2009 Recap
Everyone knew the early schedule for the Buffaloes was going to be brutal with 4 ranked teams (including three in the top 10) in the first six weeks. But no one expected WT to emerge with a 1-5 record and out of the playoff race midway through the season. At that point, no one expected the Buffs to turn around their season winning their last 5 regular season games outscoring their opponents by a 224-116 margin. While the team did not qualify for the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2004, they were chosen to represent the LSC in the inaugural Kanza Bowl, where they defeated MIAA represenative Nebraska-Omaha 31-25.
The biggest difference in the team in the first half of the season and the latter half was the offense. Over the first six games, the offense averaged 21 points and 376 yards. Those numbers improved to 42.5 points and 493 yards. There were several factors contributing to the struggles early on. A new starting quarterback and several new receivers played a role, but the biggest factor was a preseason injury to running back Keithon Flemming that sidelined him over that period. He returned to average 80 yards per game rushing and 54 yards receiving, scoring an impressive 16 TDs in just 6 games.
For the season, WT was an uncharacteristic 4th in the LSC in scoring (31.8 pts per game) and 2nd in yards gained (434.8 per game). The defense allowed 25.6 points per game (5th) and 353.4 yards (4th).
2010 Outlook
Out with the old
To say Keithon Flemming will be missed is a gross understatement. In his three years at WT, Flemming rushed for more than 2,400 yards with 37 TDs and also caught 150 passes for another 1,300 yards and 10 TDs. Despite missing quite a bit of playing time due to injuries, he was twice named 1st LSC South, and once to the second team. Up front J'Marcus Webb (now with the Chicago Bears) was also a two time 1st LSC South selection, and Jon Ioane was a second team selection last year. The defensive line will be missing two-time LSC defensive lineman of the year Eugene Sims (now with the St. Louis Rams) and two-time 1st LSC South Broderick Marshall as well as starter Marcus Rowe. Mark Ford and Joseph Peterson started a combined 8 games at linebacker last fall, and had 53 tackles between them. James Chandler (2nd LSC South) was a perfect 42-42 on PATs and hit 14 of 21 FGs.

Taylor Harris (HM LSC South) returns for his senior season. He threw for 3,735 yards and 22 TDs last fall. He will have his top three targets from last year as well - Tyson Williams (66-847, 5 TDs), Stephen Burton (62-888, 2 TDs) and Brittan Golden (46-946, 10 TDs) Also back is leading rusher Kelvin Thompson (529 yards and 6 TDs). The line also returns several experienced players - starters Isaiah Lewis, Shaun Wesley and Michael Zoch as well as Daniel Sherwood, Hector Rodriguez (both starters in 2008) and Aaron Mullane.
Bryan Braman leads the defensive returnees. Braman (1st LSC South) had 16 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Aaron Wampler also returns on the line after racking up 6.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss in a reserve role. Due to a number of injuries last year, there are quite a few experienced players returning at linebacker. Anthony Scott (HM LSC South) led the team with 106 tackles. Also back are Drew Graham, Shad Baichtal, Kyle Voss and Kevin McCluskey, who had a combined 147 tackles with 11.5 for loss and 3 interceptions. The secondary returns the most experience with starters Curtis Jefferson (1st LSC South), Tae Evans (1st LSC South), Jordan Smith (HM LSC South) and Caleb Randolph topping the list. The quartet combined for 288 tackles, 10.5 for loss, 11 interceptions and 23 passes broken up.
Tim Cowdrey returns as the team's punter. He averaged 36.4 yards per punt last season. Jeremy Watson was the leading return man for both punts (7.8 average) and kickoffs (24.9 average).
In with the new
Running back Tommy Hampton garnered All-American honors last season at Los Medanos after rushing for 1,708 yards and 16 TDs last year (2,400 yds and 24 TDs in two seasons). Can you ever have enough receivers in the WT offense? Junior college transfers Ray Magee (originally signed with Utah out of JC) and Myron Dillard will provide even more depth. The Buffs also brought in several transfers for the offensive line. David Grant was an NJCAA All-American at Navarro JC (Nebraska commit out of HS), Shawn Johnson (UCLA commit in 2009) was an All-Region honoree at College of the Canyons, Justin Brown (UCLA commit out of HS) played at Saddleback CC, and James Otero comes to WT from Delta State.
Defensively, the Buffaloes brought in several transfers for the defensive line. The prize recruit is Simi Kuli from El Camino College who signed with Oregon State after the 2007 season. Rivals had Kuli ranked as their #1 JC recruit, while Scout had him as their #8. Other transfers of note - Navarro's Justin Williams (Kansas State commit in December), Drew Jones from Blinn (signed with Houston out of HS), Jonathan Hatton from Tyler JC and Dishon Robertson from Hinds CC in Mississippi. Linebacker D. J. Ross from Blinn will add depth to the linebacking corps.

Best Case Scenario
10-1 After a very tough season opener, the Buffs schedule is much more manageable the next four weeks, allowing them to gel as a team. If they can get good production from the running game, the offense should be back to its expected spot as one of the best in the nation. The defense should be improved, with experience in the secondary, and a potentially super defensive line. The depth appears to be better than last year as well, which should help them get through the tough LSC South.
Worst Case Scenario
6-5 Just like all the other contenders, their is little margin for error. If the running game does not gel, it could be a repeat of last year, with several close games not going in WT's favor. Also, while several of the recruits look to be major contributors, it is not easy to replace to NFL draft picks or Keithon Flemming. We realize that a 6-5 record is unlikely, but we would have said the same thing last year (even more strongly).

2010 Preview - Texas A&M-Commerce
2009 Recap
At first glance, TAMC's 5-5 record from last season looks very pedestrian. However, upon closer inspection, it's easy to see the Lions could have very easily had a shockingly good season. The first 3 games of the season were losses before committing to Adam Farkes at QB. After that, the Lions went 5-2. One of their losses was against a Division 1 FCS school (Southeastern Louisiana). They had an overtime loss to Abilene Christian, who at that time was ranked #2 in the nation. They also had a 1 point loss to #7 Texas A&M-Kingsville, a game in which the Lions had a 13 point lead with only 7 mins to play. A couple of breaks here or there, and TAMC has a D2 record with only 2 losses, and wins over 2 Top 10 teams. DL Willie Green had an incredible season in which he was named All-American, and Head Coach Guy Morriss won LSC North Coach of the Year in his first season in Commerce. OT RJ Brisbon also won LSC North OL of the Year, along with LB Cory Whitfield's Linebacker of the Year accolades.
2010 Outlook
Out with the old
OT RJ Brisbon (1st LSC North, Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year) was the anchor of the Lions offensive line, and will be sorely missed. But the biggest loss is DT William Green (1st LSC North, Defensive Lineman of the Year, D2football.com All-American, 44 tackles, 18.5 TFL, 9 sacks). Long time defensive leader S Alex Contreras (1st LSC North, 41 tackles, 2.5 TFL) is also gone. TE Reid Herchenbach (19 catches, 176 yds, 1 TD) had one of the stranger seasons in the LSC. After starting 3 games at Quarterback, he moved to Tight End and ended up voted Honorable Mention LSC North as a Tight End. After a season ending knee injury, RB Jetavious Best will not return this season.

RB Marcus Graham (1st LSC North, 924 total yds, 7 TD's) dominated down the stretch last season once he and the offensive line learned the new Lions' offense. If QB Adam Farkes (HM LSC North, 1,953 passing yds, 12 TD's) can take care of the ball better this season, he could turn into one of the better QB's in the LSC. G David Sudderth (1st LSC North, pre-season All-American) will be the anchor of this year's offensive line, but is joined by returners Connor Wise, John Marshall and Brady Autry. LB Cory Whitfield (1st LSC North, Linebacker of the Year, pre-season All-American, 111 tackles, 13.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 INT, 2 Defensive TD's) had an incredible season and will be the anchor of the new 3-4 linebacker corps in Commerce, along with Stephen Degrate (HM LSC North, 58 tackles, 1 INT, 1 Defensive TD). CB Israel Hughes (1st LSC North, 43 tackles, 2 INT) is back as well. Freshman kicker Ahmed Abo-Mahmood (1st LSC North) had an incredible 2009 season, hitting 7 of 9 FG's, and 29-29 XP.

Probably the most well-known transfer in the LSC this season is QB JJ Harp going to TAMC from Eastern New Mexico. Harp was a Harlon Hill finalist in 2009, after setting D2 records in Total Offense and averaged 437 passing yards per game. WR Damian Davis appears to be one of the bigger offensive threats in recent memory for TAMC, after transferring from Oklahoma State where he was the #2 WR behind Dez Bryant in 2008. C Veliani Kautai transfers from Kilgore JC, and CB Marlin Terrell appears to be threatening to take over after transferring in from Temple.

September 11 vs Angelo State - If Commerce wants to make the next step forward as a program, these are the types of games they have to win. A Cotton Bowl win against the Rams could launch the Lions into playoff contention.
September 25 @ Eastern New Mexico - If the Lions want to go undefeated in the North, this might be the toughest challenge. The Greyhounds in Portales present a tough game early on in the season for TAMC.
October 2 vs Southeastern Oklahoma - Last season's game against the Storm was a nail biter, but the Lions prevailed and clinched the LSC North. With bigger goals in sight this season, this is a must win.
Best Case Scenario - 9-2
This scenario involves the Lions going undefeated in the North again, which is definitely possible. As long as they can win only one of the games against Tarleton, TAMK or Angelo State, they're at 9 wins. They play Tarleton at home, Angelo State in the Cotton Bowl, and TAMK in Kingsville. Tarleton and TAMK are upset possibilities, but would be tough to pull off. Don't overlook the Lions in the North. While the South teams may be better squads, the Lions definitely have an easier schedule to contend with and won't take the pounding the South teams will.
Worst Case Scenario - 5-6
This would be a very disappointing season for the Lions. The only way this happens is if QB Adam Farkes continues to have turnover problems or is injured, and the young Lion defense doesn't come together. The Lions are thin at QB depth, and if something happened to Farkes, things could get ugly quick. The way TAMC's schedule sets up, this would be hard to imagine, but still possible.

2010 Preview - Abilene Christian
2009 Recap
The season got off to a bang, with the #5 Wildcats defeating #2 NWMSU for the second straight season opener. The next six weeks would see ACU cruise, winning the six games by an average of 39-15. The toughest game in that stretch was a 20-14 overtime victory over Texas A&M Commerce, in which Drew Cuffee picked off TAMC's Adam Farkes, and ran the ball back 85 yards for the winning TD. So through 7 games, the Wildcats were undefeated and found themselves ranked #1, for the first time since joining the NCAA.
That all came to an end, as the rejuvenated West Texas A&M Buffaloes came into Abilene and rallied from a 14-12 deficit to defeat ACU 32-21. ACU would stumble twice more in the final weeks of the regular season, dropping hard fought battles to Tarleton State and Midwestern State. Nonetheless, the Wildcats received an invitation to the NCAA playoffs, getting a rematch with Midwestern State. This time, ACU capitalized on their opportunities, returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and converting two MSU turnovers into 10 more points. Next up was Northwest Missouri in another rematch. Once again the regular season result was reversed, with the Bearcats dominating ACU 35-10.
For the season, ACU averaged 28.9 points per game (7th in the LSC) and 370.7 yards (9th). The defense fared much better, allowing just 19.7 points (2nd) and 291.4 yards (1st) in the conference.

QB Zach Stewart has recently informed the ACU coaches that he wouldn't be returning for his final two years at ACU. Stewart started two games as a freshman in 2008, and was the starting early in 2009, throwing for 728 yards, with 5 TDs and 4 Ints. Dennis Campbell was second on the team with 30 receptions. The offensive line will be missing All-American Tony Washington (1st LSC South) as well as Levi Wolfe (HM LSC South) and blocking TE Trey Simeone (2nd LSC South). While most of the defense returns, the secondary was hard hit - Tony Harp (1st LSC South), Major Culbert (HM LSC South), DuMaurier Jordan and Josh Wise combined for 184 tackles, 6 Ints, and 17 passes broken up.

Mitchell Gale emerged as the starting QB late in the season. He threw for 1,709 yards, with 10 TDs and 7 Ints. Backup Clark Harrell also returns. The speedy Edmund Gates (1st LSC South) was the leading receiver, catching 49 passes for 702 yards and 5 TDs. He will be joined by Kendrick Johnson (1st LSC South special teams) and Chris Fowler. The strength of the offense was the running game, with Darryl Richardson (961 yards and 16 TDs) and Reggie Brown (955 yards and 7 TDs) sharing the load. It was only fitting that both were name to the LSC South second team. Clearing the way will be returning starters Royland Tubbs (1st LSC South), Matt Webber (2nd LSC South) and Trevis Turner (HM LSC South) and backup Neal Tivis.

Up front, Aston Whiteside (9.5 sacks, 15.5 TFL, 1st LSC South) and Fred Thompson (8.5 sacks, 16 TFL, 2nd LSC South) camped out in opposing backfields. Not to be overlooked, Marvin Jones also made 1st LSC South. Bryson Lewis, Austin January, and Mke Jones also saw significant playing time. If opponents got by them, Kevin Washington (1st LSC South), Courtney Lane (1st LSC South), and Eric Edwards were there to make the plays. The linebacking trio combined for 177 tackles, with 28.5 for losses. Casey Carr and Derek Odelusi also provide experience in backup roles. Drew Cuffee (HM LSC South), Richard Havins, and Nathan Baggs are the most experienced returning in the secondary.

The Wildcats looked to fill their offensive line holes with a couple of transfers - Richard Cagle (Vanderbilt) and Dyland Blount (Kilgore JC). Josh Morgan gained over 1,600 total yards while at Pasadena College, and looks to help out of the backfield. In the secondary, Kamaron Riely (a Georgia Tech signee), Darrian Williams (North Texas) and David Lamour (Chaffey College) should be major contributors.

Best Case Scenario
11-0 ACU returns six players on defense that received LSC honors last year, including four first teamers. The offense returns its biggest weapons and most of the line. If they can get more consistent play from the quarterback position, an unbeaten run through the regular season is possible.
Worst Case Scenario
6-5 An unbeaten run may be possible, but it is not likely with this tough schedule - road games at Washburn, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M, while hosting Tarleton State, Midwestern State and Angelo State. The linebacking trio combined for 177 tackles, with 28.5 for losses. Casey Carr and Derek Odelusi also provide experience in backup roles. Drew Cuffee (HM LSC South), Richard Havins, and Nathan Baggs are the most experienced returning in the secondary.

The Wildcats looked to fill their offensive line holes with a couple of transfers - Richard Cagle (Vanderbilt) and Dyland Blount (Kilgore JC). Josh Morgan gained over 1,600 total yards while at Pasadena College, and looks to help out of the backfield. In the secondary, Kamaron Riely (a Georgia Tech signee), Darrian Williams (North Texas) and David Lamour (Chaffey College) should be major contributors.

11-0 ACU returns six players on defense that received LSC honors last year, including four first teamers. The offense returns its biggest weapons and most of the line. If they can get more consistent play from the quarterback position, an unbeaten run through the regular season is possible.
Worst Case Scenario
6-5 An unbeaten run may be possible, but it is not likely with this tough schedule - road games at Washburn, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M, while hosting Tarleton State, Midwestern State and Angelo State. If the newcomers in the secondary are not up to the task of facing top passing games week in and week out, and the offense becomes one dimensional, ACU will be hard pressed to repeat their success of the past few seasons.

2009 Preview - Abilene Christian
2008 Recap
The 2008 season could not have gotten off to a better start for Abilene Christian. The Wildcats marched into Maryville, Missouri and beat the #3 NMSU Bearcats 44-27, overcoming a 21-7 first quarter deficit. The teams would meet again in the second round of the playoffs, with ACU winning again, this time 93-68 (see the WT preview for more details). This would set up another rematch, this time with Northwest Missouri.
Both teams scored 4 times in the first half, but for NWMSU it was 4 TDs, while ACU had to settle for 2 FGs and trailed 28-20 at the half. In the second half ACU struck first, to pull within 1 at 28-27. NWMSU would score on their next three drives and their defenes would pick off two ACU passes to take the rematch 45-36.
Offensively, ACU was off the charts in 2008. The Wildcats set an LSC mark by scoring 52.3 points per game. They were also tops in the LSC in total offense (558.8 yds per game), had the #1 rusing offense (235.5 yds per game, 6.8 yds per carry) and the #2 passing offense (323.2 yds per game). Billy Malone led the LSC in passing efficiency (189.7) and threw for 3,213 yds and 36 TDs. His favorite target was once again Johnny Knox (56-1,069 13 TDs), but Edmund Gates , Jonathan Ferguson, and Bernard Scott all did their part as well. Scott topped the 2,000 yard rushing mark for the second time (2,156 yds and 28 TDs), just missing out on his record numbers from 2007. The skill players had the luxury of playing behind 3 first team and 2 second team All LSC South honorees.
Defensively, ACU finished second in the LSC in scoring defense (22.9) and fifth in yards allowed (339.9). (The numbers would have been 17.2 pts and 288 yds per game taking out WTAM, just to be fair like the WT preview). Aston Whiteside had a stellar RS freshman season, with 16 TFL and 9 sacks, while Fred Thompson had 14 TFL and 7.5 sacks from his LB spot. After an opening game scare at Mesa State (23-20), West Texas A&M kicked it into gear, winning their next 6 games by an average margin of 31, and with no team within 20 points. That set up a showdown between #4 WT and #3 ACU. The Wildcats jumped out to a 31-7 halftime lead and held off the Buffs 52-35. WT got to within 10 points twice, but ACU answered with TDs each time. WT quickly put that game behind them, winning their final three LSC games by a 137-9 margin, shutting out Angelo State and Tarleton State in the process. That set up a rematch with ACU. Conventional wisdom was for a high scoring blowout, but that doesn't come close to describing what happened on that November afternoon. The teams combined for 1,531 yards of offense and 161 points. West Texas A&M's were outstanding - 721 total yards, 595 yards passing, 7.7 yards per play and 63 points. ACU's were unbelievable - 810 yards, 14.5 yards per play, and 93 points. Not the way the Buffalo faithful wanted their season to end.
Offensively, it was more of the same for WT - a high scoring, passing-dominated offense. The Buffs finished second in the LSC in points scored (48.2 per game) and yards gained (544.5 per game). WT easily led the LSC in passing yardage, with Keith Null setting several LSC records enroute to 5,097 yds and 48 TDs passing. His top target was Charly Martin, another LSC record setter, who caught 95 passes for 1,867 yds and 22 TDs. Carl Johnson (73-925 9 TDs), Seth Hayden (66-832 6 TDs), and Anthony Clark (38-486 4 TDs) were also busy targets. The team only finished 6th in rushing yards (116.5 per game) but were third with a 4.2 per carry average. Keithon Flemming led the Buffs with 756 yards, despite missing a couple of games with injuries, and not being 100% for a good portion of the season.
Defensively, WT finished the season 9th in points allowed (26.4) and 7th in yards allowed (353.8). Those numbers are skewed by the two ACU games - take them out and WT only allowed 18 points per game and 282 yards. The run defense was 10th, allowing 128.7 yards per game (85.9 w/o ACU), and the pass defense was 4th, giving up 225.2 (196.2 w/o ACU). The team finished third in the LSC in sacks, 5th in red zone defense, 7th in Ints and 8th in third down conversions.

Best Case Scenario
10-1 The Buffs will need several things to fall into place: Taylor Harris to pick up where Keith Null and Dalton Bell left off, a full and speedy recovery by Keithon Flemming, solid play from the receivers, and overall improvement from the defense against the top teams. The talent is there for another LSC title, but WT will need some good fortune.
Worst Case Scenario
6-5 This is potentially the toughest regular season schedule of any D2 football team in the nation. Not only did WT lose some stellar athletes, they lost a ton of leadership. If Harris merely proves to be good instead of outstanding, if Flemming doesn't quickly rebound and the receivers are not up to recent standards, a burden falls on the defense. And that defense will be going up against some of the best offenses in the nation, so help might not be there.

2009 Preview - Tarleton State
2008 Recap
The Texans came out of the gate hot last year, opening the season 5-0 and ranked as high as #13. The offense was averaging 38.6 points (3rd in LSC) and 400 yards per game (4th in LSC). The defense was stifling, giving up just 12.8 points (2nd in LSC) and 225 yards per game (1st). They appeared to be primed to challenge for an LSC title and playoff spot. But that was all against the LSC North. Against the LSC South the numbers were more pedestrian: the Texans finished the LSC South 3-3, getting outscored by an average of 24-29, and outgained by 355-398 yard per game margin, capped by a season ending 51-0 blowout at West Texas A&M with a playoff spot still possible.
Overall, the offense finished fourth in the LSC in both scoring (30.5) and yardage (375.5) per game. The offense was the most balanced in the LSC, 187 yards per game and scoring 25 TDs rushing and passing for 188 yards per game. Scott Grantham threw for 1,993 yards, with 14 TDs and 11 Ints, completing 54% of his passes. Eric Foreman and Devin Guinn combined to catch 76 passes for 1,129 yds and 8 TDs. Roderick Smith led the rushing game with 1,024 yards and 13 TDs. The offensive line loses three starters, plus a two time second team All LSC South FB and their top WR.
Defensively, despite their late season struggles, the Texans led the LSC in points allowed (21.8) and were second in yards allowed (39.3). The pass defense was tops in the conference (197 yards per game), while the run defense was 9th (122 yards per game). Those stats didn't translate to individual honors - just 2 Texans were 1st team All LSC South, only1 named to the 2nd team and just 1 honorable mention. Tarleton will need to replace 5 starters from last year, with the secondary needing the most attention (3 starters lost).

Dave Campbell's Texas Football Coming Soon !!!
06/02/2009The "unofficial" beginning of the 2009 football season is near.
The 2009 summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football is set to hit newsstands starting June 15th. This upcoming edition marks the 50th anniversary of DCTF magazine, a summer-time staple in Texas that first published in 1960.
Throughout the 2009 DCTF, the magazine commemorates the previous 50 years with "flashbacks" remebering the past players, coaches and games. All of that will lead up to our special release: The 50th Anniversary Commemorative Edition, due on newsstands this fall.
But that will come soon enough. Until then, the 2009 summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football is available for pre-order by clicking here, or pick up a copy at your local book-seller or grocery store starting June 15th.
