Buffs Football Announces 2012 High School Recruiting Class

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel has announced the 2012 high school recruiting class, which includes the signing of 42 student-athletes to play football for the Buffaloes this fall. Nine of the recruits had ties to West Texas or the Texas Panhandle.

“It has been an exciting day for myself and my entire staff here at West Texas A&M,” Carthel said. We have 42 signees as of right now and are looking at possibly signing two or three more players later in the week. The majority of our recruits came from the state of Texas, with one of the players coming over from New Mexico. We are really excited to get these young men on campus and see what they can offer to the Buffalo football program.”

Overall, the Buffs added 24 players on offense, 17 defensive players, and one kicker/punter.

“The bulk of our recruits came on the offensive side of the ball,” Carthel said. We brought in quite a few running backs, but we feel that down the road if some of them cannot materialize into a top-three running back for us, they can still play safety or the linebacker position. We also brought in a few top-rated quarterbacks and hope to get them in here and learn the system so that they can have some success running the offense a few years down the road.

Carthel and his staff targeted four key players on the defensive side of the ball and announced that they were able to sign three of the players. Three of these players happened to be local area products, William Tolliver (Canyon, Texas/High), Phillip Sorrells (Amarillo, Texas/High), and Ra’shondric Sheppard (Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa).

“Overall we felt that we had a really good signing class this year,” Carthel said. “We targeted some players that we felt we needed to add depth to that certain position, and we also signed some players that can come in and make an immediate impact to our football program. All the coaches are really looking forward to getting these athletes on the WTAMU campus and going to work for the upcoming 2012 season.”

The Buffs are coming off an 8-4 season, where they went 7-3 in the Lone Star Conference. WT made it’s seventh-consecutive trip to the postseason, downing Central Missouri in the Lower Kanza Bowl, 26-7. The Buffs had 20 players named to the all-conference team, with eight players earning first team honors, and the defense finished first in almost every defensive category in the LSC.

The Buffs will open-up the 2012 season in Pueblo, Colo., on Thursday, Aug. 30, as WT takes on CSU-Pueblo.

Coach Carthel:  “Preston is a very strong and athletic young man.  During film evaluations our staff saw a very physical football player that will be a great fit for us at tight end. McAllen, Texas (High)
Played for the Bulldogs under head coach Tony Harris... Was an all-State honorable mention selection... Earned first team all-District honors... Also lettered in soccer at MHS.

Coach Carthel:  “Jose had a tremendous career at McAllen HS. Jose has worked out with our all conference kicker,Sergio Castillo, during the summer months. Dumas, Texas (High)

Played for the Demons under head coach Mike Burt... Lettered in football, basketball and baseball while attending Dumas HS.
