ACU meets longtime foe in home opener
The oldest rivalry in the Lone Star Conference resumes when the fourth-ranked Abilene Christian Wildcats host Texas A&M Commerce at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shotwell Stadium.
The Wildcats enter their 2008 home opener at 1-0 following their 44-27 win at Northwest Missouri State two weeks ago -- a contest that saw them rally from a 21-7 first-quarter deficit to knock off the then-No. 3 team in the country.

The second-year Texas A&M-Kingsville football coach will get a pretty fair assessment of how far his Javelinas have come today in Edmond, Okla.
Shuttled to Oklahoma because of Hurricane Ike, the 1-1 Javelinas' scheduled home opener now becomes their third consecutive road game to start the season when they take on Central Oklahoma at Wantland Stadium. The ballclub and support group left Kingsville on Thursday afternoon, stopped in Justin for a workout and then continued the trek to Edmond.

MSU seeks 2nd win, improvement

When they meet the Northeastern State RiverHawks tonight they’ll be hoping they can match the Texans in wins against their conference foes from the North Division.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. for the Lone Star Conference crossover game at Doc Wadley Stadium in Tahlequah, Okla.

Banged up Tigers face tough task

Ada — In this age of almost total South Division dominance in the Lone Star Conference, playing crossover games isn’t the way to fatten up for teams from the North. And after being outscored, 102-28, in their first two games of the season, the East Central University Tigers figure to find slim pickings again Saturday night against Tarleton State — the 20th-ranked team in Division II football but perhaps only the third best team in the LSC South.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Norris FIeld.

An army of one Buff

That's the motto of the Texas National Guard, of which West Texas A&M linebacker Max Steward is a member.
Two football seasons ago, Steward earned second-team all-Lone Star Conference honors as WT went from worst to first in the league. The loss of his eligibility, the birth of his son and the subsequent search for a job to support him took Steward away from college football.
Notice to WTAMU opponents: He's back.
