KINGSVILLE -- This time last year, Jareko Taylor was a bystander.Just months after bursting on the Texas A&M-Kingsville football scene with a record-setting season, Taylor was relegated to the sidelines thanks to academic difficulties. It wasn't a pleasant feeling for the receiver from Detroit.
"Oh, man. Just seeing the guys have fun in the games, I didn't like that very much," Taylor said. "All 365 days when I had to sit out, I just that feeling of not being out there when I know I should have been. I was discouraged with myself."
Taylor weathered that 3-8 season in 2007 along with the rest of the Javelinas, enduring it through prayer and daily telephone calls to his parents back in Michigan. He finally got his grades in line. Now, Taylor is one of A&M-Kingsville's more potent weapons and is on pace to duplicate and surpass his shining 2006 season.
Through the first four games of the season, the 6-foot Taylor ranks 18th among NCAA Division II players with an average of 104.3 receiving yards per game. He has posted successive 100-yard receiving efforts in the past two ballgames, giving him seven for his career.

Second-year Texas A&M-Kingsville football coach Bo Atterberry would be feeling a lot better about his ballclub if it weren't for the staggering number of penalties. In the last two ballgames alone, the Javelinas have been penalized 29 times for 211 yards. In perspective, Central Oklahoma and Northeastern (Okla.) State combined for 444 yards of offense in those outings, leaving Atterberry scratching his head.
"We talked about the penalties and all after the game. As usual, we did some of them and some of them might have been questionable. But that's part of the game," Atterberry said. "The reality of it is they go on the stat sheet, so we're charged for them. You've got to eliminate those things.

No. 18 Tarleton State puts its undefeated mark of 4-0 on the line in Weatherford, Okla. Saturday when the Texans close out LSC crossover play against 1-3 Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Schools from Oklahoma have been victims of each of Tarleton's wins this season, but Head Coach Sam McElroy warns the Bulldogs, which stayed within eight points of No. 6 West Texas A&M until late in the third period last week, are improving, and are likely the best team the Texans have played this season.
“Last week, they kind of changed their mentality offensively and started pounding the ball,” McElroy said of the Bulldogs. “They had some success with it against West Texas so I couldn't imagine them not trying it again this week. The improvement they showed from week three to week four of the season was pretty impressive.” Now, especially with the WT game to build on and playing back at home at Milam Stadium, McElroy says the Bulldogs will be tough to put away.

So when University of the Incarnate Word president Louis Agnese, awash in pride over his new football team, suggests taking UIW's athletics programs into NCAA Division I by 2012, it's not a surprise.
“We're not that little college at the corner of Broadway and Hildebrand anymore,” he said.
UIW and Division I?
Agnese says it's possible, but only as a last resort if the school fails to gain admittance to the Division II Lone Star Conference.

NSU looks to spoil East Central's party

The Northeastern State University football team plays its homecoming game on Oct. 4, but until then the RiverHawks will be the homecoming opponent when they travel to East Central on Saturday afternoon.
The RiverHawks enter this contest 0-4 after losing, 42-14, against Texas A&M Kingsville. NSU coach Kenny Evans said he completely understands why his team was picked to be the homecoming opponent.
“People are scheduling us for a reason,” Evans said. “Nobody likes to lose their homecoming game and I’m sure that has a lot to do with their scheduling.”Evans feels his team has its best chance of the season of picking up a win on Saturday.
