The Angelo State University football team is still looking for its first win of the season, but it has already gone through at least a half-season's worth of adversity.
In ASU's first game alone, the Rams lost their starting quarterback for the season and watched three field-goal attempts that would have changed the outcome of a 21-14 loss to Texas State miss the mark.
The Rams quickly picked themselves up, replacing junior signal-caller Josh Neiswander with redshirt freshman Will Mezger and almost earned their first win of the season last week in a 13-10 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce.

Patience paying off for MSU defensive end Turner

Being patient is paying off for Midwestern State defensive end Stephen Turner.
It’s paying off in that the former Rider standout is coming into his own and starting on the left side for the Mustangs after three years learning the ropes.
And it paid off last Saturday night against Southeastern Oklahoma State as he picked up a couple of big sacks in the second half after being relatively quiet in the first 30 minutes of the game.
“It didn’t really feel like I did that much,” the junior said. “Then I saw what I did when watching film. I knew I had the sacks, but I didn’t realize that I had two batted balls as well. But I also saw some of the mental errors I made.”

A&M-Commerce defense to challenge ACU offense

Can Texas A&M University-Commerce’s strong defense slow down the potent Abilene Christian offense enough for the Lions to upset the No. 4 nationally-ranked Wildcats?
That’s the question that’ll be answered starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Abilene during a Lone Star Conference football contest between the 1-1 Lions and the 1-0 Wildcats.
The Lions, after limiting Angelo State only 219 total yards, rank third overall in the conference in total defense, allowing 254 yards per game. The Lions also ranked third in the LSC in total defense in 2007 (304.6 ypg) and first in both 2006 (258.3 ypg) and 2005 (318.9 ypg).
