Javelinas Make Some Changes For Upcoming Season (with video)
KINGSVILLE - The Annual Lone Star Conference Football Media Day is Thursday afternoon in Dallas, and the Javelina football team is just over eight days from opening practice.
Just three wins in Atterberry's first campaign, the Hogs went 7 and 4 last season, earning some much deserved respect. This year, a lot of people expect the Javelinas to contend for the conference crown. They have beefed up their offensive line, added some talent in the backfield, plus their returning star signal-caller Billy Garza.
McCarty's quick search
ADA — For most head football coaches, finding a suitable replacement for a veteran defensive coordinator with his team on the cusp of preseason practice would be almost impossible. For East Central University head man Tim McCarty, it required just one phone call.
McCarty admitted he was caught by surprise When Todd Fugett announced last week that he was leaving ECU after 15 seasons — 13 as defensive coordinator — to go to work for the Chickasaw Nation. The Tigers are due to open preseason camp on Aug. 6 and open their season three weeks later at Nebraska-Omaha, and with all of the team’s defensive assistants just beginning their coaching careers, promoting from within was pretty much out of the question.
Ex-Steele RB headed to UIW
Former Steele running back Keith Brown has completed his transfer from Mississippi to Incarnate Word. Brown, who will also run track at UIW, will be eligible to play immediately when the school opens its first training camp on Aug. 5.
Brown ran track last year at Mississippi, leading the team with a 6.88 in the 60-meter dash and a 10.68 in the 100. He only played one season of football at Steele, scoring 11 touchdowns.
ACU volleyball team earns academic award
The Abilene Christian University volleyball team has been honored with an academic award from the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association for the 2008-09 season.
The Wildcats had seven players honored as academic all-Lone Star Conference players last season, and the team posted a cumulative 3.48 grade point average.
Rams sign 2nd-round pick Laurinaitis, Ohio State linebacker
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams signed three draft picks Wednesday, including second-rounder James Laurinaitis.
Only first-round pick Jason Smith, an offensive tackle from Baylor who was the second overall selection, remained unsigned. Practice begins Thursday for quarterbacks, rookies and selected veterans with the first full-squad workout under new coach Steve Spagnuolo on Friday.
The Rams also signed fourth-rounder Darell Scott, a defensive tackle from Clemson, and sixth-rounder Keith Null, a quarterback from West Texas A&M.

Deason ECU's new defensive coordinator
ADA – Justin Deason hopes to bring a winning edge to East Central University’s football program this fall.
Deason, who was an ECU assistant for two seasons in 2004-05, was named the Tigers’ new defensive coordinator on Tuesday, replacing longtime assistant Todd Fugett, who stepped down last week to pursue a career with the Chickasaw Nation.
Deason spent the last three seasons as linebackers’ coach and special teams coordinator at highly-successful West Texas A&M.
“We’re very pleased to have Justin back at East Central. He gained some valuable insight, coming from a championship-type program at West Texas A&M,” said ECU head coach Tim McCarty. “He’s an excellent coach and a great recruiter off a successful team in the Lone Star Conference. We’re excited about what he is going to bring to the table. He’s an up-and-coming young coach who brings a successful resume’ to East Central.”
Sigwing Selected as the Seventh Head Coach of Zia Softball Program
Eastern New Mexico University athletic director, Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced the selection of Lauren Sigwing as the new head coach of the Zia softball program. Sigwing is no stranger to the highly competitive nature of NCAA Division II softball, having served as a graduate assistant at Northwest Missouri State, and played collegiately at Central Missouri State in the Mid-American Athletic Association. Most recently, she served a three-year stint at Fort Scott Community College and led the program to its best season in 2009, winning 36 games.
Malone commits to Tarleton State
Recent Stephenville High School graduate Chris Malone, a wide receiver, has committed to playing football this fall at Tarleton State University. Malone, an all-district wide receiver for the Yellow Jackets as a junior and senior, says hes looking forward to playing for the Texans and believes he will enjoy the opportunity to again be teammates with SHS classmate Josh Emmons, who signed with Tarleton in the spring. StephenvilleHead Coach Joseph Gillespie referred to Malone as a kid who loves football and says he has done a wonderful job of always representing Stephenville well.
Angelo State softball names Naumoff as assistant coach
After serving as a graduate assistant for the two seasons, Katie Naumoff has been announced as the new assistant coach for the Angelo State softball program. Naumoff fills the position left open by the departure of Claudia Lopez after the conclusion of the 2009 season.
“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to hire coach Naumoff as a full-time assistant,” ASU head softball coach Travis Scott said. “She has been with the program for two seasons and understands Angelo State softball. Coach Naumoff will be a big asset to the program in the office, in recruiting and on the field.”

One of the featured speakers in Monday’s session of the Oklahoma Coaches Association coaches’ clinic was former Edmond Santa Fe football coach Dan Cocannouer, who left the Wolves late last year to take over at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
"Usually you have to win a state championship to speak at these things,” Cocannouer said. "But I’ve had a great response from the coaches here.”
Cocannouer is making a concentrated effort to recruit in the state. He estimated the Bulldogs had 29 players from Oklahoma on their roster last year. This year, he said, there will be 70 from the state.
The biggest adjustment, Cocannouer said, was relinquishing some control during the off-season.
"I’m used to having summer pride and 7-on-7 and you can’t do those things in college,” he said. "Every time I’ve woke up this month, I start thinking, ‘My gosh, I’ve got to get into the weight room.’ ”
Instead, Cocannouer has spent his time getting settled in — his family is in the process of moving to Weatherford after his house recently sold — and brushing up on NCAA rules.
"There are a lot of NCAA regulations to learn,” Cocannouer said. "I’m scared to death. Every time we do something I ask, ‘Can I do this? Can I do that?’ ”
Paris College pitcher signs with Tarleton
Tarleton head baseball coach Bryan Conger has announced the signing of Chris Pearson to a national letter-of-intent to play baseball for the Texans this coming spring.
Shockers forced to pare down
Five players will not return to Wichita State's baseball team as a result of NCAA rules limiting the number of scholarship athletes.
Infielder Taylor Brown, designated hitter Josh Rosecrans, outfielder Andrew Letourneau and pitchers Clint Maune and Cameron Maldonado are no longer on the roster, according to coach Gene Stephenson. They chose to leave WSU, after being told their scholarships would not be renewed.
"This is difficult," Stephenson said. "It hurts me, personally. It hurts the team, because these were good guys and good teammates who wanted to be here."
Brown, as a sophomore, hit a team-leading .338 and started 43 games, 21 on the infield, nine as the DH and 13 in left field. He was hitting .402 as of April 15 before a slump knocked him out of the lineup. He hit . 219 over the remainder of the season. He will transfer to Central Oklahoma, Stephenson said.

Instead, Cocannouer has spent his time getting settled in — his family is in the process of moving to Weatherford after his house recently sold — and brushing up on NCAA rules.
"There are a lot of NCAA regulations to learn,” Cocannouer said. "I’m scared to death. Every time we do something I ask, ‘Can I do this? Can I do that?’ ”

Shockers forced to pare down
Five players will not return to Wichita State's baseball team as a result of NCAA rules limiting the number of scholarship athletes.
Infielder Taylor Brown, designated hitter Josh Rosecrans, outfielder Andrew Letourneau and pitchers Clint Maune and Cameron Maldonado are no longer on the roster, according to coach Gene Stephenson. They chose to leave WSU, after being told their scholarships would not be renewed.
"This is difficult," Stephenson said. "It hurts me, personally. It hurts the team, because these were good guys and good teammates who wanted to be here."
Brown, as a sophomore, hit a team-leading .338 and started 43 games, 21 on the infield, nine as the DH and 13 in left field. He was hitting .402 as of April 15 before a slump knocked him out of the lineup. He hit . 219 over the remainder of the season. He will transfer to Central Oklahoma, Stephenson said.

Taylor Fore Selected as Nominee for 2009 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team
Texas A&M University-Commerce redshirt sophomore wide receiver Taylor Fore on Thursday was one of 106 nominees for the 2009 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. The award is given to “hard-working and committed college football players” and has nothing to do with touchdowns, tackles or receptions.
In addition to being a member of the Lions' football team, he has served as a volunteer basketball and baseball coach for the Commerce Parks and Recreation Department. This fall, he will serve as the chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He has been involved with the Big Event, a city-wide clean up in Commerce, the Commerce Children’s Museum Father/Daughter Dance and the Hunt County Special Olympics.
A total of 106 student-athlete football players were nominated by sports information directors for the team which honors college football players who make “outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.” The number of nominations is the largest number in the 18-year history of the award and ’09 nominees represent 41 states, including Washington, D. C. and 45 conferences.
From the 106 nominees, a national panel will select two 11-player Good Works Teams, one team composed of players from the NCAA Bowl Subdivision and a combined team from the Championship Subdivision, Divisions II and III and the NAIA.

She played in the MIAA and is very familiar with Division II and the Lone Star Conference. The search committee did an outstanding job and I think we have hired an outstanding softball coach”
In the 2009 season, she guided FSCC to a 36-23 record, including a 17-9 mark in the competitive Jayhawk Conference. The Lady Hounds picked up a doubleheader sweep second place Johnson County and split with third place Pratt. The squad closed their season by earning a second-place finish at the District D Regional Tournament and ended up breaking team records in home runs and stolen bases.
Sigwing attended NCAA Division II Central Missouri State, where she was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association of America All-American Scholar Athlete and a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Presidential Scholar.

James Chandler has been nominated for the 2009 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. Chandler, born in London, England, has been involved in numerous community service projects, including:
- Traveling to Taiwan , May 17- June 2, 2009, to perform missionary work through Baptist Student Ministries.
- Leading Youth Worship and performs Youth Ministry at Believers Way Church in Amarillo , Texas .
- Serving as counselor at Angel Tree Camp in 2008 and will again in 2009. This is a four-day camp, held each August at Ceta Canyon Methodist Camp, outside of Canyon, Texas, which administers to inner-city Amarillo, Texas youths.
- Giving testimonies at West Texas A&M chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He also gave a testimony during the Panhandle-area FCA banquet, as well as speaking at area high-school FCA chapters.
- Making regular visits, along with West Texas A&M teammates, to the Children’s Wards of Amarillo hospitals.
Mustangs lend many helping hands
College and professional athletes have long been considered spoiled, many of them displaying a “what have you done for me lately?” attitude.
But the football coaches for the Midwestern State Mustangs have tried to develop a different attitude on their team — more like “What can we do for you?”
So the Mustangs were involved in several community service projects during the spring semester of 2009.
“We decided in December, as a staff, that we needed to do more things together as a team — off the football field,” head coach Bill Maskill said. “And in doing that, we could do some things within the community.”
Zia Volleyball Team Earns Second Straight AVCA Academic Award
PORTALES, N.M.— For the second consecutive season, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team has been selected for the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. The Zias were one of 46 NCAA Division II teams to receive the award.
The AVCA created the award in the 1992-93 year to honor both college and high school teams that maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or a 4.1 GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Following the 2008 season, Heidi Geyer (OH, Santa Fe, N.M./St. Michaels HS) was selected Academic All-Lone Star Conference, while Caitlin Murphy (L, Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa HS), Vanessa Wilcox (OH, Houston, Texas/Kempner HS), Karen McIntyre (S, Houston, Texas/J. Frank Dobie HS) and Grace Brandt (S, Dumas, Texas/Dumas HS) were named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

The deal includes pregame and postgame shows, and a weekly show with coach Mike Santiago set to air at 7 p.m. each Thursday. ESPN 1250 personality Paul Alexander will provide play-by-play action.
The Cardinals open the season against Monterrey Tech at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 at Benson Stadium.

Fugett steps down after 15-year stay at ECU
ADA – Todd Fugett, East Central University’s third-longest tenured coach, has decided to step down from his assistant football position to accept a customer relations position with the Chickasaw Nation in Ada.
Fugett, a native of Blanchard, has spent the last 15 years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, mostly as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.
“The last 15 years have been an invaluable experience. Being at East Central has allowed me to develop as a person,” said Fugett. “I’ve established some roots. Ada has become my home and given me stability.”
“I’m glad to have worked at my alma mater for 15 years. In the college coaching profession, guys tend to bounce around. I was very fortunate to stay in one place,” Fugett said.
During Fugett’s 15-year stay at ECU, 13 were spent on the defensive side of the ball. He also served as offensive coordinator in 1997 and was special teams’ coordinator in 1998.
Fugett played for the Tigers from 1982-84 as a defensive back as specialized in coaching that area through most of his career.
“Few college football coaches have been around long enough to see young men develop, grow and to become contributing members to society,” said Fugett. “I was always excited when our former players came back to campus and to see how they succeeded with their families and careers.”

Rowe, a junior defensive end on this year’s football team, is a graduate of Alvarado high school. The two year letterman has been very active while attending Tarleton, and not just on the football field.
Rowe is a member of College Life, Refuge and Core while also holding student-athlete Bible studies. He regularly helps hand out meals to the elderly and disabled in Stephenville with other members of the Texan football squad via Meals on Wheels. Other activities he has helped with in Stephenville are the Tri-Star Games, Foster’s Home for Children, Disciple Now, Vacation Bible School and the Tarleton Student Government Association. The Texan has also served on various mission trips and counseled at several summer camps as well as making frequent trips to the retirement homes in Stephenville to visit their residents.
Rowe also sponsors a child through Compassion International and is an active member of a mentoring program.
“This is a great honor for Jacob, our football team and our University,” said Tarleton head football coach Sam McElroy. “There are a great number of kids that do things throughout the year to help others, and for Jacob to be singled out as one of the best means a great deal to us. He certainly deserves this award and the things he does to help others is wonderful. We know he will continue to serve because that is who Jacob is.”

Wesley is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as Junior Deacon at his home church in Navasota, Texas. He is one of four Lone Star Conference student-athletes receiving a nomination.

BILENE – Just a few months before its season begins on the court, the ACU women's basketball team has been recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association for its work in the classroom.
The women's basketball team has been ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for the 2008-09 season. The Wildcats checked in with a team GPA of 3.580 during the season to earn the No. 15 spot. St. Thomas Aquinas College is the top-ranked team in the academic poll with a team GPA of 3.694. Saint Martin's is No. 2 in the poll at 3.668, followed by Ashland at No. 3 (3.647), Michigan Tech (3.653) and ACU. The only other Lone Star Conference team in the rankings for 2008-09 is West Texas A&M, which is No. 24 with a 3.371 team GPA.
The Wildcats have been ranked in the top 25 in each of the 11 academic polls conducted by the WBCA, finishing 17th in 1998-99 to ninth (1999-2000), fifth (2000-1), first (2001-02), fourth (2002-03), fifth (2003-04), 21st (2004-05), ninth (2005-06), 10th (2006-07), 17th (2007-08), and now fifth.
The ACU women's basketball program has a history of academic excellence with four former greats – Claudia Schleyer, Suzanne Johnson, Jennifer Clarkson and Jackie Bucher – earning first team academic all-America honors, and those four plus two others (Cathe Crow and Caroline Omamo) earned NCAA Post-Graduate scholarships.

UTPA taps Downing as next women's basketball coach
EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American has chosen Denny Downing as its next women’s basketball coach.
Downing replaces DeAnn Craft who resigned May 15 after she said she did not feel she had the support of interim athletic director Ricky Vaughn.
Downing beat out two other finalists for the job – Stephen F. Austin assistant Taqueta Braxton and West Georgia University coach Craig Roden.
“I’ll say this, all three of our finalists were extremely qualified,” Vaughn said. “(Downing’s) experience as a head coach really stood out. … With such limited resources, he was able to take Commerce to the Elite Eight.”
Downing said he preferred not to talk about what may have transpired with the program in the past.
“I am just glad to have this opportunity,” he said.
Downing comes to UTPA after seven years at the helm of Division-II Texas A&M-Commerce. He also served as coach at Collin Community College from 2001-02 and as an assistant at Drake University (1994-96) and at Fort Hays State University (1993-94).
Downing helped turned around a once struggling Commerce program, leading the program this past year to its third straight winning for the first time in school history. He also led Commerce to the Division II Elite Eight in 2007.
Downing’s hiring continues a trend in UTPA opting for non-Division I coaches in its major coaching searches.
Ryan Marks, who was hired as the men’s coach in May, arrived from Division II St. Edwards and baseball coach Manny Mantrana came to UTPA via NAIA St. Thomas University in Miami.

ACU football program will meet with NCAA about violations
Abilene Christian University will have a hearing with the NCAA today in Denver, hoping to convince the NCAA to reverse its decision to strip the ACU football program of victories and statistics from the 2007 season.
The NCAA on Feb. 12 penalized the ACU football and track and field teams for several infractions, mostly in the track and field program. Both programs were put on probation for two years.
The football team, though, was hit the hardest. The team had to vacate its 10 victories and statistics from those wins because, the NCAA reported, two assistant coaches helped two junior college recruits become academically eligible to play for the Wildcats in the 2007 season.
Big man on campus
When the Northeastern State football team takes the field this season, one player who will undoubtedly attract a lot of attention from the opponent is senior nose tackle TJ Raymond.
At 6-foot-2, 285 pounds, Raymond is not only one of the largest players on the field, but also one of the best. He is a two-time All-Lone Star Conference selection and has seven sacks and 112 tackles in his two seasons with the RiverHawks. He has been torturing offensive linemen and coaches in the conference for the past two seasons.
“I always talk to the o-lineman before the first play and tell him he’s going to have a long day,” said Raymond. “Then I make sure I do my assignment.”

Knox was the biggest hit of organized team activities. He can absolutely fly down the field, and to everyone's delight -- and perhaps surprise -- caught almost everything thrown his way. Still, it's always wise to be cautious when it comes to rookie receivers. Knox played at a very small college -- Abilene Christian -- and might still have issues adjusting to life at the next level. But right now, Knox has a decent chance of contributing in 2009. What else do you want from a first-year player?
MSU's Brown making move to the indoors
AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Augusta Colts announced the signing of former Midwestern State standout Frank Brown on Tuesday.
Brown earned first-team All-Lone Star Conference South Division honors during his senior season when he helped the Mustangs to an 8-3 record with 26 tackles, three sacks and three interceptions in 2007.

KINGSVILLE - Two years after the initial recruiting pitch, the Javelinas have signed former West Oso basketball star Novella Thomas.
Thomas averaged just under 21 points a game her senior season in 2008, leading the Lady Bears to the state semifinals and a 34-1 record. She ended up signing a volleyball scholarship with Tarleton State, but never played for the Texanns.
She'll have to sit out the upcoming season and will be eligible to play the 2010-11 campaign and have a full four years of eligibility.
Astros honor state champion Panthers
HOUSTON — Celebrations have been a constant for the Danbury Panthers baseball team this summer since the squad won the Class 2A state championship.
With parades through Danbury on firetrucks, autograph parties at players’ houses, proclamation letters from the Commissioners Court in Angleton and an appearance on Foxsports Channel 55, the Panthers have made the rounds.
But Tuesday night’s appearance at Minute Maid Park was pretty “crazy.”
“Man this is a crazy experience. Something you experience once in a lifetime,” Danbury’s Scott Zimmerle said. “It is definitely something that you cannot describe. One of those things where you just lose your mind on.
“Just to hear your name announced by the Astros’ announcer and see your face on the Jumbotron is crazy,” he said.
Zimmerle, the Class 2A most valuable player, was 17-0 on the season for the Panthers and slugged away at the plate for a .491. average. He will next suit up for the Javelinas at Texas A&M Kingsville next.

Football: LSC to play in Kanza Bowl starting in 2009
The Lone Star Conference has agreed to annually send a representative to the Kanza Bowl, a newly formed postseason football game to be played at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, Kan. The decision was announced Monday morning at a press conference in the Kansas capitol city.
The Kanza (pronounced CANS-uh) Bowl, one of only four NCAA Division II bowl games, will be played the first Saturday in December each year, always featuring a match-up of teams from the LSC and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). Both the LSC and MIAA signed a one-year agreement with the bowl, with the option to renew the contract for up to two additional years.
"We're grateful for Rick Benke at Hummer Sports Park and the other folks in Topeka for identifying the Lone Star Conference as a worthy participant in this bowl game, and we look forward to some great competition against the MIAA teams," said Stan Wagnon, LSC commissioner. "Having the chance to participate in a postseason bowl game is something our coaches have desired for some time, and I think it's appropriate that we can do that in an agreement with the MIAA. Both conferences play football at the highest level in Division II, and both of us seem to always have a team or two that feels like they should have been included in the playoffs. This will give those teams an opportunity that wouldn't otherwise exist."

ADA – Former East Central University baseball standout Miguel Abreu is having an outstanding season at second base for the Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
Abreu’s season is so solid that he was selected to play in the Eastern League All-Star Game on Wednesday night in Trenton, N.J., where he was named the Most Valuable Player. He went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored as the South All-Stars beat the North All-Stars, 5-3. Abreu was the only South player to have multiple hits as the South edged the North, 10-9, in that category. He also excelled defensively on a couple of plays, including a diving stop to prevent a run.
Heading into a weekend series at Akron, Abreu was batting an even .300 to lead the team with 22 doubles, 21 stolen bases and 29 runs batted in. He has also homered four times.
In the first half of the Eastern League season, he collected 31 multi-hit games and had one stretch of five consecutive multi-hit efforts from April 26-May 1. Included in that was a five-hit game against Erie on April 29.
Abreu has also proven to be deadly against left-handed pitching as he boasts a .348 batting average so far this season.
He moved up to Bowie for the 2009 season after playing the 2008 campaign at Class A Frederick where he led the team in doubles (24) and was second in stolen bases (24). Abreu also finished the 2008 season, hitting .302 against southpaws while striking out only five times in 116 at bats. He also hit .305 before the all-star break of that season.
Abreu, a native of Salinas, Puerto Rico, played one season (2005) for ECU as an outfielder and earned All-Lone Star Conference North First Team honors as he batted .447 (second in the LSC) with 89 hits (also second in the league) and 143 total bases (second in the LSC).
He led the team in homers (11), RBIs (42), doubles (15), runs scored (60) and stolen bases (20). He also topped the Tigers in on-base percentage (.479) and slugging percentage (.719).
Following the 2005 season, Abreu was drafted in the 28th round (843rd pick overall) by the Orioles.9
Reunion for Teaff's Rams
Former Angelo State football players that played for Grant Teaff are invited back to campus this fall to celebrate the success Rams teams under the legendary coach.
A reunion for members of the 1969, 1970 and 1971 ASU football teams will take place Aug. 28-29, 2009. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the LeGrand Center with a meet and greet of former players with dinner set for 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Aug. 29, a breakfast is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in the VIP Lounge of the Junell Center followed by a campus tour for all attendees. Later in the day, there will be reception at the house of President Joseph C. Rallo which will be followed by Ram Jam and ASU's season-opening game against Texas A&M-Commerce at 6 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium.

Lancers' Football Places 7 At Next Level
After posting a 7-4 season and a victory at the Tremblay Financial Services Bowl in 2008, the Pasadena City College football team has placed seven players at four-year universities, according to Acting Head Coach James Kuk. PCC had a primarily freshmen team in '08 with just 13 sophomores on the roster.
Wide receiver Owen Dixon committed to Valdosta State University in Georgia (NCAA Division II), a member of the Gulf South Conference. Dixon was PCC's leading receiver with 54 receptions for 828 yards and one of just two Lancers to be named All-National Northern Conference First Team.
Dixon, a 6-1, 195-pounder from Miami Killian High, Florida, is third on PCC's all-time receivers list with 89 catches for 1,277 yards over two seasons. He is one of only five Lancer players to ever record 50 catches in a season.
Running back Joshua Morgan accepted a scholarship at Abilene Christian University, Texas (Division II), a member of the Lone Star Conference. Morgan became just the 12th back in PCC history to rush for a 1,000 yards in a season. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound rusher from Encino's Crespi High is 18th on the Lancers' all-time rushing list (1,215 yards), right behind the college's most famous alumnus Jackie Robinson (17th, 1,251 yards, 1937-38).
Morgan was an All-NNC Second Team selection and led the Lancers in all-purpose yards in '08 with 1,347.
Anthony Armstrong hoping to be the jewel of the Dolphins
MIAMI -- Players with Arena Football League roots have made NFL rosters. Players make NFL rosters off practice squads every year. But you don't find too many players making NFL rosters a few years after being on an Arena Football League practice squad - while selling jewelry.
That's the deep route that slight, swift wide receiver Anthony Armstrong is running toward a Dolphins roster spot.
Although there's only so much stock you can put in minicamp - touch football with helmets - Armstrong counted as one of the surprises by streaking behind coverage on deep routes and running better routes in the medium and short zones. Last year's practice-squad member commanded notice running drills alongside last year's receivers plus 2009 draftees Patrick Turner and Brian Hartline. Still, wideout is one of the most competitive positions on the team.
"I can say that every day Anthony Armstrong has done something like that right now," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said during minicamp last month a few hours after Armstrong beat Eric Green for a big play. "To the point that I see these quarterbacks are trying to find him in matchups. Now what I can take from that: Until I see it in a game, I am still at 50 percent that way with the evaluation part of it."
Coaching the fundamentals
YOAKUM - Kaitlin McCool loves to help younger softball players because she sees a lot of herself in them as she watches them learn.
"I remember going to high school and then college camps, and you meet older girls that you look up to," she said. "I always thought 'I want to be like them.' Now, I'm hoping that I'm doing that for these girls and teaching them to love the sport as much as I do."
McCool, who graduated from Woodsboro and will play at Texas A&M-Kingsville next season, was one of the student coaches at the Texas Trouble Softball Clinic in Yoakum on Thursday. Her team, Texas Trouble, are the American Softball Associate 18U "A" state champions and are running the clinic to raise money for a trip to the national championship tournament from July 26 to August 2 in Las Vegas. There have already been clinics in Woodsboro and Hallettsville, and there will be a final clinic on July 23 in Victoria.
Hidalgo Coach, Player Lead South All-Star Team To Victory
Hidalgo girls basketball coach Monica Rodriguez capped off a very good year Thursday night in Austin, as she coached the Sub-4A South girls All-Star team to a 57-49 win over the North at St. Edward's University. Three months ago, Rodriguez and the Lady Pirates made another trip to the state capital, that time as one of the final four 3A hoops teams in the state.
As she did back then, the Hidalgo coach once again received solid support from one of her finest players, as all-stater and soon-to-be-Javelina Victoria Gonzalez scored 12 points in the win.
Coaches select Cole Hicks to play in state all-star bash
Cole Hicks, former Bandera High School All State wide receiver, will play in the 75th annual Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game.
The most prestigious game for high school gridironers in the Lone Star State takes place Tuesday, July 21, at DKR Memorial Stadium, home of the Texas Longhorns. Kick-off is set for 7:30 pm. High school football coaches selected all participating players, who will report to Austin on Friday, July 17.
For the next three days, the players will attend rigorous two-a-day practices in preparation for the game. The practices, which are open to the public, will also be held at Memorial Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) funds transportation and room and board for the players. They will also receive an engraved wristwatch to commemorate their achievement. “It’s a fun time for athletes, coaches, parents and fans of the game with memories they will treasure for a lifetime,” said a THSCA spokesman.
In the past, the Coaches All-Star Game has featured National Football League greats such as Earl Campbell, Don Meredith, Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson. The All-Star football game began in 1935.
Meanwhile, Hicks has signed to play with West Texas A&M and will report to practice on August 4. Located in the town of Canyon, West Texas A&M is located about 15 miles south of Amarillo.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - First-year Southwestern Oklahoma State University men's basketball coach Charlie Schaef has announced the signing of eight players to National Letters of Intent and committing themselves to play for the Bulldogs during the 2009-10 season.
"We are extremely proud of this class," Schaef said. "Coach (Wayne) Anderson and I hit the ground running in April. We think we have a fantastic group of young men that SWOSU can get excited about supporting."
Schaef and Anderson had extensive work heading into their first season together as the top seven scorers from last year's Lone Star Conference Tournament runner-up team have graduated.
"We were able to cover our needs across the board," Schaef said "Most importantly, we wanted great student-athletes on the court and in the classroom. These young men will be fun to watch and will be tremendous examples for kids in the Weatherford community."

That's the deep route that slight, swift wide receiver Anthony Armstrong is running toward a Dolphins roster spot.
Although there's only so much stock you can put in minicamp - touch football with helmets - Armstrong counted as one of the surprises by streaking behind coverage on deep routes and running better routes in the medium and short zones. Last year's practice-squad member commanded notice running drills alongside last year's receivers plus 2009 draftees Patrick Turner and Brian Hartline. Still, wideout is one of the most competitive positions on the team.
"I can say that every day Anthony Armstrong has done something like that right now," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said during minicamp last month a few hours after Armstrong beat Eric Green for a big play. "To the point that I see these quarterbacks are trying to find him in matchups. Now what I can take from that: Until I see it in a game, I am still at 50 percent that way with the evaluation part of it."
Coaching the fundamentals
YOAKUM - Kaitlin McCool loves to help younger softball players because she sees a lot of herself in them as she watches them learn.
"I remember going to high school and then college camps, and you meet older girls that you look up to," she said. "I always thought 'I want to be like them.' Now, I'm hoping that I'm doing that for these girls and teaching them to love the sport as much as I do."
McCool, who graduated from Woodsboro and will play at Texas A&M-Kingsville next season, was one of the student coaches at the Texas Trouble Softball Clinic in Yoakum on Thursday. Her team, Texas Trouble, are the American Softball Associate 18U "A" state champions and are running the clinic to raise money for a trip to the national championship tournament from July 26 to August 2 in Las Vegas. There have already been clinics in Woodsboro and Hallettsville, and there will be a final clinic on July 23 in Victoria.
Hidalgo Coach, Player Lead South All-Star Team To Victory
Hidalgo girls basketball coach Monica Rodriguez capped off a very good year Thursday night in Austin, as she coached the Sub-4A South girls All-Star team to a 57-49 win over the North at St. Edward's University. Three months ago, Rodriguez and the Lady Pirates made another trip to the state capital, that time as one of the final four 3A hoops teams in the state.
As she did back then, the Hidalgo coach once again received solid support from one of her finest players, as all-stater and soon-to-be-Javelina Victoria Gonzalez scored 12 points in the win.
Coaches select Cole Hicks to play in state all-star bash
Cole Hicks, former Bandera High School All State wide receiver, will play in the 75th annual Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game.
The most prestigious game for high school gridironers in the Lone Star State takes place Tuesday, July 21, at DKR Memorial Stadium, home of the Texas Longhorns. Kick-off is set for 7:30 pm. High school football coaches selected all participating players, who will report to Austin on Friday, July 17.
For the next three days, the players will attend rigorous two-a-day practices in preparation for the game. The practices, which are open to the public, will also be held at Memorial Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) funds transportation and room and board for the players. They will also receive an engraved wristwatch to commemorate their achievement. “It’s a fun time for athletes, coaches, parents and fans of the game with memories they will treasure for a lifetime,” said a THSCA spokesman.
In the past, the Coaches All-Star Game has featured National Football League greats such as Earl Campbell, Don Meredith, Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson. The All-Star football game began in 1935.
Meanwhile, Hicks has signed to play with West Texas A&M and will report to practice on August 4. Located in the town of Canyon, West Texas A&M is located about 15 miles south of Amarillo.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - First-year Southwestern Oklahoma State University men's basketball coach Charlie Schaef has announced the signing of eight players to National Letters of Intent and committing themselves to play for the Bulldogs during the 2009-10 season.
"We are extremely proud of this class," Schaef said. "Coach (Wayne) Anderson and I hit the ground running in April. We think we have a fantastic group of young men that SWOSU can get excited about supporting."
Schaef and Anderson had extensive work heading into their first season together as the top seven scorers from last year's Lone Star Conference Tournament runner-up team have graduated.
"We were able to cover our needs across the board," Schaef said "Most importantly, we wanted great student-athletes on the court and in the classroom. These young men will be fun to watch and will be tremendous examples for kids in the Weatherford community."

EDINBURG — The University of Texas-Pan American has narrowed the search for its next women’s basketball coach to three finalists.
Through information requested under the Freedom of Information Act, The Monitor has learned that Stephen F. Austin assistant Taqueta Braxton, Division II University of West Georgia women’s coach John Craig Roden and Division II Texas A&M-Commerce coach Denny Downing were invited for on-campus interviews this week.
Downing has spent the last seven years as head coach of Commerce and this past season one of his players — Britney Jordan — was drafted by the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.
“For me it’s a move up,” Downing said about the possibility of being UTPA’s next coach. “I’m going form Division II to Division I. Them being in a league really makes it attractive to me. It really changes things up when you are in a league. It really gives a reason to play and is a tremendous boost to recruiting.”

As he neared graduation at Texas Tech last year, Caesar Martinez found himself in a quandary. Majoring in exercise and sports science, Martinez couldn’t decide whether he wanted to coach a sport or be a strength-and-conditioning coach.
Looking back now, Martinez said, it wasn’t a tough decision.
“I like to work out, so I thought I would like training athletes and helping them get stronger, bigger and faster,” he said. “So I decided to become a strength-and-conditioning coach.”
Martinez, who made the Tech football team as a junior walk-on in 2004, was a student assistant under Tech strength-and-conditioning coach Bennie Wylie for nearly three years before getting hired by Incarnate Word football coach Mike Santiago last summer.

CANYON, Texas - The 2008-09 West Texas A&M Women's Basketball team has been recognized with 2008-09 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll status, as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). This award, given in NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and Junior College/Community College, awards teams throughout the nation that carry the highest grade-point averages for the entire season, based on the nomination submitted by the WBCA-member head coaches.
"It is always an honor for the WBCA to recognize these teams for putting together outstanding cumulative grade point averages," WBCA CEA Beth Bass said. "We want to congratulate each and every one of these teams for their efforts in the classroom and want them to know that we celebrate their hard work. My thanks go out to the teams for setting a benchmark of success academically among their peers in the sport."
The Lady Buffs compiled a team grade point average of 3.371 to earn the 24th spot on the prestigious list.
"Being recognized in the academic top 25 is always an honor, but this year particularly is extra sweet," said head coach Krista Gerlich. "Advancing to the Elite Eight means missing a great amount of class while enduring the time constraints of preparation and the stress that comes along with competing at a high level. With that being said, for our girls to still maintain a 3.371 is an extraordinary achievement."
The grade point averages were calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's roster in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams making the list of Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll must obtain at least a 3.000 overall GPA.

STEPHENVILLE - Tarleton head baseball coach Bryan Conger has announced the signing of Keith Stockton to a national letter-of-intent to play with the Texans next season.
“We are truly excited to get Kenneth committed to our program for this upcoming year," Conger said. "We feel like he was going to be one of the better pitching prospects in the region next year, so to get him committed before his sophomore year is something we are very pleased with. Kenneth is a big, strong young man who is very athletic and he just goes out and attacks the strike zone. He has a very bright future.”
Stockton, a 6-2 right-handed pitcher, transfers to Tarleton from Cisco Junior College where he went 6-1 with a 4.35 earned run average this past spring. He attended Pflugerville High School where he lettered in both baseball and football. Stockton was a starter for the Panthers and helped lead his team to a trip to the 2007 class 5-A state championship game. He was named to the 14-5A All-District Second Team as a senior in 2008.
Stockton will join the Texans in August to participate in the fall baseball program.

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton head softball coach Julie Mata has announced the hiring of former TexAnn Leslee Ortiz as the program’s assistant softball coach.
Ortiz, who lettered for the TexAnns in 1998-99, comes to the TexAnns after serving as a head coach for the last seven seasons at Bruceville-Eddy. She was the head coach at China Spring for one year prior to her stint at BEHS.
“Coming back to Tarleton is something I have always wanted to do,” Ortiz, who played for the TexAnns prior to getting married as Leslee Drummond, said. “To have the opportunity to play for Coach Mata was wonderful, but to get to come back and coach under her is very exciting. I am glad to be back at Tarleton.”
Ortiz was a Second Team All-Lone Star Conference catcher in 1998 before being selected as an honorable mention catcher for the TexAnns her senior season. She was on Tarleton’s first and second South Division Championship teams, and she helped the TexAnns to back-to-back LSC Postseason Tournament appearances.
In her two seasons with the program, Ortiz helped the squad to a combined 61-30-2 overall record and a 22-10 South Division record. She played in 40 games as a junior, starting 38. As a senior, Ortiz started 35 of 38 games played from behind the plate. A graduate of Groesbeck High School, Ortiz was a first team all-district selection in high school.
“We are so fortunate to have Leslee Ortiz joining us as our new assistant coach,” Mata said. “She brings a great deal of experience to the position, having been a high school head coach for eight years and having played softball collegiately. She was an outstanding catcher for us here at Tarleton and our battery is going to benefit greatly with her knowledge and coaching expertise in their area in particular.
Mata also believes the new assistant coach will help the team in recruiting.
“Leslee is well-connected for recruiting and has a great eye for talent, having been such a successful college player herself,” Mata said. “She is smart, has a great work ethic and loves softball. We couldn't ask for better!”

We are hearing that another Big 12 running back might be heading to the LSC. Jocques Crawford is rumored to be in Abilene and interested in transferring. Crawford was a highly recruited high school player out of Cordova, TN and originally signed with Texas Tech.
He spent two seasons at Cisco Junior College, rushing for yards 3,004 yds with 27 TDs and garnered All American honors in 2007. He signed with Kansas and was the third leading rusher for the team last fall.
He was suspended from the Jayhawks this past spring. “It was a situation where he has breached team policy more than once in a relatively short period of time,” Mangino said of Crawford. “I am taking a look at his situation and he will not participate the rest of the spring. I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know his status, whether he’ll be back or not.”

Abilene Christian University receiver Chance McCoy spent the first three days of this month in Lake Forest IL at Chicago Bears’ linebacker Brian Urlacher’s youth camp. One of the things he told writers there what his brother, University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, thought about the Wildcats’ star receiver Johnny Knox, who was drafted and signed by the Bears last spring.
Colt saw the Wildcats play one game last fall and Chance said he compared Knox favorably to Longhorn receivers Jordan Shipley and Quan Cosby. He told Chance that Knox was the same type of guy, just at a smaller school. Colt thinks Knox can play in the NFL.
WOODSBORO - Woodsboro's Kaitlin McCool is headed to A&M-Kingsville to play softball next year, but not before representing the Eagles one more time.
She'll play in the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star game Tuesday in Austin. She's the only single-A player from South Texas to get an invite.

She was chosen for the All-State Honorable Mention team for the Texas Sports Writers Association in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 season. The Texas Girls Coaches Association voted Kaitlin as first team all-state catcher in 2007-2008 season. (Link)

Five selected for LSC Degree Completion Scholarships
Five Lone Star Conference student-athletes were selected to receive an award from the LSC Degree Completion Scholarship program for 2009-10.
Cameron's Renee Breeze, Tarleton State's Nicole Cone, Texas Woman's Ashley Martin, Midwestern State's Allison Schreiber and East Central's Kacey Thomas are the initial scholarship recipients.
The purpose of the LSC Degree Completion Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance for completion of a first baccalaureate degree to deserving student-athletes in the conference. In the first year of the program, the league is providing more than $11,000, which is funded with assistance from the NCAA Conference Grant program.
"The Lone Star Conference has long recognized the excellence of our teams and individuals in athletic competitions, but implementing this degree-completion program shows our student-athletes that we are equally committed to success in the classroom," said Stan Wagnon, LSC commissioner. "The recipients in this inaugural class are most deserving, and I'm confident they will provide a solid foundation upon which this program will grow for years to come."
Breeze, a former women's golfer at CU, is completing her degree in education. She was a four-time all-conference selection with two second team and two honorable mention nods. Breeze was also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America and LSC all-academic team pick.
Cone, who just exhausted her eligibility with Tarleton's softball team, is on track for a degree in nursing. She was an All-LSC first teamer in 2007 and an all-academic selection in 2007 and 2008.
Martin, a former women's softball player at TWU, is finishing her marketing degree. She started her career as a pitcher and led the team with 101 strikeouts in 2006, before moving to first base as a junior.
Schreiber, who finished her four-year career with MSU's volleyball team, is completing her degree in kinesiology. She became the eighth player in conference history to achieve 5,000 career assists, ending her stellar career with a school record 5,741 assists. Schreiber was a four-time All-LSC pick, including Setter of the Year honors in 2007, and was named Setter of the Week 15 times in her career. She was also an All-Academic team selection in 2008.
Thomas, who completed her senior year of eligibility with ECU's women's basketball program, is pursuing a degree in biology. She was All-LSC North honorable mention on the court after leading ECU in scoring (14.2 points per game) and rebounding (7.8) and was also named to the LSC North All-Academic team in 2009.
