Early run propels NSU to 62-point win
Northeastern State opened with a 16-0 run and cruised to a 99-37 victory over Hillsdale Baptist College Tuesday night at Jack Dobbins Field House. The RiverHawks are now 3-3 for the season and the Saints fall to 1-13. NSU will now look to Thursday night’s Lone Star Conference crossover game with Texas A&M-Kingsville at Dobbins Field House. Atterberry a Finalist for Coach of Year Award
Texas A&M-Kingsville head football coach Bo Atterberry is one of the final 15 NCAA Division II head coaches eligible for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award. Atterberry, third year head coach, led the Javelinas to the Lone Star Conference championship and an NCAA Division II playoff berth this year. He advanced to the evaluation process of the Coach of the Year award after picking up the most votes of any NCAA Division II coach with 8,800. The fan voting period ended on December 6.

During the evaluation process and analysis of the top coaches is made. Each coach must meet the Coaching Excellence, Sportsmanship and Integrity, Academic Excellence and Community Commitment criteria. And out of these eligible coachs, the top ten from Division IA, as well as the top five from Division IAA, II and III will pass through to the Finalist phase.

Where Are They Now: OL Jermane Mayberry
Yeah, OK, sometimes strategy just doesn't work out. For instance, in 1996 the Eagles planned to have their first-round draft choice, Jermane Mayberry, a 6-foot-4, 325-pound Division II All-America at Texas A&M-Kingsville, step right into the starting lineup at left offensive tackle. However, that plan was shelved during the preseason when a bout with pneumonia sidelined the rookie.

"It was pretty hard to go through," said Mayberry, who didn't see his first game action until midway through the season when he played on special teams. "And it was really humbling from a standpoint of you go to college and you have success and you just assume that success is going to continue and when it doesn't ..."

Mayberry was the team's only offensive lineman to play every snap in 1997, as he started every game at left tackle that season. However, he was shifted to an unfamiliar position the following season when he lined up at left guard. It was not a move he was initially comfortable with.

"I had never played guard," Mayberry said. "Everything happens a little faster inside, so it took a little while to get used to it. But I was willing to do whatever they asked of me. I tried to make the best of it."

Sam Houston State close to naming new football coach
Sam Houston State is getting closer to naming a new head football coach. Bearkats athletic director Bobby Williams would not comment on the names of any candidates, but The Huntsville Item has learned that a total of 12 coaches are in the running to make the list of three to four finalists that will be brought in for an interview.

“Right now we are progressing through the process of hiring our next head football coach. We are making sure we follow the Texas State University System policies that are in place,” Williams said Tuesday. “What I can say is I have narrowed the list to a group of 12 candidates we feel strongly about. I am conducting phone interviews right now with the hopes of narrowing the list to three or four who will be brought in for on-campus interviews. The release of those names will be given at that time.”

Chris Thomsen
Thomsen guided Abilene Christian University to the second round of the Division II playoffs in 2009, as the Wildcats went 9-4. In five seasons at ACU, Thomsen is 42-17 and has made four straight trips to the playoffs. The Wildcats won the Lone Star Conference championship in 2008, the school’s first outright title since 1973. Thomsen was also the offensive coordinator at Wichita Falls High School (2001-02) and was the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Central Arkansas (2003-04).

Guy Morriss
Guy Morriss has been the head coach at Texas A&M-Commerce for two years, going 11-9. He was the head coach at Baylor from 2003-07 and at Kentucky from 2001-02.Morriss played in the NFL for 15 years. He began his coaching career as the offensive line coach for the New England Patriots (1988-89). He was the offensive line coach at Valdosta State (1992-93) before joining the Arizona Cardinals in 1994. He also coached at Mississippi State in 1996, then was hired as an assistant head coach at Kentucky. Following his stint at Baylor, Morriss was the associate head coach for football development at Kentucky State.

Coaches recognize ASU soccer
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has honored the Angelo State women's soccer team for its achievement in the classroom.

The NSCAA honored all collegiate soccer programs whose team grade-point average is above 3.0 and the Rambelles received the award for the eighth straight year by posting a 3.56 GPA. ASU was one of four Lone Star Conference schools to receive the honor and had the highest GPA of the four. The other three LSC schools to be recognized were East Central with a 3.28 GPA, Eastern New Mexico at 3.23 and West Texas A&M with a 3.01 GPA.

Of the 333 women's soccer teams to receive the honor, the Rambelles had the 11th-highest grade-point average. Angelo State had the second-highest grade-point average of the schools honored in the NCAA Division II South Central Region, trailing only St. Edward's who accumulated a 3.62 GPA.

Zia Soccer Garners Sixth Consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award
PORTALES, N.M.- For the sixth straight season, the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team has received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for its performance in the classroom. The award was initially created in 2003 and awarded following the 2003-04 season.
