Cameron 83, Dallas Christian 54 - box score - Aggies put an end to Crusaders
LAWTON, Oklahoma (December 9) – With a big 83-54 win over the Dallas Christian Crusaders (1-15) tonight, the Cameron Aggie men’s basketball team (6-1) stayed perfect at home in the Aggie Gym. The CU men stayed in control throughout the contest and continued their hot start to the 2009-2010 season.

NATHAN WRIGHT: Plenty of Brooks' 200 wins were big ones
Saturday afternoon at the Junell Center, Angelo State women’s basketball coach Sally Brooks earned her 200th victory at ASU when the Rambelles defeated Cameron 74-52. The win came in her 10th season at the school. Not only is she the longest-tenured Rambelle basketball coach, but she became the winningest coach in her fourth season when she won her 83rd game, surpassing Peggy Till, who won 82 games from 1986-1990.
Brooks came to ASU prior to the 2000-01 season after spending nine years at Incarnate Word. She compiled a 155-106 record in nine seasons there.
When she came to ASU, she immediately started winning.
Thompson excelling off bench at Midwestern St.
Even when Cierra Thompson is not on the basketball court, she’s still in the game. The Llano High School graduate, Midwestern State’s versatile reserve, uses almost as much energy while waiting for coach Noel Johnson to insert her into the game as she does when she’s on the court.
“Whenever Cierra is on the bench, her anxiety gets a little high,” Johnson said. “She just can’t sit still, because she wants to win so bad. That’s the type of kid you want in your program.”
“I try to sit at the front of the bench, so coach sees me and I can be one of the first ones in,” Thompson said. “Maybe she’ll trip over me and send me in.”
College Notebook: Ex-player part of texanns' hoops rise
It has been 27 years since the Tarleton State women started a season 7-0. Misty Wilson has been around for 12 of those seasons.
A decorated player for the TexAnns, Wilson became the team’s top assistant coach during the 2002-03 season, one year before Ronnie Hearne was named the head coach.
“This is a very intense team,” Wilson said of a team whose average victory margin this season is 35.6 points. “They play hard for each other. It’s tough for this team to get down and go through rough patches. There are five girls out there (on the floor) and nine yelling for them. This is a special team with a special chemistry off the court as well as on the court.”

Lady Buffs sign three prep basketball players
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs have announced the signing of three high school basketball players, head coach Krista Gerlich said. WT signed Canyon's Jordan Vessels, Sudan's Lacee Logan and Wall's Sally Higgins.
''Vessels is a great sign for us because No. 1, she's local, so our fans will already know her,'' Gerlich said. ''No. 2, she is a 6-foot perimeter player that has a really nice jump shot and who understands the game.''
Logan, a 6-0 forward, earned TABC and TGCA all-state recognition as a freshman and junior. She is averaging 31 points and 11.5 rebounds for Sudan, the defending Class 1A Division I state champion. Higgins is a 5-6 point guard and a two-time TGCA all-state player.
Monsters in the middle
GILMER — Tackle by Mikey Wilson. Tackle by Luis Castro.
Those announcements have been common at Gilmer football games this year with Wilson the middle linebacker or Castro the defensive tackle making plays on their own, and sometimes together. Wilson and Castro are Gilmer's monsters in the middle, the heart of the defense which has helped the Buckeyes advance to Saturday's Class 3A Division I state championship game against Abilene Wylie.
(Wilson is receiving interest from Tulsa, Missouri Southern, Emporia State and UTSA, while Castro says he has received some intererest from Montana State, Angelo State and Harding.)

Lindholm All-American

After a mind-boggling 64-yard field goal at the end of regulation in a national playoff game and a game-winning 55-yarder at the buzzer of a regular season contest, it's no surprise Tarleton kicker Garrett Lindholm was a candidate forNCAA Division II All-America honors. Lindholm was named a second-team All-American by Daktronics when honors were announced Tuesday afternoon.
"I'm pretty ecstatic to be recognized along with some of the top players in the nation," Lindholm said. "You look at those lists when you're younger as a freshman and sophomore and you hope to get on them someday, so to make it is pretty special."
Special not only for him, but for the Tarleton football program as a whole.
"The guys that make the All-America teams are all great players and they usually play for great teams or they wouldn't get recognized like that," Lindholm said. "It's good when people look at those lists and see that Tarleton has someone there. It shows them that we can play with the big dogs."
The senior from Pflugerville broke a school record for longest field goal with his 55-yarder to beat Midwestern State 31-28 on Oct. 10. Little did anyone know at the time he was just warming up. Lindholm saved his best performance for the post season, hitting a Division II playoff record 64-yard field goal as time expired to send an opening round game into overtime at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Texans eventually won 57-56 in the second overtime.
The 64-yard field goal is a yard longer than the NFL record and the second longest field goal at any level to be kicked without the use of a tee. The longest was a 65-yard shot by Martin Gramatica for Kansas State in 1998. He also hit a 27-yard chip shot in the first overtime at Kingsville, and was 2-2 on three-point kicks in the second round at Central Washington.
When it was all said and done, Lindholm was 15-18 on field goals for the season, including a perfect 10-10 from inside 40 yards. He was 5-8 from 40-49 yards and 2-2 from beyond 50. He went 43-45 on extra point attempts and drilled 22 touchbacks with an average kickoff distance of 63.4 yards.
Lindholm was not recognized on the American Football Coaches Association All-America team as that honor went to Greg Zuerlein of Nebraska-Omaha. First-team accolades on the Daktronics team, which is voted on by sports information directors, went to Chadron State's Travis Atter.
Zuerlein was 17-23 on field goal attempts including 12-14 inside 40 yards and just 4-8 from beyond 40. His long was 52. He did have more touchbacks (30) and a slightly longer average off the tee (64.6) than Lindholm. Atter was 18-24 on field goals. He was 10-12 inside 40 and 8-12 from over 40. Like Zuerlein, his season long was 52 yards. Atter had just seven touchbacks off the tee.
"I know some people feel that way," Lindholm said when asked if it was a shocker to not be named to the first-team. "Personally if I got honorable mention it would have been enough for me. I've just always wanted to make (the All-America team). Getting first-team would be nice, but for people to say you're the second best in the entire nation is still nice."
The honor came after Lindholm had already been named first-team all-conference and all-region. Lindholm helped the Texans to a 10-3 record, just the third 10-win season in school history. They reached theDivision II playoffs for the third time and won a post season game for just the second time since joining Division II in 1994. Tarleton also won a share of the Lone Star Conference league-wide title for the second time and a share of the LSC South championship for the third time.
R.J. Brisbon and William Green to Participate in 2010 Cactus Bowl
Texas A&M University-Commerce senior football players R.J. Brisbon andWilliam Green have been selected to participate in the 2010 Valero CactusBowl to be played at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M Universityat Kingsville on January 8, 2010.
Brisbon earned Lone Star Conference North Division Offensive Lineman of theYear honors for a second-straight year earlier this year. Green, who was named Daktronics Second Team All-American on Tuesday, wasalso named the Lone Star Conference North Division Defensive Lineman of theYear in 2009. He led the team with 18.5 tackles for loss and 9 sacks.
Let the guessing game begin, again
The excitement is really picking up as to who the next head football coach at Sam Houston State is going to be after the list of 12 candidates was released Tuesday. Well, unfortunately that list is now down to 11. I made some phone calls Wednesday and found out Duke defensive coordinator Mike MacIntrye has pulled his name out of the running. That’s too bad. MacIntrye had an impressive résumé and would have been a good hire for Sam Houston.
So unless a solid applicant shows up to the party late, the Bearkats’ next head coach will be one of these 11 guys: Kansas wide receivers coach David Beaty, New Mexico offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey, Central Missouri head coach Willie Fritz, University of Alabama-Birmingham offensive coordinator Kim Helton, Miami secondary coach Wesley McGriff, Texas A&M-Commerce head coach Guy Morriss, University of Houston co-offensive coordinator Jason Phillips, Klein Oak High School head coach Dave Smith, former longtime Texas high school head coach Ross Rogers, Abilene Christian University head coach Chris Thomsen and Washington Redskins tight ends coach Scott Wachenheim.

Chris Thomsen — Thomsen has had a lot of success at Division II Abilene Christian University in his five seasons as head coach. The Wildcats have made the playoffs four straight years and advanced to the second round in 2009. He has an overall record of 42-17 and guided ACU to the Lone Star Conference championship in 2008 when the Wildcats finished the regular season with a 10-0 mark.Over the past three seasons, ACU has boasted one of the top offenses in Division II. In 38 games, the Wildcats averaged a whopping 43.24 points per game. The defense hasn’t been too shabby either, especially in 2009. ACU held opponents to 19.7 points per game and 291.4 yards of total offense. Before joining the Wildcats, Thomsen was the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Central Arkansas (2003-04). That’s a plus because the Bears have had some talented student-athletes come through that program, which teams in the SLC know firsthand since UCA joined the league in 2006. The only thing that might hurt Thomsen’s chances are that the Bearkats went the D-II route with their last hire and that didn’t work out too well. But you have to throw that out the window because that doesn’t mean Thomsen won’t be successful at SHSU. Again, the key for Thomsen will be how qualified the staff is that he would bring with him. Experience is important and you need veteran coaches who can develop the young players.
ACU's Thomsen on Sam Houston St. coaching list
Abilene Christian University football coach Chris Thomsen is a candidate for the Sam Houston State football job.
“At this point, it’s very preliminary,” Thomsen said. “Sam Houston is assessing their interest in various candidates, and I was one of those people. That’s about all it is right now. There’s no formal interview set or anything like that at this point. I just think they’ve got a list of people that they’re trying to do some research on and talk to.”
Thomsen said he expects a call this morning concerning the school’s interest about a possible on-campus interview.
Thomsen wrapped up his fifth season as ACU’s head coach, leading the Wildcats (9-4) to their fourth-straight trip to the playoffs.
“I love ACU,” Thomsen said. “I love everything about the school. The administration has been great to us as a staff and has given us the things we need to be successful. I love it. I’m very happy where I’m at. If people express interest like Sam Houston, then you listen. If you think it’s an opportunity that you need to look at, then you do. It’s no more than that.”

MSU has 4 women on all-region team
Midwestern State junior midfielder Kendra Clemons headlined a group of four Mustangs on the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America All-South Central Region team released Wednesday afternoon.
Clemons earned second-team honors, while seniors Kari Bristow, Kat Bernick and Jaime Pompey garnered third-team honors.

NSCAA Announces Postseason National Rankings
he NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) has announced their postseason national rankings and the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M finish the season in the sixth spot while the Buffs finish at #11.
