WT advances with 4-game win
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs were tested Thursday in their NCAA Division II Tournament volleyball quarterfinal with the California (Pa.) Vulcans but found a way to advance.
The No. 5 Lady Buffs (38-3) spent much of the match finding out what was going to work in their 21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 win against the Vulcans (36-6) at the Gangelhoff Center, home of top-seeded host Concordia-St. Paul. WT advances to take on Flagler (Fla.) - which is making its first semifinal appearance - at 5 p.m. today.
"This whole match for everybody was just a game of adjustments," WT senior middle blocker Melissa Harper said. "We were just trying to figure out what would work, and we'd find it, go through it and try something else."

Kanza Bowl: Flemming's Return Sparks West Texas A&M Turnaround
The first six games resulted in five losses, with a scoring average of just 21 points a game. The last five games have seen five straight wins, with the offense scoring nearly 45 points per outing.
So what's the biggest difference for the West Texas A&M turnaround? You don't have to look very far. It's no coincidence that senior running back Keithon Flemming has played just five games this year - the last five - and has directly impacted the Buffaloes offense in a major way.
While there are many other reasons WTAMU has turned things around and will play in Saturday's Lower Kanza Bowl against Nebraska-Omaha in Topeka, Kan., the biggest reason has to be Flemming. After suffering a dislocated elbow injury in the final scrimmage before the start of the season, Flemming immediately thought his playing days were done.
"I've never had an injury to this extent, so the first thing that pops into my head is that my career is over," Flemming said. "I've never been one to have an injury keep me out of playing, so I really didn't know how to react to it. I thought at first I wasn't going to play anymore."
After rough start, West Texas A&M earns Kanza Bowl berth
Six games into this season, West Texas A&M’s football team had sunk about as low as the deepest part of the Panhandle’s famed Palo Duro Canyon. Expectations associated with annual trips to the playoffs and a high national preseason ranking disappeared in the dust storm of a 1-5 start.
But West Texas A&M kept working, its hobbled quarterback steadily improved and running back Keithon Flemming eventually returned. With their star runner back, the Buffaloes more than salvaged their season, winning their last five games to claim a share of the Lone Star Conference South Division title. And though a sixth consecutive NCAA Division II playoff appearance didn’t happen, the Buffaloes got a nice consolation prize.
Bowl new for Kanza entries
As participants in the NCAA Division II playoffs each of the previous four years, Nebraska-Omaha and West Texas A&M had sole focus on the game at hand. The Mavericks and Buffaloes face a different postseason scenario this year, meeting in the inaugural Kanza Bowl at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hummer Sports Park.
"Our players are pretty excited about this," UNO coach Pat Behrns said at a press conference Thursday. "Hopefully that carries over to their play on Saturday. We're looking forward to it. I look around the country and see 60-plus Division I teams all excited about going to bowls, so why can't we? It's a great reward for our team and something we've never done before."

Gholson: Believe it: This 8-0 MSU squad is the real thing
Many people — including yours truly — were doubting this Midwestern State basketball team. Yeah, yeah, the Mustangs were off to a 7-0 start, but that record may have been more of an indicator of how bad the competition had been rather than how good this MSU bunch was going to be.
Trinity? Jarvis Christian. St. Somebody again and again and again. I refused to become a believer until I saw the Mustangs beat a real team. That real team showed up at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night.
Central Oklahoma had won 111 games, four Lone Star Conference North Division titles and made four NCAA Division II playoff appearances in the last five years. The Bronchos were 24-6 a year ago and had seven players back from that team. They had won crossover games against MSU last year and the year before that. And just two nights ago, UCO wiped out a 12-point Tarleton State lead with 14 minutes to go and beat the Texans 76-72 in Stephenville.
“This will be a barometer of where we are at,” MSU coach Grant McCasland said before Thursday’s opening tip.
Mustangs run wild in win over Bronchos
The Central Oklahoma Bronchos are known for their offense — they’re usually one of the highest-scoring teams in the Lone Star Conference. But Thursday night in D.L. Ligon Coliseum, the Midwestern State Mustangs were a little bit better.
Corbett leads Rams past Bulldogs in overtime
LaMarshall Corbett scored 30 points to rally the Angelo State men’s basketball team to an 82-72 overtime victory over Southwestern Oklahoma in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Thursday at the Junell Center.
The Rams rallied from a 31-25 halftime deficit to avenge a loss to the Bulldogs in the first round of last season’s LSC postseason tournament. With the win, ASU improved to 4-2 on the season. SWOSU fell to 2-4.
Davis scores nine in final OT
The West Texas A&M Buffs men's basketball team allowed 111 points Thursday night. And won. In a wild ride of a Lone Star Conference crossover basketball game, the Buffs remained unbeaten at home for the season, surviving a rare triple-overtime marathon to earn a 119-111 victory before 1,000 fans in the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
A&M-C men fall to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 72-62
Four members of the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team scored in double digits in a 72-62 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday night in Kingsville, Texas. A brief 5-0 spurt midway through the second half extended an advantage for host Texas A&M-Kingsville to a lead that they would not relinquish for the duration of the contest. The Lions rallied to get as close as three, 51-48, with 7:06 remaining before TAMUK extended its lead beyond a single possession and end hopes for a Lions comeback. Texas A&M-Kingsville (4-1) was led by Flavio Milam, who scored 22 points to lead the Javelinas. Joining him in double figures was Royce Gaye, who scored 16 and Antwan Mullins added 12 in the win.
ACU opens LSC play with crossover split with Cameron
Dernodo Eiland hit two free throws with one second left in the game to lift unbeaten Cameron over ACU 58-57 in a LSC men’s crossover game at Moody Coliseum. ACU’s Preston Davis hit two free throws to put ACU up 57-56 with 1.07 seconds left in the game, but Eiland was fouled on the inbounds pass and hit the two free throws to lift the Aggies to victory.
Tarleton men run away in second half

Effran Bryant and Devon Hills stepped up on the offensive end in the second half and tough defensive play took care of the rest as Tarleton State (5-1) bounced back from its first loss with a 61-47 thumping of Northeastern State (2-3) inLone Star Conference crossover play at Wisdom Gym Thursday night.
Bryant drilled back-to-back three-point field goals after Northeastern had pulled within five early in the second half and the Texans never looked back on their way to winning at least five of their first six games for the seventh time in eight years.
"(Bryant) gave us a big lift with those two shots," Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman said. "They had just hit a couple big shots to stay in the game and then he answered. I thought that little stretch in the first few minutes of the second half was the key."

Johnson dominates inside as Lady Buffs win by 41
For West Texas A&M Lady Buffs senior post C.C. Johnson, it's about finding a comfort level. Johnson, who struggled much of last season, surpassed her career-high point total for the second straight game, and WT, coupled with a superb defensive performance, ripped the East Central Lady Tigers, 86-45, Thursday before more than 500 at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.

Angelo State University sophomore Paige Weishuhn scored a career-high 29 points as the Rambelles opened Lone Star Conference crossover play with a 96-67 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday at the Junell Center.
ACU opens LSC play with crossover split with Cameron
Abilene Christian bounced back from a 16-point nonconference loss Monday to post a 77-66 women’s basketball crossover victory over Cameron to open Lone Star Conference play Thursday night in Moody Coliseum. ACU shot 48 percent as Jamie Meyer hit 11-of-12 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line for a game-high 26 points. Twin sister Jody had a double-double game, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. She also blocked six shots.

Wildcats sign 4 prep standouts
ACU head volleyball coach Kellen Mock announced recently that she has signed four high school players to binding national letters-of-intent, including two players that just helped Amarillo High School win its fourth straight Class 5A state championship.Outside hitter Madelyn Robinett and middle blocker Neely Borger were each two-year starters for the Sandies of Amarillo High and were major contributors to a pair of state championship teams. Also signing with the Wildcats were Llano High School middle blocker Allie Rostron and middle blocker Whitney Stevens of Lovejoy High School, which just won its second straight Class 3A state title.

ACU head tennis coach Hutton Jones announced recently that he has signed Abilene High standout Madelyn Waliker to a national letter-of-intent for the 2010-11 season.

ACU head coach Britt Bonneau announced recently that he has signed a Lake Travis High School pitcher to a national letter-of-intent for the 2011 season.Jason Harris will be a senior left-handed pitcher for the Cavaliers in 2010. A two-year letterwinner entering his senior season, Harris was part of the baseball team in 2008 that finished 30-10 and reached the region semifinals. Last year's team also reached the regional semifinals.

ACU head coach Chantiel Wilson announced recently that she has signed two high school players to national letters-of-intent for the 2011 season.J oining the Wildcats are Liberty Hill shortstop Siera Sproul and Canyon pitcher / outfielder Ashley Nolan.
Last season as a junior at Liberty Hill High School, Sproul hit .311 with four home runs, 21 RBI and 28 runs scored as she earned first team all-district honors. A starter since her freshman season, Sproul was a second team all-district selection each of her first two seasons.
Nolan has also been a starter since her freshman year at Canyon High School. Last year she hit .460 and was 21-8 with a 2.44 ERA in the circle, leading Canyon to a 30-9 record.
