LSC Football Weekly Release

Complete Release

Players of the Week
Co-North Offensive
Marcus Johnson, East Central, Jr., Quarterback, Abilene, Texas/Abilene
Johnson broke his own school record by passing for 426 yards to go along with two touchdowns in the Tigers' 55-49 overtime victory over NSU. Johnson broke his previous mark of 387 that he set last season in a loss to NSU. Johnson fired TD passes of 68 and 36 yards to Justin Goolsby as he was 28-of-46 through the air (60.8 percent) with one interception.

Ryan Gallimore, Central Oklahoma, Jr., Wide Receiver, Okmulgee, Okla./Okmulgee
Gallimore caught three passes for 94 yards in UCO's 21-13 win over A&M-C, with two big plays sparking the Bronchos. He caught a 44-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give the Bronchos a 14-6 lead, then had a 49-yard reception in the third period to set up UCO's clinching score. It was the two longest pass plays of the season for the Bronchos.

Co-North Defensive
Brandon Hopstein, East Central, Sr., Def. End, Seminary, Miss./Seminary/Jones County CC
Hopstein recorded three tackles for losses of 16 yards, including a quarterback sack which resulted in an 11-yard loss and forced fumble in ECU's 55-49 overtime win over NSU. Hopstein's sack and forced fumble led to teammate Maurice Lanclos returning a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown just before halftime.

K.C. Asiodu, Central Oklahoma, Sr., Linebacker, Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala
Senior linebacker spearheaded UCO's defensive efforts in a 21-13 win over A&M-C. Asiodu made 10 tackles, including three for loss, while also intercepting a pass and breaking up another. The Bronchos limited the Lions to 172 total yards in picking up their first win of the season.

Co-North Special Teams
Tyrone Gibbs, East Central, Sr., Kick Returner, Wylie, Texas/Wylie/Trinity Valley JC
Gibbs had 163 all-purpose yards in ECU's 55-49 overtime victory over NSU. He returned three kickoffs for 112 yards, including one 47-yarder, and had one punt return for 10 yards. He also caught three passes for 41 yards, including one 20-yarder.

Jerome Hewitt, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Jr., KR, Gainesville , Texas/Gainesville
Hewitt racked up an impressive 173 yards on just four punt returns, despite SOSU falling to FCS opponent Northwestern State (La.). He averaged an impressive 43.3 yards per return, including a long return of 76 yards. His two longest returns, 76 and 65, set up SOSU's only two scores of the game, both passing touchdowns.

South Offensive
Keith Null, West Texas A&M, Sr., quarterback, Lampasas, Texas/Lampasas
Null recorded his first 500+ passing yard outing of his career (and his fifth 300+ passing yard outing of the season) at TAMUK, completing 35-of-49 for 545 yards and four TDs. At one point (encompassing the second and early-third quarters), Null was riding a string of 19 consecutive pass completions. Included in that total was a career-long 97-yard TD pass to Charly Martin on the first play from scrimmage to open the second half.

South Defensive
Aston Whiteside, Abilene Christian, R-Fr., Defensive End, Vernon, Texas/Vernon
Whiteside continued his dominating early-season play in Saturday night's 56-11 win over ENMU as he racked up four tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one quarterback hurry and one fumble return for a touchdown. His sack, strip, recovery and return for a touchdown late in the first quarter gave ACU a 21-0 lead on its way to a 56-11 win over ENMU. The Wildcats -- who did not have a defensive touchdown in 2007 -- had two more defensive scores Saturday night and now have five on the season, all in the last three games. Whiteside has two of those touchdowns - both on fumble returns - and he has recovered a fumble in each of ACU's last three games.

Co-South Special Teams
Matt Adams, Abilene Christian, Sr., Placekicker, Abilene, Texas/Abilene
Adams was 8 for 8 on PATs in Saturday night's win, the sixth time in his career that he has hit at least eight PATs in a game. Adams' eight PATs against ENMU give him 169 (162 conversions) for his career, which breaks the LSC's all-time record of 161 set from 1992-95 by former TAMUK placekicker John Cortez. Adams also broke the LSC record for career PAT conversions, which was 154 and was also held by Cortez.

Jabir Perkins, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Sr., DB/KR, Dallas, Texas/Irving Nimitz
He provided one of the most explosive kick returning games in Javelina history against WTAMU. His day started innocuously as he had 29 and 14-yard returns on his first two chances. With the Hogs trailing 45-14 in the third quarter, he returned a kick 64 yards to the WT 16-yard line that set up a touchdown for the Javs. Then, in the fourth the Buffs decided to test Perkins again and they would regret the decision. He returned the kick 91 yards for a touchdown as he broke numerous tackles and received excellent blocking on the play. It was the first Javelina kick off return for a touchdown since Derrick Foster returned a kick 100 yards against ENMU on October 30, 1999. It also broke a record for most kick off return yards in a game (198). Perkins is averaging 38.1 yards per kick off return which would be a school record if he maintains his average.

Daily football roundup 9-29

Buffs avoid road letdown

By Greg Jaklewicz

West Texas A&M coach Don Carthel tore up his pregame speech that invoked the Alamo, which his football team had toured the day before.

Instead, Carthel talkJed about Southern California, the No. 1 Division I team that lost, 27-21, to Oregon State in Corvalis, Ore. Upsets happen, he told his team. Don't get upset.

Despite making a long road trip (668 miles), playing before one of the most enthusiastic crowds in the Lone Star Conference and quickly falling behind 7-0, the No. 6 Buffs didn't go the way of Southern Cal, Georgia, Florida and six other ranked D-I teams that were beaten last week.

Javs look to built on defeat
By George Vondracek

KINGSVILLE -- Obvious as it was painful, Mike Martinez posed the question before it was asked late Saturday after the track meet that was West Texas A&M's 55-35 football victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville.

"Why can't we come out and play the whole game like we did in the second half?" A&M-Kingsville's senior linebacker mused.

Good query. Ascertaining the answer during the course of the final six ballgames of the season will determine whether the Javelinas are indeed on the rebound with their program or simply are treading water.

Late 64-yard bomb lifts Tarleton to unlikely win

By Brad Keith

It was over, or so it seemed.

Even after stopping Southwestern Oklahoma State on fourth and short, Tarleton State’s chances of remaining undefeated looked bleak.

Tarleton had the ball with only 25 seconds remaining, trailed 21-17, and stood at their own 36 yard line.

Then, junior receiver Eric Foreman rose above the Southwestern defense to catch a deep ball, and eluded the only Bulldog with a chance of stopping him for a 64-yard touchdown with only 13 seconds on the clock, lifting the Texans to a 24-21 road win that came under the most unlikely set of circumstances at Milam Stadium in Weatherford, Okla. Saturday.

UCO wraps up Lions for first win of the year

By Jeff Harrison

Central Oklahoma head coach Tracy Holland was all smiles as he walked off the field at Wantland Stadium Saturday night. But then again so was the entire UCO football team, who pulled out their first win of the season, a 21-13 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce.

“I’m so excited for this football team, they have played the schedule from hell basically, and they have kept the faith, they kept working, and kept getting better from week to week,” Holland said. “So to play the No. 1 seed in the North division and beat them is just a huge win for us, we’re very excited.”

Shawn Williams: Securing the Cotton Bowl's future

On a sunny and mild afternoon – a day that would have been great for football – the city of Dallas and Mayor Tom Leppert unveiled a new and improved version of the historic Cotton Bowl.

I walked away impressed by the wider concourses, expanded media area, club-level seating and toilets that actually flushed (yes, I checked). But any mention of the Cotton Bowl since has been met with one word: Cowboys. It's as if residents expected Dallas to throw in the towel when America's Team chose to make its move further west.

Blocked field goal denies NSU first win
ADA — Northeastern Sate University’s football team probably can’t have a more frustrating loss than the one it suffered against East Central in the Lone Star Conference North Division opener for both teams at Norris Field on Saturday.

A 37-yard field goal attempt by Jared Homer was blocked by Charlie Burks and Ryan Madison got the loose ball on a lateral from Dionte’ Dean and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown as the Tigers toppled the RiverHawks 55-49.

NSU blows past Southeastern Oklahoma

NATCHITOCHES — Not only did the Northwestern State Demons desperately need a win Saturday. They needed it to be convincing.

Their opponent, Division II Southeastern Oklahoma State, already had lopsided losses against Abilene Christian (59-10) and Tarleton State (51-10) this season.

Thanks to the Demons, the Savage Storm got another one.

Game of the Year #1

#2 West Texas A&M (4-0) at #5 Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-1)

The first Game of the Year features a matchup of teams that have won the last 7 LSC Championships. The Buffaloes are right about where everyone expected them to be, undefeated, near the top nationally in offense and with a solid defense. The Javelinas, on the other hand, seem to be ahead of schedule. Almost everyone expected them to be improved, but after an opening game loss at North Dakota, TAMK blew through three LSC North games, all on the road. This will be their home opener.

West Texas A&M
WTAM Game Notes
The Buffaloes have been known in recent years for a potent offense. This year is no different, as WT is second in the LSC in both scoring (47 pts) and total offense (529 yds). Keith Null picked up where he left off last year, and is on pace to become the Buffaloes all-time passing yardage leader. He is completing 69% of his passes for 354 yds a game, and has 13 TD passes to just 3 Ints. His favorite targets have been Charly Martin (24-408 5 TDs) and Carl Johnson (20-294 1 TD). Martin could become the all-time WT leader in receiving yards this weekend (he trails Brad Bailey by 28 yds) and could surpass Bailey in career receptions by the end of the year. Null spreads the ball around well - 3 other players have double digit receptions and 6 others have TD receptions. Keithon Flemming is the leading rusher, with 334 yards and 5 TDs. Kelvin Thompson and Wayne McKnight are quality backups. The offensive line, led by senior Tommy Crowley, Daniel Sherwood and newcomer J'Marcus Webb, have allowed just 5 sacks, and the run blocking has resulted in WT averaging 5.5 yds per carry.

The defense was expected to be much improved with a lot of returning players, and the addition of high profile talent on the defensive line. Dexter Manley II, Broderick Marshall and Eugene Sims anchor the line, backed up by Marvin Wash, Marcus Rowe and Brandon Swain (an All-American in 2007). They have combined for 5.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for losses. The linebackers are led by All-American Jared Brock. Joining him are Eldon Grimslid, Max Steward, Anthony Scott and Mark Ford. Darnell Johnson, Cashmin Thomas, Kyle Seals, and Braelon Davis are the starters in the secondary, but Tae Evans, Curtis Jefferson, Keyon Kiles, and Arseel Shakoor have provided quality playing time as well.

Texas A&M-Kingsville
There has been a lot of talk about Billy Garza, the transfer from Illinois - and it has been well placed. The senior has thrown for 997 yds, with 8 TDs and 3 Ints, but a completion rate of just 51%. He has shown improvement each game. Jereko Taylor is the leading receiver with 22 catches for 417 yds and 5 TDs. Three other Javelina receivers have double digit receptions as well. The running game has been a surprise averaging 151 yds a game (compared to under 100 last year). No one running back stands out - instead it has been a group effort with no player averaging 40 yds per game. The offensive line has played well, allowing just 3 sacks through 4 games. Juniors Markeith Wesley and Jorge Guerra, have started together since they were freshmen, Soph Tim Byerly is starting at center for the second year, while newcomer Michael Mosmeyer and red-shirt freshman Daniel Sharpe have done well on the other side. Overall the offense is averaging 35 pts (4th in the LSC) and 463 yds (3rd) per game.

A year after allowing 414 yards and 31.5 pts per game, the TAMK defense appears to be greatly improved. Even with North Dakota scoring 40 points in the season opener, the defense is allowing jsut 18.5 pts per game and only 298 yds. The run defense has been especially stingy, holding the opposition to just 56 yds per game and under 2 yds per carry. The defensive line, led by Tyrell Herndon, Jimmy Lugo, Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, Jeff Edwards and Dondi Cooks has combined for 6 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. Herndon even has an interception that he returned for 40 yds to his credit. Mike Martinez and Arlen Childress are the teams starters at linebacker and the leading tacklers. The secondary has gotten contributions from a lot of players (8 of teams top 13 tacklers). Jabir Perkins has had an immediate impact with 3 Ints and is third on the team in tackles.

Game Outlook
Just looking at the numbers the teams seem pretty evenly matched - high power offenses and solid defenses. They are both undefeated against D2 teams and both handled their LSC North foes handily. The Buffaloes have been better at third down conversions on offense and defense. The Javelinas are tied for the LSC lead in turnover margin. Special teams are split, with WT sporting better kick and punt return averages, but TAMK with a better FG percentage. Red zone offense is a slight edge to the Buffs, but red zone defense has been better for the Javs. One area where the Buffaloes have a clear edge is experience - they are loaded with playoff veterans. The Javelinas have just a few players from their last winning season. We'll go with that experience - West Texas in a close one 35-28.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coach Atterberry on West Texas:

I have a lot of respect for Coach Carthel, his staff, players, and what they
have been able to accomplish. There is a reason they are the defending
champions and continue to play at a high level. They are very consistent
and show up every Saturday ready to play 60 minutes.

Coach Atterberry on the Javelinas:

Our players have focused and continued to get better each week and I am proud of them for that. They understand we still have a lot of work to do and know
it will take a great deal of discipline to accomplish our goals.

Daily Football Roundup (9-26)

Taylor finally gets in the game

By George Vondracek
KINGSVILLE -- This time last year, Jareko Taylor was a bystander.

Just months after bursting on the Texas A&M-Kingsville football scene with a record-setting season, Taylor was relegated to the sidelines thanks to academic difficulties. It wasn't a pleasant feeling for the receiver from Detroit.

"Oh, man. Just seeing the guys have fun in the games, I didn't like that very much," Taylor said. "All 365 days when I had to sit out, I just that feeling of not being out there when I know I should have been. I was discouraged with myself."

Taylor weathered that 3-8 season in 2007 along with the rest of the Javelinas, enduring it through prayer and daily telephone calls to his parents back in Michigan. He finally got his grades in line. Now, Taylor is one of A&M-Kingsville's more potent weapons and is on pace to duplicate and surpass his shining 2006 season.

Through the first four games of the season, the 6-foot Taylor ranks 18th among NCAA Division II players with an average of 104.3 receiving yards per game. He has posted successive 100-yard receiving efforts in the past two ballgames, giving him seven for his career.

Javelina Notebook: 09.26.08

Second-year Texas A&M-Kingsville football coach Bo Atterberry would be feeling a lot better about his ballclub if it weren't for the staggering number of penalties. In the last two ballgames alone, the Javelinas have been penalized 29 times for 211 yards. In perspective, Central Oklahoma and Northeastern (Okla.) State combined for 444 yards of offense in those outings, leaving Atterberry scratching his head.

"We talked about the penalties and all after the game. As usual, we did some of them and some of them might have been questionable. But that's part of the game," Atterberry said. "The reality of it is they go on the stat sheet, so we're charged for them. You've got to eliminate those things.

No. 16 Texans take undefeated record to Southwestern
By Brad Keith

No. 18 Tarleton State puts its undefeated mark of 4-0 on the line in Weatherford, Okla. Saturday when the Texans close out LSC crossover play against 1-3 Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Schools from Oklahoma have been victims of each of Tarleton's wins this season, but Head Coach Sam McElroy warns the Bulldogs, which stayed within eight points of No. 6 West Texas A&M until late in the third period last week, are improving, and are likely the best team the Texans have played this season.

“Last week, they kind of changed their mentality offensively and started pounding the ball,” McElroy said of the Bulldogs. “They had some success with it against West Texas so I couldn't imagine them not trying it again this week. The improvement they showed from week three to week four of the season was pretty impressive.” Now, especially with the WT game to build on and playing back at home at Milam Stadium, McElroy says the Bulldogs will be tough to put away.

NCAA Division I an option for UIW

By John Whisler

He's the mastermind, the unquestioned leader of the school's unprecedented growth in recent years.

So when University of the Incarnate Word president Louis Agnese, awash in pride over his new football team, suggests taking UIW's athletics programs into NCAA Division I by 2012, it's not a surprise.

“We're not that little college at the corner of Broadway and Hildebrand anymore,” he said.
UIW and Division I?

Agnese says it's possible, but only as a last resort if the school fails to gain admittance to the Division II Lone Star Conference.

NSU looks to spoil East Central's party

By Travis Metcalf

The Northeastern State University football team plays its homecoming game on Oct. 4, but until then the RiverHawks will be the homecoming opponent when they travel to East Central on Saturday afternoon.

The RiverHawks enter this contest 0-4 after losing, 42-14, against Texas A&M Kingsville. NSU coach Kenny Evans said he completely understands why his team was picked to be the homecoming opponent.

“People are scheduling us for a reason,” Evans said. “Nobody likes to lose their homecoming game and I’m sure that has a lot to do with their scheduling.”Evans feels his team has its best chance of the season of picking up a win on Saturday.

Game Notes and Picks (9-27)

Recap of last week's games...

ASU over ECU 34-24 (Prediction 28-10) - Rams didn't follow the script, but won anyway.
ACU over SOSU 59-10 (45-17) - nothing Savage Storm could do. Is anyone in the country playing better than ACU?
WTAM over SWO 42-20 (45-17) - Bulldogs kept the game close for most of three quarters before WT pulled away.
TSU over UCO 42-17 (38-10) - kickoff return right before half took away UCO momentum.
TAMC over ENMU 38-14 (17-14) - Thorton finishes game 6 receiving yards shy of LSC record, but ties for TD catches
TAMK over NSU 42-14 (28-10) - almost ready to say the Javs are back; we'll see after this week.
MSU over Newberry 24-10 (13-24) - Missed this one, but glad for the Mustangs.

For the week 6-1, for the season 28-3

-----------------------------------------

#12 Northeastern State (0-4) at #13 East Central (0-4)
As expected, the defense is ahead of the offense for the Riverhawks. While on the surface, 27 pts
and 379 yds per game doesn't look impressive, the first four opponents for Northeastern State have a combined 12-1 record vs. D2 opponents. Offensively, the team has really struggled - they are last in the LSC in scoring (7.5) and yardage (191) per game. Last week, they had negative rushing yardage for the night, and barely cracked 200 yds for the game. Jarrett Byers continues to add to his collection of school records - he is NSU's career leader in receptions (125), receiving yards (2,027) and now receiving TDs (22)

East Central found themselves in their first close contest last week at Angelo State. The Tigers took their first lead of the season, 17-14 on a Corey Dozier 30 yd FG with 9:14 to go in the third quarter. The Rams scored the next two TDs, but the Tigers pulled back to within three before allowing a final ASU TD to make the margin 34-24. The offense put up season highs in both points (24), yards (462) and rushing yards (131).

These two schools have to be happy to have their opening games behind them and get into LSC North play. Outside of Marcus Johnson's passing, it's hard to know what to expect from two teams that have been so overmatched earlty this year. Both teams average less than 75 yds per game rushing, but the rushing defenses have allowed more than 170 yds per game, so that's not help. ECU does have the advantage in the passing game, and they are home, so... 17-14 ECU gets their first win

#6 Texas A&M Commerce (2-2) at #11 Central Oklahoma (0-4)
In what might be a preview of things to come, the Texas A&M-Commerce offense came alive, gaining 545 yards (the most since 9/15/2001) with the Terry Mayo to Willie Thorton combo doing the bulk of the damage. Mayo threw for 360 yds and 5 TDs and Thorton tied a team record with 4 TD receptions, and set a new Lion record with 266 reception yards. Not to be outdone, the defense racked up 7 sacks, had 13 tackles for losses, forced 2 fumbles, and had 3 interceptions.

UCO Game Notes
Central Oklahoma has played one of the toughest schedules in the nation. They have been blown out a couple of times, but have also give two ranked teams scares. Last week against Tarleton State, a Broncho field goal right before halftime pulled UCO to within 21-17 and with momentum on their side. Tarleton answered right back, taking the kickoff all the way back for a TD and a 28-17 halftime lead. UCO did not recover and ended up losing 42-17.

The Lions ran the ball effecitively last week for the first time this season. With UCO 12th in the LSC in rushing defense, they should be able to once again. That just makes their passing game so much more effective. Which Broncho team will show up Saturday? The one that had over 200 yds offense in the first half last week, put up 17 points and controlled the clock - or the one that was shut out in the second half with less than 50 yards of offense and just 2 first downs. It will probably be somewhere in between, which will be enough for a Lion victory. 28-17 TAMC

#8 Southeastern Oklahoma (1-3) at Norwestern State (LA) (2-2)
The Demons come into this game winners against Texas A&M Commerce in week one, and Grambling two weeks ago, and losers against Baylor and #13 (in IAA) Cal-Poly last week. They prefer to run the ball, but have had only moderate success against a tough schedule. Three players have over 100 yds rushing, but all average below 4 yds per carry. John Hundley has passed for 145 yds per game with 4 TDs and 2 Ints. Defensively, they have allowed 144 yds rushing and 250 passing.

SOSU Game Notes
Its been feast or famine for the Savage Storm. There were blowout losses to Tarleton and ACU in weeks one and four, but also a near upset of nationally ranked Midwstern State and a win over Eastern New Mexico in between. There were some silver linings last week. The offense was able to move the ball for the first 35 minutes of the game, with two scoring drives and two drives that ended in ACU territory with turnovers. Brandon McCain completed 18 of 23 passes for the game. The defense really struggled against ACU (just like everyone else), giving up 581 yds (over 11 yds per play).

The Demons will likely be able to run the ball effectively and control the clock and field position. Even against TAMC, they rushed for over 200 yards. Northwestern State should be able to jump out early and cruise to a relativley easy win. NW 35-14

#3 Tarleton State (4-0) at #10 Southwestern Oklahoma (1-3)
Despite outscoring the opposition by a 42-11 margin, national respect for Tarleton State is slow to come by, as they remain ranked #16 in the AFCA poll. They have been consistent, jumping out early on teams, and relying on their running game to coast in the second halves of their games. They lead the LSC in rushing (245 per game) are fourth in total yardage (414) and third in scoring (42.2). With the running game so effective, they haven't needed much out of Scott Grantham and the passing game. The defense has been nothing less than spectacular, leading the LSC in scoring (10.8) and yardage (186).

Southwestern Oklahoma's season has gone south since winning their opening game. The Bulldogs did play West Texas tough, trailing just 28-20 with 3:42 to go in the third quarter. SWO has struggled running the ball, averaging just 85 yds per game, and just 2.6 yds per carry. Steve Day has had some success throwing the ball, averaging 209 yds per game, but is completing just 43% of his passes, and has almost as many Ints (5) as TDs (6). Joe Sawyer and Johnathan Haggerty have been his favorite targets, accounting for more than half of the team's receptions, yards and TDs. Ruzell McCoy leads the SWO defense, which has been good against the run, limiting teams to 106 yds rushing (3.5 yds per carry).

The Texans love to run the ball, but the Bulldogs have the best run defense the Texans have faced so far. If they struggle a bit, the passing game may need to help out a bit more. For the Bulldogs to have success they need to improve their running game, and improve their completion rate in the passing game. The Texan starters might play a bit longer, but they should pull away. TSU wins 35-14

#1 Abilene Christian (3-0) at #9 Eastern New Mexico (1-3)
ACU Game Notes
ACU continues their impressive march through the LSC. The offense leads the conference in both scoring and yardage, while the defense has been more than adequate (17 pts and 304 yds per game). Billy Malone and Bernard Scott continue to put up big numbers despite backups getting plenty of playing time for the Wildcats. Mike Kerns has chipped in with the scoring, running back an interception 99 yards for a TD, a week after scoring on a fumble return.

ENMU continues their transformation to the air raid offense with uneven results. Greyhound QBs have completed more passes in four games this year, than the last three years combined. The running game is practically non-existant, averaging just 23 yds per game. JJ Harp and Darian Dale gave ENMU a glimpse of the future as they combined for 2 fourth quarter TDs last week. The defense has struggled the past two weeks, allowing almost 500 yds and 33.5 pts per game.

If ENMU had trouble with Willie Thorton and Terry Mayo, what will happen this week with Malone, Scott, Knox and company? Even at Blackwater Draw with all its mojo, the Wildcats will roll. They have scored 40+ in 14 of their last 16 games, look for it them to make it 15 of 17. ACU wins 45-10

Game of the Week (honorable mention)
#7 Angelo State (2-2) at #4 Midwestern State (3-0)
ASU Game Notes
The Angelo State offense enjoyed their best game last week, putting up 34 points and going over 400 yards for the first time. Daniel Thomas had 2 TDs and 177 yds rushing. For the year, they are scoring 20 pts a game, and are just under 300 yds of offense per contest. The defense has been stellar, third in points allowed (15 pts per game) fifth in yardage (301 yds) and they have forced 10 turnovers, tied for tops in the LSC.

MSU Game Notes
Midwestern State played their best game of the season, defeating top 20 ranked Newberry College 24-10. Marcus and Bee Jay Mathis lead the Mustangs offense, combining for 140 of MSU's 182 yds rushing per game. That has been necessary, because the Mustang QBs are completing just 41% of their passes for a league low 105 yds per game and have twice as many Ints (4) as TDs (2). The defense has been the main reason that the Mustangs remain undefeated. Teams a scoring just 11 pts per game, and have been held to just 229 yds a contest.

There will be some high scoring games this weekend, but unless something highly unusual happens, this won't be one of them. These two teams have been led by their defenses and have not had the big offensive numbers that others in the LSC South have put up. We'll take MSU in another close one 17-14.

West Texas A&M adds defense to match offense

By George Vondracek

One wouldn't necessarily think about defense when considering the attributes of West Texas A&M's sixth-ranked football team.

In these days of high-powered offenses -- the Buffaloes certainly are noteworthy in that regard -- the numbers that a defense allows must be tempered. Yet if there is one area in which West Texas has improved upon since Don Carthel's arrival as coach three seasons ago, it is defense.

Heading into Saturday night's Lone Star Conference South Division game at Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Buffaloes have the third-best defense statistically in the conference. That isn't welcome news for opponents that already have to deal with an offense that is fourth among NCAA Division II ballclubs.

Rams hoping for better luck against Midwestern State

By Nathan Wright

The Angelo State University football team hasn't had much success against Midwestern State recently.

Riding a two-game winning streak, the Rams hope to reverse that trend when the two teams open Lone Star Conference South play Saturday night in Wichita Falls.

After two losses to open the season, ASU has turned things around and begins conference play against a team that has defeated it by an average of 26 points the past two seasons.

‘Winky’ Walker leading the way as Mustangs’ only fifth-year senior

By J Scott Russell

It’s not exactly the nickname you expect to hear out on the football field, but then Midwestern State safety Herman “Winky” Walker is a little bit unusual himself.

He has gone from a walk-on, to a special team standout, to a starter in the secondary for the No. 8 defense in the country.

And as the Mustangs’ lone fifth-year senior, the 5-10, 170-pounder is all that’s left from the 2004 recruiting class.

Russell: From the Bullpen (Sept. 24)
Lone Star Conference football commentary
By J Scott Russell

Three weeks of crossover play in the Lone Star Conference has really only taught us one sure thing – and most already knew it – the South is much better than the North.

The South just finished off another 5-1 week against the North Division to improve its season record to 16-3 – counting Tarleton State’s non-conference win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.

So, with divisional play beginning this weekend, who are the teams to beat?

Raiders not the only West Texas football power

Call them Texas Tech North, even though they wear maroon and white instead of red and black.

Just like the Red Raiders, the West Texas A&M Buffaloes have college football fans from these parts hog wild about the 2008 season. The Buffs have an unblemished record, top-10 national ranking and prolific passing attack, and just like Mike Leach's bunch, Don Carthel's crew has visions of not only winning a conference championship but fighting for the national crown.

Stakes get higher for No. 6 West Texas A&M

By Greg Jaklewicz

West Texas A&M won its second Lone Star Conference game Saturday, but now the stakes get higher.

After two blowouts, the No. 6 Buffs had to play into the fourth quarter before putting away a scrappy Southwestern Oklahoma State team, 42-20, in a crossover game at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The win improved WT's record to 11-0 vs. North Division teams under Don Carthel.

WT again relied on the play of the K&K combo, Keith Null and Keithon Flemming. Null, now No. 4 on WT's passing yardage list, threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns while Flemming rushed for 121 yards.

Javelinas look to continue improving
By George Vondracek

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Texas A&M-Kingsville certainly hasn't been moonlighting during the first four weeks of the season.

The objectives have been clear -- get better each week while remaining composed and focused on righting a lilting ship that has twin 3-8 records tagged at the end of the previous two seasons.

To many degrees, the Javelinas have progressed. But dawn is breaking and A&M-Kingsville has a few more objectives to attain and must do so against a stern run of competition as Lone Star Conference South Division play begins next weekend.

NSU crowned by Kingsville, 42-14
By Travis Metcalf

For the second time time this season, the Northeastern State University football team played a game that involved somebody setting a school record.

However, for the second time this year, that record ended in a loss.

NSU receiver Jarrett Byers set a school record with 22 career touchdown receptions, but the Javalinas defeated the RiverHawks, 42-14.

Smith paces Texans past Broncos
BY BRAD KEITH

As Roderick Smith continues to roll, so does No. 16 Tarleton State.

Smith returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half Saturday to give the Texans a double digit lead, then stretched the advantage when he scored on a 22-yard screen pass in the third. He also had a pair of first-half scoring runs of one and five yards.

Smith finished with 212 all-purpose yards and four scores, pacing the Texans to a 42-17 defeat of winless Central Oklahoma in front of 5,618 in Lone Star Conference crossover action at Memorial Stadium. In addition to the big kickoff return, the junior rushed 15 times for 92 yards and a caught a pair of passes for 27.

Players of the Week
North Offensive
Willie Thornton, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Wide Receiver, Belle Glade, Fla./UCF/Belle Glade
Thornton set a single-game record with 266 yards receiving and a 98-yard touchdown reception in the Lions' 38-14 win over Eastern New Mexico. His 266 yards eclipsed the previous mark of 259 yards receiving. He tied the school record of Epps with four touchdown receptions.

North Defensive
Cory Whitfield, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Defensive Back, Palestine, Texas/Kilgore JC
Facing the spread offense of Eastern New Mexico, Whitfield made a season-best seven tackles. Broke off a block for a leaping interception in the first quarter that led to the first A&M-Commerce touchdown. He also was a member of an A&M-Commerce defense that recorded seven sacks, 13 tackles for minus yardage, forced two fumbles and picked off three passes.

North Special Teams
Juan Velasco, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Kicker, Santa Maria, Calif./Allen Hancock College
Velasco handled all the kicking duties in the Lions' 38-14 win over Eastern New Mexico. He was 4-for-5 on PAT attempts and had a season-high eight punts, including a season-best 59-yard kick. Three of his eight punts landed inside-the-20.

Co-South Offensive
Marcus Mathis, Midwestern State, So., Running Back, Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall
Mathis' huge second half keyed a 21-0 Midwestern State surge as the Mustangs rolled past No. 21 Newberry 24-10. Mathis rushed for 111 of his career-high 140 yards in the second half as MSU turned a 10-0 deficit into a two-touchdown win. The sophomore from Rockwall's 27-yard touchdown run with 2:24 to go in the third quarter gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game at 17-10, then his 60-yard burst in the middle of the fourth quarter keyed Midwestern's three-play, 73-yard TD drive that put away the game with 6:20 remaining. Mathis produced his fourth career 100-yard rushing effort against a defense came into the weekend as NCAA Division II's ninth best rushing defense allowing 61.5 yards per game including contests against No. 1 Valdosta State and North Greenville.

Billy Malone, Abilene Christian, Sr., Quarterback, Paris, Texas/North Lamar
Malone posted the highest single-game completion percentage of his career (89.5 percent on 17 of 19 passing) as he threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night to lead the fourth-ranked Wildcats to a 59-10 blowout win at Southeastern Oklahoma. Most of Malone's damage came in the first half when he completed 15 of 17 passes for 303 yards and three scores before the Wildcats turned the game over to running back Bernard Scott in the third quarter and the reserves in the fourth quarter. Malone - already the LSC's all-time leading passer, now with 9,799 yards - also broke two other LSC records in the win as he became the LSC and ACU all-time leader in touchdown passes (87) and became the LSC's all-time leader in total offense (9,808 yards).

Co-South Defensive
Jabir Perkins, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Sr., Safety, Dallas, Texas/Irving Nimitz
The Javelinas have forced nine turnovers this year with Perkins having a hand in five of them. He picked off two passes, made a team high seven tackles and picked up his first sack of the season against Northeastern State last week. He is now tied for first in the LSC with three interceptions on the season.

Mike Kern, Abilene Christian, Sr., Linebacker, Leander, Texas/Leander
Kern had five tackles, one-half tackle for loss and a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in fourth-ranked ACU's 59-10 win at Southeastern Oklahoma. After ACU had taken a 7-0 lead, the Savage Storm drove right back down the field where they had second-and-goal at the ACU 6-yard line. However, Kern stepped in front of a Brandon McCain pass at the 1-yard line, cut to the left sideline and went 99 yards for the score to turn a potential tie game into a 14-0 ACU lead. The touchdown return marked the second straight week in which Kern had scored after he scored on a 35-yard fumble return for a TD two weeks ago against A&M-C. That return was the longest interception for a touchdown in school history, topping the 98-yard touchdown return for a touchdown by Jan Brown against Howard Payne in 1973. The return tied Stacy Brown's 99-yard return against New Mexico Highlands for the longest return in school history. Kern was a big part of an ACU defensive effort that limited the Savage Storm to just 279 yards of total offense on 72 total plays, an average of just 3.9 yards per play.

South Special Teams
Roderick Smith, Tarleton State, Jr., RB/KR, Mesquite, Texas/West HS
Smith fielded a kickoff at the Tarleton seven and returned it 93 yards as time expired in the first half to put the Texans up 28-17 after UCO had just scored on a field goal to cut the lead to 21-17. He had 212 all-purpose yards to lead all players.

Daily football roundup 9-19

Winless UCO visits NO. 16 Tarleton

By Brad Keith

Tarleton State has climbed to No. 2 in the nation in total defense, including No. 4 against the run.

That doesn’t bode well for the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma, who through three games, are averaging just 52 yards on the ground.

No. 16 Tarleton, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference crossover play is the heavy favorite in their second crossover battle against Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Play calling has contributed significantly to the Bronchos’ lack of a rushing attack. In its first year under new Head Coach Terry Holland, Central has employed a pass happy offense similar to the Texas Tech “Air Raid” that West Texas A&M has run in recent years. The Bronchos have operated in a 2-1 pass-to-run ratio, calling 129 pass plays and only 65 rush attempts in three straight losses to begin the season.

Javs' offensive line begins to gel

By George Vondracek

KINGSVILLE -- If it is true that familiarity breeds contempt, then it also is true that familiarity brings individuals and/or groups into close contact, to the point where said individuals almost can anticipate the others' moves.

That close camaraderie can go a long way for fostering success on the football field, especially on the offensive front where most coaches agree that ballgames are decided.

Thus it is no surprise that, eventually or finally, pending your viewpoint, Texas A&M-Kingsville has started to shed some growing pains on offense and become a productive unit.

In this case, the numbers aren't fibbing. Illinois transfer Billy Garza is steadily rounding into form as Texas A&M-Kingsville's No. 1 quarterback.

The Brownsville native earned co-Lone Star Conference South Division Offensive Player of the Week honors by helping guide the Javelinas over Central Oklahoma 41-6. In his third career start, Garza threw for 350 yards on a 24-of-38 effort and two touchdowns with an interception in leading the Javelinas to their second consecutive road victory.

Recap of last week's games...

WTAM over Azusa Pacific 75-13 (Prediction 56-10) - a name your score game
ASU over SWO 24-2 (21-17) - solid D and 5 SWO turnovers
TSU over ECU 38-6 (49-14) - ECU turnovers allow TSU to jump out big and cruise
SOSU over ENMU 29-14 (24-21) - Savage Storm took control of the game once they held on to ball
TAMK over UCO 41-6 (31-14) - Javs overcome IKE and early penalties to cruise
MSU over NSU 7-3 (28-10) - another week of defense saving the day; offense has to improve
ACU over TAMC 45-14 (42-17) - ACU led 42-0 early in third

for the week 7-0, for the season 22-2.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

#13 East Central (0-3) at #7 Angelo State (1-2)
To say that ECU's season has been a disappointment so far would be a huge understatement. It's one thing to be 0-3 (especially with their schedule), but to be outscored by an average of 36-2 in the first half of their games is another. While the passing game has been pretty good (234 yds per game, 60% pass completion), the running game has been non-existant (54 yds, 1.7 per carry average). Defensively, the Tigers are allowing only 168 yds passing, but 245 on the ground as teams are rushing the ball almost 2/3 of the time (and averaging 6.2 yds per carry).

That should be good news for Angelo State. Even taking out the game vs. IAA Texas State, the Rams only ran for a 102.5 avg vs. TAMC and SWO (on an avg. of 42.5 carries per game). Will Metzger did well in his second start, going 15-26 for 155 yds and 2 TDs. The big surprise so far for the Rams this year has to be their defense. They are 3rd in the LSC in both yardage and points allowed, and have yet to give up 300 yds in a game. The run defense should be able to lower its 127 yds allowed average, but the pass defense will be hard pressed to match the 119 yd per game average.

The Ram's would like a repeat of last week - jump out early and keep their freshman QB from having too much pressure on him. Look for the running game to break out and have their best game of the year. The Tigers will get their yards and Johnson will keep them in the game for a while, but don't expect a repeat of last year's offensive explosion. ASU wins 28-10

#1 Abilene Christian (2-0) at #8 Southeastern Oklahoma (1-2)
It's not a shock that ACU is leading the LSC in total offense at 538 yards a game, it might be a bit surprising considering they did it against two defenses that were expected to be pretty tough this year. Balancing the run and pass, the Wildcats have been nearly unstoppable. Malone is spreading the ball around, tossing TD passes to six different players. The defense has been good enough, allowing 21 pts and 316 yds per game. If they continue at that level, this team will be difficult to beat.

Southeastern Oklahoma has improved each week, getting their first win last week with a 29-14 victory over Eastern New Mexico. Baylen Laury has been solid at RB, averaging 79 yds per game, and Brandon McCain had his best game last week completing over 70% of his passes for 292 yds and 2 TDs. Daniel Nichols is looking like the best WR in the north. The run defense has allowed 131 yds per game, which is pretty good considering they opened with Tarleton State and Midwestern State.

Don't expect the weekly trend to continue for the Savage Storm. ACU has too much offensive firepower for SOSU to slow down enough for their offense to keep up with. SOSU might keep it respectable for a while, but ACU wins comfortably 45-17.

#10 Southwestern Oklahoma (1-2) at #2 West Texas A&M (3-0)
The Bulldogs are in the middle of the pack in the main statistical categories, but have lost their only two games vs. D2 teams (both of whom were picked at the bottom of the LSC South to boot). While averaging 213 yds per game passing, SWO is completing just over 40% of their passes, and the running game hasn't gotten untracked, averaging just 80 yds per game and 2.5 yds per carry. The defense has been solid against the run (94 yds per game), but has allowed teams to complete 2/3 of their passes.

The Buffaloes put on an offensive show for their fans last week, overowering NAIA Azusa Pacific 75-13 (and it could have been much worse). Excluding that game, the offense is averaging 115 yds rushing and 401 yds passing. The defense is allowing 150 yds per game rushing and 181 passing (again excluding Azusa Pacific). The starters have been getting plenty of rest with two consecutive blowouts, which could pay dividends down the road.

The Buffs should be able to move the ball through the air fairly easily, but they might want to work on their running game as well. Keithon Flemming has not had that breakout game we got used to seeing last year - this may be that week. WT 45-17.

#11 Central Oklahoma (0-3) at #3 Tarleton State (3-0)
If you think East Central has had a tough schedule, Central Oklahoma one ups them with Tarleton State this week. The Bronchos have be struggling on offense (232 yds and 12 pts per game) and defense (526 yds and 35 pts per contest). They are second to last in rushing yardage and passing efficiency on offense (on defense its third from last and second from last in the same categories). The good news for the Bronchos is that their schedule gets much easier after this week.

Tarleton has been jumping on teams early (26-3 average halftime score) and then cruising. They lead the LSC in rushing (249 yds per game) and run the ball twice as much as they pass. That may be a result of the big early leads, but its been effective. Roderick Smith is averaging almost 10 yds per carry. The defense is starting to make believers out of those who had their doubts. They lead the LSC in both scoring defense and yardage.

Same script for the Texans this week. Take advantage of Broncho miscues, and keep running the ball until someone stops them. TSU wins 38-10

#9 Eastern New Mexico (1-2) at #6 Texas A&M-Commerce (1-2)
The learning process continues for the Greyhounds. Coming off a win over SWO the week before, ENMU had a 14-0 lead over Southeastern Oklahoma, taking advantage of 3 SOSU turnovers. The second half was the polar opposite, as 4 ENMU interceptions led to 29 unanswered points for the Savage Storm. They've been able to move the ball through the air (260 yds per game) but are dead last in rushing. The defense has been good at stopping the run (74 yds per game) but not so good agains the pass (302 yds per game).

Texas A&M-Commerce was completely overwhelmed by ACU last week, falling behind 42-0, before falling 45-14. The Lions have not established the running game, averaging just 70 yds per game (2.5 per carry) and the passing game has been inconsistent, with Terry Mayo completing less than 45% of his passes. The defense played well in the first two weeks, allowing just 254 yds per game, but could not stop ACU's starters last week.

Look for the Lion's defense turn up the heat and try to force ENMU into mistakes. This could be a close game, but the TAMC should be able to handle the Greyhounds. TAMC 17-14

#5 Texas A&M-Kingsville (2-1) at #12 Northeastern State (0-3)
The road warriors head back to Oklahoma for a third straight week to take on the Riverhawks. Despite the distractions of Hurricane Ike, the Javelinas rolled into Edmond and rolled over the Brochos. TAMK's offense seems to get better each week. They are averaging 33 pts and 450 yds per game on offense (170 rushing and 280 passing). The defense is allowing 20 pts and 330 yds per game (78 rushing and 252 passing).

The defense has been okay for the Riverhawks (338 yds and 22 pts per game), but the offense has not found its groove (187 yds and 5 pts per game). The red zone offense has only converted 2 of 7 trips inside the 20, and NSU has only one TD total through 3 games. Broderick Mondy is enjoying another solid season, leading NSU with 27 tackles, with 2.5 for losses and has broken up 2 passes.

The Javelinas appear to be much improved over the past two years. The Riverhawks do not. As long as TAMK is not looking ahead to WTAM next week, they should win comfortably. TAMK 28-10

Game of the week
Newberry (1-1) at #4 Midwestern State (2-0)

Newberry is nationally ranked and played #1 Valdosta State to a standoff (barely losing 14-9) and stomping North Greenville 41-3. They may very well start redshirt freshman John Carnell after his 13-19 213 yd 3 TD performance last week. They average 135 yds rushing and 196 passing. Defensively, they are led by LB Will Newell. This experienced group has given up just 62 yds rushing and 182 yds passing.

While Midwestern State is 2-0, they could easily be 0-2. While they have done well rushing the ball (182 yds per game), the passing game has struggled (96 yds per game). Neither Green nor Eskridge has established himself as the clear choice at QB. The defense has played great so far. Second in defense in both scoring and yardage.

This has the makings of a game dominated by the defenses. Midwestern State will have a hard time running on Newberry if the passing game doesn't improve. Newberry has proven it can play with the nation's elite and hold their own. Newberry 24-13

RiverHawks making progress
By George Vondracek

With a new coach and revamped support staff comes change. There has been plenty of it within Northeastern (Okla.) State's football program that is nestled in the heart of the Cherokee Nation.

There just hasn't been much on-field success for the RiverHawks. Northeastern has posted a 21-53 record since its last winning year in 2000, which includes this season's 0-3 start.

"Yeah, but the thing I've seen is a lot of progress. They've had seven losing seasons in a row and we're taking over a program that's been down," first-year coach Kenny Evans said. "In the nine months I've been here there've been a lot of positives, a lot of things that've gone on that I think are going to get this program back on track where it should be."

Rams look to keep rolling in home opener
By Nathan Wright

The Angelo State University football team hasn't won two games in a row since the 2005 season.

After grabbing their first win of the season last week at Southwestern Oklahoma, the Rams will look to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since that playoff campaign when they host East Central (Okla.) in their first home game of the season Saturday at San Angelo Stadium.

Last Saturday's win was three weeks in the making as the Rams' young offense caught up to its experienced defense to pull out the win. Now the Rams want another one.

From the Bullpen
By J Scott Russell

Of the five Lone Star Conference games last Saturday that stood a good chance of being in the path of either Hurricane Ike or its remnants, only one didn’t move the starting time up.

The result of that game? Midwestern State’s sloppy 7-3 win over Northeastern State in a rainstorm.

Had the starting time been moved up to 2 p.m., the fans would have been treated to a much better brand of football and probably would have seen more than a field goal and a fumble returned for a touchdown.

A&M-Commerce defense facing test from ENMU

By David Claybourn

COMMERCE — In past times whenever Texas A&M University-Commerce prepared to play Eastern New Mexico in football, the Lions’ defense had to practice against the triple-option offense.

But times have changed and now the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds have de-emphasized the run in favor of the pass.

So the Lions’ defense is preparing to face a lot of passing from the Greyhounds for Saturday’s 7 p.m. contest at A&M-Commerce’s Memorial Stadium.

Javelinas Set To Play Fourth Straight Away Game
KRIS TV (With Video)

KINGSVILLE - The Javelinas are set to make a new record as they get ready to play their fourth straight game outside of Kingsville, something the program has never done before.

In both 1984 and 1987, the Texas A&M Kingsville football team began its season with three straight road games. 21 years later, the Hogs are putting those starts to shame as they play their fourth straight away-game.

"We feel good right now at 2 and 1, but we are still hungry. We got a lot more to play and a lot more to win," Mike Martinez, who has had 17.5 tackles through three games, said.
