Changes in leadership at SWO

From the SWO Website

Southwestern Oklahoma State University long-time Athletics Director Cecil Perkins has accepted a new assignment, and Kelli Litsch has been named interim AD at SWOSU effective June 1, 2008.

Perkins, who has been the AD since 1981, will serve as a special assistant under President John Hays. Litsch, who has been associate athletics director at SWOSU since 1996, is well-known for her basketball accolades.

SWOSU President John Hays has plans for Perkins. Hays said it is imperative that SWOSU enhance its efforts to recruit and retain more students on both the Weatherford and Sayre campuses. SWOSU must make every effort possible to continue to improve its relationships with school and community leaders throughout western Oklahoma.

“Cecil Perkins is the ideal person to assist the university in these efforts,” Hays said. “He is one of the best known and most admired persons in this part of the state.”

Perkins has overseen a myriad of changes in the Bulldogs’ athletics program, culminating with a move to NCAA Division II in 1997. Under his watch, SWOSU teams have won 12 national championships—six in rodeo, five in women’s basketball and one in football.

A 1960 graduate of SWOSU, Perkins began his coaching career at Carnegie High School and then held coaching positions at Northern Oklahoma Junior College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University before coming back to SWOSU in 1981, when he assumed the AD and golf coach duties.

Perkins is a member of three halls of fame, including the SWOSU Athletic Hall of Fame, NWOSU Sports Hall of Fame and NAIA Hall of Fame.

Litsch won championships, set records and brought a new spotlight to women’s basketball during her remarkable playing career, first at Thomas High School and later at SWOSU. She became the first NAIA player to be selected as a first team All-American four consecutive years. She ended her magical run at SWOSU on teams that combined for a 129-5 record and as the NAIA all-time record holder in points with 2,700.

Litsch has served in numerous roles at SWOSU, including NCAA compliance officer, Title IX officer, senior women’s administrator, and adviser to the Student Athlete Advisory Council.
She has been inducted into four halls of fame: SWOSU Athletic Hall of Fame, NAIA Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Women’s National Basketball Hall of Fame.

Baseball weekend matchups (3/2)

Tarleton State (9-11, 4-8) at Angelo State (15-5, 10-2)
Danny Morris loses his first game of the season as Angelo wins the series opener 6-2. Sean Winschler went 8 strong innings for the Rams and is now 5-0 on the season.
ASU takes game two 7-4 as Elkind wins his third game of the season, and Clay Calfee chips in with 3 rbi.
7-3 ASU in game three as Shan Sullivan drives in 3 runs to support Brett Nightengale's strong outing.
Angelo State sweeps the series with a 10-2 win in game four. Bradley Durst scattered 10 hits and went the distance allowing just 2 earned runs. Brian Rasberry hit his first home run of the season and drove in 4 runs .
The Texans are scoring right at 8 runs a game, while the Rams are putting up 7 per contest. Pitching-wise, ASU has a team ERA of 6.02, while Tarleton State's is at 8.20. However if you take out Danny Morris's numbers (4-0, 3.00 ERA) and TSU's era climbs to right at 10. Should be a lot of offense in San Angelo.

East Central (8-12, 5-7) at Central Oklahoma (14-4, 7-4)
Bronchos take the opener 9-1. Dean McIntyre improves to 3-0 as he goes the distance, giving up 5 hits and only one unearned run. Dustin Dailey knocked in 4 runs.
Another big win for UCO in game one, 14-2. Clint Straka throws 7 innings allowing one earned run, and Breck Draper hits 2 home runs and knocks in 5.
ECU takes game three, 11-10. Lucas Arment drove in 3 for the Tigers, including the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.
ECU salvages a series split winning game four, 14-13, as Dusty Rowland 4 hits and 4 rbi and Jared Owen 4 hits and 2 rbi to lead the Tiger offense. Breck Draper struggled on the mound for UCO, giving up 10 earned runs and 15 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.
This looks like a mismatch on paper. The Bronchos are first in the LSC in batting average and second in ERA. ECU is 12th in batting average and 8th in ERA. The Bronchos are ranked in the top 20 in both baseball polls.

West Texas A&M (5-11, 3-8) at Southwestern Oklahoma (6-10, 4-7)
WTAM takes the opener 8-4. Brian Schupp drove in 3 and scored 2, while Billy Zeleznak allowed just one earned run in 7 innings.
SWO takes game two 9-0, as Max Grocki throws a 2-hit shutout. Three Bulldogs each had 2 hits and drove in two as well.
Game 3 is a wild one, 21-20 for the Bulldogs. 7 Buffs drove in at least 2 runs, while Blain Perkins, Dakota Streber and Dakota James go a combined 11-18, scoring 7 runs and knocking in 11. WTAM scored 11 runs in the sixth inning
Game 4 is a pitchers duel in comparison, but SWO wins a 14-13 squeaker - Jonathan Fontenant has 5 rbi for SWO.
While the Buffs and Bulldogs are both in the lower half of the LSC in batting, they both have individuals enjoying great seasons so far. For WTAM, Brian Schupp is hitting .439, with an LSC leading 9 HRs and 22 RBIs. SWO's Dakota Streber is hitting .500 with 2 HRs, but only 8 RBIs in an offense not producing much. The Bulldog's pitching has been pretty good with an overall ERA of 5.24 (3rd in the LSC) and having faced ACU and TAMK.

Eastern New Mexico (10-6, 4-4) at Cameron (11-9, 5-7)
Cameron wins the opener 4-3 in 10 innings, as Josh Mathiesen hits a walk-off home run.
Tyler Hayes and Ethan Wagner each have 4 rbi to lead ENMU to a 15-13 win in game two, while Blake Watson drove in 5 for the Aggies.
Cameron responds with 4-0 victory in game 3. Brad Birchel throws a 4 hit shutout and Blake Watson continues his productive hitting with two more rbi.
For the third time this season, ENMU eclipses 20 runs in a game and split the series with Cameron as they win game four, 20-7. ENMU broke open a 3-3 tie with 7 runs in the sixth inning , including a grand slam by Freddy Carmona.
ENMU offense is averaging just over 11 runs a game and its a good thing, because they are allowing over 8. Cameron, meanwhile is in the middle of the pack both batting and pitching, despite playing a tougher schedule.

Southeastern Oklahoma (7-9, 6-6) at Northeastern State (7-9, 3-5)
SEO takes game one 10-6. Randall Clay hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 8th to put SEO ahead. NSU committed 4 errors, leading to 6 unearned runs.
Game 2 is a football score of 21-10 in favor of SEO. The Savage Storm trailed 10-2 after 4 innings, but busted loose for 19 runs the rest of the way. Josh Rorex hit 3 HRs and knocked in 6 runs.
NSU takes game 3, 9-6

SEO wins game four, 6-4. Tyler Johnson and Robbie Morris each had 2 run homers for SEO.
On paper, this series looks like it should be close. SEO has outscored their opponents by 13 runs so far, while NSU has a 12 run advantage. NSU took two from Central Missouri earlier and split two games with Ouchita Baptist, while SEO opened their season with Angelo State and also split two games with Ouchita Baptist, including a 23-2 rout in game one Tuesday. In fact these two teams have given OBU their only two losses this season.

Abilene Christian (9-9, 8-3) at Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-7, 7-5)
The Wildcats turned 4 double plays and took advantage of 12 walks by Javelina pitchers to take a 10-2 decision in game one. Bret Maynard struck out 7 in 6 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs. With the score tied in the sixth, Anthony Walsh hit a 3-run triple to give ACU the lead.
In game 2, with the score tied 5-5 after 7 innings, ACU breaks loose for 9 runs. Mike Elkerson hits a grand slam for the Wildcats.
Chris Wiman and Josh Livingston dueled for most of the night. In the end it was Livingston getting the win for TAMK, 3-2. ACU tied the score in the top of the seventh with a two-out double by William Uechi, but freshman Will Mettlach hit a walk off HR to lead off the bottom of the inning.

ACU blew open a 1-0 game in the fourth inning, scoring 7 unearned runs, and won game four 15-8. Matt Spotanski and J.J. Pacheco each drove in 3 runs for ACU.
Don't let ACU's 6-8 record fool you - three of the series opponents (Delta State, Southern Arkansas, and UCO) have a combined 33-7 record. Last weekend's series split could give them confidence down the road. TAMK's record is better than expected at this point, but their schedule hasn't been as challenging. This weekend will be their sternest test to date. Offensively the teams have performed equally so far, but there is a big difference in the pitching numbers so far. TAMK leads the LSC with an ERA of 3.66, while ACU is in the middle of the pack at 6.67.

Recruiting Snapshots

We know that recruiting is an inexact science. High school success and expert rankings don't always pan out on the field. Also, not all student athletes complete four years of college football for a variety of reasons. To top it off, some signings are missing and transfers haven't been made available from all schools. Despite those obstacles, we will be spending the next couple of weeks looking into each LSC team's (and Incarnate Word's) announced signing lists, and seeing how the addressed their needs.

First up is three-time defending LSC champion West Texas A&M.
Tuesday - a look at playoff qualifier Abilene Christian.
Wednesday - what did Tarleton State do to get over the hump?
Thursday - did Midwestern State replace 9 first or second team All-LSC players, (including 2 who were honored on multiple All-American teams)?
Friday - who did Texas A&M-Kingsville bring in to get try and return to their winning ways?
Monday - did Angelo State reinforce their defense?
Tuesday - How did Eastern New Mexico do in overhauling their roster?
Wednesday - Now for the LSC North and a look at Southeastern Oklahoma.
Thursday - Did Southwestern Oklahoma get some playmakers?
Friday - Texas A&M Commerce fills in the gaps for a title run.
Tuesday - Did the coaching change help or hinder Northeastern State in recruiting?
Wednesday - Was Coach Holland able to overcome a late start and bring in a good class for Central Oklahoma?
Thursday - Did East Central replenish their defense?

A freshman football player with the Midwestern State University football team was critically injured in a two-car collision late Friday, according to MSU Head Coach Bill Maskill.

About midnight Friday, Jeff Williams of Lufkin and former player and MSU student Brett Davis of McKinney, Texas, were in a Ford Mustang that collided with a pickup driven by Albert Jackson Gee, 22.

Gee was arrested and charged with intoxication assault in connection with the accident that occurred at the intersection of Maplewood and Southwest Parkway.

His bond was set at $3,500, and he was free Saturday from the Wichita County
Jail.

Both Williams and Davis were rushed to United Regional Health Care System’s 11th Street Campus, where Williams remains.

Davis was treated and released, but Williams is in intensive care, Maskill said in a phone interview Saturday afternoon.

United Regional listed Williams in stable condition.

“It’s heartbreaking to have anyone involved in an accident,” Maskill said. As a coach, “you feel like you’re responsible” when something happens to a player.

The coach got the call moments after the accident and called Williams’ parents, and then he said he went to the hospital.

When he arrived, he saw the support that Williams had from fellow MSU players and students.

About 30 people, and not just MSU football players, were at Williams’ side.

“He’s well liked….. He’s a very quiet, unassuming kid,” Maskill said. “You wouldn’t know he was in a room if you were there with him.”

Williams’ family made the drive from southeast Texas to be at his side.

The freshman’s prognosis was unclear at press time, but Maskill heard a promising report from one of United Regional’s medical staff who told him Williams might be able to return to the field next year.

NCAA places UCO on three years probation

On Wednesday, the NCAA Division II Committee on infractions announced that the University of Central Oklahoma was placed on three years probation for rules violations by the football program. In addition to the three year probation, there will be an additional reduction of 2 scholarships this academic year, as well as a reduction of 4 scholarships during the 08-09 and 09-10 academic years, and the football team cannot appear on television from Feb. 20, 2008-Feb 19, 2010.

A two-year "show cause" order coach Chuck Langston was imposed as well. Any school wanting to hire Langston for an athletic-related position must appear before the infractions committee to determine whether his duties should be limited.

Southeastern Oklahoma (2-7, 2-5) at Eastern New Mexico (8-3, 2-1)
Luis Estrella goes the distance to pick up his first win in the opener, as SEO wins 7-2. He alloweds just 2 runs on 5 hits and struck out 12. Trey Wingo drove in 3 and he and Randall Clay each had homers for SEO. Jonathan Marbury had 3 of ENMU's 5 hits including 2 solo homers.

Game three also goes to ENMU, as they score the final 7 runs of the game to win 12-6. Only 13 hits this time for the Greyhounds, but Ismael Solis goes the distance, allowing 6 earned runs in 7 innings, improving his record to 2-0.

SEO takes the finale 22-1, to split the series. With the score 2-1 in favor of SEO after four innings, the Savage Storm exploded for 8 runs in the fifth, and 12 more the rest of the way. Trey Wingo drove in 7 runs and Randall Clay and Ryan Bowen each drove in 4.

Northeastern State (5-6, 1-2) at Tarleton State (9-6, 4-3)

Texans take opener 6-2. Danny Morris pitched 8 innings of 6-hit ball and improved to 4-0 on the season. Greg Terpenning knocked in the go ahead runs with a two run double in the fourth. Jimmy Pike had three hits in a losing effort for the Riverhawks.

Game two to the Riverhawks in a slugfest that makes the ENMU-SEO game or the ECU-WTAM series look like a pitchers duels. NSU scored in every inning to take a 31-20 win over Tarleton. Chris Bennet gets the victory, despite giving up 12 runs in 3 and a third innings. LINK TO BOX SCORE. The teams combined 47 hits, for 11 doubles, a triple, and 10 HRs. Just too many hitting heroes to single anyone out.

Game three a relatively mild 7-6 Texan win. Greg Terpenning went the distance for Tarleton, allowing just 7 hits and striking out 8. Justin Delay did hit a 2 run, 2 out HR to draw NSU to within one, but Jimmy Pike flew out to end the game and a wild day in Stephenville.

Jacob Etzkorn got his first win of the season as the Riverhawks beat Tarleton 10-3 to gain a split in the weekend series. Joel Eusebio had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs to lead NSU.

Matchup of the Week

Central Oklahoma (11-2, 5-2) at Abilene Christian (6-8, 5-2)

Trailing 3-0 after three innings, UCO outscores ACU 7-1 the rest of the way to win the opener 7-4. Tyler Carroll led the way with 3 hits, including a home run, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs and even stole a base.

ACU needed a triple play in the eighth inning to hold off UCO 12-11 in game one Saturday. Cameron Satten drove in 3 runs and 4 other Wildcats knocked in 2. Mike Moctezuma had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs for UCO.

The Bronchos salvaged a split, winning the second game 12-10. Breck Draper went 3-3, knocking in 2 runs and scoring twice. UCO led 10-3 after 4 innings and held on to a 12-10 win. Trey Watten hit his second home run of the season in a losing effort.

Matt Spotanski had the big 2 run single in the seventh to put ACU on top 3-1. Trey Watten outdueled Breck Draper, throwing a complete game, limiting UCO to 6 hits and one unearned run.

In boxing terms, this would qualify as a no decision - Both teams landed some big punches, but no one was knocked out. ACU has to be pleased with winning 2 of the last three and beating Draper, while UCO should be happy to travel to Abilene and leave with a split.

No so fast my friend

Our apologies to Lee Corso for stealing his line, but it is fitting in this instance.

It was reported a few weeks back that Allen Johnson was leaving Midwestern State to become the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M Commerce. Apparantley that is not going to happen after all. It now appears that Johnson will become the cornerback coach at the University of Texas-El Paso. The Times-Record News even points out his brief "tenure" at Commerce, but the UTEP news release omits that minor detail.

UCO women need a win to stay a game in front of SEO, who should beat Cameron.
NSU men's tourney hopes would go to about 90% with an upset here.

66 Angelo State 96
68 Midwestern State 89 in OT
Mustang men outscore ASU 9-0 over last 1:14, Richardson had 8 of those points including the game winner with one second to play.

MSU women out with a loss here.
Same for the MSU men. ASU loss would put them on life support.

63 Abilene Christian 66
66 Tarleton State 63
ACU men would get a huge boost with a win, a loss doesn't really hurt though.

75 Southwestern Oklahoma 62
86 Texas A&M-Commerce 68

Women - SWO needs a win to not fall behind SEO, and further behind UCO. TAMC clinches tourney spot with win.
SWO men have had several close calls lately. A TAMC win virtually puts them in tourney, a loss doesn't really hurt them.

72 Southeastern Oklahoma 82

LSC Basketball Power Poll - Week Six

  1. 19-4 UCO - (LW 1) Should keep cruising this week.
  2. 20-3 Tarleton (2) Big matchup against WTAM Saturday.
  3. 18-6 WTAM (4) Survived scare vs. MSU, two big games at home this week, TAMK and Tarleton.
  4. 20-4 SWO - (3) Flirting with disaster, only a late 3 pointer saved them from SEO. Will they beat TAMC on the road?
  5. 16-8 TAMK (5) OK, so MSU beats Tarleton, Tarleton beats TAMK, and TAMK beats MSU? An upset Wednesday could give them big momentum down the stretch.
  6. 17-6 Abilene (7) win over Angelo St. huge, may be difference in playoff race. A win over TSU would be nice, but MSU more important.
  7. 14-9 Angelo St (6) playoff chances slipping away. Need to sweep ENMU and MSU for any chance.
  8. 11-12 Midwestern St (8) WTAM game slipped away, letdown at Kingsville. Must sweep ACU and ASU for any chance at playoffs.
  9. 10-14 TAMC (10) easing toward LSC tourney.
  10. 11-13 Northeastern St (11) got their upset over TAMC, almost over SWO as well.
  11. 13-11 ECU (9) not likely to move up this week.
  12. 6-18 ENMU (12) double digit losses becoming more common.
  13. 4-19 Cameron (13) ECU loss just about killed any tournament possibility.
  14. 3-20 SEO (14) young team not giving up, nearly shocked SWO.

East Central (4-8, 1-3) at Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-2, 3-1)
ECU wins opener 10-9, TAMK takes last three 5-0, 18-3, 3-0
Ortinginally scheduled for Ada, this series was moved to Kingsville due to inclement weather. ECU was swept by Central Missouri last week 4-0, 8-6, and 16-5. They are hitting .282, scoring 4.5 runs per game, while allowing just over 7. Their starting pitching has been good, with 3 starters sporting ERAs at 3.60 or lower. Dusty Rowland is hitting.423 with 10 RBI. TAMK beat UT-Brownsville 5-1 and Texas A&M-International 20-3 last week, extending their winning streak to three. They are hitting .344 scoring just under 11 runs per game, while allowing just under 6. Six starters are hitting .333 or higher.

Abilene Christian (4-5, 3-0) at Southwestern Oklahoma (2-6, 0-3)
ACU Sweeps 6-1, 15-5, 10-1
The Wildcats are off to a very slow start, having dropped 5 in a row after winning their opener. Their opponents, Delta State and Southern Arkansas were a combined 86-33 last year and this year are currently tied for the #10 national ranking. They are hitting .294, scoring 6.7 runs per game, while allowing 10.3. Trey Watten is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA (the only starter under 8.00). Mike Elkerson leads the offense with a .524 average and 8 RBI. Dakota Streber leads the team with a .647 average and 5 RBI.

Tarleton State (7-4, 2-2) at Cameron (84, 2-2)Series moved to Tarleton
Teams split series TSU 9-0, 10-6, Cameron 11-3, 14-13
The Texans were blasted by St Marys 21-5, after sweeping a three-game series with Henderson State 14-10, 7-4, and 10-9. They are hitting .333, scoring 7.5 per game, while giving up 8.6 (drops to 6.9 if you take out the St Mary's game). Six batters are hitting over .300. Greg Sillivent has 2 homers and 13 RBI to lead the offensive attack. Cameron dropped two to Central Missouri last week, after taking 4 from Pittsburg State earlier. They are hitting .278 and are scoring 4.3 per game. The pitching has been impressive, allowing just under 3 runs per game, and not allowing more than 4 in any game so far. The ERAs of their starters range from 2.57 to 3.24.

Recruiting Preview and Team Needs

Central Oklahoma
Needs - QB, DL and LB (O'Hara, Lewis and Clewis gone)
Depth - OL, DB, RB (8 of 10 OL will be Srs, need depth behind Birmingham)
Okay - WR (return almost all)

Ryan O'Hara wasn't a world beater, but was a two year starter that needs to be replace. Clewis was a world beater, and the Bronchos likely won't fill that void with equal talent.

East Central
Needs - WR, DL, LB, and DB lose their top players at these positions
Depth - RB (Holland needs help), OL (only 9 OL on roster that have remaining eligibility)
Okay - QB Jackson a good one, but what if he gets hurt

Defense loses 4 top tacklers (7 of top 10) and wasn't stellar to begin with (35 pts, 457 yds per game). Who will Jackson throw to?

Northeastern State
Needs - OL, QB, WR (lost 2 second team and 1 HM All-LSC OL, QB was a weakness last year, only 1 WR with more than 9 catches expected to return)
Depth - LB, DL, DB, RB (some good players return, especially DB Mondy and RB Lewis, but need more around them)
Okay - ST (first team kicker, HM punter to return)

Outside of Josh Lewis, the whole offense needs to be replenished or upgraded. The defense looks to be in better shape, but won't get the Riverhawks to the playoffs on their own.

Southeastern Oklahoma
Needs - DL, RB (lose top 2 DL, and RB Sean Cooper)
Depth - OL, LB, DB (lose 3 OL)
Okay - WR, QB (Top 5 receivers return + maybe some ineligilble from last year, QB moves to needs if Pitrucha isn't back)

SEO's recruiting class will be a success if Justin Pitrucha is eligible in the fall. Defense needs to get better, esepcially against the run.

Southwestern Oklahoma
Needs - OL, DL, RB (OL loses two first team All-LSC, DL loses two second teamers, RB just needs help)
Depth - QB, WR, DB (Day only QB with experience, Haggerty only WR w/more than 20 catches)
Okay - LB, Special Teams (McCoy and Franklin return at LB)

SWO needs to replenish the lines and add some playmakers on offense.

Texas A&M-Commerce

Needs - OL, WR and LB - lost a total of 5 first team All-LSC players
Depth - top RB and QBs will be Srs
Okay - DL and DB each return 2 first team All-LSC players

The Lions will have a lot of seniors returning. A good chance for them to have that breakout year that has been expected in recent times.

Abilene Christian
Needs - OL, DL (lose a lot on both sides of the trenches)
Depth - WR, LB (need a WR to keep teams from double teaming Knox, lose steady LB Stutts)
Okay - QB, RB, DB (top 3 QBs back, top 3 RBs back, DB is deep w/returnees)

If the defense can just improve to above average, the Wildcats could make a serious run in the playoffs. A lot of seniors, this is their best chance since 1977.

Angelo State
Needs - DL, LB, DB (Rams don't lose many, but level of play must get better)
Depth - OL, RB, QB (good players in place, just need more)
Okay - WR (not scheduled to lose anyone)

Angelo State is very young, and could use help all over (even more depth at WR wouldn't be a bad thing.)

Eastern New Mexico
Needs - QB, WR, RB, OL (Switching from the option to the spread?)
Depth - DL, LB, DB (take out Bacone and OPSU games, ENMU gave up 440+ yds and 34 pts per game)
Okay -

The Greyhounds are apparently throwing in the towel on the option, which means they basically need to replace their offense. Defense loses some of their better players and they struggled as it was.

Midwestern State
Needs - Coaches, QB, WR, OL (Daniel Polk, DelJuan Lee, Tony Burson, Immanuel Sennett gone)
Depth - DL, DB (lose 2 second team All-LSC DL, and 1 first and 2 second teamers at DB)
Okay - RB, LB (plenty of good bodies to replace those leaving)

The Mustangs lose a lot of talent - Daniel Polk first and foremost, but also both the OC and the DC, and a total of 9 first or second team All-LSC performers. Last year may have been their best shot to break out.

Tarleton State
Needs - DB, LB, OL (Many of the top Texans were here)
Depth - DL (Miles will be hard to replace)
Okay - QB, RB, WR (good and good depth at all the offensive skill positions)

The Texans may have to take a page from ACU's playbook last year and outscore teams to win. They lose more than a ton of talent including 4 first team All-LSC on defense and 2 on the offensive line.

Texas A&M-Kingsville
Needs - RB, DL, DB (leading RB only had 226 yds, lost 2 DTs, and DBs that had 75% of INTs)
Depth - OL, QB (OL only loses two but needs to improve, only had 3 QBs last year, all frosh and all played)
Okay - WR, LB (should return everyone at these spots)

Didn't lose many seniors, but are thin at spots and need to get better at others.

West Texas A&M
Needs - OL (lose 3 top linemen)
Depth - LB, DB, DL (a lot of seniors in these spots next year)
Okay - QB, RB, WR (good and deep here with backups ready to contribute when called upon)

With all the seniors on the Buffalo roster, next year might be their year if they can re-tool the OL.

The Story below is from the Texas A&M-Kingsville Athletic Website

From Houston Jones High School, to Texas A&I, to the Washington Redskins and then to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It was announced today that former Javelina great Darrell Green will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on on Saturday, August 2, 2008 in Canton, Ohio. Green joined former Washington Redskin teammate Art Monk, New England linebacker Andre Tippett, San Diego/San Francisco defensive end Fred Dean, Minnesota/Denver tackle Gary Zimmerman and senior committee choice, Kansas City cornerback Emmitt Thomas.
Green is one of the best-known players ever in the National Football League and a two-sport All-American at Texas A&I.
Green retired after the 2002 season after 20 years with the Washington Redskins. He was a first-round draft pick after finishing his career with the Javelinas.
Green played football for four years at Texas A&I and was on the track and field team for three years.
From Houston Jones High School, Green was an Associated Press Little All-America and American Football Coaches Association All-America first-team honoree. He was on the All-Lone Star Conference first team as a junior and senior and was selected as the LSC’s most valuable player in 1982. He was selected by his teammates as a captain in 1982.
He was selected to the Lone Star Conference Team of the Decade for the 1980s.
Green got much of his collegiate notability in track.
His first meet came in the spring of 1981 in San Angelo and he ran a 10.08 in the 100-meter dash. That was the beginning of his reputation as one of the world’s fastest runners. The mark still stands as the all-time best in the Lone Star Conference.
Green holds the Lone Star Conference records, which are set at the annual conference meet, in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. His times are 10.22 in the 100 and 20.67 in the 200.
His all-time collegiate best in the 100 was 10.08, 20.50 in the 200 and 45.90 in the 400. He ran on relay teams that recorded 40.43 in the 400 and 3:10.06 in the 1600.
He was named the most valuable track performer at the 1982 and 1983 Lone Star Conference Championships. He won gold medals at the LSC meet in the 100-meter dash in 1981, in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in 1982 and in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in 1983.
Green was named to the NCAA Division I All-America roster in 1981 and 1982, and was on the NCAA Division II All-America team in five events in 1981 and 1982. He was NAIA All-America in 1981 and 1982 in four events.
Green was on All-America first teams in track and field 10 different times.
Green has been inducted into the NCAA Division II Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor and the Javelina Hall of Fame.
In his first season with the Redskins in 1983, Green was named the NFL Rookie of the Year.
He was a seven-time All-Pro defensive back, four-time NFL Fastest Man honoree and two-time Super Bowl championship team member.
Green, a first round draft pick (28th overall) by the Washington Redskins in the 1983 NFL Draft, enjoyed instant success in the NFL. As a rookie, he set the tone for things to come when he scored the very first time he touched the football. That touchdown came on a 61-yard punt return in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Green started all 16 regular season games during his rookie campaign and finished fourth on the team in tackles with 109 that included a team-leading 79 solo stops. He was runner-up for the Associated Press NFL Rookie of the Year Award.
During his first regular-season game with the Redskins, he made his first hallmark play when he chased down the legendary Tony Dorsett of the Dallas Cowboys to prevent a touchdown.

He holds the following NFL and Redskin records:
*First NFL player to make at least one interception in 19 consecutive seasons.
*First NFL player to return an interception for a touchdown at age 37.
*First NFL player to play cornerback at the age of 42.
*First Redskin to play 20 consecutive seasons, start in 254 games and play 279 games.
*First Redskin to have 54 interceptions.
*First Redskin to return a fumble 78 yards for a touchdown, longest in Redskin history.
*First Redskin to return six interceptions for touchdowns

In all, Green totaled a club record 54 interceptions for 621 yards and six touchdowns. He also added two additional touchdowns on interception returns in the post-season. Three times he recorded a career-best of five interceptions in a season (1984, 1986, and 1991). He registered a career-high three interceptions in a game against the Detroit Lions on November 15, 1987.
Known for his speed, something he never lost even as he played into his 40s, Green also had success as a punt returner. He averaged nearly 12 yards a return as he recorded 51 career returns for 611 yards. In addition, he owns the team record for longest fumble return – a 78-yard TD against the Colts in 1993.
Green played in four NFC championship games and three Super Bowls including the team’s victory in Super Bowls XXII and XXVI. In the 1987 NFC Championship Game, on a pivotal fourth-down pass play at the goal line late in the game, Green jarred the ball from Minnesota’s Darrin Nelson to secure a Redskins 17-10 victory that catapulted the team into Super Bowl XXII.
Green was named All-Pro in 1986, 1987, 1990, and 1991 and voted to seven Pro Bowls. He is also a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s.
His passionate commitment to strengthening families and helping children is at the center of his long-range goals and was the impetus for the founding of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF).
Since 1988, the DGYLF has offered opportunities for children and their families. The DGYLF provides a wide-range of academic development and values-based education programs through learning centers operating in select urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods throughout America. Green considers the Darrell Green Youth Life Learning Center (DGLC) the centerpiece of the DGYLF. The DGLC was established in 1993 to equip youth to address obstacles they face while training them to provide quality leadership for their peers, family members, and their community. The DGLC flagship center in Northeast Washington, DC and its Richmond, VA, and Nashville, TN affiliates currently operate in the DGYLF network with an expansion plan for other centers underway.
He has founded the Darrell Green Business Council for Youth bringing together business leaders to utilize their expertise in support of DGYLF programs. In addition, he served as a board member for the Baltimore-Washington 2012 Olympic Bid, NFL/NFLPA September 11th Relief Fund, and the Loudoun Education Foundation.
In 2003, he was selected to serve as the Chair of President Bush’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The Council consists of an outstanding group of Americans who will work together to strengthen and promote service and civic participation. He currently sits on the boards of the WolfTrap Foundation as its National Spokesman for Education, Washington, DC’s Board of Trade, and Marymount University.
Green has also flourished in the business arena, successfully operating a number of companies in a variety of industries under the conglomerate, Darrell Green Holdings. Darrell Green Enterprises manages endorsements, speaking engagements, and autograph signings for a growing roster of current and former athletes. Intekras, Inc is an SBA-certified 8(a) company offering integrated solutions in three primary disciplines: Information Security, National Security and Defense Systems. Trusted Solutions Group specializes in providing training and workforce development solutions to government and industry.
Green completed his Bachelor of Science degree in general studies and social science at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. In 1999, Marymount University recognized Green for his extraordinary humanitarian endeavors and conferred upon him the honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree. In 2002, George Washington University and St. Paul’s College awarded Green his second and third honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degrees.
He has received the NFL/True Value Man of the Year award, the NFL Bart Starr Award, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year honor, the Redskin Alumni Player of the Year award, the Redskins Most Valuable Player award, the Ken Houston Humanitarian Award, the USA Today Most Caring Athlete Award, the U.S. Sprint Good Sportsmanship Award, the Redskins Player of the Year honor, the Sporting News Good Guy Award, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Ten Outstanding Young Americans Award and the Sporting News Top 100 Athletes of the Century Award.
In December 2007, he was voted the All-Time Redskins Legend in a WUSA-TV Channel 9 online poll.
He and his wife, Jewell, have three children: Jerrell, Jared and Joi. They reside in the Washington D.C. area.
