Stakes get higher for No. 6 West Texas A&M

West Texas A&M won its second Lone Star Conference game Saturday, but now the stakes get higher.

After two blowouts, the No. 6 Buffs had to play into the fourth quarter before putting away a scrappy Southwestern Oklahoma State team, 42-20, in a crossover game at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The win improved WT's record to 11-0 vs. North Division teams under Don Carthel.

WT again relied on the play of the K&K combo, Keith Null and Keithon Flemming. Null, now No. 4 on WT's passing yardage list, threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns while Flemming rushed for 121 yards.

Javelinas look to continue improving

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Texas A&M-Kingsville certainly hasn't been moonlighting during the first four weeks of the season.

The objectives have been clear -- get better each week while remaining composed and focused on righting a lilting ship that has twin 3-8 records tagged at the end of the previous two seasons.

To many degrees, the Javelinas have progressed. But dawn is breaking and A&M-Kingsville has a few more objectives to attain and must do so against a stern run of competition as Lone Star Conference South Division play begins next weekend.

NSU crowned by Kingsville, 42-14

For the second time time this season, the Northeastern State University football team played a game that involved somebody setting a school record.

However, for the second time this year, that record ended in a loss.

NSU receiver Jarrett Byers set a school record with 22 career touchdown receptions, but the Javalinas defeated the RiverHawks, 42-14.

Smith paces Texans past Broncos

As Roderick Smith continues to roll, so does No. 16 Tarleton State.

Smith returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half Saturday to give the Texans a double digit lead, then stretched the advantage when he scored on a 22-yard screen pass in the third. He also had a pair of first-half scoring runs of one and five yards.

Smith finished with 212 all-purpose yards and four scores, pacing the Texans to a 42-17 defeat of winless Central Oklahoma in front of 5,618 in Lone Star Conference crossover action at Memorial Stadium. In addition to the big kickoff return, the junior rushed 15 times for 92 yards and a caught a pair of passes for 27.
