Softball Nabs Blinn Transfer
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville head softball coach Blake Miller announced that Blinn College pitcher-first baseman Lindsey Brown will play for the Javelinas next year after leading the Buccaneers to the NJCAA Division I World Series this past year.
Brown earned Second Team All-Region XIV honors as a freshman en route to leading her team to a conference championship and a fourth place finish nationally. At the World Series, she won two games, including a 4-0 shutout of Florida CCJ and picked up one save. The team finished with a 56-11 record in her only season.
Brown was equally good in the circle and at the plate. As a pitcher, she went 21-3 with a 1.96 earned run average while striking out 96 batters in 157.1 innings. At bat, she hit .406 with a team high 23 doubles, 16 home runs, 81 runs batted in and a .777 slugging percentage.
Brown will provide the Javelinas with a big bat in the middle of the order and should take the place of Courtney Rigamonti as the team’s #1 pitcher. She joins a team that went 32-22 and advanced to the Lone Star Conference Tournament last year.

Basketball Adds 12 to Roster
WEATHERFORD, Okla. - First-year Southwestern Oklahoma State University men's basketball coach Charlie Schaef has announced the signing of eight players to National Letters of Intent and committing themselves to play for the Bulldogs during the 2009-10 season. In addition to the signees, Schaef has also secured agreements from four others to join the program as walk-ons.
"We are extremely proud of this class," Schaef said. "I would like to congratulate and compliment (assistant coach) Wayne Anderson who has been out on the road representing and recruiting for SWOSU basketball and our University."
Schaef and Anderson had extensive work heading into their first season together as the top seven scorers from last year's Lone Star Conference Tournament runner-up team have graduated.
"We were able to cover some needs across the board," Schaef said "Most importantly, I wanted people who were willing to join us as we start a new path. We found student-athletes who are self-disciplined, self-confidant and share the vision we have for the future of SWOSU basketball."

Angelo State sophomore Aisha Adams placed eighth in the heptathlon at the 2009 USA Track & Field Outdoor National Championships this past weekend in Eugene, Ore.
Adams, a native of Covington, Tenn., finished the competition with a personal-best 5,636 points. She bettered her point tally from last month's NCAA Division II National Championships by 50 points on the national stage. By finishing in the top eight at the competition, Adams has qualified for the U.S. Team for the Thorpe Cup, held near Frankfurt, Germany, Aug. 8-9.
Adams opened the competition Saturday with a strong performance in the 100-meter hurdles, running a time of 13.18 for 1,005 points, winning her heat and matching her personal best set in the event at the D-II National Championships. However, she struggled in the high jump (5'4.25") and the shot put (38'5.5") before rebounding in the 200-meter dash. She closed the first day with a 13.68 in the fourth event, six one-hundredths shy of her personal best, for a day-one total of 3,335 points.
She opened the second day with a leap of 19'11.75" in the long jump and followed that up with a throw of 120' in the javelin to more her into the top eight. Adams finished the competition with a personal-best time of 2:20.13 in the 800-meter dash to secure her trip to Germany in August.
Adams was the only D-II student-athlete in the 19-person field of the heptathlon. This season, she was named the NCAA D-II National Female Field Athlete of the Year.
Felton Stars for Team Arizona
LITTLE AXE, Okla. - A future baseball player bound for Southwestern Oklahoma State University is among a handful of players competing for Team Arizona in the Sunbelt Classic. Mike Felton, a shortstop/second baseman from Chandler, Ariz., is starting for the Arizona all-star squad in an elite baseball showcase that features many of the top high school seniors from a number of different states.
The event, which brings together teams from six states, including one from Canada, is a hot spot for professional scouts and college recruiters who can get an early glimpse at future draft/college baseball prospects.
Felton's Arizona team has put up a 5-1 record against its competition this week and is a strong candidate to move into the finals Saturday against Texas. Team Arizona beat Ohio 8-4 early on Friday to set up a semifinals showdown against Maryland. In the game against Ohio, Felton started at second base and went one-for-two with one run scored.
Hallettsville grad signs to play with A&M-Kingsville
Hallettsville pitcher Colby Schindler had his junior season cut short by Tommy John surgery.
But Schindler returned as a senior and became the Most Valuable Player in District 26-2A. Schindler helped lead the Brahmas into the regional quarterfinals and has signed a letter-of-intent to continue his baseball career at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
"Toward the end of the season, I really felt like I was back to where I was," Schindler said. "I was gaining strength through the season and I felt like I had gotten my strength back."
Schindler pitched 77 innings and yielded only 48 hits and 22 walks, while recording 126 strikeouts. He had a 9-5 record with two saves, and a 1.40 earned run average.
Schindler played shortstop when he wasn't pitching. He hit .370 with one home run, one triple, eight doubles and 24 RBI. Schindler scored 28 runs and stole a team-leading 27 bases.
"I like that they are recruiting people close to the area," Schindler said of the Javelinas, who are coached by Cuero graduate Jason Gonzales. "They've been on top before. I think they are recruiting some good people and I'm looking forward to getting back to winning a conference championship."

ADA — In recent years, East Central University’s athletic department had very little to ‘wow’ prospective recruits who visited the campus.
Norris Field is approaching its eighth decade as the home of ECU football, the Elvan George Building — which formerly housed both the school’s weight training facilities and football locker room — was starting to show its age, and the Kerr Activites Center is about to enter its fourth decade as the venue for Tiger basketball and, more recently, volleyball.
As a result, ECU’s coaches had almost nothing to point to when comparing their facilities to those of other schools in the Lone Star Conference, and those shortcomings consistently translated into more losses than wins in virtually every sport.
But when the 2009-2010 school year begins in August, the playing field — at least where it relates to recruiting — will be slanted a little more in ECU’s favor.
Gilmer's Johnson confirms transfer from OU to ACU
Abilene, Texas (Abilene Reporter) - Justin Johnson made it official. The former Oklahoma running back said Friday that he will transfer to Abilene Christian University this fall.
"I talked to the coach (Friday)," he said. "I committed today."
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Johnson got little playing time last year as a freshman with the Sooners. He rushed 14 times for 24 yards and no touchdowns. Johnson didn't expect to see much time on the field his sophomore year, either, playing behind senior Chris Brown and junior DeMarco Murray, each of whom ran for more than 1,000 yards last season.
"Oklahoma was great. It was a great school," Johnson said. "I didn't leave because I had problems or anything. I was doing great in academics. I feel like I was putting in some hard work, and I was doing great in the weight room and everything," Johnson said. But "with DeMarco and Chris there, two great running backs, I felt like I wasn't going to get my time to shine. I want to put myself in a position where I can get on the field and play."

Former Oklahoma running back Justin Johnson has committed to play college football at Abilene Christian University and will begin the transfer process immediately.
Johnson, from Gilmer, had 14 carries for 24 yards his freshman year.
Johnson told KTBB's David Smoak, "I heard good things about Abilene Christian before I left, but as soon as I stepped on their campus it was unbelievable." Johnson continued, "The guys on their team and coaching staff are unbelievable, it's beyond football, all of them took me under their wing and welcomed me with open arms and I am excited about being apart of their family."

Cornelsen hopes to jump start NSU offense
In Northeastern State head football coach Kenny Evans’ first season, the RiverHawks struggled offensively and finished last in the Lone Star Conference in total offense at just 259 yards per game.
In an effort to jump start the offense, Evans decided to bring in someone he was familiar with in the offseason.
That is why in January, Oklahoma State graduate assistant Brad Cornelsen was hired to take over the position of offensive coordinator.

Scott, Brister named LSC Athletes of Year

RICHARDSON , Texas – Abilene Christian’s Bernard Scott and West Texas A&M’s Emily Brister were chosen as the 2009 Lone Star Conference Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively. The awards were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league’s sports information directors.
ACU’s Scott earned LSC top male athlete acclaim after winning the Harlon Hill Award following the Wildcats LSC championship and quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs. WTAMU’s Brister claimed the honor of top female athlete in the conference for the fourth consecutive year after helping the Lady Buffs win the LSC and NCAA South Central Regional titles.
Scott received the most votes followed by Midwestern State basketball standout Nolan Richardson and West Texas A&M football star Charly Martin. Brister grabbed the women’s award ahead of Texas A&M-Commerce basketball star Britney Jordan and Angelo State track & field standout Adree Lakey.
Scott completed one of the greatest careers in both LSC and Wildcat history in 2008. He capped his career by winning the Harlon Hill Award as the top player in NCAA Division II football. He led ACU to just the second perfect regular season in program history (10-0), the program's first outright LSC championship since 1973, a third straight berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs, a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs, and the highest Division II ranking (No. 2) ever achieved by ACU.
The All-LSC South Division first-teamer and Offensive Back of the Year, was also a first team Daktronics all-Super Region 4 selection and that team's Offensive Player of the Year. Scott was also first team all- America by the American Football Coaches' Association, Daktronics, Don Hansen's Football Gazette and d2football.com, and he won the Ron Lenz Award as the Daktronics Offensive Player of the Year. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Brister concluded her remarkable career as one of the most decorated women's basketball player to ever grace the LSC hardwoods. Despite a season-ending knee injury, Brister averaged 21.6 points per game and came within 125 points of breaking the LSC career scoring record as the Lady Buffs won the LSC and NCAA South Central Regional championships to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in 12 seasons. She holds 10 school records and is the only WTAMU basketball player to surpass the 2,000 points scoring mark with 2,645 points, which is the second highest total ever in the LSC. Brister is the conference career leader in steals and made free throws as well.
During her four years Brister received multiple honors including: State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team, WBCA/Kodak first team and all-America honorable mention (three times), Daktronics All-American first-team (three times), South Central Region Player of the Year (three times) and first team all-region (four times), LSC Female Athlete of the Year (four times), LSC South Division Player of the Year (four times) and first-team (four times), LSC Academic Player of the Year (three times) and Fred Jacoby Academic Athlete of the Year (two times).

DCTF's 50th Summer magazine on store racks all across Texas.
When you consider how humble its beginnings were, it's amazing Dave Campbell's Texas Football has managed to make it to a Golden Anniversary.
But here we are, celebrating our 50th summer edition magazine -- and in grand style, no less. Colt McCoy, Texas' record-setting quarterback, adorns our cover and sets the tone for a book laden with bold predictions. Texas winning a national championship, TCU breaking into a BCS bowl, Baylor ending a postseason drought and Houston hoisting a conference championship; some people say it’s far-fetched, but we think it's just a perfect storm of extraordinary teams and once-in-a-lifetime talents.
If you have already bought the book and are looking for the expanded playoff brackets we promised, you can find them below. Oklahoma running back Justin Johnson will transfer to Abilene Christian University to this fall, according to a report in the Oklahoman on Friday.

The indictment stems from allegations that Leaf broke into an apartment in Canyon in October and stole a painkiller from a WT football player. Leaf resigned as WT quarterbacks coach in November.
Leaf will have to answer these charges, as Randall County District Attorney James Farren has little choice to make sure the law is followed.
Rosato named new ECU head baseball coach
ADA, OK – After guiding Bacone College to a runner-up finish in the NAIA’s Red River Athletic Conference this past spring, Dino Rosato has been named the new head baseball coach at East Central University, it was announced Friday.
Rosato led the Warriors to a 29-20 finish this past season, including a second-place finish to Northwood (Texas) and a 10-5 mark in the RRAC regular season. It was Rosato’s first season as Bacone head coach after serving three years as an assistant at the Muskogee institution.
In his three years as an assistant the Warriors were one of the top teams in the RRAC with an impressive 41-14 record during the 2008 campaign.
“I’m extremely excited about this opportunity. East Central is a class organization and a step up,” said Rosato. “I’m glad to help represent ECU and I know we’ll continue the positive direction that Coach Hurt had on the baseball diamond.”
He replaces Mike Hurt, who stepped down as ECU head coach in May after three seasons.
“I look forward to the challenge at East Central,” Rosato said. “The Lone Star Conference is one of the best leagues in the nation and I look forward to hitting the recruiting trail soon.”

Northeastern State's Joel Eusebio has been drafted by the Oakland A's with the 1,383rd pick in the Major League Baseball Draft. Eusebio, a 2nd team LSC performer, hit .350 with 12 home runs and 54 RBI in 2009 and had 28 home runs, 145 RBI and scored 134 runs in his four year NSU career.
Eusebio joins Sam Strickland of Texas A&M Kingsville as the only two players from the Lone Star Conference drafted in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft.
OU football: Justin Chaisson to join team, Justin Johnson transferring
After days of speculation and Internet rumors about Johnson leaving, Stoops confirmed to reporters during the Sooner Caravan in Dallas that Johnson was gone.

Johnson was ranked the No. 2 high school running back in the nation by Scout.com at Gilmer (Texas) High School and was a U.S. Army All-American. He reportedly told an Austin radio station he intends to transfer to Division II Abilene Christian.
DA says Leaf is 'stalling'
Former NFL quarterback and West Texas A&M football coach Ryan Leaf has less than a week to return to Texas before deputies are sent to Canada to retrieve him.
Leaf has been in a drug rehabilitation program in Canada, said his attorney, William Kelly.
Randall County Criminal District Attorney James Farren said if Ryan Leaf does not turn himself in by Monday or Tuesday, he will begin the extradition process.
"If he wants to play games, we'll do it the hard way. ... We are tired of waiting," Farren said. "We are only going to play this game so long. From Ryan Leaf's point of view, we are under two minutes in the fourth quarter. The game is just about over."
Big cheering section expected for 'King Leonidas'

Though all the players in the 72nd Oil Bowl will get their fair share of support from the fans, the biggest cheering section will undoubtedly be for Waco Reicher’s Kenneth Cluley, a Wichita Falls native.
“There’s probably 30 to 35 Cluleys in the Wichita Falls area,” said Kenneth Cluley’s dad Joe, “and I don’t think any of us are going to miss it.”
Joe Cluley coached at Wichita Falls High School for two seasons from 1990-1991 and Kenneth was born just before the start of his first season with the Coyotes.
“He has some great stories about that time and still has highlight films from the teams he coached here,” Kenneth Cluley said. “And since I’ve got a whole lot of family here, I’m always up visiting.”

I just received a text from David Smoak of smoaky.com. He just got off the phone with Justin Johnson and has this quote on his website:

Johnson, a sophomore who will be eligible to play immediately at the NCAA Division II program, told KTBB's David Smoak, "I'm relieved the process is over, a lot of pressure is off my back, I loved Oklahoma and I was very proud to be part of the Sooner family," Johnson continued, "and I'm also proud of how I progressed through their system athletically and academically, but it was time for me to move in a different direction, and I'm so excited about going to Abilene.

Hood -- who took over the ACU program in August 2005 -- will be the head track and field and cross country coach at Brownwood. His final day at ACU will be July 17.
"I want to express my appreciation to Coach Hood for his service to our program while at ACU and wish he and his family the best as he moves into his new role at Brownwood High School," ACU director of athletics Jared Mosley said. "He has continued to build on the rich track and field history we have experienced at ACU and I know he will do well in serving the student-athletes and community at Brownwood."

"Honestly, for about four or five years, I've been struggling with balancing the profession and the fatherhood and being a husband," Hood said. "I've been praying really hard that it would work out here, that we could stay here and I could still do what I felt like I needed to do as a husband. Boy, a few weeks ago, Bob Shipley called me down at Brownwood and said, 'Hey, I've got a deal for you.'
"For me, it's just an answer to prayer. I've got three girls, the oldest is 13, with five years left on my house, and I just don't want to miss what I'd have to miss if I stayed here and did this job right. I just don't feel like I can do both right."
Hood and his wife, Rachel, have three daughters -- Victoria Rose, 13, Julianne Renee, 11, and Annabeth Dawn, 6.

The ACU track teams were penalized by the NCAA earlier this school year for several infractions. The teams, along with the football team, were put on probation for two years. Hood said none that played into his decision to step down. He doesn't expect the penalties will hurt the track teams either.
"I don't think it will make any difference," he said. "I think we weathered the first year of it, and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel here. I think it's going to be a great situation to walk into, actually."

State of the Scoop Address
Hey guys,
Just wanted to thank all of you that have made purchases from the store recently. I never dreamed this many of them would be going this long before the season starts. We've received a lot really good comments from all of you regarding the quality of the shirts and how fast they were shipped out. It looks like our partnership with Spreadshirt.com is going to work out really well.
ALSO - remember to send us any ideas that you would like to see in the store (phrases, different colors of a particular item, etc). I'm going to be adding a few new ones here in the next few days thanks to an idea from Chrisattsu. I'll list them all here each time I add something new so you don't have to go checking the store to see what has been added. I'm planning on coming up with some specific game-related shirts for the bigger games this year (Wagon Wheel, ACU/WT, etc). Let me know if you have a particular game you want one made for. WT Fans, you might wanna get on the ball here and give me some ideas. The "93 points. Any questions?" shirts are going like crazy, and I've heard they will definitely be worn during the ACU/WT game this year.
Don't forget that this coming Monday, June 15th, the 50th anniversary edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine will be on newsstands. The LSC Scoop was asked to provide all of the Lone Star Conference information in the magazine and we are really excited about it. It appears that they gave us more space than in the past editions. We are also VERY proud that the LSC Scoop was the first "blog" ever allowed to write for the publication that has been around for half a century.
I think that says a LOT about the quality of our work here and our credibility in the industry, and the fact that "blogs" are now accepted as actual media members. Especially considering they will be all that is left of sports reporting in 10 years when all of the newspapers are bankrupt and have moved on to websites. *wink wink nudge nudge*
There will be a 30 minute show on Fox Sports Southwest this Sunday night at 10 pm covering this year's magazine, releasing who will be on the cover, and going over it's history. Should be pretty interesting.
We also have some big news possibly coming soon regarding a Title Sponsor of the Scoop. This is going to allow us to do a LOT of the things we were really hoping we could do (weekly LSC podcasts, contests, etc) but needed financial help to make them happen. We think we have found a really good/obvious fit. Now that the Title Sponsor appears to be filled, we still have the weekly podcasts/podcast website looking to be sponsored, and sidebar links are now available as well. If you are interested in any of those, let me know.
We are also looking for people interested in possibly covering particular sports for us. At the present time, we have Football, Basketball and Soccer covered for 2009-2010. But we would love for anyone interested in being "the guy/gal" that covers Baseball, Track, etc to shoot me an email and let me know. We're trying to have someone in charge of each particular sport so that every single one of them gets the coverage/discussion they deserve. We're not looking for Bob Costas....if you're interested in a particular LSC sport and think it would be fun to cover it for this year, let me know.

Angelo State juniors Chris Adamson and Keith Towne were named by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) to its All-America team released Thursday afternoon.
Four Wildcats honored
ABILENE -- Four ACU baseball standouts have been voted to two more all-America baseball teams, which were released Friday. Junior relief pitcher Brad Rutherford and senior catcher Jordan Schmitt were each voted to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association team, while Schmitt, senior outfielder Thomas Bumpass and junior shortstop Willie Uechi were each voted to the Daktronics all-America team.

On Day 1 of (t)raining camp, Dalton Bell proved to be the rare quarterback who does not insist upon protection. Bell was offered coverage, in the form of an umbrella, in the early stages of an interview after the Saskatchewan Roughriders concluded practice Sunday on Taylor Field.
"No, we're good,'' Bell said, cordially.
Then the skies opened up. In good conscience, I could not allow an interviewee to be saturated -- and my column to be washed away in the process. So I pulled out the umbrella and attempted to keep both of us dry. The downpour was momentary, so I gracefully dropped the umbrella, along with my notes. As I fumbled around, Bell was thoughtful enough to pick up my roster.
So why am I telling you this? It is, after all, a trivial detail. But little things often reveal the most about a person.
He is, I discovered, as advertised.

Dave Campbell's Texas Football Coming Soon !!!
06/02/2009The "unofficial" beginning of the 2009 football season is near.
The 2009 summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football is set to hit newsstands starting June 15th. This upcoming edition marks the 50th anniversary of DCTF magazine, a summer-time staple in Texas that first published in 1960.
Throughout the 2009 DCTF, the magazine commemorates the previous 50 years with "flashbacks" remebering the past players, coaches and games. All of that will lead up to our special release: The 50th Anniversary Commemorative Edition, due on newsstands this fall.
But that will come soon enough. Until then, the 2009 summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football is available for pre-order by clicking here, or pick up a copy at your local book-seller or grocery store starting June 15th.

2008-09 LSC Scholar-Athletes announced
The annual Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winners for 2008-09 were announced on Wednesday, with 29 student-athletes honored by league officials.
Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at each member institution. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year.
To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and must have exhausted their athletic eligibility.
Besides representing each of the league's 15 member institutions, this year's recipients represent nine of the 16 sports that are sponsored by the conference. Basketball had the most Scholar-Athletes with five selections.
The 2008-09 Scholar-Athletes led their respective teams to four conference championships and two LSC divisional titles.
Texas is home for 12 of the honorees, with eight from Oklahoma, two from New Mexico and one each from Utah, Kentucky, Louisiana, Canada, France, Chile and Poland.

More ASU players likely to feel the draft

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A year ago, Angelo State baseball players Clay Calfee and Shan Sullivan made history by becoming the first two Rams to be selected in the Major League Basebal draft.
By this time next week, they could be joined by three or four members of this year’s ASU squad.
Calfee and Sullivan were both selected by the Dodgers last season — Calfee in the 14th round and Sullivan in the 32nd round. Calfee is still in the Dodgers’ organization. He saw some time with the big-leaguers in a spring training game in March.
Sullivan was released by the Dodgers and will spend his summer playing with the San Angelo Colts.
Both were standouts at ASU, helping lead the team to the Division II World Series two years ago. This year’s team had its share of standouts as well and at least two of them and as many as four are likely to be drafted next week.
First on the list is pitcher Joe Key. Key went to Tampa, Fla., two weeks ago to work out for some teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays.
Catcher Trey Carter is also likely to be picked. He said he has gotten interest from a few teams, including the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs.
Kenny Elkind has also drawn some interest from a few major league clubs. One of the best pitchers in the Lone Star Conference, Elkind has the ability to dominate opponents.

Fred Jacoby Academic Athletes of the Year announced
West Texas A&M basketball star Emily Brister and Central Oklahoma baseball standout Andrew Foshee were chosen as the 2009 Lone Star Conference Fred Jacoby Academic Athletes of the Year. The awards were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league's sports information directors.
WTAMU's Brister and UCO's Foshee are just the second recipients of the award bearing the name of Jacoby, the long-time LSC commissioner who passed away in March 2008. The nominees included the Academic Player of the Year in each sport as selected during the year.

Angelo State's Aisha Adams and Adree Lakey, Tarleton State's Jared McNeil and Abilene Christian's Camille Vandendreissche were selected as the 2009 Lone Star Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Year. The awards were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league's head coaches.
The Texans McNeil was the male track recipient and the Wildcat's Vandendreissche was voted top male field athlete, while the Rambelles duo of Adams and Lakey claimed the top female track and field honors, respectively.
