Recruiting Spotlight - Reid Golson

Today we have Reid Golson, who just finished his high school football career for the Grandview Zebras. Reid had a big year, throwing for more than 3,000 yds and 32 TDs with just 8 Ints and gaining 1,300 yds and scoring 17 TDs rushing. More importantly, he led Grandview to an undefeated regular season and into the fourth round of the 2A playoffs, despite suffering an injury in the second round. The offense scored at least 31 points per game until they ran into Pottsboro.

Q - Reid, what an outstanding senior season, both individually and as a team. What will you remember most from last year?
RG - Individually I accomplished all of my goals except for winning the state championship. I wanted to pass for 2,000 yards rush for 1,000 and I wanted to get All-State Quarterback. As a team we did great. We were the best team Grandview has ever put on the football field and I can always say I was the guy that led them every game.

Q - How did it feel walking off the field after the Pottsboro game?
RG - That was the worst feeling I have had after any kind of game. I realized it was over and that was the last time I would ever play with my highschool teammates and friends. What made it even worse was that I had a severe knee injury that ocurred in the second round and I think if I was healthy we would have won.

Q - Tell us a little bit about recruiting. When did colleges start coming around? Was it ever a distraction?
RG - When other guys said that recruiting was stressful I never believed them until it started happening with me. You have coaches calling nearly every night wanting to talk to you and lure you to their school. Colleges started calling me at the end of the regular season. I sent out film halfway through the season and they would call a few weeks later. Recruiting was never a distraction for me though really.

Q - Who were the schools interested in you?
RG - Missouri Southern, Angelo State, West Texas A&M, Northeastern Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma, Air Force, Mary Hardin Baylor and Hardin Simmons. Mainly just schools from the Lone Star Conference.

Q - It was originally reported that you were going to attend Mary Hardin Baylor. What changed your mind?
RG - A few weeks ago I had my mind made up that I wanted to attend UMHB. After sitting down and thinking about it I realized I wouldn't have the chance to play Division 2 football again. I felt comfortable on my visit to Southeastern and the quarterbacks coach there really is a great guy. After talking to him on the phone numerous times he said I was way better than Division 3 football so I had to take advantage of the oppurtuntity he was giving me.

Q - How big of a role did academics play in your decision? Do you already know what you want to major in?
RG - Well, at all the colleges I was looking at I knew I was going to get a great education. With that in mind I then had to see if the school offered my major, which is Criminal Justice.

Q - What strengths do you have that will help you be successful at the collegiate level?
RG - I think my arm strength combined with my ability to scramble and make plays when the pocket breaks down will be my best strengths. I can also be used for running the option and other Quarterback run plays. I think with me being a dual threat quarterback, defensive coordinators in the Lone Star Conference will have problems scheming against the offense.

Q - Who are your role models, or the people that have helped you get where you are today?
RG - Since I have been a part of Grandview football my offensive coordinator has made me the player I am today. I have learned so much from him and he has developed my skills tremendously. Also, growing up I always used to throw the football with my brother and friends. I wouldn't be where I am now without them.

Q - Any advice for guys that will be going through this process in the next year or two?
RG - When coaches recruit you they tell you everything you want to know and everything that sells their program. Research the school you are looking at and pick the place you feel most comfortable for you. Take in all their positive information but also consider which schools have the least negative things about them.

Thanks Reid, best of luck to you.

ENMU Athletic Director Requests Reassignment

Courtesy: Eastern New Mexico University

PORTALES--Mike Maguire, athletic director at Eastern New Mexico University , has requested reassignment within the University administration, effective July 1.

After 22 years at Eastern as the volleyball coach and athletic director, Maguire will become responsible for athletic fundraising, special events and will teach.

Maguire has served as the athletic director at ENMU for the last eight years, and stepped down as volleyball coach in 2006 after guiding the team for 20 years.

He owns a record of 392-269 (.593) as ENMU volleyball coach. In 2004, ENMU was 25-9 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time and was a regional semifinalist. Maguire led ENMU to 16 consecutive winning seasons from 1989-2004.

He led ENMU to the Lone Star Conference regular season volleyball title in 1991 and to regular season and tournament titles in 1993. The 1998, 1999 and 2000 teams reached the semifinals of the LSC Tournament. He was named LSC Coach-of-the-Year in 1991, 1993 and 1995, and was chosen LSC South Coach-of-the-Year in 1999. The Zias earned the best record in school history in 1993, finishing 33-6 overall.

He was a basketball starter at Eastern from 1976-78, then went to Mesa State to finish his playing career and earn a B.A. in psychology (1981). He added a master’s in physical education from ENMU in 1984.

Maguire was head volleyball coach at Chadron State in 1985 and became ENMU’s head coach in 1987. His career record at both schools is 401-257 (.609).

As athletic director, Maguire accomplished the expansion of ENMU athletic teams in men’s and women’s soccer and the reestablishment of the men’s and women’s track and field teams. He also oversaw the construction of baseball and softball field houses, the ENMU soccer field, and the resurfacing of the University track. Under his direction, ENMU also added a full-time compliance position to ensure that ENMU complies with all NCAA rules.

According to ENMU president Steven Gamble, Maguire, along with the coaches, stressed academic success for Eastern’s student-athletes. The cumulative grade point average for the 354 athletes for the 2008 fall semester was 3.02, well above the student body average.

Other recent accomplishments included the athletic department being recognized by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports in a national publication for their community service efforts. In addition, the NCAA honored the ENMU athletic department with their inaugural Community Engagement Award for the Lone Star Conference for the High Hopes Benefit Dinner and Dance, which raised $6,000 for the restoration of the historic YAM Theatre in Portales. The benefit is being held again this year on March 14 in the Campus Union Ballroom.

A search committee, chaired by Faculty Athletic Representative Gene Smith, will conduct a nationwide search and will make a recommendation to Gamble on a successor to Maguire.

Gamble said, “Coach Mike Maguire has been athletic director during a time of significant expansion of Eastern’s athletic program. He has always demonstrated integrity in all that he has done, and we are grateful he will remain involved in ENMU athletics.”

Warrants issued for WT football players UPDATED

UPDATE
The use of a racial slur is what police believe spurred a group of West Texas A&M University football players to break into a home and attack a man.

Canyon Police Detective Shayne Mays said Arsenio Geter, who is a WT student but not a football player, went to the off-campus apartment of another student. The victim and Geter got into an argument and a racial slur was used.

He left the apartment and rounded up 25 to 30 WT students, the majority of whom police believe were football players. The players then went to the apartment and attempted to gain entry.

Mays said there may be more felony charges filed as the investigation continues. The investigation was delayed because the campus shut down shortly afterward for winter break.
--------------------------------------------------------
Eight West Texas A&M University football players have been suspended from the team pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.

Warrants were issued for Kyle Thomas, Hector Rodriguez, Brittan Golden, Jesus Fajardo, Eugene Sims, Brandon Hicks, Shaka Harris and Javaen Tillman. According to the Randall County Sheriff's Office, everyone but Harris had turned themselves into police.

According to law enforcement, the players were refused entry to an off-campus house party in November. When they were turned away, they allegedly forced their way into the home.

Rams to Play at Foster Field

From Angelo State Athletics
Angelo State University’s Ram baseball season will begin Sunday, Feb. 1, at Foster Field, Athletics Director Kathleen Brasfield announced Thursday, but with limited amenities for the season opener.

The university will have access to the field itself and the stands for all games this season. Concessions and the stadium’s bathroom facilities will not be available for the opening series, though portable restroom facilities will be provided.

Brasfield said ASU’s use of Foster Field has been complicated this season by the declaration of bankruptcy filed by the San Angelo Colts baseball team.

“We regret that fans will not have full access to all the amenities they have become accustomed to at Foster Field,” Brasfield said, “but we feel this is the best solution available to us at the moment and especially for our athletes, who have worked so diligently in preparation for another successful baseball season.”

In the interim, Brasfield said her department will work to restore the Ram game experience at future games to the level fans have enjoyed in past seasons.

The Rams will open the 2009 season at noon Sunday with a doubleheader against the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers. A third game is scheduled for noon Monday.

Not until Wednesday, Jan. 28, did ASU access the baseball facility for the season. The immediate challenge for the Athletics Department is getting the field in shape to play this weekend. First steps were to get water turned on and the power restored to the field so it could be irrigated and conditioned for play in four days.

ASU will assume the costs of utilities and insurance as well as any grounds maintenance expenditures necessary for games to begin on a playable and safe field in the manner required by the NCAA for Division II competition. The university, however, has not assumed responsibility for the condition of the stadium itself.

LSC Roundup 1-29

ASU bounces WT
Maybe the NCAA Division II regional committee knows what they are talking about after all.

Early Wednesday that committee opened eyes by ranking Angelo State fourth in the South Central region, four spots ahead of West Texas A&M.

Angelo State's hot-shot senior guard Lionel Brown made the NCAA look Einstein-like by Wednesday night.

Lady Buffs blast Angelo St.
The last thing West Texas A&M Lady Buffs head coach Krista Gerlich expected was a blowout win against longtime rival Angel State.

But thanks to a dominating first-half performance and an equally good start to the second half, that's exactly what happened.

In front of a crowd of 1,052 on Wednesday night at the First United Bank Center, the No. 13 Lady Buffs dismantled the Rambelles, 72-45, to remain atop the Lone Star Conference South Division standings.

''Angelo State came into the game struggling and I'd say they still are,'' said Gerlich.

Javelinas use big second half to zap Zias 73-66
Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball coach Scott Hyland says the Javelinas are a second-half team.

They demonstrated that Wednesday night, shooting 68 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes to hand Eastern New Mexico University a 73-66 Lone Star Conference South Division loss at Greyhound Arena.

Hounds drop sixth straight
The Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds (4-15, 0-4) hung around until the final two minutes but couldn’t drop the hammer on their first conference win Wednesday, falling 70-60 to Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-6, 3-1).

“I think ENMU came to play tonight,” said Javelina coach Pete Peterson. “I’ve been in the same position Shawn (Scanlan) was in tonight, trying to get your first conference win and its tough, especially in the Lonestar Conference. I thought his team did well.”

MSU not one of top 10 teams in South Central Region
Even though the Midwestern State Mustangs are one of the hottest teams in the region, they were not ranked among the top 10 teams in the initial NCAA South Central Regional rankings released on Wednesday.

The Mustangs have won 11 of their last 12 games after a slow start and currently stand with a 14-5 season record — 11-5 in the region — and are tied for second in the Lone Star Conference South with a 3-1 mark.

Recruiting Spotlight - Chad Tarhini

Tody's interview is with Chad Tarhini, quarterback for Tomball High School. Over the past two seasons, Chad threw for more than 3,000 yds and 20 TDs, while also rushing for more than 400 and 9 TDs. As serving as his team's punter, Chad averaged over 37 yds per punt. Chad was selected to the 13-5A all-district second team as quarterback, and to the first team as punter. In addition, he was picked for the All-Greater Houston Football team by the Houston Chronicle on the second team at punter. He will be visiting Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne this weekend.

Chad, you played in district 13-5A, arguably one of the toughest in the state. Do you think that gives you an advantage over someone who might have bigger numbers but did so against much weaker competition? or do you think that people might not factor that in at first glance?
CT- I think that the district I play in is one of the hardest if not the hardest. I do think that playing in a tough district like that is an advantage. It is an advantage because i play against D-1 caliber players and that's who plays in college. I have played against numerous people since my sophomore year that have gone D-1, those are the type caliber people recruit so why wouldn't I think it is advantage, right? I don't think that anyone can look over the improvement my offense has made from the season prior to this season and to now. Everything doubled and tripled in some categories, what more could someone ask for? I think that playing in this district and doing the things we did as a team is unbelievable and playing in a tough district only makes you better and helps prepare you for the future.

What are your favorite football memories from high school?
CT - Some of my favorite football memories in high school is the win against Spring this year, like every game we went in as a underdog and that night we came out on top. Also in the summer doing 7 on 7 we were really successful and it was a lot of fun. Also I think my fondest memories will be the time I spent with my team and coaches. I have never known or met anyone that worked harder the we did, and that is what we had to do. I have met some of the greatest people in the world through this game and will never forget them.

Where do you think your future lies at the next level, at quarterback, punter, or do you think you could do both at college?
CT - I think my future lies anywhere on the field. Whether it be QB or P I know that any way i could contribute to my team is a success for me. I do think I can play both in college, it is killing two birds in one stone so who isn't up for that.

How is the recruiting process coming along? What LSC schools have been visiting you? Do you have a favorite?
CT - I have been contacted by some LSC schools such as Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico, and Northeastern State. As far as favorites, it is anyone right now i don't have any specific. I would like to get to know each one first.

What are your most important traits that will help you be successful at the next level?
CT - I think one important trait that I have that will help me at the next level is my work ethic. I know that I will do anything and everything to get better, I would be there every day even voluntarily. I think that I am a leader, that I go out of my way to help someone, and give encouragement. Also I think that playing in a 5A high school has given some help, realizing that the town, coaches, and my teammates know their faith lies in my hands. Also I like running an offense being on the field and knowing what I can do and calling plays at the line.

Do you have an idea of what you want to study in college? How important are a university's academics in your decision of where to go in the fall?
CT - I would like to study Kinesiology, and minor in a teaching or a math. My ultimate dream is to be a coach at the college level or high school. I have fallen in love with the game and want to help out kids in their journey through life, because football isn't just a game. It is a life commitment, it teaches you much more then how to throw a ball or how to tackle there are many things that I would like to pass down to kids. As far as the academic prestige of a school is important because that is what will get me through life.

Thanks Chad. Good luck to you.

Rams baseball team faces hurdle at Foster Field
The San Angelo Colts aren't the only team locked out of Foster Field right now.

The Angelo State University baseball team is wondering if those locks will be removed in time for its season-opening doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist on Sunday.
-------------------------------------
The stadium was scheduled for public auction on Jan. 6, but that was delayed when United Baseball League owner Brad Wendt and United Sports Equities added the Colts and Foster Field to its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings in a Florida federal court.

That halted the sale of Foster Field, at least temporarily.

Angelo State University owns the land on which Foster Field sits and has said whoever buys the stadium must allow ASU access for its baseball team to play there, as per a lease signed in 1999.

The son of a preacher man
Marlin Cloudy knows a thing or two about overcoming obstacles.

The senior guard who has led Tarleton State University in scoring six times and posted double figures nine times in 12 games since returning from a broken foot, wasn't even supposed to have a collegiate career.

“I tore my ACL my senior year in high school,” said Cloudy. “I just thought that was it.”

Recruiting Spotlight - Kenneth Cluley

Today we have Kenneth Cluley, quarterback for Waco Reicher. Over the past three seasons, Kenneth threw for more than 4,800 yds and 39 TDs, while rushing for more than 2,700 yds and 49 TDs. He was twice selected as first team All-State, and was Dave Campbell Texas Football's player of the year for TAPPs after his junior season. Waco Reicher won the state title in 2007, and hopes were high coming into last season, but in week two Kenneth suffered a broken leg. Reicher struggled, losing 3 of the next 5 games, but once again hit their stride with the return of Cluley. They finished the season as state champions once again, beating Austin Regents by a 49-17 margin.
---------------------------------
Kenneth, you accomplished a great deal at Waco Reicher, both individually and as a team. Can you pick out one thing (or a couple) that stand out the most from your high school football career?
KC - One thing that sticks out the most is winning back-to-back state championships. That's every kids dream. And I got to experience it twice. Another is being the MVP of both those state games. But the last would have to be beating Grapevine Faith in '07 41-7 to win state after they beat us 28-6 at homecoming.

You suffered a broken leg in week 2 last year, and the team went 2-3 over the next 5 weeks. How hard was it for you to sit out and see your teammates struggle? Were you tempted to rush the rehabilitation process?
KC - Watching your own team lose is worse than anything I have ever experienced. Coach Wagonner, my head coach, told me seconds after a close loss to Cedar Hill that he believes its almost worse to coach a team who lost than play for one. Because during that game you are helpless on the sidelines. Ironically I did rush the rehabilitation process. I ended up playing the 7 remaining games with a fibula that had some calcium built up around it but was still cracked.

How did it feel walking off the field after that last game? Did you have mixed emotions?
KC - Walking off the field after my last game was definitely different. I spent 4 years around those coaches and even longer around my teammates. That's my brother-hood and I have to leave it. Its for sure a sad thought. But boy did we make some good. memories together .

What is it about you that will make you successful on the next level?
KC - I believe that I can make a difference at the next level. I have a competitiveness that sets me apart from others. I've been told that by many and I've come to believe it. I hate losing or being beat. I do everything in my power to be the one on top, the last one standing.

Have you decided on what you would like to major in? How big of a role does a university's academics have on your decision for the future?
KC - My dad was a coach for about 20 years. My brother is currently a coach at Lago Vista HS in Austin. I plan to study Kinesiology and become a coach to follow in the big footsteps my family has set for me. Academics is very important to me. I want to get a good solid education where ever I go.

How is recruiting going? What schools are you interested in, and who has shown an interest in you?
KC - Recruiting is going well. I have an over from Army and Navy. Air Force, North Texas, Georgia Tech, and Tulsa have all shown interest in me. Air Force more than the others.

Are any LSC schools in the mix? Do you have a favorite?
KC - West Texas A&m was in my house earlier yesterday. Coach Carthel and Coach Best were talking to me. Other than WT no other schools have shown interest from the LSC.

Do you have any advice for guys that will be going through this process next season?
KC - My advice I would give to next years class and so on is to start early! Make a highlight video now and start sending it out. Call schools you want to go to and don't stop calling them until they tell you to. Don't be shy. And also to attend summer camps. I went to 11 this summer. It really helps you get noticed and you get to meet the coaches of that school and see how they are.

Thanks Kenneth. Best of luck to you in the future.

LSC Roundup 1-23

The Beaumont Enterprise is reporting that Texas A&M Commerce QB/WR coach Kevin Barbay and former UCO head coach Chuck Langston are among the 35 candidates for the position of athletic director/head football coach at Port Neches-Groves. Langston is currently the special teams coordinator at Groveton High School.

As reported in the Beacon Media News, former Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M assistant football coach, Ben Noonan, has joined the staff at Citrus College. He will assume to offensive coordinator position for a team that was last in its division in scoring.

From the Mississippi State Bulldog website - former Northeastern State quarterback and assistant coach, Greg Knox will be joining Dan Mullen's staff, pending board approval. Knox began his coaching career at Northeastern State in 1988 as a graduate assistant. He was the wide receivers coach at Auburn for the past decade, as well as the recruiting coordinator.

Football Recruiting Notes
The Monroe News Star is reporting that Louisiana's Mr. Football, Blake Matherne, has been offered a scholarship by Texas A&M Commerce. In addition to being honored as the top player in the state at all levels, Matherne earlier was named Offensive Player of the Year on the Class 4A All-State team, Offensive Player of the Year on The Times Picayune All-Metro team, District 8-4A Offensive Player of the Year and Class 4A state championship game Most Valuable Player. He rushed for almost 1,300 yds and 20 TDs, and threw for 2,673 yds and 30 TDs while completing 70% of his passes.

According to the Cleburne Times-Review, Grandview senior Reid Golson, chose Mary Hardin Baylor to continue his playing career. Southeastern Oklahoma and West Texas A&M as well as other unnamed LSC programs were among the other schools showing interest in Golson.

Recruiting Update - Texas A&M Commerce

QB Ricky Beaty is transferring from Henderson State to Texas A&M-Commerce.

Beaty was a red-shirt freshman last season. In limited action, he completed 4 of11 passes for 70 yds and 1 TD, and rushed for 120 yds and two TDs, with most of the damage done against West Georgia.

As a senior at Wimberly High School in 2006, Beaty earned third team all-state honors as he threw for 2,800 yds and 30 TDs. As a junior, he played defensive back on the state championship team of 2005.

NY Jets coach in the headlines

For new coach Rex Ryan and wife, Jets seem another perfect marriage
As Rex Ryan kept telling stories and charming listeners Wednesday, Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum watched from the corner of the boardroom smiling and laughing along.

Both the owner and general manager looked like they were almost in a trance, completely smitten with their new coach.

Ryan's wife, Michelle, knows the feeling. It was almost 25 years ago when she first met Ryan on a double date with her best friend and Rex's twin brother, Rob.

"Is he funny? Yes," Michelle said Wednesday moments after her Southwestern Oklahoma State college sweetheart finished his introductory press conference in Florham Park, N.J.. "Off the cuff, he is hilarious. He was always very confident. He just exudes confidence in himself and his ability. He is not egotistical (though)."

Coaching Was on Rex Ryan’s Horizon From the Start
Before Rex Ryan became the Jets’ head coach, before he became a coach at all, he attended Super Bowl III with his family.

Buddy Ryan, his father, was a defensive assistant during the Jets’ only Super Bowl appearance, 40 years ago. Rex and Rob, his twin boys, were 6. The first sign the boys had aspirations to follow their father into the family business came on a Miami beach. While Joe Namath held court for the reporters who surrounded him at the swimming pool, the twins looked up from playing in the sand, mesmerized by the quarterback who would soon make good on his guarantee of victory.

“From being around football so much, they loved it,” Doris Ryan, their mother, said Tuesday in a telephone interview. “And so did I. We’re just a football family.”

Jets introduce Rex Ryan as new coach

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — A confident Rex Ryan sent notice to the rest of the NFL: The New York Jets will be no pushovers with him as coach.

"We want to be known as the most physical football team in the NFL," Ryan said Wednesday morning at Jets headquarters after being introduced by team owner Woody Johnson.

"The players will have each other's backs, and if you take a swipe at one of ours, we'll take a swipe at two of yours."

New Jets coach Rex Ryan was once a gangly defensive end for Southwestern Oklahoma University
Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan has accepted the Jets' head-coaching offer.

We decided to look back at Ryan's early life a bit today and found out that he wasn't always the imposing man who officially steps into the Jets coaching job at the formal announcement and news conference on Wednesday.

So we called Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where Rex and his twin brother, Rob, both played football from 1981 to 1984 under coach Bob Mazie.

Buffs take down Mustangs
How does the first place West Texas A&M Buffs sound?

"It's a great win," said WT head coach Rick Cooper, minutes after his squad knocked off Midwestern State, 67-61, on Wednesday night in Lone Star Conference South Division play and end the Mustangs' 10-game winning streak. "But don't go there (about first place). That's way too early to even talk about that."

Fair or not, WT showed the 1,120 fans at First United Bank Center an inspired man-to-man defensive effort that held Midwestern State 19 points below its season average.

WT puts an end to Mustangs' 10-game win streak, 67-61
CANYON, Texas — Clinton McFall hit a clutch trey from the left corner to ignite a 7-2 run in the final 1:17 as West Texas A&M pulled away for a 67-61 Lone Star Conference South Division win over Midwestern State Wednesday night at First United Bank Center.

“That ball grazed the backboard, but that’s where luck comes in,” MSU coach Jeff Ray said.

The loss snapped the Mustangs’ 10-game winning streak and is MSU’s first setback since falling 56-55 at Northeastern State on Dec. 15.

LSC Roundup 1-21

Lone Star places UIW in its South Division
When the Incarnate Word football team begins play in the Lone Star Conference in 2010, it will do so in the South Division alongside such established programs as Texas A&M-Kingsville, Angelo State and Abilene Christian.

To make room for the Cardinals, LSC presidents last week voted to move Eastern New Mexico to the North Division, creating two, seven-team divisions.

“I'm just excited to be in the conference, period,” UIW coach Mike Santiago said. “I don't care where we play. But I think the other teams in the South are excited about it, too. We have a chance to establish some pretty strong rivalries there.”

Chief among them likely will be the A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, who have won seven national championships and produced such players as Darrell Green and the late Gene Upshaw, both in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

UIW will begin play in August as a Division II independent. Three LSC schools — Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State and East Central, Okla. — are on UIW's schedule this fall.

Lady Buffs face Midwestern
West Texas A&M Lady Buffs' head coach Krista Gerlich expects nothing less than an opponent's best effort in any game.

She figures to get just that tonight from Midwestern State, a team WT hasn't lost to since 2004.

Buffs battle MSU

Although the Lone Star Conference South Division has pretty much just begun its 12-game season, tonight a prize awaits the winner of the Midwestern State-West Texas A&M game.

Like sole possession of first place.

WT, however, will likely have to play its best game of the season to grab a win against one of the nation's hottest teams in Midwestern State at 8 tonight in the First United Bank Center.

Division II Players Who Could Make an Impact in The 2009 NFL Draft
1. Abilene Christian RB, Bernard Scott (No. 37 ESPN RB), 5'11" 198 lbs.
Scott racked up 2,982 All-Purpose Yards and 34 TDs en route to winning the Harlon Hill Trophy (Division II's Heisman Memorial Trophy). Scott is a tad bit undersized for NFL standards (don't tell Darren Sproles or Maurice Jones-Drew) but he is a very fluid ball-carrier and rarely takes losses.

3. West Texas A&M C, Thomas Crowley (No. 17 ESPN OC), 6'4" 290 lbs.
Crowley headed an offense that scored 48.2 PPG, and has the perfect size and strength for an NFL center. He can still add to his already 290-pound frame.

4. Abilene Christian QB, Billy Malone (No. 27 ESPN QB), 6'2" 235 lbs.
Malone delivered another quality season as he threw for 3,213 Passing Yards and 36 TDs while maintaining a 189.7 Passer Rating. His play brings back memories of New Orleans QB Drew Brees - a pinpoint passer with good awareness.

Cody Blocker gets his first offer
In today's day and age of college football more and more teams are looking for QB's that can run. Del Norte signal caller Cody Blocker is one of those players. He had a big senior season and was rewarded with his first offer last weekend. Cody Blocker Profile

LSC Alums in the coaching ranks

New York Jets find their man
Former Southwestern Oklahoma Bulldog, Rex Ryan and the New York Jets are reported to have reached an agreement that would make the Baltimore Raven's defensive coordinator the new head coach for the Jets.

Ryan (son of Buddy Ryan) has been with the Ravens for the past four years

Rex Ryan Profile (link might not be good for long)

Both Rex and his twin brother Rob (Oakland Raiders DC) played football at SWO from 1981-1984. It was a relationship between Bulldog HC Bob Mazie and Buddy Ryan that brought the brothers to Weatherford.

Alice's Davis to coach Central High School football (ASU alum)
Alice head coach Brent Davis is set to be announced as the new head coach of the Central football team today, the Standard-Times has confirmed.

Davis plans to address his players in Alice early today and travel to San Angelo, where he is expected to be formally approved Tuesday night at the school board meeting.

This year's district title was the first for the Alice program since 1985. He was named the District 31-4A Coach of the Year this season.

Prior to his four years in Alice, Davis had been the head coach at 5A The Colony in Lewisville, 3A Sinton (where he advanced to the state championship game in 2001) and 2A Banquete.

His overall record as a head coach is 101-57-1.

Bobeck named NJCAA Coach of Year (UCO alum)
Nick Bobeck didn’t receive plaudits from his own conference, but the Navarro College football coach certainly grabbed the attention of the rest of the country.

The NJCAA Football Coaches Association selected Navarro’s Bobeck as the 2008 NJCAA Football Coach of the Year. Bobeck led the Bulldogs to a 10-1 record in his first year as head coach.

Bobeck started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he was an all-conference fullback.

Mack Butler Returns To OSU Football Staff (UCO alum)
Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy has announced the hiring of Mack Butler as OSU’s director of football operations.

Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin completed hiring for his staff on Friday, multiple media outlets reported. Running backs coach Eddie Gran, wide receivers coach Frank Wilson and secondary coach Willie Mack Garza Jr. will join the Volunteers, closing out a lengthy selection process begun by Kiffin soon after he was hired at the end of November.

Coach of the year: Mark Smith (TAMK alum)
2008 accomplishments: Led the Antlers through plenty of adversity, including the loss of offensive line coach Derek McKiddie and the midseason suspension of several players. ..... Tivy struggled defensively at first, switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4, but improved dramatically over the course of the season. The Antlers finished 12-3 and reached the state semifinals for the first time since 1988. ..... Key games included beating Steele 34-27, a 31-30 comeback against Clemens and a 41-24 victory against Beeville.

Ten years ago this month, I packed the Camry, sedated the cat and motored 2,049 miles (Google Maps reminds me) to the Pacific Northwest. Five months later, my wife joined me, deplaning at Sea-Tac with our 6-week-old son in her arms.

He's almost 10 now, and we added a girl to complete the All-American family. There's also the dog, two cats, two finches and five or so fish, depending on the day.

Soon, we'll all be back in Abilene, a city in many ways that I found frozen in time.

West Texas A&M football coach Don Carthel accused me of going to "work for the enemy," the bad guys being the mighty again ACU Wildcats.

Both comments, of course, were in jest and accompanied by good wishes. It's rewarding to have people miss you when you're leaving, not kicking you in pants to get you out the door.

Rams, 'Belles sweep provide excitement
The Angelo State men's and women's basketball teams won't play again until Saturday when they make an 96-mile trip north to face Abilene Christian.

The Rams and 'Belles can probably use a week without a game after what happened Saturday night at the Junell Center.

Burns, McFall spark Buffs to win over ACU
Abilene Christian guard Dante Adams was about to have his shot blocked by Nick Burns in the first half Saturday night when he suddenly threw the ball off the court about eight feet away from the basket.

Incredibly, the ball bounced up and swished.

Thank goodness West Texas A&M's 77-63 win against Lone Star Conference South Division rival ACU wasn't a game of H-O-R-S-E.

Expansion on the horizon?

Update: UIW to join Lone Star Conference
By John Whisler - Express-News

Incarnate Word has accepted an invitation to join the Lone Star Conference.

The university was extended the offer after a unanimous vote of conference presidents during a meeting Friday in Washington, D.C., site of the NCAA Convention.

“We’re very excited,” said David Jurenovich, UIW’s vice president for administration. “This is the culmination of a process that has unfolded over a number of years. It’s one more step in the progress and growth of this university.”

The school will begin playing football in August as a Division II independent. Three of the LSC schools – Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State and East Central, Okla. – are on the Cardinals’ schedule this fall.

UIW will become a full member of the Division II LSC on July 1, 2010. All sports, including football and basketball, will be eligible for conference and NCAA championships beginning that fall.

UIW expected to receive invitation to join Lone Star Conference
The University of the Incarnate Word is expected to receive an invitation to join the Lone Star Conference, Heartland Conference commissioner Tony Stigliano said Friday.

“Do I think they’re going to offer? Yes,’’ Stigliano said. “Is Incarnate Word going to accept? I don’t know.’’

If UIW gets an offer and accepts, the school would have a home for its fledgling football program.

Javelina Women's Player Juggles Motherhood, School, Basketball (with video)
The Javelina women's team has already won four more games than all of last season and much of that success is due to senior Lakeisha Jones, who's averaging 15 points and 8 boards per game.
For Lakeisha Jones, the past three years have been an absolute rollercoaster, beginning at Paris Junior College in North Texas.

"It was May of '06 and I had just signed my national letter of intent to go and play for Northwestern, and Coach Holland told me, 'Keisha, this is when the doors start opening for you'. He was just telling me how big of an opportunity it was to go to Northwestern, and so I signed my scholarship that day, graduated that day, then a week later, I found out I was going to have a daughter," Jones said.

For a lot of young girls that would have meant basketball was over, but not for Keisha. She took a year off, and during that time, current Javelina Head Coach Scott Hyland left Paris for Kingsville and brought Jones with him. "She had Big 10 and ACC schools after her.Getting her down here has been a great move for her and her family," Hyland said.

ACU opens indoor track season today
The Abilene Christian University men's and women's track and field teams open the indoor season today at the two-day Texas Invitational in Lubbock.

The ACU men have six individual national champions returning in seniors Camille Vandendriessche (decathlon in 2007 and 2008), Julius Nyango (800 meters in 2007), Daniel Maina (3000 steeplechase in 2008), Raymond Radway (400 meters in 2008), junior Jordan Johnson (400 meters in 2006) and sophomore Nick Jones (discus in 2008).
The Wildcats have 10 other Division II All-Americans back this season.

"I want our team to have a little bit of a swagger, and when we walk into a meet with those six guys and our other returning guys, we've got a swagger," ACU coach Don D. Hood said. "It's hard to describe the amount of confidence winning gives a team and its athletes. It's a contagious effect in that our guys who haven't had success on a national level are able to see those other guys work, and it rubs off on them. Winning and being around winners means other guys work hard and get better."

LSC Roundup 1-15

From the Newspapers
Mustangs shock ASU in OT
It didn’t matter that the Midwestern State Mustangs weren’t able to run the play they wanted to at the end of regulation — they still got the outcome they wanted.

MSU men win 9th straight
Earl Rabb wasn’t the leading scorer for Midwestern State on Wednesday night. Nolan Richardson, with 23 points, did that for the ninth time this year. Heck, Rabb wasn’t even the No. 2 scorer for scorer for the Mustangs against Angelo State. Craig Green scored 20 every one of them in the second half.

Even so, Rabb was without doubt the shining star in MSU’s 95-82 win over the Rams at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Amarillo's loss is Abilene's gain

Veteran journalist signs on as new ARN sports editor
The Reporter-News welcomed Greg Jaklewicz back to its staff on Tuesday, naming the veteran newsman the new sports editor.

A product of Abilene and two-time employee of the Reporter-News, Jaklewicz, 50, came to the newspaper after 1½ years as assistant sports editor of the Amarillo Globe-News.

There, he helped the Globe-News staff earn an Associated Press Managing Editors award for its 2008 football section, and he was named the Lone Star Conference’s sports writer of the year for his work covering the West Texas A&M football team.

Jaklewicz said he was looking forward to working with the Reporter-News sports staff.

“The staff is in place and I just want to be the go-to person that makes it run and let the writers do what they do best and go out and cover their teams and have the time to do that,” Jaklewicz said. “With my experience, I hope to be able to make some good decisions. I’ve always been known for being creative and my work ethic, so I think that I’ll put the time and energy into doing this job as well as I can to serve our readers in print and online.”

LSC Roundup 1-14

Win over Zias notches milestone win for ACU coach
Abilene Christian University women's basketball coach Shawna Lavender wasn't aware of the personal significance of Tuesday night's 73-65 victory over Eastern New Mexico University until her players let her know in the locker room after the game.

ACU outscored the Zias 44-26 in the second half as the Wildcats rallied to give coach Lavender her 100th career victory in the Lone Star Conference South Division opener for both teams.

"I didn't feel any different from any other win," Lavender said. "I was just happy to start conference off with a win. That was the most important thing."

MSU women open South play at home against Rambelles
With three wins in their last four games, and the one loss a one-point setback on the road, the Midwestern State women appear to have gotten things going in the right direction.

And it couldn’t have happened at a better time.

That’s because the Mustangs (5-9) will play host to the Angelo State Rambelles (9-6) tonight in the Lone Star Conference South Division opener for both teams.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Javelinas face tough foe in Texans
KINGSVILLE — Long-standing nemeses await Texas A&M-Kingsville's basketball teams when the Javelinas open Lone Star Conference South Division play tonight at Tarleton State.

A&M-Kingsville's men (10-5) face a Texans squad that owns 13 consecutive victories over the Javelinas. A&M-Kingsville last beat Tarleton State during the 2001-02 season, a 71-69 overtime win. The Texans are 12-3 and have won six consecutive ballgames.

The Javelinas' women (10-5), meanwhile, haven't beaten the 9-6 TexAnns since the 2002-03 season, a 70-64 victory. That streak spans eight games. A&M-Kingsville's women, however, have won six of their past seven games and have posted double-digit victories for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The Javs lead the LSC in free-throw shooting, connecting on 77.8 of their attempts.
