Other LSC Football News

Ex-Viking John Randle more than talk

"He was the most explosive, emotional, full-effort guy I played against,"
said former Bears center Jerry Fontenot, now the Packers' assistant offensive line coach. "And he ran his mouth as hard as he played."

Fontenot said the best defensive tackles he played against in his 16-year
career were Jerry Ball, Chester McGlockton, Eric Swann and Randle—but only Randle played hard on every snap.

"He was one of the fun guys to play against," Fontenot said. "You knew
exactly what you were going to get from him on Sunday. He made me a much better
player because you knew if you didn't bring your 'A' game, he would find a way
to expose you."

Randle had to play with all-out effort and seek every edge possible because
at 6 feet 1 inch and 275 pounds, he was operating at a severe size disadvantage.
He was built like no other defensive tackle in the game, but he used his compact
frame to his advantage, getting underneath blockers' pads and often spinning and
squirming to free himself.

An undrafted free agent from Texas A & M-Kingsville, Randle willed
himself into one of the fiercest defensive players of his era. He played in
seven Pro Bowls and finished tied with Richard Dent for sixth on the all-time
sack list. He is eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the first time
this season and is one of 25 semifinalists.

Javelinas football recruiting focused on 'spots'

KINGSVILLE — For a football program that has endured some serious growing pains the past couple of seasons, one might think the needs for Texas A&M-Kingsville would be many when it comes to the recruiting process.

Coach Bo Atterberry and his staff have been traveling the high-school and junior-college paths since the Javelinas' 7-4 season came to a close earlier this month. And while coaches never will pass on landing someone they think could provide some help, A&M-Kingsville can afford to be a little choosy.

The reason: the Javs' cupboard simply isn't that bare.

Buffs' strength could be ground game

Graduation has raided Air Raid.

The starting quarterback, four starting receivers and two linemen are gone, putting West Texas A&M in its biggest offensive rebuilding mode under coach Don Carthel.

The Buffs have boasted the top passing offense in Division II and have been even more dangerous the past two seasons with a more effective running game.

Harris ready to pull trigger in WT's offense

Son, here are the keys to the car. It's a big responsibility. Have fun, but be careful.

Former West Texas A&M quarterback Matt McIntyre once called the Buffs offense "a finely tuned Cadillac." Opposing defenses may have thought it was a Hummer that ran over them each week of the season.

It doesn't matter to junior-to-be Taylor Harris what he's driving. As the heir apparent to the Buffs' Air Raid attack, he'll be in the driver's seat of Division II's No. 1 passing attack and No. 2 total offense.

"Some of the guys have come up to me and hit me in the ribs and said, 'You're the starter now.' It's my job to lose but I still have to earn it," Harris said.

ACU falls to NWMSU in regional championship game

There'll be no national title for Abilene Christian University this year.

Joel Osborn threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns, and LaRon Council ran for two more as No. 3 Northwest Missouri State knocked off the No. 2 Wildcats
45-36 in a Division II quarterfinal Saturday at Shotwell Stadium.

It was the first loss for the Lone Star Conference champion Wildcats (11-1).

Super Region 4 Championship Game

NY Times - Div. II Scoring Leader Is Running From Trouble

ABILENE, Tex. — Since high school, Bernard Scott has been running for
another chance.

He did not play his senior season after being involved in an off-field
fight. He has been arrested at least five times and is finishing 18 months of
probation for giving false information to a police officer during a traffic
stop. He is attending his fourth college since 2003.
----------------------------------------------------
On talent alone, Scott could be a late first-day pick in April’s N.F.L.
draft, said Gil Brandt, a pro football analyst.

“Everybody likes him,” Brandt said. “But they all keep their mouths
shut.”

NY Times - Quarterback’s Re-Emergence a Matter of Heart
ABILENE, Tex. — As a young quarterback at Tulane in 2002, Billy Don Malone
developed a reputation as a first-round N.F.L. talent. His future was considered so secure that his coach called him C.E., for the contract extension that Malone would surely earn him.

But a heart problem ended Malone’s career at Tulane before it ever really
got off the ground, sending him into a downward spiral. He left the university
with a grade point average below 1.5 and with what he later acknowledged was a
marijuana habit. He soon found himself milking cows on an 800-acre dairy farm
while living with his mother in Paris, Tex.

Northwest defense ready to show its grown since loss to Abilene
MARYVILLE, Mo. — His red cap has become a fixture at Northwest Missouri
State football games. Primarily for visibility as he calls plays and maybe just
a little bit for luck, defensive coordinator Scott Bostwick always dons the
notable head wear on game day.

At Abilene Christian today, he may find out exactly how much magic that
hat contains.

Wildcats face another playoff rematch

The Abilene Christian University Wildcats find themselves in both brand new and
quite familiar situations today when they host Northwest Missouri State in an
NCAA Division II quarterfinal playoff.

The second-ranked Wildcats (11-0) make their first appearance in the third round of the NCAA playoffs when the third-ranked Bearcats (11-1) visit Shotwell Stadium for a noon kickoff. But for the second week in a row, ACU faces a rematch against an opponent it beat on the road during the regular season.

Copy 'Cats: ACU hopes to emulate Northwest Missouri program

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats are the model program in
Division II football.

Since coach Mel Tjeerdsma took over the program in 1994, the Bearcats
have won 10 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles, two
national titles and played in five title games overall.

Abilene Christian University coach Chris Thomsen wouldn't mind
borrowing Tjeerdsma's blueprint.

Thanksgiving Day Football Roundup

ACU Wildcats thrive behind potent offensive line

Joseph Thompson, Sam Collins and the rest of the guys on the Abilene Christian University offensive line don't get much attention -- unless quarterback Billy Malone is sacked or running back Bernard Scott is stuffed behind the line of scrimmage. Fortunately, that doesn't happen very often.

In fact, Malone and Scott have put up unbelievable numbers this season. But none of it would be possible without the work of the offensive line, and yet those guys who toil in the trenches do so with little fanfare.

That's OK with Thompson, a three-year starter.

"We win, we're happy," he said. "If I can make a comparison, I think we're like the wheels that turn in the machine. The machine gets all the credit for doing the things, but the wheels are in there doing their job, continuing to work, continuing to work."

2008 Season Review - Midwestern State

It was a mixed bag for the Mustangs. They were expected to suffer a power outage on offense, but still have a solid defense, and those outlooks held true. They won some games early, despite the offense struggling, but lost 4 of their last six games as they hit the harder part of their schedule.

MSU got out of the gate 4-0 (rising to #17 in the AFCA poll), including a huge win over #21 Newberry College in week 3. None of the wins were dominating (14 pts was the largest margin), but the defense was very solid, and was allowing the offense time to gel. That didn't quite happen, as the Mustangs dropped their next two games to #5 WT and #19 Tarleton State by a combined 30-79 margin. The offense finally came around in game 7, and MSU scored 130 points over the next three weeks, losing just to the hot UCO Bronchos. The season finale against ACU, saw the Mustangs suffer the same fate as the rest of the LSC, a lopsided loss.

The passing game was slow coming around, but about midway through the season, Zack Eskridge found his groove. He finished the season with 1,682 yds passing and a team record 18 TD passes. Marcus Mathis led the rushing attack with 625 yds and 5 TDs. Seven receivers had at least 15 receptions, but none had more than 26. The defense was solid for the most part, keeping them in most games, but allowed 37 or more points 4 times (all losses).

Best Case Scenario
9-1 The deep Mustang defense gets even tougher, improves the teams LSC leading turnover margin, and the offense doesn't miss Polk as much as thought.

Worst Case Scenario
4-6 The tough schedule stunts the teams confidence, defense is simply solid, not great and offense suffers dropoff from losses of Polk, Lee and two all conference linemen.

Bearcats get second chance at stopping powerful Abilene offense
Big numbers are nice when they come in your paycheck. They’re not so nice when
they come with your next NCAA Division II football playoff opponent.

Abilene Christian, which Northwest Missouri State will face at noon on
Saturday in the quarterfinals in Abilene, Texas, racked up plenty of big numbers
— many of them record-setting — in a 93-68 victory against West Texas A&M.

That is a concern for a Northwest defense heavily laden with
underclassmen.

A&M-Commerce Knocks off #14 Tarleton by 18

A 20-4 run midway through the second half led Texas A&M University-Commerce to an 85-67 victory over host No. 14 Tarleton State.

Junior Cardell Hunter scored 20 of his 22 in the second half and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds for his first double double as a Lion. Teammate DeUndrae Spraggins scored 12 of the first 20 points for A&M-Commerce, who finished the contest with 20 points in the win. The duo was in double figures for the fifth-straight game and joined by Rashad Brown, who recorded his second straight double double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and Dominique Taylor added 11.

With a 43-39 lead with 15:44 left after a Spraggins tip in, A&M-Commerce went on a decisive a 20-4 run en route to the win. During the run, 12 of the 20 points came in the point against a taller Tarleton State squad.

Tarleton State (4-1) senior forward Eric Williams hit six three pointers for a game-high 24 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. In the loss, Tarleton State was held to 39% shooting from the field and outrebounded by the Lions by a...

The recruiting must go on

From the Ada Evening News
Bob Forrest

Ada — Although the search is ongoing for a new football coach, recruiting at East Central University isn’t standing still. But that doesn’t mean interim head coach Todd Fugett and the Tiger assistants are doing a lot of traveling, either.

“Until we get a head coach, we’re not going to get out on the road and recruit, and that’s okay,” Fugett said last week. “Right now, we’re looking at film and trying to find young men we think can play at this level.

“The big difference between now and this time last year is that we’re not getting out on the road right now,” he added. “We’re not going to high schools and talking to coaches.”

For starters, Bullington played on the 1950 team that went 11-0. He
also coached the 1973 team that won the Lone Star Conference title outright
before going on to in the NAIA national title. Bullington was athletic director
and recruited most of the players on the ACU team that shared a LSC title and

2008 Season Review - Texas A&M-Commerce

The 2008 season looked to be the year that Texas A&M-Commerce finally made a big step forward and challenge for a playoff spot. Their best offensive players - QB Terry Mayo and RB Nabil El-Amin - were both returning along with promising transfer WR Willie Thornton. The defense lost a few starters, but many of their returning players had quite a bit of playing experience.

Unfortunately for the Lions, they finished up at 5-5, and have not had a season over the .500 mark since 2001.

The main problem that continuously haunted the Commerce offense was their offensive line. They never seemed to be able to control the line of scrimmage and that ended up clogging the TAMC offense for most of the season. C Darron Sheppard and LT RJ Brisbon were very good, but the line as a whole just couldn't get it together. Their defense, as usual, was pretty good but not good enough to carry the inconsistent offense.

There were some high points - A tough win over Angelo State, a huge comeback against NSU, and a win in the Cotton Bowl. But there were also rough stretches along the way. The loss to UCO (without Mayo or El-Amin) really crushed their hopes for this season, not scoring from 1st and goal inside the 5 in the final minute and losing to SOSU was devastating, and the 200+ penalty yards against ECU were shocking.

Next season will be an interesting season in Commerce with so many of their main players leaving. A big recruiting season is vital to TAMC's future success.

Scoop Pre-Season Predictions:

Best Case Scenario - 8-2:
"...Outside of those games (Northwestern and ACU), the Lions should be favored in every other game they play. Actually running the board will be tough though..."

Worst Case Scenario - 5-5:
"...The only negative facing the Lions at this point appears to be their O-Line. If it becomes a major problem and Mayo can't stay on his feet, the entire offense will crumble. Their schedule is fairly easy this year, so even with a bad squad, .500 looks to be about as bad as it can get."

ACU shatters records in offensive explosion
The Abilene Christian University Wildcats were all but unstoppable
Saturday.

Bernard Scott scored seven touchdowns and Billy Malone passed for six
TDs as the Wildcats reached the end zone on 13 of 15 possessions as
second-ranked ACU defeated No. 9 West Texas A&M 93-68 in an NCAA
Division II
second-round playoff game at Shotwell Stadium.

ACU's Scott makes case for Harlon Hill Trophy
Several questions were tossed about in the Shotwell Stadium press box
Saturday during Abilene Christian University's 93-68 victory over West Texas
A&M in an NCAA Division II second-round playoff.

"How long was that touchdown?"

"Does ACU even have a punter?"

"Can the scoreboard handle triple digits?"

On a national scale, one very important question may have been answered
-- "Did Bernard Scott clinch the Harlon Hill Trophy with his seven-touchdown
performance?"

According to ACU coach Chris Thomsen, he did.

"In my mind it does, but my mind doesn't count," Thomsen said. "But I
think he's a Harlon Hill winner, personally."

Buffs 'D' struggles in playoffs again

A comment around Abilene after Saturday's West Texas A&M-Abilene Christian
football game was, "Heard the Wildcats came out OK in their basketball game."

The Wildcats certainly were hitting their 2s and 3s in a 93-68 victory
against the Buffs.

ACU quarterback Billy Malone, who wears No. 2, threw
for six touchdowns for the second time against WT, and running back Bernard
Scott, No. 3, scored a record seven touchdowns - six rushing - in a game that
may have caused the scoreboard operator at P.E. Shotwell Stadium to seek early
retirement.

Defenseless: WT struggles in 93-68 loss

ABILENE - Second verse, same as the first. Only worse.

Abilene Christian scored touchdowns on 13 of its 15 possessions and 37
points in third quarter into a stiff southerly wind in blowing away West Texas
A&M, 93-68, Saturday in front of 11,797 fans at P.E. Shotwell Stadium in the

NCAA Soccer Quarterfinal

SSC: MSU falls to Cal State-Dominguez Hills, 2-1
From the LSC Website

No. 3 Midwestern State fell to No. 9 California State-Dominguez Hills in Saturday's NCAA Division II national quarterfinal as the Toros claimed a 2-1 result.

Dominguez Hills (19-2-4) claimed its 17th-straight victory at Toro Stadium and will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships on Dec. 5 and 7 in Tampa. The Toros will face the winner of tomorrow's quarterfinal between the University of Tampa and Tusculum University.

The Toros took advantage of a misclear in the third minute of the second half as Chris Perkins collected the ball near the top of the box and served a pass to Jordan Rover who one-touched the ball to Scott Mariano who beat MSU keeper with a one-timer.

Dominguez Hills tacked on a second goal on a counter in the 63rd minute when Rover once again hit Mariano breaking free on the left. Mariano shot a laser from just outside of the box to give the Toros a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs, who placed seven of their 13 shots on goal, were unable to take advantage of a golden opportunity just 40 seconds before intermission. Junior Nick Auditore took a through ball and beat Dominguez Hills' goalkeeper Miguel Benitez to the far post, but the shot missed narrowly wide as the teams went scoreless into intermission.

The Mustangs broke through in the 85th minute when Auditore notched his 12th goal of the season when he collected a long pass from center back Robert Swann. Auditore dribbled into the box and beat Benitez to the near post to cut the margin to 2-1.

Midwestern continued to put the pressure on the Toros, but Bentez came through with his sixth save of the match on a sprawling dive to snarl Craig Sutherland's drive from the top of the box in the 88th minute.

The Mustangs close the season with a 19-3 mark after advancing to the NCAA Division II national semifinals last season.

NCAA Regional Volleyball

Volleyball: WT falls to Emporia State, 3-0
From the LSC Website

No. 4 West Texas A&M was swept by No. 5 Emporia State (26-28, 17-25, 29-31) in the semifinals of the NCAA South Central Regional.

Three players reached double-digit scoring, led by Laura Prinsen with 12, followed by Melissa Harper and Natalie Johnson each tallying 11 kills, as WT challenged ESU in the first and third sets.

The Lady Buffs (34-5) tremendous season comes to an end after earning their third straight Lone Star Conference title with a perfect 13-0 record in league play.

NCAA Cross Country Championships

Cross Country: ACU's men finish fourth at NCAA Championships
From the LSC Website

The Abilene Christian men's team finished fourth, while Midwestern State's women were 15th at the NCAA Division II Championships meet held on a snow-covered course in Slippery Rock, Pa.

The Wildcats were led by Julius Nyango in 11th place with a time of 31:39, while Daniel Maina crossed the finish line 16th (31:44) in the 8K race.

Competing as an individual, Texas A&M Commerce's Tyler Tyndell finished 57th in 32:36.
On the women's side, Katie Stepp paced the Mustangs covering the 6K course in 22:21.

Individually, ACU's Winrose Karunde finished 26th (22:24) and Loice Cheboi 78th (23:28), while West Texas A&M's Jenniffer Cherono was 62nd (23:17).

Saturday Football Roundup

ACU has too many weapons for West Texas A&M

Sorry West Texas A&M. This is the year the Abilene Christian University
Wildcats win it all. They're certainly better than the Buffaloes.

Why? Well, for starters, the offense is loaded with weapons. A defense
must basically pick its poison. You can try stopping running back Bernard Scott,
the best player in Division II football, and dare ACU to beat you in the air.
The only problem with that is the fact quarterback Billy Malone has a lot of
great receivers in Johnny Knox, Edmund Gates and Jonathan Ferguson, just to name a few.

Wildcats, Buffs meet yet again

The fact that the Abilene Christian University Wildcats and West
Texas A&M Buffaloes are meeting in yet another big game should come as no
surprise.
Recent seasons have seen the teams have battle for supremacy in the
Lone Star Conference South Division as well as spots in the NCAA Division II
playoff field.
A second chance

Even though he wears purple and white, Abilene Christian running back Bernard
Scott should be appreciated by West Texas A&M fans.

Scott has displaced one of the Lone Star Conference's top runners, former Wildcats standout Wilbert Montgomery, in the record book. Montgomery led ACU to the 1973 NAIA national championship and was an All-Pro while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. In two seasons, Scott, the Harlon Hill Award runnerup last year and one of eight finalists this year, has rushed for 3,860 yards and 55 touchdowns.

Buffs likely to see more school, LSC records fall

Goal 1 today in Abilene for West Texas A&M is winning the game and advancing
to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals for the first time.

But there also are more records to be broken.

Last year's clutch player looking forward to game

West Texas A&M was clinging to a one-touchdown lead against ACU last year
and going through players like Congress through bailout plans. On defense, WT's
need was so great that redshirt freshman Derrick Peoples was called to duty in
the middle of the line.

Peoples held his own and was part of a key tackle that helped the Buffs exit Shotwell Stadium with a 41-31 victory over the Wildcats. As it turned out, it was the fewest points ACU scored all season.

Buffs must contain ACU trio to achieve playoff first

Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to
leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Superman?

Nah, just Abilene Christian's trio of Johnny Knox, Billy Malone and Bernard
Scott. They are super men.

The Big One - Final Chapter

'Cats, Buffs take rivalry to playoffs

Jonathan Ferguson knows quite a bit about the rivalry between Abilene
Christian University and West Texas A&M. The senior wide receiver has played
the Buffaloes five times during his four-year career at ACU.

"Man, it's one of the biggest rivalries in D-II football, I promise
you," Ferguson said. "We're usually both ranked high in the region, and we both
have pretty powerful offenses and try to develop good schemes for each other.
But yeah, man, they probably play us harder than anybody else, and we play them
hard. I also have a lot of friends that play on that team. I take pride in it.
It's something you hear in the summer and the spring. Even when you're not
playing, you hear about it. So it's a big-time rivalry."

Preview and Prediction
This is how it was supposed to be - a playoff rematch of the top two LSC teams, both ranked in the top ten nationally. Everyone who has followed the LSC this year knows that ACU and WTAM have been at a different level than the rest of the conference. ACU comes into the contest with the #1 offense in scoring and total yards and the #1 defense for both. WTAM is #2 in scoring offense, total offense and scoring defense, and #3 in yards allowed.

Individual stars populate both teams. ACU of course has Harlon Hill finalist Bernard Scott, all-time LSC passing leader Billy Malone, and Johnny Knox. WTAM counters with the Keith Null, the single season passing yardage record holder (and adding to it weekly), Charly Martin, who will own most single season and career LSC receiving records, and recently healed Keithon Flemming. But there's much more to each team than just three players. ACU had 16 first-team All-LSC South selections (7 more on the second team), and players claimed 5 individual awards. WTAM had 6 chosen to the first team, and 11 to the second team, while 3 individuals were recognized at their positions.

Last Week
ACU was idle, having earned a bye as the top seed in Super Region 4.

West Texas jumped out to an early lead on the #8 Central Washington Wildcats, holding on for a 49-42 win. The Buffs gained 604 yds (111 rushing, 493 passing), with Flemming rushing for 99 yds and 4 TDs, Martin and Seth Hayden both going over 160 receiving yards, and Null hitting over 70% of his passes for 463 yds. The defense limited CWU to 64 yds rushing and All-American Mark Reilly hit under 50% of his passes. The outcome of the game wasn't decided until the final minute, however, with CWU unable to find the end zone, despite having a first and ten from the 17 yard line.

Last time these teams met
ACU jumped out to a 31-7 halftime lead as WT turned the ball over three times. TheBuffs pulled to within 10 points twice, but ACU answered both times to earn the victory. ACU piled up 687 yds of offense, 301 yds rushing and 386 yds passing. Bernard Scott had a career day with 268 yds rushing and 141 receiving and a combined 3 TDs. Johnny Knox had 203 yds receiving and 2 TDs. Billy Malone threw for 386 yds and 3 TDs. West Texas, playing without Keithon Flemming could only must 65 yds rushing, but Keith Null did throw for 415 yds and 4 TDs, but also had 3 Ints. Carl Johnson and Charly Martin each had over 100 yds receiving and a combined 3 TDs. On a day dominated by offense, ACU's Craig Harris probably had the biggest impact with 6 tackles, a forced fumble, and 2 Ints, including one at the ACU 2 yard line in the fourth quarter, to keep WT from pulling to within a FG. In addition to Flemming, Cashmin Thomas has returned to the starting lineup and should give some much needed help Saturday.

Prediction
Hmmm...let's see, ACU beats WT in the regular season in Canyon and the teams face off in the playoffs. Sound familiar? It happened in 2006, with ACU winning in the regular season 49-33 with Billy Malone throwing 6 TD passes. In the rematch, ACU had a 20-6 in the fourth, when Malone went down with an injury. The Wildcats did manage another TD when Taber Minner reeled off a 76 yd TD run, but WT came back to tie the game with 55 seconds to go, and won in OT as Don Hooks blocked ACU's FG.

Will it be de ja vu? ACU is much more diverse, with more potent weapons on offense and a better defense. Will ACU's off week hurt them? Again, likely not. The offense of ACU has been in top form all season long, and did not show any rust in the season opener at Northwest Missouri, or after an off-week early in the season. Will Flemming and Thomas make a difference for WT? Possibly. Flemming has rushed for 227 yds and 6 TDs and caught 10 passes for another 56 yds in the two weeks since returning from an injury. Thomas had 8 tackles last week against another top passing game, so he is certainly welcome back as well.

ACU is certainly the favorite this weekend, but a WT win wouldn' t be a shock. It should be a close game, with turnovers and execution likely to decide the game. ACU leads the LSC with a plus 21 turnover margin, while WT has been prone to turning over the ball at times. Homefield advantage to the Wildcats as well. ACU moves on to the Regional Championship 45-35.

2008 Season Review - Angelo State

Injuries and youth throw a monkey wrench into season.
A promising season started off with 14-21 loss to IAA Texas State, outgaining the Bobcats, but missing three FGs. Worse than losing the game, the Rams lost starting QB Josh Neiswander for the season, forcing the Rams to play two freshmen at quarterback for the remainder of the season. The defense played well enough through the first six weeks to help ASU to a 3-3 record. At that point, the defense was first in the LSC in yardage and second in points allowed. But it was all downhill from that point, as Angelo State faced the top 4 offenses over the final five weeks of the season - getting outscored by a 182-45 margin, allowing 486 yds per contest, while the offense generated just 221.

Running back Daniel Thomas was once again, the bright spot for Angelo State. Thomas finished the season with 1,020 rushing yards, (eighth best in Ram history) and was named second team all-LSC South for the second consecutive year. For his career, he became just the fourth Ram to finish with more than 3,000 yards on the ground.

2008 LSC Statistical Rankings
#13 Scoring Offense (#8 in 2007)
#12 Passing Efficiency (#7)
#13 Passing Yards(#7)
#13 Red Zone offense (#11)

#7 Scoring Defense (#12 - 10 pts per game fewer than 2007)#8 Total Defense (#13 - 121 yds per game fewer than 2007)
#8 Rush Defense ( #12 - improved by 122 yds per game)
#2 Interceptions (#7)

In both scoring defense and total defense, ASU registered the second best improvement in the LSC (both behind only Abilene Christian). The rush defense registered the biggest improvement in the LSC.

Standout Players
Jason Watson - All-LSC South 1st team
Daniel Thomas - All-LSC South 2nd team
Cody Smith - All-LSC South honorable mention
Jordan Cortez - All-LSC South honorable mention
Edward Cantrell - All-LSC South honorable mention

Seniors moving on
Daniel Thomas - RB
- 3 year starter, 4th on the ASU all-time list for rushing yards, 1,020 yds this year, 3,094 for his career (2nd team All-LSC South-2007, 2008)
Terrell Lee - RB - moved to RB this year, second on team in rushing with 365 yds
Sam Tindol - WR - 81 receptions for 1,097 yds in his career
Drew Peterson - WR - 87 receptions for 883 yds in his career
Jason Watson - TE - 24 receptions for 283 yds in his career (1st team All-LSC South 2008)
Joey Faken - OL - started 19 games at tackle in his two years
Jordan Cortez - LB - 184 career tackles (HM All-LSC South in 2008)
Quintin Butler - DB - 5 interceptions in his two years, including one returned for TD vs Tarleton State
Michael McLeod - DB - 156 career tackles, increased each year from 23 as freshman to 53 this year, 6 career interceptions.
Tarric Jones - DB - 122 career tackles, with 3 interceptions

Once again, the Rams do not lose many seniors, but Daniel Thomas will be hard to replace. The Rams expect 7 starters on both sides of the ball to return next season, and will have three experienced QBs to direct the offense.

LSC Scoop Preseason Predictions:
Best Case Scenario
6-5 Offensive line continues improvement, running game allows Neiswander to continue development without the pressure of carrying team. Young defense improves, keeping ASU in games.

Worst Case Scenario
2-9 Defense does not show noticeable improvement, QB play remains inconsistent, team starts slowly, causing a loss in confidence.

Actual Record 3-8 Could have been much better, but losing your only experienced QB in the opener doesn't help matters.

Womens Soccer - TAMC falls in third round

From the LSC Website

Texas A&M-Commerce's memorable season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Truman State in the third round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship in Kirksville, Mo.

The Lions finished their season with a record of 16-4-3 after making its fourth NCAA Championship appearance in school history.

Truman took a 2-0 lead into halftime before A&M-C's Melissa DoRemus scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute. Taylor Jordan made four saves as the Lions were out shot 19-to-8.

2008 Season Review - Eastern New Mexico

When you put in a totally new offensive scheme and put young players in key positions, you are building for the future, not the present. And the young Greyhounds showed enough flashes on offense to give hope for the future. Freshman J. J. Harp threw for 1,902 yds and 14 TDs. His top target was fellow freshman Darian Dale (62-704, 4 TDs), with freshman Matt Handler not far behind (36-365 6 TDs). Another underclassman, Joseph Banyard, was the leading rusher (420 yds, 6 TDs) and the third leading receiver (49 receptions). The changes resulted in 6 fewer points and 80 fewer yards per game, compared to 2007. Somewhat of a suprise, the defense found themselves at the bottom of the LSC, allowing 419 yards per game (last) and 35 points per game (second from last).

The season started off on a bad note, as ENMU lost their opener to NAIA Southern Nazarene 9-16, in a game delayed by bad weather. They rebounded to beat Southwestern Oklahoma the following week 37-24, but followed that up with 8 consecutive losses, though several of the games were competitive. The Greyhounds have lost 13 straight LSC South Games, outscored by a 263-573 margin. The team did close the season on an up note, beating Oklahoma Panhandle State 59-13.

Among the Seniors moving on...
DB Jeremy Hibbler 235 tackles, 8 for losses, 2 Ints in 2 years (2nd Team All-LSC South 2008, Honorable Mention 2007)
DL Ronald Green 79 tackles, 17.5 for losses, 4.5 sacks in 1 year (2nd Team All-LSC South 2008)
DL Kyle Wilson 171 tackles, 46 for losses, 18.5 sacks in 4 years (2nd Team All-LSC South 2006, Honorable Mention 2007, 2005)

From Coach Ribaudo

I think the future looks bright. The offense is young , but talented. We have some good young QB’s, WR’s, RB’s and OL’s. It was the 1st year in the offense, I think we laid the foundation. We need to improve our run game (that could have gone better). We expect to improve in all areas of the offense (pass pro, run game, yards after catch), on defense our pass coverage and pass rush need to improve quit a bit. We will miss Jeremy Hibbler and Ron Green. They made a lot of tackles.

We only had 12 seniors on the team and have less than 10 juniors. We are a young team with a lot of potential.

LSC Scoop Preseason Outlook
Best Case Scenario
6-5 Youngsters are ready to contribute, OL adjusts to new blocking schemes, and defense improves with a year of experience. ENMU comes out of the gate quickly beating Southern Nazerene in the opener, then taking two of three crossover games, and stealing a couple of LSC South games before closing with Panhandle State.

Worst Case Scenario
2-9 Youngsters suffer growing pains, Air Raid offense slow to take shape, defense changes fail to slow down opponents. Even struggling the Greyhounds should be able to win their non-conference games, but they could go 0-9 against the LSC as youth and inexperience with brand new systems on both sides of the ball prove to be too much for the team to overcome.

Actual Record 2-9 Losing the opener didn't help matters, but the team continued to play hard all year long, and almost upset Texas A&M-Kingsville late in the season.

Special delivery
QB Malone proves to be an efficient mailman for unbeaten ACU

Do you know who delivers your mail? Odds are, you don't. In fact, you
probably don't even think about it -- unless something goes wrong.

That's exactly what Abilene Christian University expects from its
starting quarterback. Just be a delivery system. Get the ball to the weapons.
Let them do all the work. Be the mailman.

Flemming looking forward to ACU

Two plays weren't enough for Keithon Flemming.

"I got two plays on offense but Coach (Scott) Parr just teased me," the
West Texas A&M sophomore said of getting minimal offensive snaps the first
time the Buffs played Abilene Christian. He was lucky to get that.

Flemming broke a bone in his right hand early in WT's homecoming game
against Midwestern State, the sixth game of the season. He kept playing anyway
and it was during practice the next week that the injury was discovered.

He missed the next four games. Sort of.

FOOTBALL GOES WITH HOMECOMING AT UIW
From the Incarnate Word Website

Incarnate Word’s football team has been going through fall drills since early August and now it’s time to put on a show as part of UIW’s homecoming weekend.

The Cardinals will be in full pads Saturday (November 22 beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Benson Stadium on campus. All football fans, particularly those curious about the inaugural season of 2009, are invited to watch the action.

Coach Mike Santiago and his staff will divvy up the players and then step back as the pads pop.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m. the University is sponsoring a tailgate party nearby the stadium as a warmup to the game itself.

Once the Saturday intrasquad is completed, the 80-plus players will then hit the dining hall and the weight room in anticipation of being bigger and stronger for August 29, 2009, when the Cardinals open the season at home against Monterrey Tech.

SAN ANTONIO — Oh, how San Antonio has longed for a football team to call its
own.

It has spent 15 years, since the Alamodome was finished in 1993,
courting the NFL, but the nation's seventh-largest city can't get the nod. San
Antonio fans don't even have a substantial collegiate team to claim.

But that will change next fall when the city's first scholarship team in a generation is
fielded by a rather unexpected source: a small Catholic university that once had
a reputation as a finishing school for girls.

Green Honored with NCAA Award

From the Texas A&M-Kingsville Sports Information Department
by Fred Nuesch

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Darrell Green, former Texas A&I All-American football and track and field athlete, has been named as a recipient of the 2009 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award Jan. 15 in Washington D.C.

The presentation of the six Silver Anniversary honorees will come at a luncheon at the annual NCAA Convention. The event will be held in the Newseum. The award is one of the highest presented by the NCAA.

It is the second major award for Green within the past year. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. He played each of his 20 record-setting seasons in the NFL as a Washington Redskin. Green was a first-round draft choice of Washington in 1983.

With the Javelinas, Green was a two-sport letterman, playing football for four seasons and running on the track and field team for three years.

From Houston (Texas) Jones High School, Green was an Associated Press Little All-America and American Football Coaches Association All-America first-team honoree. He was on the All-Lone Star Conference first team as a junior and senior and was selected as the LSC’s most valuable player in 1982. He was selected by his teammates as a captain in 1982.

He was selected to the Lone Star Conference Team of the Decade for the 1980s. Green got much of his collegiate notability in track. His first meet came in the spring of 1981 in San Angelo, Texas, and he ran a 10.08 in the 100-meter dash. That was the beginning of his reputation as one of the world’s fastest runners. The mark still stands as the all-time best in the Lone Star Conference.

Green holds the Lone Star Conference records, which are set at the annual conference meet, in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. His times are 10.22 in the 100 and 20.67 in the 200.
His all-time collegiate best in the 100 was 10.08, 20.50 in the 200 and 45.90 in the 400. He ran on relay teams that recorded 40.43 in the 400 and 3:10.06 in the 1600.

He was named the most valuable track performer at the 1982 and 1983 Lone Star Conference Championships. He won gold medals at the LSC meet in the 100-meter dash in 1981, in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in 1982 and in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in 1983.
Green was named to the NCAA Division I All-America roster in 1981 and 1982, and was on the NCAA Division II All-America team in five events in 1981 and 1982. He was NAIA All-America in 1981 and 1982 in four events. Green was on All-America first teams in track and field 10 different times.

Green has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor, the NCAA Division II Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Javelina Hall of Fame.He has been highly honored on and off the field since joining the Redskins.

2008 Season Review - East Central

East Central came into the 2008 season with only 7 wins in the last 3 seasons combined. This season wasn't much different. After only putting up 3 wins, head coach Kurt Nicholls would lose his job and East Central is now looking for someone else to come in and hopefully bring more success to Ada.

Quick - name the Top 3 Passing Yardage leaders in the LSC. Obviously West Texas' Keith Null and ACU's Billy Malone jump to mind for the top 2 positions. Who's #3? East Central's Marcus Johnson quietly put up 282 yards per game to rank #3 in the LSC.

Johnson was the lone bright spot on the field for ECU this season. He was able to put together his 2nd consecutive LSC North Offensive Back of the Year Award. The lack of depth around Johnson was too much for ECU to handle though, and defenses sold out to stop him and didn't seem to worry about anyone else. This makes Johnson's statistics even that much more impressive.

ECU's main problem this season was their defense. They struggled all year to contain the run, and had major issues forcing turnovers. In the position the Tigers were in this season, they needed those 2 issues to be positives for them to have any chance this season.

2 of ECU's 3 wins were in overtime (against NSU and Southern Nazarene). In our preseason preview for ECU we stated in their worst case scenario:
"...Improvement in running game does not materialize (They finished the season #11 in Rushing Offense with 69 ypg) and the offense relies too heavily on Johnson. Run Defense allows opponents to control the game and the clock (ECU finished LAST in Rushing Defense, giving up a whopping 185 yards per game).

Looking ahead to 2009, whoever ECU ends up bringing in at Head Coach will have a big job on his hands. You also have to wonder about possible transfer losses with Coach Nicholls leaving Ada, which there has already been rumblings of.

2008 Statistics (LSC Rankings)
#7 Scoring Offense
#12 Scoring Defense
#11 Rushing Offense (68 ypg)
#13 Rushing Defense (185 ypg - the next team, SOSU, only had 140)
#13 Forced INT's (5 - the next team, TSU, had 10)

#3 Passing Offense

Strange Stats of the Year:
- ECU only had 49 yards in punt returns ALL YEAR, for an average of 2.9 yards per return
- The turnover margin that ECU put up in 2008 was staggering. They finished the season with a -21 Turnover Margin. The next worse team was NSU, who finished the season at -5.

Standout Players of 2008

- QB Marcus Johnson - #3 Passing Yards (282 ypg), #3 Total Yards (282 ypg), #6 Pass Efficiency, LSC North Offensive Back of the Year
- RB Joshua Maldanado - #5 Rushing TD (10)
- WR Tyrone Gibbs - #10 Receptions (4.7 per game), #6 All Purpose Yards (111 ypg)

LSC Scoop Preseason Predictions:

Best Case Scenario 6-5
"New receiving corps gels with Johnson, and experienced OL allows running game to improve...New blood on Defense leads to improvements, especially on run defense."

Worst Case Scenario 2-9
"...Improvement in running game does not materialize. WR's not up to last year's standards, and an offense that relies too heavily on Johnson. Run defense allows opponents control the game and the clock. First 3 weeks, ECU's confidence takes a hit and does not recover." (ECU lost the first 3 weeks by a combined 106 points)

Actual 2008 Record 3-8

WT takes momentum to ACU

Rematch. Has a nice ring to it.

For the second time in three years, West Texas A&M and Abilene
Christian collide in the NCAA Division II playoffs. In 2006, the Buffs and
Wildcats played a classic at Kimbrough Memorial, with WT scoring late in
regulation to tie the game, then winning 30-27 in overtime on Jon Roberts' field
goal.

Collums finalist for honor
From the ACU Website

ABILENE -- Abilene Christian University offensive coordinator Ken Collums has been named a finalist for the FootballScoop.com D2 Coordinator of the Year.

Finalists have been chosen for the 14 awards from the following areas: Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Strength &Conditioning Coach, Quarterbacks Coach, Running Backs Coach, Wide Receivers Coach, Offensive Line Coach, Defensive Line Coach, Linebackers Coach, SecondaryCoach, Division 1-AA Coordinator, Division II Coordinator and Division III Coordinator of the Year.

Collums is one of four Division II coordinators up for the award, joining Minnesota-Duluth defensive coordinator John Steger, Pittsburg State offensive coordinator Tim Beck and Chadron State defensive coordinator Todd Auer on the list.

Collums has directed the nation's top offensive unit each of the last two years, helping the Wildcats to a 20-3 record in that time frame. In their last 23 games, the Wildcats have scored 1,138 points (49.5 points per game) and racked up 12,522 yards of total offense (544.4 yards per game). ACU ranks first nationally in scoring offense and total offense, second in fewest sacks allowed (0.5 per game), seventh in passing offense (322.0 ypg) and 16th in rushing offense (221.3 ypg).

Last year's ACU offense set an NCAA all-divisions record by becoming the first unit to boast a 3,500-yard passer (Billy Malone), 2,000-yard running back (Bernard Scott) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Johnny Knox and Jerale Badon) on the same team.

LSC Basketball Players of the Week

Players of the Week
LSC North Women's
Britney Jordan, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Sr., Guard, Peoria, Ill./Peoria Woodruff
Jordan recorded 30 points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals to lead the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions to their fifth straight season opening victory. She scored 23 points in the first half, helping the Lions jump out to a 30 point lead at the break.

LSC South Women's
Jamie Dreiling, West Texas A&M University, Sr., Forward, Lake Kiowa, Texas/Rio Vista
Dreiling recorded her first double-double of the season in the Lady Buffs' first win of the season against Huston-Tillotson. The final score was 96-48, with 17 of those points coming from Dreiling. She also tallied 10 rebounds to complete her double-double. Dreiling contributed five assists and two steals and was 3-4 from the free-throw line.

LSC North Men's
Kallan Glasgow, Cameron University, Jr., Forward, Apache, Okla./Apache
Glasgow had an absolutely phenomenal, unbelievable game on Saturday against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College, and was a rebound shy of tying a school record. Glasgow led both teams with 25 rebounds and 23 points on 10-15 shooting. He also recorded an assist and a steal in his 31 minutes of play. Glasgow's double-double against the Saints is his second in a row including Friday night's exhibition game against the University of North Texas. At only 6'2" Glasgow is proving that size doesn't matter when playing under the boards. The CU men's basketball school record for rebounds in a game is 26, held by Ray Franklin. Franklin set the record in 1979 against the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

LSC South Men's
Dejan Sencanski, Abilene Christian University, Sr., F, Zrenjanin, Serbia/Zrenjaninska Gimnazija
Sencanski helped ACU open up with a 99-58 victory over Hillsdale Free Will Baptist Monday night. He missed just one shot all night and connected on 8 of 9 shots from the field, 3 of 4 from behind the arc, and 2 of 2 from the free-throw line. He also led all players with six rebounds and had two steals.

2008 Season Review - Southwestern Oklahoma

Coming off of a 6-5 record in 2007, many thought the Southwestern Oklahoma would take the next step towards being a power in the LSC North in 2008. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

The Bulldogs finished up with a very disappointing 3-8 record in 2008, and their Head Coach - Ryan Held - didn't make it to the end of the season before deciding he would step down from his position.

Their 3 wins came against NSU, Oklahoma Panhandle and Northwestern Oklahoma. Looking back at Southwestern's LSC Scoop Season Preview, we stated:

"...Playing Oklahoma Pandhandle and Northwestern Oklahoma again should be 2 easy wins. Southwestern has alot of swing games this year that could easily go either way..."

Southwestern ended up going a disappointing 1-4 in those games. The games we listed as swing games were as follows, along with the actual scores:
- Eastern New Mexico - Lost 37-24
- Angelo State - Lost 24-2
- Northeastern State - Won 17-16
- East Central - Lost 42-21
- Central Oklahoma - Lost 23-16

Due to the fact that Southwestern is in the middle of a transition period right now while looking for a new Head Coach, we spoke with Southwestern Athletic Director Todd Thurman, and he gave us the following insight on their season and the future of the Bulldog program:

"We felt like this season was just one play away from being a great year. If we could have knocked down the ball at the end of the Tarleton State game and not allowed the game winning touchdown with less than 13 seconds, it would have made all the difference for the rest of the season. That is how important the mental part of the game is.

Coach Held left us with the program in great shape. We are hoping to find the best possible candidate that fits Southwestern Oklahoma State University. We are exciting about the interest that we are receiving, and feel confident that the program will move forward under new leadership."

Buffs earn rematch
In football game that wowed fans with back-and-forth scoring, it was
defense that made the difference.

After missing a field goal that might have iced the game with 1:55 to play,
No. 9 West Texas A&M had to rely on its defense one last time to preserve a
wild, 49-42, NCAA Division II first-round victory against No. 8 Central
Washington in front of 6,795 fans on a cool but sun-splashed afternoon at
Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

2008 Season Review - Northeastern State University

Beginning today, we will begin a new daily series reviewing each team's 2008 season. Beginning with NSU and moving up to the top of the end of season LSC Scoop Power Rankings.

Coming into the 2008 season, not much was expected of NSU. They were coming off of a 3-7 season, just implemented a brand new coaching staff, and weren't expected to put up much of a fight.

While they did finish the season with a 1-10 record, they actually put up alot of fight against some teams they weren't expected to have a chance against. If you look at the heartbreaking endings to some of their games, you will see they could have EASILY had a much different outlook on the season:

- In week 3, they were beating MSU 3-0 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter before MSU returned a fumble 25 yards for a TD. Midwestern went on to win that game 7-3.

- 2 weeks later, they took ECU into Overtime in Ada, and lost on a blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown.

- The very next week, they lost by 1 point to A&M-Commerce on a touchdown run by Terry Mayo with only 2:36 remaining. At one point in the 2nd quarter, NSU was actually winning this game 27-3.

- The NEXT week, they went to Weatherford and lost to Southwestern Oklahoma 17-16.

Looking into their team statistic rankings in the LSC, it is fairly easy to see what their main problems were:

- #12 Scoring Offense
- #11 Scoring Defense
- #12 Rushing Offense (67 ypg)
- #13 3rd Down Conversions (18%)

LSC Scoop Pre-Season Prediction:
Best Case Scenario: 5-6
"...With ECU and SWOSU, those are also possible wins. Tough to see NSU making any kind of a run this season."
Worst Case Scenario: 2-9
"...If they can't get some kind of production from one of the new QB's, it's going to be a mirror of last season. Passing game can't do anything, and everyone loads the box against the running game."
Actual Record: 1-10

Women's Soccer: A&M-C Advances to Sweet 16 with 2-0 Win Over Central Missouri

Senior Melissa DoRemus scored and assisted on another goal as the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's soccer team defeated host No. 9 Central Missouri, 2-0, in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday afternoon in Warrensburg, Mo.

DoRemus settled the ball and flicked it to junior Whitney Hancock, who knocked it in the 75th minute to put the Lions in front by a 1-0 margin.

The Mesquite, Texas native added an insurance goal in the 81st minute after a pass from Lasley. She went from the left side just outside the box and lofted a shot over CMU goalkeeper Lauren Bamvakais head to extend the margin to 2-0.

The Lions offensive attack out shot the Jennies by 12-to-9 margin, including a 7-to-1 difference in shots on goal. The defense for the Lions was inflexible against a Central Missouri attack that had outscored its opponents by a 36-to-12 margin on the season.

A&M-Commerce junior goalkeeper Taylor Jordan recorded her sixth shutout of the season and lowered her goals-against average to 0.71. The Argyle, Texas native has allowed just one goal in the last 414:28.

The win raises the A&M-Commerce record to 16-3-3 in 2008 and the 16 wins match the 1999 team, who was the last A&M-Commerce women's soccer team to reach the Sweet 16, for the most wins in a single season.

The Lions advance to the Sweet 16 and will face Truman, who defeated Washburn by a 1-0 margin in the other regional. The two teams will be joined by the two advancing teams from the West Region for a pair of matches Friday (Nov. 21) and the NCAA Quarterfinal on Sunday (Nov. 23). Central Washington at West Texas A&M

Wildcats Sports Playoff Central
CWU Game Notes
WTAM Game Notes

Central Washington - the Wildcats of Central Washington will face West Texas tomorrow at 1. CWU finished their season 10-1, with their only loss (35-38) coming to FCS Montana. Montana, by the way is the #5 team in both the FCS Coaches Poll and The Sports Network poll. The played two teams that WT also faced - Mesa State (48-14) and Azusa Pacific (36-6).

The Wildcats have been very balanced on offense this year - 359 rushing attempts and 361 passes. The passing game has been murch more effective, generating 305 yards per game. No surprise, given that they have one of DII's top QB's in Mike Reilly. Reilly, a preseason All American, completed 68% of his passes, and threw for 3,286 yds, with 32 TDs and only 5 Ints and a QB rating of 173.26. His top receiver is Johnny Spevak with 82 catches for 1,313 yds and 16 TDs. When they run the ball, Jerome Morris has been their top threat. Morris missed 3 games early in the season, but has returned strong, and has 509 yds and 12 TDs for the season. Reilly, Spevak, TE Jared Bronson, and OL John Gariano were all name first team All-GNAC. Morris, OL Aaron Gilbert, and OL Matt Coffman were named to the second team.

Defensively, the Wildcats have allowed 21.6 pts and 343 yds per game. The run defense has been stingy, giving up just 88 yds per game and 3.0 yds per carry. The pass defense is allowing 255 yds per game and 21 TDs for the year. They have picked off 15 passes. The top three in tackles are LBs Buddy Wood, Chris James, and Adam Bighill who have combined for 219 tackes, 18.5 for losses, 7.5 sacks, with 4 Ints and 6 passes broken up. The secondary is led by Courtney Smith, Jerome Williams, Taylor Breitzman, Jason Gran and J R Jamerson (combined 214 tackles, 9 Ints and 17 passes broken up). The defensive line features Mitch Reffett, Tyrell Nielsen and Andrew Oney who have combined for 32 tackles for losses and 16.5 sacks. Named to the first team All-GNAC team were Reffett, Wood, Smith and Williams. Second teamers include Nilesen, Oney, and Bighill.

They also made the playoffs in 2007 as a member of the now defunct North Central Conference. They defeated Ashland 40-24 in the first round and top seed Nebraska-Omaha 20-17 in the second round, before falling to Grand Valley State 21-41 in the national quarterfinals.

Game outlook
This one of only a few games where the Buffs opponent has a quarterback equal to or better than Keith Null. Mike Reilly is 6'3" 211 lbs, and is one of a handfull of DII QBs on the NFL radar. The numbers he has put up this year are no fluke either - last year in the tough NCC, he threw for 3,386 yds with 30 TDs and 10 Ints. For his career, he has 12,028 yds, 113 TDs and only 39 Ints. And don't look at the CWU schedule and think that puts them at a disadvantage. In 2007, they competed in the NCC and made the playoffs, and went further in the playoffs than any LSC team since 2003. One last thought about the GNAC, remember Chadron from the RMAC had good success against the LSC in recent history.

Their should be lots of balls flung around in Canyon - with two quarterbacks of this caliber, they represent your best chance of winning. Both have numerous targets to throw to, with one WR that stands out. CWU does have a big advantage in turnover margin - +17 to WT's +3. For WT to win, they need to win or at least draw this category. There's not enough on paper to separate these two teams. So we'll go with homefield advantage, and the senior leadership of WT on both sides of the ball stepping up and easing WT past CWU - 38-35.

Non-Football Stories

Mustangs move on with 2OT win
Midwestern State’s men soccer team had the bitter taste of defeat in their
mouths for five days.

On Thursday night, the No. 3 Mustangs used unranked Incarnate Word as
mouthwash, beating them 2-1 in a thrilling, double-overtime win in the first
round of the 2008 NCAA Division II men’s soccer championship.

Closer to Home 11.14.08
Abilene Christian University baseball coach Britt Bonneau announced
Thursday that the Wildcats have added three junior college transfers for the
2010 season.

Pitchers David Carpenter and Zach Sneed -- both of whom will play this
season for Paris Junior College -- both agreed to transfer to ACU, as did Howard
College pitcher Will Calhoun. All three will be sophomores at their respective
junior colleges in 2009.

TWU knocks out Mustangs, 3-1
CANYON, Texas — Midwestern State committed 31 errors Thursday night and fell to Texas Woman’s University 25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16 in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championships at West Texas A&M Fieldhouse.

Lady Buffs make quick work of UCO
"We talk all the time about how volleyball is a game of matchups, and when you
look across the net and see something that's in your favor, you have to take
care of the ball and milk that for as many points as you can," WT coach Tony
Graystone said. "This team understands that concept and they're very good at
it."

Lady Buffs to face Washburn
"I am expecting a hard game between two good teams," Lauffer said. "It is
going to be a tough game for us. When you get to this point of the season, all
teams are good.

"We think there are going to be a lot of individuals duels around the
field. I think both teams will defend well, and I don't see either one getting
blown out."

Season ends for ASU volleyball team
The Angelo State University volleyball team saw its season come to an end in the
first round of the Lone Star Conference championship tournament, falling to
Abilene Christian 3-0 Thursday afternoon in Canyon. It was ASU's first
postseason appearance since 2004.

Montalvo to suit up vs. old team
Adan Montalvo would like nothing better than to beat his old team -- not
for revenge, but just because they are next on Texas A&M-Kingsville's
schedule.

Montalvo, the leading returning scorer for the Javelinas, returns to the
American Bank Center at 7, tonight to face off against Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi, which Montalvo played for two seasons ago when the Islanders went to
the NCAA Tournament. It's an interesting subplot in the proximity rivalry, which
strangely is an exhibition game for A&M-Kingsville, but the regular-season
opener for A&M-Corpus Christi.

Football Roundup 11-13

ACU, Buffs sit atop LSC with 10 wins
Editor's Note: Here are the final Lone Star Conference rankings by
Globe-News assistant sports editor Greg Jaklewicz, who covers West Texas A&M
football and the LSC. Congrats to ACU on its league title and to Central
Oklahoma and Texas A&M-Kingsville for turnaround seasons.

ASU football team looks to the future
"It was frustrating," ASU head coach Dale Carr said. "It was
frustrating and everybody knows. The quarterback position hurt us. Now I feel
like we have one really good quarterback coming back next year, Josh, and a
pretty dang good quarterback coming back. I think Michael has really grown a lot
in the last two or three games. He has really impressed me. He is tough."

Adams provides a kick for Wildcats
Matt Adams hasn't been in too many pressure situations this season.
In fact, until the Abilene Christian University senior kicked four field goals
in Saturday's 47-17 victory over Midwestern State University, he had pretty much
been relegated to kicking extra points -- a lot of extra points -- this season.
But that's the life of a kicker on a No.-2 ranked ACU team that has been blowing
opponents away en route to a 10-0 regular season and undisputed Lone Star
Conference title.

WT secondary remains confident
West Texas A&M's secondary finally is healthy. That's
good, because Central Washington, the Buffs' opponent to open the Division II
playoffs, will be throwing the ball.

A lot.
