West Texas A&M adds defense to match offense

One wouldn't necessarily think about defense when considering the attributes of West Texas A&M's sixth-ranked football team.
In these days of high-powered offenses -- the Buffaloes certainly are noteworthy in that regard -- the numbers that a defense allows must be tempered. Yet if there is one area in which West Texas has improved upon since Don Carthel's arrival as coach three seasons ago, it is defense.
Heading into Saturday night's Lone Star Conference South Division game at Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Buffaloes have the third-best defense statistically in the conference. That isn't welcome news for opponents that already have to deal with an offense that is fourth among NCAA Division II ballclubs.

Rams hoping for better luck against Midwestern State

The Angelo State University football team hasn't had much success against Midwestern State recently.
Riding a two-game winning streak, the Rams hope to reverse that trend when the two teams open Lone Star Conference South play Saturday night in Wichita Falls.
After two losses to open the season, ASU has turned things around and begins conference play against a team that has defeated it by an average of 26 points the past two seasons.

‘Winky’ Walker leading the way as Mustangs’ only fifth-year senior

It’s not exactly the nickname you expect to hear out on the football field, but then Midwestern State safety Herman “Winky” Walker is a little bit unusual himself.
He has gone from a walk-on, to a special team standout, to a starter in the secondary for the No. 8 defense in the country.
And as the Mustangs’ lone fifth-year senior, the 5-10, 170-pounder is all that’s left from the 2004 recruiting class.

Police arrest UCO football player on rape charges

EDMOND — A University of Central Oklahoma football player has been arrested on a complaint of rape by instrumentation of a 16-year-old girl.
Edmond Police arrested Zachary Paul Drew, 20, at 12:35 p.m. during class on Tuesday, said Glynda Chu, spokeswoman for the Edmond Police Department.
He has been charged by the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office with one count of first-degree rape by instrumentation. The arrest warrant was issued Tuesday by Special Judge Russell Hall. Drew’s bond was set at $25,000.
