A&M-Commerce hopes for big game at Abilene Christian

COMMERCE — Can Texas A&M University-Commerce’s strong defense slow down the potent Abilene Christian offense enough for the Lions to upset the No. 4 nationally-ranked Wildcats?
That’s the question that’ll be answered starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Abilene during a Lone Star Conference football contest between the 1-1 Lions and the 1-0 Wildcats.
The Lions, after limiting Angelo State only 219 total yards, rank third overall in the conference in total defense, allowing 254 yards per game. The Lions also ranked third in the LSC in total defense in 2007 (304.6 ypg) and first in both 2006 (258.3 ypg) and 2005 (318.9 ypg).

Javs like living on the run

KINGSVILLE -- Running the football has been a staple in most coaches' playbooks since the first pigskin was sewn.
Even with the advent and subsequent dominance of the forward pass, most feel a solid rushing attack can do as much for a ballclub as a strong-armed quarterback filling airspace with passes.
To a large degree, Texas A&M-Kingsville's reputation has been founded on the run via such past standouts as Johnny Bailey, Larry Collins, Heath Sherman, Raymorris Miller and Dexter Deese. So it was a return to yesteryear last weekend when the Javelinas rushed their way past East Central (Okla.).

FAKE PUNT isn't GOING AWAY
For two consecutive ballgames, Texas A&M-Kingsville has tried to execute a fake punt. For two consecutive weeks it has failed, but coach Bo Atterberry says the trick play won't be expelled from the Javlinas' playbook.
The play worked once last season when punter Cody Smith completed a 25-yard pass to extend a drive that ultimately resulted in a touchdown. Both times this season, however, up-back Stuart Moffitt didn't complete his intended passes.

Coping with DID

When Herschel Walker talked about the best thing that ever happened to him in a Thursday visit to Wichita Falls, he didn’t mention anything about his football career as one of the greatest running backs ever.
He didn’t cite anything about playing 12 years of professional football for the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings — or about winning the Heisman Trophy in 1982.
Instead, he pointed to the day when he asked for help with a mental illness that had — unbeknownst to him — plagued him for years.
