LSC Scoop Afternoon Update

Ex-Bears RB Bailey battling pancreatic cancer
April 30, 2010 8:26 AM
By Brad Biggs

Former Bears running back Johnny Bailey, a ninth-round draft pick in 1990, is ailing from pancreatic cancer, a source told the National Football Post.

The Bears drafted Bailey, 43, after a decorated career at Texas A&I (now known as Texas A&M-Kingsville) and he played for them for two seasons, making one start and rushing for 129 yards and one touchdown. He was primarily used as a return man and went on to make the Pro Bowl the next season with the Phoenix Cardinals, averaging 13.2 yards per return.

Bailey holds the Bears' record for the longest punt return in franchise history. He ran back a punt 95 yards for a touchown as a rookie on Dec. 29, 1990 vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bailey spent two seasons in Phoenix and then finished his career by spending one year with the Los Angeles Rams and another with them after the move to St. Louis.

Bailey is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and was a three-time winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding Division II player. He is also in the school's Hall of Fame along with Bears right guard Roberto Garza. Bailey was college football's all-purpose yardage leader (7,803) when his career ended and he was No. 3 on the all-time scoring list with 428 points.

Northeastern State - 2010 Recruiting Class

Need Help:
QB - Last year's starters (Kenny Davis and Woody Wilson) should be back, but Northeastern State averaged just 154 yards per game passing, and was 11th in passing efficiency in the LSC with a 101.3 rating.

Need Depth:
RB - La'Ron Elmer, Prince McKinney, Chris Davis and Josh Lewis return (combined 889 yards, 6 TDs rushing) but all will be seniors.

LB - Terrance Gaston (2nd LSC North) was a senior last season, but Donald Dangerfield (2nd LSC North) and Jon Evans (HM LSC North) combined for 172 tackles with 20.5 for losses. Both will be seniors.

DB - Nick Dobler (2nd LSC North), Troy Adams, Shantel Mackey, MArquin Watts and Ryan Keenom combined for 9 interceptions, 23 passes broken up, and 194 tackles. Dobler, Adams and Mackey will be seniors.

Good Quality/Depth:
WR - Trey McVay (29-343 6 TD) and Ben Randle (19-263 4 TD) were both 2nd Team LSC North last year, while TE Logan Cawyer was an honorable mention selection. Also returning are Edward Victorian, Sean Donohu and Anthony Moody who were a combined 44-602 and 2 TDs. McVay and Donohue are the only non-seniors in this group.

OL - Five players who started at least four games return, led by Michael Yoder, a 2nd team LSC North honoree. Colton Ables (HM LSC North), Nigel Bolden, Ben Beam, and Stephen Anderson are also slated to return, with only Bolden the only senior.

DL - T. J. Raymond (1st LSC North) is gone, but Billy Blackard and LeQuantum McDonald were both 2nd team selections and combined for 57 tackles, 16.5 for losses and 8 sacks. Caom Hansen, Travis Boswell, Ed Coleman, and Phillip Boyd also should return.

The Riverhawks could get immediate defensive help from OU transfer Gus Jones either at LB or DE (ESPN rated him as the #11 ILB in the nation) . Also look for LB Chris Meyers and DB Travon Brooks and WRs Kendall McKellum and Gionni Harris on offense. Punter Cody Lenz and kicker Drew Patton also need to step in to replace all conference players. The top high school recruit is Steven Hopper - ESPN Recruiting Insider had him as the #88 RB prospect in the nation. Other players to keep an eye on are OL Isikeli Cocker (2nd team All-State 5A), DE James Renfrow, and Athlete Daryn Alves.

LSC Ranking - 6

Overall Grade- B+
LB and WR (and maybe RB) seem to have gotten some immediate upgrades, while most other spots got some good youngsters for the future. NSU appears to have taken another step forward on the way back to respecability.

The West Texas A&M softball team lost 43 games in 2006.

That program, in its fifth year since reforming, could finish the regular season with 42 wins and become Lone Star Conference South Division champions.

Kevin Blaskowski took over the team in the fall of 2005 and began to construct a contender. He didn't expect to achieve success overnight, but he had a plan and stuck with it through winning and losing. Now, with a three-game series against Abilene Christian beginning at 1 p.m. today at Lady Buff Yard, the Lady Buffs are two wins from their first regular-season Lone Star Conference South title.

"When I got hired to bring the program back, we had a five-year plan to be competitive at the conference and national level," Blaskowski said. "We are in our fifth year, and here we are. We would have liked to get here a bit quicker. We are getting good, solid hitting, the pitching staff is much improved, and we are playing good defense. Every aspect of the game has helped us get to where we are. It's just kind of easy when you play the game as well as we are playing it right now."

DeVega gets shot at being a Cowboy
A new page is being written in the annals of Plano Wildcat football.

There have been players come through the system to go on and play at about every prestigious college in the nation and pick up All-America honors and national championships on the way to the NFL draft – one selected as high as fifth – and all-pro NFL careers. There have been West Point cadets and an Air Force Academy class president.

But never has a Plano Wildcat had an opportunity to play for the Dallas Cowboys. That could all be changing.

Dan DeVega, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound lineman, will have a chance to win a job with his favorite team – other than the Wildcats, of course.

He has been invited to a Cowboys tryout camp. They need a deep snapper and DeVega will have three days to show the organization he’s the one they want. He will report Thursday.

East Central - 2010 Recruiting Class

Need Help:
QB - Marcus Johnson has moved on, though Josh Phillips got the most playing time in 2009. Phillips completed just 120 of 245 passes for 1,273 yards and 11 TDs but also 11 Ints. No other experienced players.

RB - No seniors last year, but ECU rushed for just 630 yards and 6 TDs all season. Josh Maldonado is the top returnee, rushing for 408 yards and 3 TDs last fall.

OL - The Tigers' top lineman, Justin Nail (1st LSC North) was a senior. Jon Ramos (2nd LSC North), Chad Roark (HM LSC North) and Craig Roark lead the returnees, but ECU was 12th in the LSC in rushing (57.3 yards per game, 1.8 yds per carry), and gave up 29 sacks.

DL - Xerxes Griffin is the biggest departure from the defensive line. Returning are Darnell Barnes (HM LSC North) and Travis Buchanan, who combined for 81 tackles with 16.5 for losses. As a team, ECU had just 10 sacks in 2009, and allowed 167.6 yards rushing per game, 4.5 yds per carry.

Need Depth:
WR - Zack Patteson (1st LSC North), Jonathan Joe, Joe Joe Euwins, and LaQuan Harper lead the returnees. The quartet combined for 77 receptions, 1,063 yards and 9 TDs. Jonathan Joe is the only senior.

DB - Alex Woodley (1st LSC North) and Charles Burkes (2nd LSC North) are the top returnees. They are joined by Norris Wren (68 tackles) and Joseph Udoh (49 tackles), plus several more who received valuable experience last year. ECU was 3rd in passing yards allowed (219.5 per game) but last in pass defense effiency, primarily due to opposing teams success in running the ball.

Good Quality/Depth:
LB - J.P. Oliver (101 tackles), Airius Ervin (62 tackles) and Tyler McGrew (56 tackles) were all HM LSC North selections. They are joined by Amos Cherry (53 tackles), Michael Ogunleye (41 tackles) and several others who racked up double digit tackles.

Tyler Vanderzee looks to have the edge for the starting QB position in the fall. He threw for almost 1,200 yards in limited action at Mt. San Antonio CC (behind QBs who are now at Tennessee and Fresno State). He could be joined in the backfield by Shomari Grant and Albert Richard. Up front, former Nebraska Cornhusker Rodney Picou and former South Florida signee Carlos Savala should help the OL right away. For the defense, Lonnell Rice (a former Kansas State signee) was the #9 rated Junior College defensive end. Dontea Smith was a two time COA All American at Reedley College and should step right into the secondary. Down the road, look for help from RBs Richard Peoples and Miles Jackson, NT Tyler Shaw, LB Jameel Whitney and DBs Carlos Nazario, Reuben Tiller, Markell Walker and Brenden Brown. But the top two HS recruits might be LB Ken Berry Jr. and DB Deon Criss.

LSC Ranking - 7

Overall Grade- B+
Looking for a positive coming off of a winless 2009, there is plenty of opportunity for the staff to bring in recruits that could have an immediate impact for the Tigers. It appears they did just that at almost every postion.

Ex-ACU lineman still waiting for call from pros
Tony Washington watched the NFL draft for three days, waiting for his name to be called.

It never happened.

The two-time NCAA Division II All-American at Abilene Christian offensive tackle at least expected the phone to ring soon after the draft, with an NFL team ready to offer him a free-agent deal. As of Tuesday, that call had yet to come.

Washington was diplomatic about the lack of interest. Well, at least at first.

"I understand, though," he said. "Some things people can't let go, you know?"

Those things that people can't let go involve his past. In May 2003, when he was 16, Washington was convicted of having sex with his 15-year-old biological sister. He said the sex was consensual. Washington, who grew up in New Orleans, didn't serve any jail time but he received five years probation.

He has to register as a sex offender wherever he lives for the rest of his life.

Washington believes that decision as a 16-year-old is the only reason NFL teams shied away from him

"Yeah, I do believe that's what it's all about," he said. "But I can't do anything about it. I'm just sitting around waiting on a phone call."

It seems hard to believe the 6-foot-7, 305-pound Washington still is waiting for that phone to ring. He did well enough at the NFL combine that some folks were talking about him being a second-round pick. Now, nothing.

Abilene Christian - 2010 Recruiting Class

Need Help:

Need Depth:
OL - All American Tony Washington and Levi Wolfe (HM LSC South) were seniors last year. Three starters return - Royland Tubbs (1st LSC South), Matt Webber (2nd LSC South) and Trevis Turner (HM LSC South). Of the top six returnees with the most experience, four will be seniors.

DB - Tony Harp (1st LSC South) will be hard to replace - he had 245 career tackles and 9 interceptions. Major Culbert (HM LSC South) and DuMaurier Jordan were also seniors in 2009. Experienced returnees include Drew Cuffee (HM LSC South), Richard Havins, Demetric Lee, Nathan Baggs and James Williams.

Good Quality/Depth:
QB - Three returing players with playing time in 2009. Zach Stewart started the first 5 games and is just a junior. Mitchell Gale started the final 8 games and will be just a sophomore in the fall - he threw for 1,709 yards and 10 TDs.

RB - Even though Justin Johnson did not have the impact ACU was hoping for, the Wildcats are more than okay at RB. Reggie Brown and Darryl Richardson (both 2nd team LSC South) combined for over 1,900 yards rushing and another 300 receiving, with a total of 25 TDs. Brown will be senior, while Richardson will be a junior.

WR - Dennis Campbell (30-355 0 TDs) and Trey Simeone (2nd LSC South) have moved on. Edmund Gates (1st LSC South) and Kendrick Johnson (1st LSC South return specialist) lead the returnees. Several talented redshirts from last fall may be ready to make an impact.

DL - Perhaps the strongest position on the team. Starters Aston Whiteside (1st LSC South, 9.5 sacks), Marvin Jones (1st LSC South), Nick Jones and Bryson Lewis all return, as do main reserves Ryan Smith and Mike Jones. ACU led the LSC in rushing defense - 55.5 yards per game, and just 2.0 yards per carry. Four of the top six will be seniors this fall.

LB - if DL isn't the stronges position, then LB is. Reggie Mathis was a senior last year, but everyone else is back. Kevin Washington and Courtney Lane were both 1st team LSC South, while Fred Thompson was a 2nd team selection. Eric Edwards, another starter, and reserves Arthur Johnson, Casey Carr and Derek Odeusi are also slated to be back. These top seven combined for 323 tackles, 60.5 for losses and 25 sacks (ACU led the LSC with 43).

Josh Morgan could force his way into a talented backfield, and Dyland Blount should help fortify the offensive line. Down the road look for Tee Bracy, Ashton Williams, Zack Agnew and Logan Hoppenrath for the offense, and T. R. Varnado, Brandon Dornak, Brandon Bowles, Angel Lopez and Sheldon Catley on the defense.

LSC Ranking - 8

Overall Grade- B+

Similar to UCO in that this is a good group, but small....for now. It is very possible that ACU will add some highly rated recruits before fall camp. As it stands now, not a great deal of immediate help, but some interesting prospects for the future. That should be okay, though, because ACU returns a veteran team with few immediate needs.

Diamond Players of the Week
HITTER
KC Pfister, Southeastern Oklahoma, Jr., Infielder, Plano, Texas/Plano HS

Pfister posted a monster weekend in a 4-0 sweep of rival East Central. Pfister posted a .857 batting average, going 12-for-14 at the plate, while boasting an .800 on base percentage and a 1.857 slugging percentage. He finished the series with five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI, in addition to scoring 12 runs. He also drew four walks and did not strike out. Chris Casazza, Tarleton State, Jr., Outfield/First Base, Temecula, Calif./Chaparral
Casazza tallied a pair of home runs on the weekend, helping the Texans take three of four from the Wildcats at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene and lock in the No. 6 seed into this weekend’s LSC Championships. His two run shot in the second inning of game one helped give the Texans a 4-3 win over ACU. He hit his second homer of the series in the third game of the series, a three-run shot in the first inning to put the Texans up early 3-0. Tarleton closed out the game with a 6-3 win, taking the first series from ACU in Abilene, since 2003.

Midwestern State football signee Matthew McKenzie died in a single-car accident early Monday morning near San Antonio.

“It’s a real tragedy for the family and right at the height of his senior year,” MSU head coach Bill Maskill said. “It’s unfortunate that something like this could happen. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”

Bexar County sheriff’s officials said McKenzie, 18, lost control of his red Toyota Camry and the car became lodged nose-down between trees and large rocks in a drainage culvert.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, McKenzie was wearing his seat belt, and officials said they don’t suspect alcohol played a role in the accident.

David Malesky, head football coach at O’Connor High School in Helotes, Texas, told the Express-News that McKenzie was a model athlete.

“He was an example of what all of our athletes should be,” Malesky said. “He was a great student; he made really good grades, and not many kids could match his work ethic.”

McKenzie was a unanimous District 28-5A first-team pick at O’Connor High. The 6-2, 225-pound defensive lineman signed a national letter of intent to play at Midwestern State in February.

“He was a great student from a really good family,” Maskill said. “He had great character and would have been a real asset to our football team.”

A memorial fund has been set up for Matthew McKenzie at the Firstmark Credit Union to cover the cost of his funeral.

Southeastern Oklahoma - 2010 Recruiting Class

Need Help:
WR - This was the hardest hit spot on the roster. Daniel Nichols (1st LSC North) leaves SOSU with 192 receptions and more than the 3,000 yards and 32 TDs. Jerrod Temple (2nd LSC North), Ty Hull (2nd LSC North), Jay Rose, Michael Goodlow, and Jerome Hewitt (1st LSC North as a return specialist) are also moving on. That group combined for 202 receptions for 2,747 yards and 27 TDs. The top returning receiver is Dee Williams, who had just 10 receptions in 2009.

Need Depth:
QB - A bit of a mystery here. We have heard reports that Justin Pitrucha will not be back for his senior season, but that has not been confirmed. Regardless, Logan Turner is expected to take the reins in the fall. Dallas McCutcheon provides an experienced backup, but will be a senior. Last year's top QB recruit, Reid Golson, has transferred.

OL - Starters Jerrod Anderson (1st LSC North) and Bryce Perkins are gone. Sean Taglialatela (2nd LSC North), Ryan Sullivan and Robert Westbrook are returning starters.

LB - The Savage Storm will miss Noe Lopez, the leading tackler last year, and a 2nd team LSC North choice. But starter Johnny Seals (2nd LSC North) returns, as do Brad Chesshir, Russell Hurst and Colby Gibson.

DB - Bernard Daniel (1st LSC North) and Cedric Robinson were seniors last year. The cupboard is not bare though, with Steven Harris (2nd LSC North), Welton Johnson, Matthew Leatherwood, Brandon Harrison, A.J. Garcia, and Jeremy Law all returning.

Good Quality/Depth:
RB - Baylen Laury and Josh Johnson were both 2nd team LSC North players, and combined for more than 1,200 yards and 12 TDs rushing. Laury was also the second leading receiver, catching 41 passes for 355 yards and 3 more TDs.

DL - Cody Walters and De'arteuy Jones graduated, but three starters return. Alex Moore was a 1st team LSC North selection, while Dexter Elliott and Lionel Gillespie were both 2nd teamers. Romelle Terry and Rodney Payne are also experienced returnees.

SOSU addressed their future QB needs with Xavier Smith, a good sized prospect out of North Mesquite. Cedrico Pollard and Derrell Newton should be ready to contribute when Laury and Johnson have moved on. The holes at WR were addressed with transfers Sam Roberson, DeQualin Evans, Michael Hill and Quentin Morris. Two TEs were also brought in, Donel Morrison and Kevin Brown (rated the #103 TE prospect by ESPN). Prospects Adrian Adams, Gerson Reyes, Josh Burkham, Preston Smith and Sean Clayton should bolster the offensive line down the road. Not as much projected help on the other side of the ball. Simeon Stevenson is the top defensive line recruit, while the secondary should get immediate help from Scotty Bryant and Emanual Jackson, and future help from Will Cowan.

LSC Ranking - 9

Overall Grade- B
The Savage Storm did a good job on the offensive side of the ball addressing their immediate needs at receiver and tight end, and their future needs everywhere else. The defense does not appear to have gotten the same attention, unless some players move around.

Mooney returned from her 18-game injury absence and didn’t miss a beat as the sophomore third baseman hit .455 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs to help the Mustangs clinch their first outright LSC North Division title since 2007 with a sweep of Northeastern State. Mooney belted a three-run homer in Game 1 Tuesday in Tahlequah, then blasted a two-run home run in Game 2. The Mesquite native added a pair of sacrifice flies in MSU’s sweep Saturday at Mustangs Park. Mooney raised her season batting average to .359 to go along with seven doubles, seven homers and 35 RBIs.

NORTH PITCHER
Amanda Tanner, Southeastern Oklahoma, Sr., Pitcher, Wagoner, Okla./Wagoner HS
Tanner helped lead Southeastern to a 3-1 week against Southwestern Oklahoma State in a matchup that was key to keeping SE in contention for the LSC Championship. Tanner tossed a pair of complete games, winning both, including pitching SE’s first shutout of the season. She posted a 0.50 ERA, allowing just one run over 14.0 innings. She surrendered just two walks, while striking out seven and holding opponents to a .259 batting average.

SOUTH HITTER
Nicole Smith, Angelo State, Sr., Third Base, Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena HS
Smith hit .625 with five runs scored as the Rambelles swept Texas A&M-Kingsville over the weekend. She was 5-for-8 from the plate with a double and four walks while collecting four stolen bases in the three wins. She picked up at least one hit and scored at least one run in all three games and scored three runs in Sunday’s 7-2 win over the Javelinas.

SOUTH PITCHER
Chelsea Nelson, Angelo State, Sr., Pitcher, Highland Village, Texas/Marcus HS
Nelson picked up a pair of wins an a save as the she led the Rambelles to a three-game weekend sweep at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Nelson earned a win and a save in Saturday’s doubleheader as ASU shut out the Javelinas twice, 4-0 and 3-0. She added a second win in relief Sunday in a 7-2 victory. She boasted an 0.54 earned run average and collected 11 strikeouts in 13.0 innings of work. In Saturday’s first game, she tossed her LSC-leading fifth shutout of the season.

Top TimesSpring game showcases new A&M-Commerce football squad
A sunshine-splashed Memorial Stadium provided ideal weather for the end of spring practice for the A&M-Commerce football team. With the team divided into two squads – blue (offense) and white (defense) – the Lions wrapped up their spring practice with a 58-play intra-squad scrimmage.

An aggressive defense forced five turnovers and allowed just one touchdown.
A&M-Commerce utilized three quarterbacks - Adam Farkes, Brandon Colquitt and Cal Farley – throughout the scrimmage. The quarterbacks found 10 different receivers during the afternoon, as the offense and the ground game saw carries split among three runners.

One of the ball carriers was Marcus Graham, who scored the lone touchdown on the afternoon. Among those causing havoc on the defensive side of the ball were junior Tramaine Williams and freshman Daniel Jacobs, who were both redshirted during the 2009 season. Williams nearly scored a defensive touchdown early in the scrimmage, picking up a fumble and returning it to the three-yard line. Jacobs was involved in multiple stops throughout the scrimmage.

A&M-Commerce, which won the last five games of the 2009 season on the way to the Lone Star Conference North title, opens the season at home on Sept. 4 against Upper Iowa at 6 p.m. Five of the Lions’ 11 scheduled games will take place in Commerce. The Lions will play in the Harvey Martin Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Sept. 11 against Angelo State.

Greyhounds hit the gridiron for annual spring game
When the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico hit the gridiron on Saturday for their annual Green - Silver Spring showdown, there may have been a few questions about the team that needed answering. With expectations of the NCAA Division II's best passing offense from a year ago looming, some wonder if the Hounds will be able to match 2009's record-setting statistics. If the weekend's intra-squad scrimmage is any indicator, all systems are ready for launch.

After shaking off some pre-game nerves, sophomore quarterback Wesley Wood threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns in his 2010 debut. The young quarterback seems poised to take the reins of an offense that led all of college football in passing yards per game in 2009, averaging 448.

"I feel great about Wes," head coach Mark Ribaudo said. "He's extremely coachable, he's a leader; he's everything you want in a quarterback."

Stephens to play to seasons at Tarleton State
Nick Stephens found a new home.

The former Tennessee quarterback apparently also will get to stay there longer than expected.

Stephens told ESPN.com on Monday that he would be transferring to Division-II school Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas, a 100-mile drive from his home in Flower Mound. And according to the would-be fifth-year senior for the Vols, a review of his transcripts has given Stephens an extra season of eligibility — giving him a chance for two with his new program.

“If anything I’m even more sure of my decision now,” Stephens told ESPN.com. “A lot of things were happening around me. I had an unsettling feeling and I didn’t want to have that feeling.

“There were some things that happened at practice that I don’t really want to get into. But I needed to find somewhere else to play.”

Tennessee QB transferring to Tarleton

Tarleton State added a big name to its 2010 recruiting class Monday when quarterback Nick Stephens announced his intent of joining the Texans as a transfer from Tennessee.

Tarleton head coach Cary Fowler was unable to confirm Stephens' commitment until official paperwork is received, but the quarterback was open about his plans Monday evening.

"I'm excited about going to Tarleton," Stephens said. "I can't wait to finish the semester (at Tennessee) and get to Stephenville so I can get to work."

Stephens started six games for Tennessee in 2008 and backed up Jonathan Crompton in 2009. He was working with the first team offense early in spring ball recently, but saw his reps dwindle as junior college transfer Matt Simms, the son of New York Giants legend Phil Simms, became more comfortable in the offense.

Stephens announced earlier this month he intended to leave Tennessee in search of an FCS or Division II school where he would be guaranteed playing time next season.

Tarleton seemed like a natural fit for the 6-4, 231-pound trigger puller, who had announced he planned to find a school within two hours of his home in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. He also visited Texas A&M-Commerce.

"It was the comfort factor," Stephens said when asked why he chose Tarleton. "It's a feeling I can't really describe. It's just the way you feel when you know where you really want to be. I felt comfortable with the coaches and with all the players I met while I was there. They have a great group of guys."

Stephens says he visited Tarleton April 16-17 and was in attendance at the Texans' spring game.

"That was great," Stephens said of the spring game. "The weather kept them from doing everything they normally would, but it's obvious they have a lot of talent to work with. I can't wait."

Stephens passed for more than 2,600 yards and 24 touchdowns at Flower Mound in 2005, numbers that helped him earn four-star status and the No. 11 ranking among 2006 pro-style quarterback recruits, according to Scout.com. He earned three stars and the No. 15 ranking from Rivals. In addition to Tennessee, he was also recruited by Mississippi, Michigan, Colorado, Illinois and Oklahoma State.

The recruiting marks are especially impressive considering the crop of signal callers in that class. Among them were Matthew Stafford, who was last year's No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, and Heisman Trophy winners Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow, who were the No. 1 and No. 25 picks in the first round of the 2010 draft last weekend. Former Stephenville star Jevan Snead, who won two Cotton Bowls as the starter at Mississippi before agreeing to a free agency deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday, was also in that class.

Stephens passed for 840 yards and three touchdowns for the Volunteers in 2008, earning an efficiency rating of 108.28 despite completing only 48.5 percent of his passes and tossing four interceptions. His best game came at Georgia when he passed for 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

In limited time last fall, Stephens was 9-13 for 142 yards, a TD and an interception.

Tennessee lost head coach Lane Kiffin to Southern California in the off-season, and new Volunteers coach Derek Dooley was sorry to see Stephens go.

"Nick's in his fifth year and of course been trying to get on the field his whole career," Dooley said, according to a report published by cbssportsline.com on the Web. "(He) just felt like it was too risky to go through another season because he just wants to play. We hate to lose Nick, but I certainly understand."

Stephens hopes his experience at Tennessee helps him to succeed at Tarleton.

"Any experience helps, and even last year when I came in at the end of games I got to play on a big stage and I think that will help," he said. "The main thing is I just want to play football. I don't care if it's in front of 90,000 people or 1,000 people. It's just exciting knowing I'll get to play with a good football team."

At Tarleton, Stephens shouldn't have to worry about a quarterback controversy. Redshirt freshman Aaron Doyle appeared to be the leading candidate for the starting job at the conclusion of spring drills, but he hasn't taken a snap in a college game. The other Texan quarterbacks include junior Casey Page, sophomore Jake Fenske and redshirt freshman Jackson Crawley.

Scott Grantham was the starter at Tarleton for three seasons and led the Texans to a share of the Lone Star Conference championship last fall. He announced shortly after the end of the season that he would not return as a senior.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Nick Stephens said Monday he's transferring to Division II Tarleton State, in Texas.

Stephens said a review of his transcripts revealed he'll have two years to play. He left Tennessee this spring after falling behind Matt Simms.

"If anything I'm even more sure of my decision now," Stephens said. "A lot of things were happening around me. I had an unsettling feeling and I didn't want to have that feeling. There were some things that happened at practice that I don't really want to get into. But I needed to find somewhere else to play."

Stephens said he hopes to graduate in December and pursue a master's degree.
"I'll watch the Tennessee games when I can," Stephens said. "I still have a lot of good friends on the team that I'll continue to support."

Stephens played in three games for Tennessee last season and started six games in 2008, finishing with a career total of five touchdowns and four interceptions.

Central Oklahoma - 2010 Recruiting Class

Need Help:
QB - Brandon Noohi threw for more than 4,700 yards with 32 TDs the past two seasons and received first team All-LSC North honors in 2009, and second team in 2008. Ethan Sharp attempted just 4 passes last season.

RB - Another spot with no experience. Jason Palmer and Ben Birmingham combined for 1,203 yards and 9 TDs rushing, with Palmer picking up a spot on the first team LSC-North.

DL - Jermell Cudjo and Freddie Harris will be a hard act to follow. Sam Moses received honorable mention LSC North honors, and Quinton Price started 8 games, but it will be hard to replace Harris and Cudjo, who combined for 114 tackles, with 25 for losses and 12 sacks. The top 7 returning players totalled 97 tackles, 11.5 for losses and 5.5 sacks. The good news is that the seven are a young group - just one senior, three juniors and three sophomores for next fall.

LB - First team All-LSC North selection Tucker Cason is back, but it will be difficult to replace Terrance Hill and Terry Hardeman and their combined 169 tackles with 17.5 for losses.

Need Depth:
WR - The Bronchos lose another first team All-LSC North player in Ryan Gallimore, but do return some talented youngsters with experience. Daniel Morrell was a second team All-LSC North pick, and he combined with Dolphin Davis, Matt Jackson and Tucker Holland to catch 100 passes for 1,150 yards and 7 TDs.

OL - Luke Sapolu was a first team All-LSC North selection, and he combined with Andrew McCabe and Jeremy Palmoore to start 24 games last year. Cody Hughes (2nd All-LSC North) leads the returning linemen. Corbin Burchett, Cody Ellett, Jake Kessen and Hughes combined to start 25 games, but Kessen and Ellett will be seniors.

DB - Gone are starters Maurice Henry, Prentice Muse and Caleb Prince (with 8 Ints between them), but back are All American Giorgio Durham (8 Ints as a sophomore in 2009), Joey Fallon, Cordarrow Milton, and Anthony Anderson.

The Bronchos dipped into Texas for several of their offensive recruits. QB Brett Maxie, RB Dante Lipscomb and WR Terrance Davis were terrific pickups for UCO. They will join RB Kwame Tate and WR's Cole Eddy, Derek Serowski and Blake Gatewood from Oklahoma. Garrett Sullivan was a top rated offensive line prospect last year. Not as many signees on the defensive side, but DL Terry Williamson, LB Jon Bullock, LB Aaron James and DB Steven Daniels should be helping UCO before long.

The wildcard in the group of newcomers is Artrell Woods. Woods (ESPN profile) was a top 50 WR recruit out of HS. He was at Oklahoma State before a freak accident nearly left him paralyzed in 2007. He returned to the field in 2008 for his sophomore season, but did not have the same explosiveness and speed.

LSC Ranking - 10

Overall Grade- B
A nice class, but small, with just 18 announced signings. Appear to have done very well on offense, but not a great deal of help for the defense. This class could be an A if Woods is able to get back close to his pre-injury form.

Snead, Lindholm quick to land free agency deals

By BRAD KEITH

They may not have been selected during the NFL Draft, but in a flurry of post-draft free agent activity, former Stephenville High School quarterback Jevan Snead and Tarleton State kicker Garrett Lindholm were quick to be picked up Saturday.

Snead is joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Lindholm came to terms with the Atlanta Falcons. Both agreed to two-year deals.

Lindholm's deal came especially swift. He says he had a deal in place with the Falcons less than 90 seconds after the draft was complete.

"I talked to Indianapolis, but I had to decide which deal was better for me and where I was most likely to make the team," Lindholm said Saturday evening.

Snead got his deal done quickly, too, as news of his becoming a Buccaneer began to spread an hour after the last pick was made.

Tampa Bay was 3-13 last season, finishing last in the NFC South.

The Bucs appear to be set on Josh Freeman as their starter at quarterback. He started the final nine games as a rookie last season after starring at Kansas State.

Tampa Bay also has quarterbacks Josh Johnson and Rudy Carpenter listed on the roster on the team's Web site. Johnson, a Division I FCS standout at San Diego, made four starts in his second season last year. Carpenter spent much of his rookie campaign on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad before joining the Bucs in week 12. He has not taken a snap in an NFL game.

Lindholm joins two other kickers in Atlanta, according to the team's roster online. Matt Bryant has hit 82.1 percent of his field goal attempts in his career including a long of 62 yards. Steve Hauschka is 10-15 in his career.

Last week the Falcons, who are also in the NFC South and went 9-7 last year, re-signed punter Michael Koenen, who also handled kickoff duties last season.

Both Snead and Lindholm are expected to begin working with their new teams in May. NFL training camps officially begin in mid July.

ECU defense looks good

Ada — ADA — East Central University defensive coordinator Justin Deason was probably the happiest guy on campus after Saturday’s Orange and White Game at Norris Field.

Besides coaching the White to a 10-0 victory while head coach Tim McCarty played the role of neutral observer, Deason watched his defense dominate the shorthanded ECU offense all afternoon and put an exclamation point on a spring that everybody associated with Tiger football has dubbed an unqualified success.

“We’ve talked about being physical all spring,” Deason said. “That’s something we need to get back to at East Central — hitting people and playing with confidence.

“I was pleased with the hitting out there today,” he added. “We minimized our mistakes, and we were very competitive. I was excited with the competition out there.”

Silver squad posts victory at Green and Silver Game
BLACKWATER DRAW — With the NFL draft winding down and April waning, football fans got just a little tease of what fall may hold Saturday with the annual Green and Silver game putting an exclamation point on Eastern New Mexico University’s spring camp.

ENMU coach Mark Ribaudo said the purpose of the game, which pitted the first team offense and the second team defense (Green) against the first team defense and second team offense (Silver), was to give players a good simulation of a real game situation and at the same time get a competitive game. Ribaudo got a competitive game all right as Silver blocked a field goal with six seconds left to record a 34-32 victory in front of a crowd of around 100.

“We wanted to make it a good game, which it was,” Ribaudo said. “When you have a crowd and parents out there it’s great. We wanted to see if these young quarterbacks would respond and they did great.”

Ribaudo said he’s got a lot of faith in his soon-to-be sophomore quarterback duo of Green-teamer Wesley Wood of Muleshoe and Eric Flores of Las Cruces, who led the Silver team to the win. The coach said what he saw Saturday just reinforced his comfort level with his young guns.

Wood hit 31 of 53 passes for 275 yards and two touchdown passes, and also scrambled for a 5-yard touchdown in the second quarter. More important for Ribaudo, he made good decisions and didn’t throw a pick all afternoon.

“He showed he can hold up against the pressure and make good decisions,” Ribaudo said.

In what could prove to be his coming out party, Wood said the butterflies were there as he grasped the need to take charge of the Greyhound offense.

“I was nervous, I ain’t gonna lie to you,” Wood said. “Once I got in the game it was all right, though

TAHLEQUAH — Kenny Evans watched four of his ball carriers combine for 247 yards rushing, but he also saw his quarterbacks throw four interceptions.

That’s why the Northeastern State football coach gave his team a grade of B-minus after the Green-White game ended in 8-8 to tie to wrap up the RiverHawks’ spring workouts at Doc Wadley Stadium/Gable Field on Saturday.

“We’re still a young team next year,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

The RiverHawks, though, won’t have as much work to do on the running game — if the spring game is any indication.

LaRon Elmer, a 5-foot-7, 185-pound senior from Mesquite, Texas, led the rushing with 98 yards on 16 carries in playing for Green. Josh Lewis (5-9, 185) of Arlington, Texas, added 57 yards rushing on nine carries and scored the Green’s lone touchdown on a 17-yard run with 6:04 left in the third quarter.

“Our running game is very good,” Evans said. “Two things that will help us next fall is our offensive line is returning intact and a lot of those are the same guys who started two years ago and last year. We ran the ball more than we thought.”

Evans hoped his team would pass better, but two of the White quarterbacks — Cale Fulps of Broken Arrow and Pat Cook of Mont Belvieu, Texas — were intercepted four times. Fulps had three of them.

“You don’t want to see interceptions in this type of game,” said Evans, a Warner native who is going into his third season at the RiverHawks’ helm. “We didn’t have all of our starters out there at the same time. We may have the starting quarterback out there, but the guards and tackles are backup players.

“I wished we hadn’t thrown the ball away because turnovers are the biggest way to lose a game. All of our quarterbacks (including Kenny Davis and Keys’ Ryan Nolan) had moments, but we weren’t able to sustain drives. I would like to hope we’ll be able to do that in the fall.”

Guinn confident he will soon find home in pro ranks

By BRAD KEITH
Sports Editor
brad.keith@empiretribune.com

Devin Guinn accomplished a lot during his four years of football at Tarleton State.

But nothing he did on the field for the Texans helped his status as a pro prospect as much as his performance in one single workout.

At a pro day at Abilene Christian University, Guinn amazed those in attendance by running a 4.4 in the 40...against the wind. With the wind (which was registering between 5-8 miles per hour, Guinn says), he was told his time was 4.38.

He ran an especially impressive 20-yard shuttle (five yards one way, 10 yards the other, then five yards back to the original starting line) time of 4.03 seconds, which would have tied for the second fastest time at the NFLCombine. The fastest was 4.00 by cornerback A.J. Jefferson of Fresno State.

“It was a great workout,” Guinn said. “I’ve never been a great (broad) jumper or bench presser, but I did okay for my size and I was real strong in the other events. I felt good about it.”

Guinn knows being drafted is a long shot, but still believes there is a home for him in professional football.

“I understand where I stand,” says Guinn, who owns Tarleton’s single-season and career marks for touchdown receptions. “I know I’m going to be a football player, if not in the NFL, then in the CFL (Canadian Football League).”

One thing Guinn is not short of is belief in himself.

“I have a lot of people supporting me and I believe in myself that I won’t let them down,” he said.
“I’ve seen the type of players that make it as professionals and I believe I can be that type of player.”

Above all, he just loves the game and wants to continue to compete.

“I love football, I really do,” he said. “I’m not ready to stop being a football player. I’m working hard, doing everything I can to continue my career at the next level.”

Southwestern Oklahoma - 2010 Recruiting Class

Need Help:
QB - Steve Day, despite a subpar senior season, leaves as the all-time Bulldog leader in passing yards and TDs. Day's backup, Houston Johnson, threw five passes last year. No proven experience at the position.

RB - SWO averaged 42.9 yards per game rushing, and just 1.6 per carry. The top backs all return, but the team needs to drastically improve the run game.

WR - Not only does SWO lose its all-time leading passer, but with Johnathan Haggerty moving on, they need to replace their all-time leading receiver (173 receptions for 2,726 yards and 23 career TDs). Cody Gragg, the leading returning receiver, had 17 receptions for 164 yards and no TDs.

Offensive Line - The Bulldogs didn't lose anyone here, but there needs to be improvement. They gave up an LSC high 46 sacks, and the running game averaged a league worst 1.6 yards per carry. Stephen Speer was a 2nd LSC North selection last year, and Jordan Pettitt was in 2008.

Defensive Line - Nick Walker garnered honorable mention honors last season and had 62 tackles, with 10.5 for losses and 5 sacks. Tim Stephenson and Curry Read combined for another 46 tackles, but just 4 for losses. Teams averaged 4.9 yards per carry and 191 per game last year, while generating just 15 sacks as a team.

Need Depth:
Linebacker - Fred Lead was named first team All-LSC North in 2009, and Jaron Burgess was in 2008. They combined for 165 tackles last year, with 12.5 for losses.

Secondary - Shane Scott had 100 tackles last year, Jesse Wright had 66 and Iziah Perry had 49. As a group, the returning players had 1 interception total.

Good Quality/Depth:

Josh Dorman threw for more than 7,500 yards the past two seasons, with 82 TD passes and just 12 interceptions, earning honorable mention All-State honors both seasons. Mike Van Deripe transferred from Golden West College and could provide immediate help after throwing for more than 5,000 yards the past two seasons. At running back, Isaac Tucker looks to make an impact - he rushed for 790 yards while at Citrus College, leading the team both seasons. Dexter Braziel and Trevion Miller are also players to watch for in the future. Cory Hines, who had 138 receptions for almost 2,100 yds and 23 touchdowns the past two seasons, was ESPN's #224 WR prospect, while Jordan Davis, Kevin Roberts (OCA Class 3A East All State team) and Tommy Cogburn were highly rated as well. Carlos Cuevas is the top newcomer on the offensive line. He was the #78 guard prospect in the nation in 2007. He is transferring in from Utah State. On the defensive line, Chase Neumann was an OCA All-State selection. At linebacker, transfers Preston Margain and Bronze Withem and high schooler Ryan Feller are players to watch. Jonathan Darby and Marvin Tribble are another pair of California junior college players who will help out in the fall.

LSC Ranking - 11

Overall Grade- B
The Bulldogs need help in a lot of areas and signed 50 recruits. They have decided the high school only approach was not going to yield positive results quickly enough. A dozen junior college transfers bring depth and will compete for playing time at just about every position. The high schools were not overlooked, and the DFW area has provided SWO with some good future prospects. A solid class overall.
