The San Antonio Express is reporting that QB Devin Haywood (San Antonio Roosevelt) has committed to play for Incarnate Word. Haywood, a three-year starter, passed for 1,247 yards and nine TDs and rushing for 1,109 yards and nine more scores this season. Rough Riders coach Neal LaHue said he projects as an athlete for the Cardinals.

Atterberry finalist for coach of year honor
Texas A&M-Kingsville football coach Bo Atterberry is one of five finalists for the Liberty Mutual Division II Coach of the Year award.

“It is a great honor for the entire program,” Atterberry said. “I really appreciate the Javelina fans, coaches and players for all they do. This is a great program put on by Liberty Mutual and I am extremely humbled to be up for an award of this caliber.”

Fans can vote online at www.coachoftheyear.com from Dec. 15-29. Winners will be honored at a lunch Jan. 6 in Newport Beach, Calif., in advance of the next day’s BCS national championship game. The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award provides each winning coach with $50,000 to donate to the charity or charities of his choice, as well as a $20,000 grant to donate to the school’s alumni association.

Maskill a finalist for national honor
Midwestern State head football coach Bill Maskill was one of the 25 finalists announced Thursday for the 2009 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award — the premier college football coaching honor for excellence on and off the field.

The award, which is in its fourth year, recognizes a college football coach from each NCAA division for their work on and off the field and is decided from online fan voting at http://www.coachoftheyear.com/ and an elite selection committee of nine college football media and College Football Hall of Fame players and coaches. Three other Texas coaches have been named as finalists: Gary Patterson (TCU), Mack Brown (Texas) and Bo Atterberry (Texas A&M-Kingsville).

All-Star Challenge invites two Buffs
West Texas A&M senior running back Keithon Flemming and senior offensive tackle J'Marcus Webb have been invited to play in the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Challenge, a collegiate all-star game featuring players originally from Texas or who played college football in Texas against a team of the top players from around the nation.

The game, in its fourth year, is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2010 in the Sun Bowl in El Paso. Kickoff is at noon.
