushing yards and 246 passing. Five different Cardinals had 60+ rushing yards. That's got to have the Buffs excited, as they continue to make the transition to a run first offense. It's been fairly successful so far, averaging 178 yards against two good defenses. The passing game has been a little rough, but should have some success this weekend. Defensively, WT is allowing just 312 yards per game and shut down Colorado State-Pueblo last week after falling behind 21-3 early in the second quarter - 10 possessions, 27 plays, 117 yards, 3 punts, 4 turnovers. UTPB's defense is giving up 239 yards rushing, 296 passing and almost 60 points per game. Word is that last year's starting QBs, Ben Arbuckle for WT and Kameron Mathis for UTPB, have regained their starting positions, at least for this week.
Yeah, it should be a blowout, WT 42-7.

Eastern New Mexico at Texas A&M-Commerce - 6:00 (ENMU Notes)(TAMC Notes)
With both teams undefeated and having knocked off ranked squads, you'd think this was going to be a great matchup. And it very well might be, because the Greyhounds show us every year that they should not be a team to overlook. And yet we do, and are again this year. Why? While they are 2-0 and knocked off #18 Southwest Baptist and Western New Mexico last week, a closer look takes some luster off. First the Bearcats don't appear to be as good as they were last year and ENMU needed a 41 yard FG with 7 seconds in the game to squeak by at home. Second, they barely beat WNMU last week, despite starting 6 of their first 7 possessions in WNMU territory, and they gave up 418 yards through the air. Third, while the running game is averaging 286 yards per game, the per carry average of 4.1 is kind of pedestrian, and All-American Kamal Cass is averaging just 95 ypg, and 3.6 per carry. ENMU will need more from him to compete this week. The defense has been stingy against the run (64 ypg, 2.4 per carry), but generous against the pass (305 yards per game, 6 TDs, 139.4 efficiency rating).
On the flipside, TAMC has won a defensive struggle against #6 North Alabama on the road, and dominated an overmatched William Jewell last week. Luis Perez rebounded after a tough opening game, going 20-29 for 236 yards and 4 TDs in just under three full quarters, and looking like the All-American QB expected by a lot of folks in the preseason. The running game has not had one back break out, but the top three backs are combining for 111 ypg, and 5.2 per carry. The defense is giving up just 6.5 pts per game, and 272 yards, with just 48 per game rushing.
The key matchup is the Lions run defense against the Greyhound ground game. ENMU needs to win this battle decisively to win the game, while TAMC just needs to keep the Greyhounds from running wild. Also, ENMU's pass defense will need to tighten things up against a much more efficient Lion passing game. TAMC takes the first big LSC battle, 35-17.

Tarleton State at Angelo State - 6:00 (TSU Notes) (ASU Notes)
A quick look at the numbers would indicate a comfortable win for Angelo State. They are 2-0, outscoring opponents by a 45-11 margin and outgaining them by 551-275. Tarleton State is 1-1, outscoring teams by 32-27, but getting outgained 367-389.
For the Texans, a couple of caveats. First, the opening opponent, Delta State, looks like they might be a playoff-challenging team this year. Second, Zed Woerner has been announced as the starting QB. He has been much more effective at QB, putting up better stats and moving the team much better than Derek Kiser. Despite playing just the last couple of series at Delta State and splitting time last week, he is 11-17 for 200 yards and 5 TDs and a QB rating of 260.6!!! He has a talented trio of WRs in Jeff Thomas, Del'Michael High and Savon Rollioson and Adam Berryman is establishing himself as a top-flight running back. The defense needs to attack the QB better (1 sack to date) and get more turnovers (3).
The Rams look like a team that could challenge for the LSC title and NCAA playoffs. But before that claim can be made, they need to show what they can do against better competition. Can Jake Faber continue his early performance (68% completion, 280 yards per game, 5-0 TD to Int, 165 QB rating)? Will Lawson Ayo and Donovan Thompson combine for 188 receiving yards per game? Can Josh Stevens pace a running attack averaging 225 yards per game? Can the defense keep teams under 275 yards per game? In all likelihood, no, there will be some drop off. But, they have shown a great deal of improvement from last year's team.
While the numbers favor a comfortable Rams win, they can deceive. We're going to stick with the Rams, but it should be close (and could easily go the other way). ASU 28-24.

Texas A&M-Kingsville at Midwestern State - 7:00 (TAMK Notes)(MSU Notes)
Just about everyone thought this was going be a marquee matchup, one that could decide the LSC title. And it still might, but the opening week loss to Central Washington and fairly lackluster game at Simon Fraser last week has raised some questions about the Javelinas. QB play has been uneven - Conner Smith has started both games, throwing for 127 ypg, completing 61% of his passes, but has 0 TDs and 2 Ints, good for a 98.6 QB rating. Redshirt freshman Cade Dyal may have earned the starting job this week, after coming off the banch and throwing 3 TDs and moving the team more effectively. Jordan Thomas and Stehley Reden give either QB great targets to throw to. Nick Pealrean is quietly emerging as a top LSC running back, averaging 99.5 yards per game and 9.5 per carry, while Oklahoma State transfer Jeff Carr might be ready to make his mark, picking up 73 yards last week in limited action. The defense is about middle of the pack so far, 336.5 yards and 20.5 points per game. Of importance this week, they are giving up 112 on the ground, a number that is most likely to increase after this game.
So how about MSU? They dominated a weak opponent in week one, and then had their second game cancelled due to Hurricane Irma last week. As expected, the run game is solid. It might even be better than solid. They rushed for 468 yards and 6 TDs against Quincy, averaging an amazing 12 yards per carry. Adrian Seales (243 yds, 14.3 per carry) and Vincent Johnson (136 yards, 3 TDs, 19.4 per carry) were unstoppable. Layton Rabb wasn't tested, attempting just 13 passes, so we'll find out more about him this week. The defense was in Quincy's backfield a lot, with 3 sacks and 7 total tackles for loss, holding them to 246 yards and 0 TDs.
It's hard to go against Midwestern State with the way these two have played so far this year. Mustangs 35-21.

Rams Top Northern Michigan 48-20
The Angelo State football team notched its second win of the 2017 season on Saturday evening at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium, defeating Northern Michigan 48-20.
With the win, the Rams move to 2-0 on the season and had 660 yards of total offense on the night. The 660 yards were the most since the Rams racked up 684 yards of offense against Tarleton State in October of 2015.

UTPB Plays first DI Opponent in Road Contest at Lamar
UT Permian Basin football faced off against its first ever Division I opponent Saturday night, traveling to Beaumont, Texas for a non-conference game against Lamar, which the Cardinals won 72-6.
UTPB scored on its second drive of the game, taking possession at its own 47-yard line. A 39-yard pass down the field to Jake Anglin by Caden Coots drove the Falcons to the Lamar 14, and two plays later Brandon Infiesto rushed 10 yards to the Lamar 3.
