ABILENE, Tex. — Since high school, Bernard Scott has been running for
another chance.
He did not play his senior season after being involved in an off-field
fight. He has been arrested at least five times and is finishing 18 months of
probation for giving false information to a police officer during a traffic
stop. He is attending his fourth college since 2003.

On talent alone, Scott could be a late first-day pick in April’s N.F.L.
draft, said Gil Brandt, a pro football analyst.
“Everybody likes him,” Brandt said. “But they all keep their mouths
shut.”

ABILENE, Tex. — As a young quarterback at Tulane in 2002, Billy Don Malone
developed a reputation as a first-round N.F.L. talent. His future was considered so secure that his coach called him C.E., for the contract extension that Malone would surely earn him.
But a heart problem ended Malone’s career at Tulane before it ever really
got off the ground, sending him into a downward spiral. He left the university
with a grade point average below 1.5 and with what he later acknowledged was a
marijuana habit. He soon found himself milking cows on an 800-acre dairy farm
while living with his mother in Paris, Tex.
Northwest defense ready to show its grown since loss to Abilene
MARYVILLE, Mo. — His red cap has become a fixture at Northwest Missouri
State football games. Primarily for visibility as he calls plays and maybe just
a little bit for luck, defensive coordinator Scott Bostwick always dons the
notable head wear on game day.
At Abilene Christian today, he may find out exactly how much magic that
hat contains.
Wildcats face another playoff rematch
The Abilene Christian University Wildcats find themselves in both brand new and
quite familiar situations today when they host Northwest Missouri State in an
NCAA Division II quarterfinal playoff.
The second-ranked Wildcats (11-0) make their first appearance in the third round of the NCAA playoffs when the third-ranked Bearcats (11-1) visit Shotwell Stadium for a noon kickoff. But for the second week in a row, ACU faces a rematch against an opponent it beat on the road during the regular season.

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats are the model program in
Division II football.
Since coach Mel Tjeerdsma took over the program in 1994, the Bearcats
have won 10 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles, two
national titles and played in five title games overall.
Abilene Christian University coach Chris Thomsen wouldn't mind
borrowing Tjeerdsma's blueprint.
