Rams feeling good going into second game

Despite a seven-point loss to Texas State in San Marcos, the Angelo State University football team left its season-opener last Saturday feeling pretty good about itself.
The Rams were encouraged by their offensive and defensive play and were comforted knowing that they were just three missed field goals away from one of the biggest wins in recent history.
"First games of the year are very difficult," ASU head coach Dale Carr said. "I thought it was one of the cleaner executed games I have been in since I have been coaching, going back to my playing days. We performed like a more experienced team would. I expect us to be better and make fewer mistakes (today). By and large I was pleased with the outcome. We were looking for our guys to play good football, and we would liked to have had the win, but we played well."

Young Mustangs face first test tonight against Storm

It’s a week later than everyone else in the conference began and almost a month since the players reported, but the Midwestern State Mustangs will finally get the 2008 football season under way tonight.
Their opponents, the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm, do have a game under their belts, but it’s probably one they’d just as soon forget — a 51-10 thrashing at the hands of the Tarleton State Texans.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium as both teams try to pick up their first win of the season. This is a Lone Star Conference crossover game for both teams.
“Southeastern will be well coached — as they have been for the last five or six seasons — and they’ll be well disciplined,” said MSU head coach Bill Maskill, who is entering his seventh season running the Mustangs. “They’re tough, hard-nosed kids who play hard and have competed well against us in the past.

Buffs expect to see physical UCO defense

EDMOND, Okla. - An offensive line that last week allowed just one sack and was flagged for only one holding penalty will get a more severe test tonight.
West Texas A&M is on the road again, playing Central Oklahoma in a Lone Star Conference crossover football game. Last year in Canyon, Central held WT below 100 yards rushing and to its second-lowest point total of the season in a more rough-and-tumble game than the 31-0 final score indicated.
"We expect a very physical ballgame. Last year's game had a lot of intense moments," WT coach Don Carthel said.
Gone is standout Bronchos linebacker Will Clewis, but eight other defensives starters are back. Last week, UCO held then-No. 17 Pittsburg State to 16 points, its lowest total in five seasons, and forced five turnovers in a 16-12 loss.
"They'll have the idea they can beat us," Carthel said. "We view this as an LSC game, just the same as the ACU game or the Tarleton game. We can't afford any hiccups from here on out."

No pain, no gain for Javs

ADA, Okla. -- There have been some real stingers that have found their way into the hides of Texas A&M-Kingsville's Javelinas in recent years. The West Texas A&Ms, the Midwestern States and Abilene Christians, as well as the Northwest Missouri States, Grand Valley States and Valdosta States in the postseason.
While last week's 40-14 whipping at the hands of North Dakota doesn't equate numerically on a scale of, say, last year's 73-6 debacle at Midwestern State, the burn is just as searing.
"It hurt them. They've invested. They stayed around this summer," Javelinas coach Bo Atterberry said. "They felt like they let one slip. I think they were pretty confident that we could've gone up there and beat them.
