Lamberti headlines ACU Hall of Fame class

Rex Lamberti, one of the greatest quarterbacks in Abilene Christian University football history, and former national champion tennis player Michelle King lead a group of four ACU athletes who will be inducted into the ACU Sports Hall of Fame next month.

Others set for induction are former track and field standout Jerry Dyes and former volleyball standout Linda (Evans) Halpayne.

Scott tops in LSC South
Bernard Scott became the second Abilene Christian University player in three weeks to earn Lone Star Conference South Division Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Quarterback Billy Malone was honored two weeks ago.

In Saturday's 45-14 win over Texas A&M-Commerce, Scott topped the 100-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career with six catches for 131 yards and one touchdown catch. His previous career high for receiving in a game was seven catches for 82 yards and one touchdown in last season's 59-31 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville in Abilene. Scott added 121 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

RiverHawks making progress

With a new coach and revamped support staff comes change. There has been plenty of it within Northeastern (Okla.) State's football program that is nestled in the heart of the Cherokee Nation.

There just hasn't been much on-field success for the RiverHawks. Northeastern has posted a 21-53 record since its last winning year in 2000, which includes this season's 0-3 start.

"Yeah, but the thing I've seen is a lot of progress. They've had seven losing seasons in a row and we're taking over a program that's been down," first-year coach Kenny Evans said. "In the nine months I've been here there've been a lot of positives, a lot of things that've gone on that I think are going to get this program back on track where it should be."

Rams look to keep rolling in home opener

The Angelo State University football team hasn't won two games in a row since the 2005 season.

After grabbing their first win of the season last week at Southwestern Oklahoma, the Rams will look to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since that playoff campaign when they host East Central (Okla.) in their first home game of the season Saturday at San Angelo Stadium.

Last Saturday's win was three weeks in the making as the Rams' young offense caught up to its experienced defense to pull out the win. Now the Rams want another one.

Of the five Lone Star Conference games last Saturday that stood a good chance of being in the path of either Hurricane Ike or its remnants, only one didn’t move the starting time up.

The result of that game? Midwestern State’s sloppy 7-3 win over Northeastern State in a rainstorm.

Had the starting time been moved up to 2 p.m., the fans would have been treated to a much better brand of football and probably would have seen more than a field goal and a fumble returned for a touchdown.

A&M-Commerce defense facing test from ENMU

COMMERCE — In past times whenever Texas A&M University-Commerce prepared to play Eastern New Mexico in football, the Lions’ defense had to practice against the triple-option offense.

But times have changed and now the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds have de-emphasized the run in favor of the pass.

So the Lions’ defense is preparing to face a lot of passing from the Greyhounds for Saturday’s 7 p.m. contest at A&M-Commerce’s Memorial Stadium.

Javelinas Set To Play Fourth Straight Away Game

KINGSVILLE - The Javelinas are set to make a new record as they get ready to play their fourth straight game outside of Kingsville, something the program has never done before.

In both 1984 and 1987, the Texas A&M Kingsville football team began its season with three straight road games. 21 years later, the Hogs are putting those starts to shame as they play their fourth straight away-game.

"We feel good right now at 2 and 1, but we are still hungry. We got a lot more to play and a lot more to win," Mike Martinez, who has had 17.5 tackles through three games, said.
