Couldn't find any news articles on LSC football, other than local recaps of the players of the week. So, why not look at Midwestern State's opponent this week, the Newberry No Mascots (formerly Indians, chose not to rename).
Newberry came into the season ranked #20 in the AFCA poll. They dropped their opener against Valdosta State 14-9, and rolled over North Greenville 41-3. Offensively they average 330.5 yds, 134.5 on the ground and 196 through the air. In 2007, they totalled 401 yds per game, 229 rushing and 172 passing. Defensively, they have allowed just 243.5 yds per game, 61.5 rushing and 182 passing. Last year, they gave up just 282 yds per game, 143 rushing and 139 passing. They outscored their opponents by a 35-16.4 margin.
They have played 3 QBs with varying success, with freshman John Carnell emerging last week, going 13-19 for 213 yds and 3 TDs. Sophmore Tharry Salley is the leading rusher, with 138 yards. David Pressley (Soph) and Kelton Tindal (Jr) have combined for 19 receptions for 274 yds and 3 TDs to lead the receivers. This is a young offense with 2 Freshmen, 4 Sophs, 4 Jrs, and 2 Srs listed as starters.
Defensively, they are more experienced with 7 Srs, 2 Jrs, and 2 Sophs starting. Preseason all-american defensive back Temarcus Thompson and LB Will Newell are the headliners. Newell has been chosen SAC defensive player of the week after both Newberry games, and leads the team with 24 tackles, 4 for loss, and 2 sacks.
Texas Connection: Freshman QB Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio Madison) has not seen game action and may be red-shirted. He is expected to travel with the team to Wichita Falls.
