Buffs' air game KOs Neb.-Omaha
When West Texas A&M needed to score, the Buffs vaunted passing game answered. When Nebraska-Omaha needed its bread-and-butter - a punishing ground game - the most, the Mavericks sputtered.
In a close game between teams with contrasting offenses, the Buffs air attack prevailed as WT knocked off Nebraska-Omaha, 31-25, before an announced crowd of 3,032 Saturday at the inaugural Kanza Bowl at Hummer Sports Park. After stumbling to a 1-5 mark, the Buffs finished the season 7-5 - and with a postseason bowl title.
"It has been amazing. It has been hard to say goodbye to these guys," said WT senior running back and catalyst Keithon Flemming, who finished his college career with 42 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown and also had three catches for 55 yards and another score. I couldn't ask for a better ending. It ended up being a spectacular season."

Leaf to be offered plea deal in 2010
Randall County prosecutors plan to offer beleaguered former pro quarterback Ryan Leaf a plea deal after the start of the new year. But Criminal District Attorney James Farren said he's not yet sure what the terms of the deal will be.
Prison time isn't off the table for the former West Texas A&M University quarterbacks coach and men's golf coach who is accused of burglary of a habitation, seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance. Farren said that prosecutors have to balance the terms of a plea deal with the outcome of a trial if the matter went before a Randall County jury.
And public feedback has run the gamut.
"They find it disturbing that he was in a position of trust and, possibly, he abused that," Farren said. "Other people thought he deserved a break. We're going to make an offer that we think is fair to the victims and fair to the defendant and fair to the state of Texas. What would a Randall County jury likely do? I don't know if I know at this point."

Difficult goodbyes
ST. PAUL, Minn. - After getting swept in the NCAA Division II volleyball championship match, West Texas A&M players cried in the locker room.
Not because of the loss, which came at the hands of top-ranked Concordia-St. Paul, now the three-time defending champion. Tears fell Saturday night in the Gangelhoff Center because one of the best squads in WT volleyball history won't play together again.
"I've never been this close to a team before," senior middle blocker Melissa Harper said. "We were in the locker room crying because we're leaving each other, and they're starting all over again."

Hines earns all-America honors
ACU junior middle blocker Shawna Hines was voted third team NCAA Division II all-America by the nation's sports information directors and honorable mention all-America by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association.

Cole, Sang earn Cross Country Runner of the Year honors
RICHARDSON, Texas – Midwestern State’s Sydnee Cole and Abilene Christian’s Amos Sang were chosen as the 2009 Lone Star Conference Cross Country Runners of the Year. The awards were announced Friday following a vote of the league's head coaches. The Mustangs Cole was the female winner, while the Wildcats Sang claimed male honors.
Cole, a junior from Phillipsburg, Kan., claimed the school's first LSC individual championship with a time of 23:02.5, helping the Mustangs to their second-straight team title. She placed 15th at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional as she completed the looped six-kilometer course in 22:34.62.
Sang, who won the LSC and regional individual titles, finished fourth at the NCAA Division II National Championships, running the ten-kilometer course in 30:48.0 for All-American acclaim. The junior from Eldoret, Kenya, topped the field at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional in 29:53.23, more than a minute ahead of his nearest challenger and claimed the conference title with a time of 24:44 on the eight-kilometer course.

Ellis proves to be a big shot in Rams' win
Angelo State University junior Chris Ellis celebrated his 21st birthday with the two biggest shots of the game for the Rams against Cameron on Saturday. Ellis’s emphatic dunk with 6:55 to go tied the game and his 3-pointer with 2:44 gave the Rams their first lead since early in the first half as the Rams held on to defeat the Aggies 60-59 in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at the Junell Center.
With the win, the Rams improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in LSC crossover play. The loss was the first of the season for Cameron after the Aggies started 5-0.

Rambelles roll to win over Aggies
Sally Brooks’ 200 victories as head coach of the Angelo State University women’s basketball team have come in many ways. Saturday’s milestone win for the coach was an easy victory.
ASU remained undefeated at home and in Lone Star Conference crossover play with a 74-52 victory over Cameron Saturday at the Junell Center. The Rambelles improved to 5-3 overall, 4-0 at home and 2-0 in crossover play by making 12 3-pointers and having 11 different players score at least two points.
“I really, really, really could not be happier with the first half of the basketball game on both ends of the floor,” Brooks said. “We played great defense obviously. They only scored 15 points in the first half. It was our defense that did that so that was exciting.”

Six sign with ECU volleyball program
East Central University head volleyball coach Dave Thorn has announced the signing of six new players, including two junior college transfers, for the 2010 season. ECU, which will embark on its third season of volleyball competition in 2010, welcomes junior college transfers Tatiana Booth and Yakira Essix, along with freshmen Noelle Cope, Sarah Nelson, Danielle Essix and Kennedy Riley to the young program.
"I think we have a great recruiting class coming in. Obviously, we have some big shoes to fill (losing four seniors from this past season) in order to do a good job and compete in the Lone Star Conference and the (NCAA) Division II level," said Thorn. "We're hoping our junior college players can fill in immediately and we have some solid freshmen to give us a foundation for the future."
