Markham's big night not enough for MSU women

Midwestern State’s Nolisha Markham enjoyed a career game Wednesday night at Tucker Coliseum. The junior forward poured in a season-high 22 points and finished off her first double-double as a Mustangs with 13 rebounds before fouling out with 4:50 to play.

But it wasn’t enough to overcome a tough defensive effort from No. 24 Arkansas Tech as the Golden Suns ran away with a 82-62 win to improve to 11-0.

“If we put two halves together, this would be a different game,” MSU coach Noel Johnson said. “They capitalized on our turnovers and that’s what a good team does.”

Nicholls down to 10 in search

After receiving more than 40 applications for the Nicholls State head coaching job, the search committee has agreed upon 10 finalist and has conducted phone interviews, according to the school’s athletics department.

“We as the search committee were very pleased with the amount of qualified applicants for the position and believe we have narrowed it down to the best 10 candidates,” said Jason Dagate, search committee chairman, in a statement.

“The process has gone smoothly, and we have made a lot of progress, and we are excited about the number of great candidates for the position.”

The 10 finalists are: Jeremy ‘Bo’ Atterberry, assistant head coach/defensive coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State; William Hickson, assistant coach at Liberty; Hud Jackson, assistant head football coach at Central Arkansas; Kent Keith, interim head coach at Nicholls State; Jay Mills, head coach at Charleston Southern; Frank Monica, head coach/defensive coordinator at St. Charles Catholic High; Tim Rebowe, assistant coach at Louisiana-Lafayette; James Spady, assistant coach/offensive coordinator at Grambling; Charlie Stubbs, assistant coach/offensive coordinator at Central Missouri; and Charlie Weatherbie, former head coach at Louisiana-Monroe.

Recruiting Insight - Jonathan Turner (Jr.)

The 2009 Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers surprised a lot of people when they defeated a San Antonio team (O'Connor) in the first round of the playoffs. Turner's 85 yard punt return was a big part of the 24-10 win. It was their first playoff win since 2001. He followed that up with 2 catches against New Braunfels, including a 66 yard TD reception, but the Tigers were unable to muster much more offense against the Unicorns. And the best news for Tigers' fans - he will be back for his senior season in 2010.

Q - Jonathan, what an outstanding Junior season. What will you remember most from last year?
We had a really good group of athletes and we all got along well and i think thats why this year we got deeper in the playoffs than in previous years because we had that connection on and off the field whether we were in a game or at someones house just having fun. Ill remember that mainly

Q - Corpus Christi Carroll plays in a tough district, but the Tigers not only qualified for the playoffs, you won bi-district for the first time since 2001. How did it feel to knock off San Antonio O'Connor?
It was a great feeling knowing that we were the first team to finally win a playoff game in 8 years. Beating a team such as San Antonio O'Connor really boosted our confidence.

Q - Things did not go so good the following week. What was going through your mind as you walked off the field after falling to New Braunfels?
I felt as if we should have won that game. Minus the five turnovers we had, i think we were better athletically than New Braunfels but we just did not go execute the little things like ball protection. I was upset knowing that we could have easily won but im glad we got the experiance and we can only better our mistakes from there.

Q - Tell us a little bit about recruiting. When did colleges start coming around? Was it ever a distraction?
I have been receiving recruiting questionnaires since my sophomore year and recently have been emailing a lot of coaches for both track and football. It can be distracting if you let the attention get to your head. When your at school and your receiving letters from all the colleges a lot of your team mates can build your head up but you have to stay humble and remember to focus on your goals of getting that scholarship you want

Q - Who are the schools interested in you?
i have received letters from Air Force, LSU, Georgia, Duke, TCU, UofH, Stephen F. Austin, UNLV, Louisville, Akron, Texas A&M and a few other schools. But as of now i have only been in contact with the TCU, Louisville, and Texas A&M coaches.

Q - What schools are you most interested in?
I'm interested in TCU and Texas A&M as of right now.

Q - How big of a role do academics play in your decision? Have you decided on a major?
Academics is a key part in my decision of the school i will go to. I plan to get an architecture degree.

Q - What strengths do you have that will help you be successful at the collegiate level?
I'm confident and not easily influenced. I can go against what the crowd is doing and feel good about myself.

Q - Who are your role models, or the people that have helped you get where you are today?
My mother and Father have been my biggest role models. They may not be perfect but they have instilled the morals and values that i keep with me today.

Q - Any advice for guys that will be going through this process in the next year or two?
I'm not sure. I will be going through the next phase of the recruiting process.

Q - What teammates do you think have the ability to play at the collegiate level? Are they being recruited?
Jonathan Anderson and Ferrington Macon. Jonathan has commited to TCU and Ferrington is talking to the UTSA coaches and his commitment there is probable.

That's the mindset West Texas A&M men's basketball coach Rick Cooper wants his players to perform with against New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m. today in the First United Bank Center.

Not that Cooper's Buffs have been struggling.

Just the opposite.

Rebowe among Nicholls applicants
The interim coach at Nicholls State, the former coach at UL Monroe and a key assistant for the UL Ragin' Cajuns are among 42 applicants to replace Jay Thomas as football coach.

Thomas was fired Nov. 20 after a 3-8 season. In six seasons with the Colonels, his record was 27-35. The search committee hopes to have three finalists next week for university administrators and athletic director Rob Bernardi to consider, committee chairman Jason Dagate said. Dagate said there are so many good applicants that it's taking a while to narrow down the number.

"We are excited with the amount of interest this job has generated," he said.

Kent Keith is the interim coach at Nicholls. Other Louisiana applicants include Charlie Weatherbie, whose contract at ULM was not renewed after his seventh season and a 31-51 record, and UL linebackers coach Tim Rebowe. Grambling State offensive coordinator and offensive line coach James Spady also applied.

Other applicants included eight current college coaches and about 20 assistants.

The head coaches were Ron Roberts of Delta State, Don Carthel of West Texas A&M, Dale Carlon of Ohio Dominican, Lou Esposito of Saint Joseph's College, Alan Fiddler of Glenville State College, Danny Hugh Freeze Jr. of Lambuth, Paul Hamilton of Brevard and Jay Mills of Charleston Southern.

Dagate said the committee is most interested in applicants' approaches to academics and the university's desire to recruit local athletes. The university would also like someone with head coaching experience on any level and some college coaching experience.

Officiating: There is no excuse for the actions of Texas A&M-Commerce basketball player Ronnie Morgan on Monday night - spitting on a referee and kicking chairs. But from these eyes, that officiating job at the physical game between West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Commerce was pathetic both ways and did nothing to calm down the tempers of the players.

Lumberjacks rip Division II Tigers
There was no bah-humbug or holiday blues for Danny Kaspar after his team's performance Tuesday that leads up to the Christmas break. With his team holding a high-scoring Division II opponent to 68 points, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball coach had nothing but cheer to spread.

SFA held the Tigers' offense in check and got another glowing game from junior Jordan Glynn in a 102-68 dismantling of East Central Oklahoma at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

Midwestern State is the only remaining Lone Star Conference basketball team with a perfect record. The Mustangs matched the best start in school history by improving to 12-0 with wins over East Central, Cameron and Southwestern Oklahoma last week.

The LSC men have a 93-57 overall record so far this season, including a 51-23 mark in the South Division and 42-34 in the North. In league crossover play the South has the advantage, 21-14. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men's teams are currently 19-6 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 3-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

The LSC women are 69-47 overall, with a 33-26 mark in the North and 36-21 in the South this season. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 26-15 record over its North opponents. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women's teams are currently 18-8 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 5-4 against the MIAA.

In men's games played last week, the LSC had three players score more than 30 points, 19 over the 20-point mark and 15 double-digit rebounders, while 12 recorded double-doubles.

NORTH MEN'S OFFENSIVE

Williams led UCO to two league crossover road wins, averaging 20.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.3 steals and 2.0 blocked shots a game while shooting 56.4 percent (22-of-39) from the field last week. The junior guard had 20 points and nine rebounds in a 93-69 win over Abilene Christian, then followed with a 25-point, 11-rebound outing with five 3-pointers in a come-from-behind 95-93 victory over Angelo State. He had 16 points and six boards in the loss to Rogers State.

NORTH MEN'S DEFENSIVE

Williams keyed two conference crossover wins with big production on offense and defense. He had 23 of his 26 rebounds on the defensive end while also making seven steals and blocking six shots last week. The junior guard had eight defensive rebounds and four steals in a 93-69 victory over Abilene Christian, then pulled down nine defensive boards and blocked two shots in a 95-93 win over Angelo State. He grabbed six defensive boards and recorded two blocks in the loss to Rogers State.

SOUTH MEN'S OFFENSIVE
Craig Green, Midwestern State, Sr., Guard, Keller, Texas/Keller HS
Green averaged 21.3 points per game while leading No. 10 Midwestern State to three LSC crossover wins as the Mustangs matched the best start in school history by improving to 12-0. The senior from Keller erupted for a career-high 32 points including 21 in the first half of a 103-85 win over East Central on Dec. 14. Green netted 13 points and battled for a season-high eight rebounds in an 86-83 overtime win over Cameron on Saturday before scoring a team-high 19 points and dishing out five assists in an 89-70 win over Southwestern Oklahoma Monday night. For the week, Green averaged 21.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and two steals per game.

SOUTH MEN'S DEFENSIVE
Jeremiah Wilson, Tarleton State, Sr., F, Chicago, Ill./Hyde Park HS
Wilson led the Texans in rebounds in all three games, including defensive rebounds. He tallied 18 total defensive rebounds as he helped Tarleton to a 3-0 record last week. Wilson averaged 9.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in the three contests, including claiming back-to-back double-doubles in the wins over Southwestern Oklahoma and Cameron. He had 13 points and 10 rebounds against SWOSU and 11 points and 13 rebounds against CU. He had eight defensive rebounds against the Bulldogs and seven defensive rebounds against the Aggies. He also recorded four blocks (two vs. SWOSU and one each in the other two games) while having four steals as well. In the game against Cameron, the Aggies only scored six points against the Texan senior.

NORTH WOMEN'S OFFENSIVE
Jourdan Clark, East Central, Fr., Guard, Ada, Okla./Carl Albert HS
Clark averaged 14.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.5 steals as the Lady Tigers beat Midwestern State 71-58 and Southwestern Christian 75-49 to go 2-0 in games last week. The freshman guard shot 47.4 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and 77.8 percent from the free throw line.

NORTH WOMEN'S DEFENSIVE
Cristina Yarbrough, Central Oklahoma, Sr., Guard, Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe HS
Yarbrough helped UCO split a pair of LSC crossover road games, averaging 5.5 defensive rebounds and 4.0 steals a contest. The senior guard had 11 of her 13 rebounds on the defensive end, including seven in a 65-49 win over Angelo State, with five of her eight steals coming in that victory. Yarbrough also averaged 7.5 points in the two games.

SOUTH WOMEN'S OFFENSIVE
Brittnie Haley, Tarleton State, Jr., Forward, Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS
Haley continues to impress during the 2009-10 season after sitting out all of last year due to a recovering injury. She averaged 16.3 points per game on .467 percent shooting and guided the TexAnns to a 2-1 record over the week. Tarleton improved to 10-1 overall, giving this TexAnn team the most victories in school history before Jan. 1. Haley led the TexAnns in scoring in two out of the three contests this week, including her season-high 21-point effort in Tarleton's 81-56 win over Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday. The junior forward has been most impressive at the charity stripe this week as she extended her consecutive free throws made streak to 21. She missed her first shot at the foul line last Monday against Southeastern Oklahoma before rattling off 14 straight to end the game. She has been perfect since then, going 3-for-3 on Saturday and 4-for-4 on Monday as she carries her streak into the New Year. The Duncanville native has been am imposing threat on the boards as well, grabbing 18 total rebounds with eight of them coming in an offensive effort.

SOUTH WOMEN'S DEFENSIVE
Joni Unruh, West Texas A&M, Jr., Guard, Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo HS
Unruh is proving herself as a strong player on both sides of the court for the Lady Buffs. Her defensive performance in the last three games was solid as she tallied a team-leading 10 steals. Against Cameron, she grabbed six steals and added four more against Texas A&M-Commerce. She tallied eight offensive boards and 13 defensive boards for 21 total rebounds and an average of 7.0 rebounds per game. In addition to her defensive play, Unruh tallied 38 points, averaging 12.7 points per game and shooting 44.8 percent from the field.

Chase Neumann’s entire football destiny took root in a mid-game snap decision.

“He started off as a sophomore playing outside linebacker,” Dewey High head coach Chris Revard said about his All-State defensive lineman. “In his first game against Nowata, coach Henley said ‘He can’t cover the flats.’ I said ‘We’ve got to have him on the field,’ so in the middle of the game we moved him to defensive tackle.”

Thus, history was born.

Neumann’s selection as an Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State defensive lineman, on the East squad, breaks a loooooonnng All-State drought for the Dewey program.

The last Dogger so honored was quarterback Brad Woodard — back in 1991.

Several colleges are aware of Neumann’s on-the-field and classroom strengths.

Southwestern Oklahoma has offered him a fullride scholarship, and a handful of Ivy League and private schools are in contact also with him, Revard said.

MSU men tie best mark in school history
Southwestern Oklahoma State just seems to bring out the best in Anthony Moore. In Moore’s first encounter with the Bulldogs — on Jan. 10 of last season — he scored a career-high 19 points. Then in the championship game of the Lone Star Conference Tournament a year ago, the 6-3 guard had a double-double 14 points and 14 rebounds to land a spot on the all-tournament team and lead Midwestern State to a 66-60 win over Southwestern. The fun continued for the MSU senior Monday night in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Bronchos slip past Rams 95-93
The Angelo State University men’s basketball team will head into its week-long holiday break on a losing note. Despite leading by 13 points in the second half, the Rams lost to Central Oklahoma 95-93 in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Monday a the Junell Center. With the loss the Rams fell to 6-4 on the season.

Buffs impressive in rout of Lions
Not even Santa Claus can top the gift West Texas A&M men's basketball coach Rick Cooper received from his players Monday night.

On a night something rarely seen on a basketball court at any level - Texas A&M-Commerce senior Ronnie Morgan was whistled for three technical fouls, suffered a nasty cut to his forehead which drew a stream of blood, kicked two chairs, spit on a referee and was ejected from the game - the Buffs handed Commerce its second loss of the season, 92-71, in front of 771 fans in the First United Bank Center.

"I thought we persevered through a very physical and very hard-fought Lone Star Conference matchup," Cooper said. "You hate to say this sometimes, but blood on the floor is how this league is played sometimes. ... I was proud of the way our kids kept their poise. I've spent Christmas break both ways (after a win and loss) and it's lot more enjoyable for the kids to go home with a win. We beat a good team."

MSU women earn second straight win
Michelle Duff got her first start of the season Monday night for the Midwestern State women, and it paid big dividends for the Mustangs. The senior made 4-of-5 shots from the field and scored a career-high 14 points, helping the Mustangs to their second straight win, a 66-58 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State in front of 1,011 fans in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Rambelles unable to snap out of slump
The Angelo State women’s basketball team will have plenty of time to think about this one — and the previous three. The Rambelles lost their fourth straight game, 65-49 to Central Oklahoma in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Monday at the Junell Center, to fall to 5-7 on the season. The ’Belles won’t play again until Jan. 7 at East Central (Okla.).

“We are going to try to dish some things out and figure some things out,” ASU assistant coach Stacy Duffell said. “We are all disappointed with the way we are playing. We are all frustrated.”

College basketball Northeastern State sweeps ACU
The Abilene Christian women let one get away. The ACU men nearly stole one. It all added up to a Northeastern State sweep in a Lone Star Conference crossover basketball doubleheader Monday at Moody Coliseum. The Northeastern State women outscored ACU 21-6 in the final 5:14 to pull out a 66-59 come-from-behind victory and snap the Wildcats’ five-game winning streak.

“I think we started playing a little bit sloppy for about a five-minute span there,” ACU coach Shawna Lavender said. “You just can’t afford to do that. I thought we really got passive offensively and didn’t look to attack that well.”

Quick start propels Lady Buffs to
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs got off to a quick start and never trailed en route to a 92-63 Lone Star Conference crossover win Monday against Texas A&M-Commerce.

A crowd of 771 at the First United Bank Center watched the Lady Buffs improve to 10-1 as five players scored in double figures and every player who suited up played at least 10 minutes. WT's Jamie Simmons scored on a layup 11 seconds into the game and guard Holly Isaacs knocked down the first of four 3-pointers 41 seconds later for a quick 5-0 advantage.

Chad Washington Selected to Play in the 2010 Cactus Bowl
Texas A&M University-Commerce senior linebacker Chad Washingtonrecently became the third members of the Lions' football team selected to play in the upcoming 2010 Cactus Bowl. The Lions are one of four institutions - Grand Valley State, Elizabeth City State and host Texas A&M-Kingsville - that will have three participants in the game.

Washington will be joined by Lions' teammates R.J. Brisbon and William Green, who were selected earlier this month. Joining the three will be Rex Norris, who received the Bobby Fox Outstanding Coach Award in 2006, will serve as an assistant coach.

The contest will played at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University at Kingsville on January 8, 2010.

Buffs face Lions tonight
The hottest men's team in the Lone Star Conference basketball race will be on display tonight in the First United Bank Center. And it's not West Texas A&M.

The Texas A&M-Commerce Lions bring their 9-1 record - and five-game winning streak - against West Texas A&M at 6 p.m. today in LSC crossover action. It will be the final game for the Buffs before Christmas break.

Gerlich seeks consistency from WT
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs rolled through their first 10 basketball games of the season, dropping just one game to Southeastern Oklahoma State on Dec. 5. But there is still a list of things WT coach Krista Gerlich feels the No. 16 Lady Buffs (9-1) need to improve on before Lone Star Conference play begins in January.

"We need to work on consistency on both offense and defense," Gerlich said. "It's about knowing where our strengths are, lessening our turnovers and having better shot selection. We need to get better every single day. And we still have too many defensive breakdowns during the span of the game."

MSU looking to build on first conference win
The Midwestern State women picked up their first Lone Star Conference crossover win Saturday night, dropping Cameron University 59-46. They’ll try to make it two in a row tonight when they play host to the winless Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs.

Tipoff in D.L. Ligon Coliseum is set for 6 p.m.

Pearl River stars sign with Texas colleges
Pearl River Community College football standouts Jamison Hughes and Sam Robinson have signed on with Division I teams.

Robinson finished his two-year stint at PRCC with 32 catches for 355 yards and two touchdowns. As a freshman, he had eight catches for 158 yards and two scores, while this past season he had 24 receptions for 197 yards and a TD.
Robinson will suit up for head coach Sam McElroy’s Texans this coming fall, which finished their 2009 campaign at 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference.

Nichols looks forward to Cactus Bowl
He finished his collegiate career as the second all-time leading receiver in Southeastern Oklahoma State history. Now he has a chance, however small, for football to continue being the biggest part of his life.

Daniel Nichols just finished his senior season with the Savage Storm, and will be one of two Southeastern representatives at the Cactus Bowl, an NCAA Division II senior bowl game, on January 8, 2010 in Kingsville, Tx.

“I didn’t really expect to play in it,” Nichols said. “I didn’t make All-Region so I figured there were some guys better than me. But I got my invitation and I’m excited about it.”

ACU OL Washington named Little All-American
Abilene Christian offensive lineman Tony Washington was named to The Associated Press Little All-American team, which was released Thursday.

Washington, a 6-foot-7, 305-pound left tackle from New Orleans, La., was a first-team selection. He was the lone ACU player named to the team and the only Lone Star Conference player to earn first-team honors.

Four other LSC players were named to the team. Angelo State’s Calvin France, a senior defensive lineman, and Central Oklahoma’s Giorgio Durham, sophomore defensive back, were both named to the second team, while West Texas A&M’s J’Marcus Webb, a senior offensive lineman, and Eugene Sims, a senior defensive lineman, were both third-team picks.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: ASU's Fance named to all-star team
Junior defensive end Calvin Fance has become the first Angelo State football player to earn All-America honors in four seasons as he was named Little All-America second team by the Associated Press.

Fance becomes the 55th All-American in Ram history and the first since tailback Kyle Fox and tight end Justin Carter were both recognized after ASU’s postseason run in 2005. Fance led NCAA Division II with 14.0 sacks as a senior, one shy of the ASU single-season record, and will be playing in the Cactus Bowl in Kingsville next month.

Recruiting Insight - Jake Sims

This morning, we talk with Jake Sims. Jake was the starting quarterback at Corpus Christi Carroll the past two seasons, throwing for over 2,400 yards and 26 TDs and leading the Tigers to the playoffs both seasons. This past season in the playoffs, the Tigers defeated San Antonio O'Connor 24-10. It was their first playoff win since 2001. He was named second team all-district as a junior and senior. Despite his success at quarterback, Sims sees his football future at wide receiver. You can view his College Coaches Net profile.

Q - Jake, what an outstanding senior season, both individually and as a team. What will you remember most from last year?
JS - What I'll remember most about my past season is before the game when we would get ready for the game and my teammates tell me they were counting on me.

Q - Corpus Christi Carroll plays in a tough district, but the Tigers not only qualified for the playoffs, you won bi-district for the first time since 2001. How did it feel to knock off San Antonio O'Connor?
JS - It was a great feeling beating O'Connor, the whole year we faced a lot of criticism from last years class, and we proved them all wrong, and did something they'll never accomplish.

Q - Things did not go so good the following week. What was going through your mind as you walked off the field after falling to New Braunfels?
JS - That it was the best my boys can give me, we fought, but cant go back and change it. It was a good season.

Q - Tell us a little bit about recruiting. When did colleges start coming around? Was it ever a distraction?
JS - Schools came around the end of my junior year and no it was never a distraction, I was excited but humbled and knew my season came first.

Q - Who are the schools interested in you?
JS - Oklahoma Panhandle State, Henderson State, Clarion, Nicholls State, Texas State.

Q - What schools are you most interested in?
JS - Interested in Midwestern State as a Wr, ACU as a Wr, and Texas State is recruiting me as a Wr. OPSU and Henderson State has offered as a QB, but I am a better Wr.

Q - How big of a role do academics play in your decision? Have you decided on a major?
JS - Academics is a very vital role in my decision because I want to have a great education and never put my family in a bad spot. I would like to major in Physical Therapy I take pride in the human body, and all it can do with hard work.

Q - What strengths do you have that will help you be successful at the collegiate level?
JS - The strengths that I have been blessed with to play at the next level is great God given speed, very disciplined with an unbelievable work ethic, and tremendous athletic ability.

Q - Who are your role models, or the people that have helped you get where you are today?
JS - Keith Wagner the RB coach at ACU because he taught me the discipline and got me right in the weight room, and Justin Lucas ex ACU safety because he has been working out with me and putting my body in the best physical shape possible. Joe Pena ex A&M Kingsville QB, because he taught me composure and football smarts


Q - What teammates do you think have the ability to play at the collegiate level? Are they being recruited?
JS - Charles Coleman, our very talented RB. Ferrington Macon has committed to UTSA (and Jonathan Anderson just committed to TCU).

NATHAN WRIGHT: ASU had strong start to 2009
2009 was perhaps one of the most successful athletic years for Angelo State University across the board in some time. The Rams and Rambelles advanced to the postseason in five of seven team sports. They sent individuals to compete at the national level in two more.

They competed at regional tournaments in three sports and came within three points of the school’s first national championship in any sport since the softball team won it all in 2004.
There was plenty to cheer about in 2009 from the Junell Center to Foster Field to the ASU Softball Complex to San Angelo Stadium.

That is why this week’s column is Part 1 of a three-part, year-in-review series for 2009. This week, the column focuses on January through April.

Six Preseason All-Americans
Six members of the Angelo State baseball team were announced as Preseason All-Americans by the NCBWA Tuesday.

Senior second baseman Jason Morriss was the only Ram chosen the 17-man first team while senior first baseman/designated hitter Keith Towne was named second team. Senior outfielder Isaac Garcia, senior designated hitter/catcher Chris Adamson, senior relief pitcher Jeffrey Asby and sophomore relief pitcher Craig Blair were all named third team. The Rams' six honorees were the most of any team in the nation. Three schools, Ashland, Florida Southern and Southwest Minnesota State, each had four selections.

Null not discouraged by rough start
ST. LOUIS - Five interceptions or not, St. Louis Rams rookie Keith Null, a former West Texas A&M star, wants to get back on the horse.

"Yeah, I would love to get out and play again," Null said in his Texas drawl. "The more experience I get, the better."

He just might get another chance. For the final three games of this season, it's either Kyle Boller or Null at quarterback. That's because Marc Bulger is still on crutches three weeks after he was diagnosed with a fractured shin bone.

Zuvanich: NFL mining West Texas' small colleges
A quarterback from a West Texas college played in an NFL game on Sunday, and no, it wasn't Graham Harrell or anyone else from Texas Tech.

West Texas A&M product Keith Null, who like Harrell shattered most of the career passing records at his school, made his NFL debut with the St. Louis Rams. And although it wasn't a storybook performance for the rookie from Lampasas - he threw five interceptions in a 40-point loss to the Tennessee Titans - it was an experience Null will probably never forget.

Thomson named NSCAA/Performance Suburu All American
Midwestern State's Allen Thomson garnered second-team NSCAA/Performance Suburu All-American honors as announced by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America Tuesday afternoon.

The 6-4, 180-pound center back from Pretoria, South Africa started 14 matches this season to help MSU to a 13-2-3 record as the Mustangs advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason for the fourth-straight season.

Thomson anchored the nation's top defense as Midwestern limited the opposition to eight goals in 18 games for an NCAA Division II-best 0.43 team goals against average.
The Mustangs held the opponents to 6.8 shots per match with 2.5 of those falling on frame.

Midwestern has placed at least one member on the NSCAA All-America for four-straight years including Daniel Woolard and Brandon Swartzendruber in 2006 before Ahmad Ihmeidan made the elite group in 2007 and 2008.

More Honors For Miller

Alli Miller added to her impressive post-season resume Monday when the Central Oklahoma star was named a second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

A senior fullback from Norman, Miller earned a host of honors this year, both athletically and academically.

She was a first-team All-Lone Star Conference pick for the fourth straight year – winning league Defensive Player of the Year accolades for the second consecutive season -- and was a first-team All-South Central Region selection by both the NSCAA and Daktronics, Inc., gaining third-team All-America recognition from Daktronics.

Miller also earned Academic All-LSC honors for the third time and was a first-team selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Women's Soccer Team.

UCO went 14-6-3 in 2009, winning the LSC Tournament championship and qualifying for the Division II national tournament for the seventh time in 10 years.

College Coaches Network announces new COO and Football Recruiting Manager

Former college football coaches Ryan Held and Judd Remmers back on the same team at CCN

College Coaches Network announced the promotion of Ryan Held to Chief Operating Officer and brought Judd Remmers on board as the new senior manager for football operations. Remmers and Held are reunited after coaching college football together for eight consecutive years.

Matt Brandmeyer, general manager at CCN, anticipates good things from both Held and Remmers in their new positions. “These two guys have experienced the recruiting process inside and out, both as players and coaches, and bring a unique perspective to the business.”

Held is graduate of the University of Nebraska and received his M.S., Sports Management degree from the University of Tennessee. His coaching experience includes serving as the head football coach at SW Oklahoma State University (Weatherford, OK), head football coach at Panhandle University (Goodwell, TX), and interim head football coach at Peru State College (Peru, NE). Mr. Held has also held coaching positions at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville, TN) and the University of Nebraska (Lincoln, NE). His coaching and playing career includes four national championship football titles and five conference championships.

Remmers is a native of Auburn, Nebraska. He earned his bachelor's degree from Peru State College and his master’s degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Judd Remmers began his coaching career in Peru, Nebraska at Peru State College in 2000. He was there for two years helping the Bobcats to a national ranking and back to back winning seasons. Remmers coached the defensive line and linebackers during his tenure at Peru State.

Remmers spent the next three seasons at Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma. There, he helped lead the Aggies to back to back winning seasons. Remmers served as the recruiting coordinator and coached the linebackers at Panhandle State.

In the following four years, Remmers was at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Remmers was the recruiting coordinator, co-defensive coordinator and coached the linebackers for the Bulldogs. While at Southwestern, Remmers was once again a part of back to back winning seasons, a North Division Co-Championship, coached one All-American, and had four consecutive top 5 total defense finishes in the Lone Star Conference.

Mustangs 10-0 after beating East Central
It couldn’t have come at a better time for Craig Green Monday night at the Kerr Center. Green, a senior guard, poured in a career-high 32 points to lead No. 19 Midwestern State to a 103-85 win over East Central (Okla.) in a Lone Star Conference crossover play.
The Mustangs improved to 10-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

“We needed (Green) tonight when we couldn’t get things going in the first half,” MSU coach Grant McCasland said. “Craig carried us in a game that definitely wasn’t pretty. He took it to the basket and was aggressive. I’m proud of him.”

The LSC men have a 72-38 overall record so far this season, including a 40-16 mark in the South Division and 32-22 in the North. In league crossover play the South has the advantage, 10-8.

The LSC women are 69-47 overall, with a 33-26 mark in the North and 36-21 in the South this season. In league crossover action, the South Division has won 14 of 22 games.

Both LSC crossover and non-conference games are on tap this week before the Holiday Break.

In men’s games played last week, the LSC had one player score more than 30 points, nine over the 20-point mark and nine double-digit rebounders, while seven recorded double-doubles.

NORTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Jason Jones, Northeastern State, Sr., Center, Cahors, France
Jones had an incredibly productive offensive effort, where he averaged a double-double (21.7 points and 10 rebounds) in three Northeastern State wins. The 6-7 senior connected on 22-of-30 shots from the floor (.733), made 7-of-13 from behind the arc (.538) and missed just one free throw in 15 attempts (.933). He also grabbed 30 rebounds, including eight offensive caroms. He scored a career-high 28 points with nine rebounds in a 77-53 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Dec. 10 where he made 8-of-10 shots, was 4-of-5 from the arc and 8-of-9 at the free throw line. He followed that up with a 27-point, 13-rebound performance in an 87-76 regional victory over Missouri Southern on Dec. 12. In Northeastern State’s 99-37 verdict against Hillsdale College, Jones played just 14 minutes, scored 10 points and collected eight rebounds. He is the RiverHawks leading scorer and rebounder for the year, putting up 17.4 points and 8.6 boards.

NORTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Ronnie Morgan, Texas A&M-Commerce, Sr., Forward, Dallas, Texas/Paris JC/Louisiana Tech
Morgan had his second double-double of the season with an 11 point, 12 rebound effort against Abilene Christian. He also had six points and five rebounds and a steal in the win over Henderson State with a blocked shot in each victory. Defensively, A&M-Commerce held Abilene Christian to 39.1 percent shooting and 28 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Against Henderson State, the Reddies were held to 35.7 percent shooting from the field and 18.8 percent from beyond the 3-point line. In both games, the Lions outrebounded their opponent by a double-digit margin.

SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Antwan Mullins, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Jr., Point Guard, Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch Mullins led the Javelinas to a 2-1 week, including a 2-0 mark at home. He had 15 points, five assists and five steals in a 68-51 win over Texas A&M-International. He was the only player on the team to score in double figures in a loss at Northeastern State with 13 points, four assists and three steals in the game. On Sunday, he had 15 points, three steals, three assists and a career-high six rebounds in a 68-66 win over Incarnate Word.

SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Anthony Moore, Midwestern State, Sr., Guard, South Lakes, Va./South Lakes HS
Moore logged his second career double-double while leading No. 19 Midwestern State to a 72-42 win over Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday night at Bloomer Sullivan Arena. The senior from South Lakes, Va. matched a season-high with 14 points and pulled 10 rebounds. Midwestern’s sticky defense limited the Savage Storm to 10 first-half points which was the fewest allowed since Austin College scored as many points in a 28-18 MSU win on Feb. 6, 1968. The Mustangs forced Southeastern into 16 consecutive misses and nine turnovers during a 10:59 beginning in the second minute of the contest.

ECU handles Midwestern State women
Savannah Carver just couldn’t do it all by herself Monday night at the Kerr Activities Center. The sophomore guard scored 15 of her career-high 21 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a hot-shooting Casi Rawls as East Central came away with a 71-58 Lone Star Conference crossover victory.

The loss was the third straight for the Mustangs (2-6).

NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Jessica Hanna, Texas Woman’s, So., G, China Spring, Texas/China Spring HS
Hanna scored a game-high 22 points for the second straight game and helped the team snap a 12-game losing streak against Angelo State. She scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half as the Pioneers outscored ASU, 44-29, and picked up a 16-point victory. Hanna shot 70.0 percent (7-for-10) from the floor and 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from the three-point range in the second half.

NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jessica White, Northeastern State, Sr., Guard, Jenks, Okla./Jenks HS
White was Northeastern State’s best defender of the week, as she was chosen to guard two prolific scorers in games versus Texas A&M-Kingsville and Drury. One of the Javelinas top scorers entered the game averaging better than 11 points and was shooting over 45 percent from the floor but was limited to 1-of-8 from the floor, including 1-of-6 from the arc, for just three points and four turnovers in a 72-51 Northeastern State win. Against Drury, White and the team held the Panthers top scorer, who entered averaging 17 points and connecting at better than 58 percent on all her shots, to only eight points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field.

SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Cat Clay, Eastern New Mexico, Jr., Forward, Deming, N.M./Deming HS
Clay paced the Zias with a 22-point performance, leading ENMU to a 79-74 win at Cameron. She connected on seven of her nine attempts from the free throw line and hit five three-pointers. The performance marked the third time this season Clay has reached the 20-point plateau.

SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jamie Simmons, West Texas A&M, Jr., Forward, Houston, Texas/Trinity Valley CC
Simmons was a powerhouse against Southwestern Oklahoma, leading all scorers with 20 points and all rebounders with 19, marking her third double-double outing of the season. She also hit career high marks in both rebounds and points as a Lady Buff. Defensively, Simmons pulled down 14 boards and tallied two big blocks. She shot 53.3 percent from the field, with eight buckets. Simmons currently leads the Lady Buffs in points and rebounds, averaging 13.3 points per game and 9.0 boards per game. She also leads the team in blocks with five this season.

Former UH coach Helton finalist for Sam Houston job
Sam Houston State has named six finalists for its vacant head football coach position, among them former University of Houston coach Kim Helton, current UH co-offensive coordinator Jason Phillips, former Blinn College coach Willie Fritz and Klein Oak coach Dave Smith.

The other three candidates are New Mexico offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey, who led North Texas to four straight Sun Belt titles and former A&M Consolidated and Killeen Harker Heights head coach Ross Rogers. (Scoop Note: we know it says three, but we just post their words)

West Texas A&M head soccer coach Butch Lauffer has been named the NSCAA/MONDO Men's South Central Region Coach of the Year announced this past weekend. Lauffer is currently in his 19th season as the head coach of the men's and women's programs.

Two baseball standouts from Mississippi's Hinds Community College have agreed and signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University in the fall of 2010, according to Head Coach Scott Selby.

Saddler-McQueen Invited to Texas vs. the Nation
Texas A&M-Kingsville senior defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen (Houston/Forest Brook HS) has accepted an invitation to play in the 4th annual Texas vs the Nation All-Star football game held in El Paso, TX. The game is scheduled for February 6, 2010. The game will be nationally televised by CBS College Sports.

Saddler-McQueen earned Honorable Mention Lone Star Conference South Division honors this year despite being hampered with injuries for half the season. He finished the year with 30 tackles and 6.0 tackles for loss. As a junior, he was named the LSC South Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year. In his four-year career with the Javelinas he made 144 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and five sacks.

The Texas vs the Nation all-star game has produced numerous NFL players. Last year, 111 of the 116 that were on the roster signed an NFL contract.

Fance invited to Cactus Bowl
Angelo State senior defensive end Calvin Fance has been selected to represent the Rams in the 2010 Cactus Bowl, the annual NCAA Division II All-Star Game. The game is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, in Kingsville.

Fance wrapped up his short two-year career with 16.5 sacks, ranking him fifth all-time at Angelo State. He tallied 64 career tackles, 28 of which were solo, with 20.5 career tackles for a loss in 22 career games.

Cudjo Invited To Cactus Bowl
Central Oklahoma’s Jermelle Cudjo has been selected to play in the Valero Cactus Bowl, an NCAA Division II all-star football game that will be held here Jan. 8, 2010. Cudjo, a 6-3, 300-pound defensive tackle from Lawton, was a four-year starter for the Bronchos who earned first-team All-Lone Star Conference North Division honors twice and second-team accolades once. He finished the 2009 season with 58 tackles, including a team-high 12.5 tackles for loss with 3.5 sacks. He finished his career with 198 tackles, 38.5 of those for loss.

Cudjo is the third straight UCO player to participate in the Cactus Bowl, which started as the Snow Bowl in Fargo, N.D. in 1994 before moving to Kingsville and changing names in 2001. Linebacker Will Clewis played in 2007 and lineman Dustin Finn last year.

WT track teams open indoor season
The West Texas A&M men's and women's track teams opened their indoor season with some strong performances at the Kansas State All-Comers Meet on Saturday at Manhattan, Kan.

"The highlight of the day was our men's 4-by-400-meter relay finishing second to Kansas State," WT coach Darren Flowers said. "We had to fill some spots on the relay due to injury, so to come away with a second-place finish is a sign of depth on the men's side.''
That relay team, consisting of Xavier Bennett, Josh Braddock, Andrew Sanders and Taylor Johnson, ran a 3:25.0.
