A freshman football player with the Midwestern State University football team was critically injured in a two-car collision late Friday, according to MSU Head Coach Bill Maskill.About midnight Friday, Jeff Williams of Lufkin and former player and MSU student Brett Davis of McKinney, Texas, were in a Ford Mustang that collided with a pickup driven by Albert Jackson Gee, 22.
Gee was arrested and charged with intoxication assault in connection with the accident that occurred at the intersection of Maplewood and Southwest Parkway.
His bond was set at $3,500, and he was free Saturday from the Wichita County
Jail.Both Williams and Davis were rushed to United Regional Health Care System’s 11th Street Campus, where Williams remains.
Davis was treated and released, but Williams is in intensive care, Maskill said in a phone interview Saturday afternoon.
United Regional listed Williams in stable condition.
“It’s heartbreaking to have anyone involved in an accident,” Maskill said. As a coach, “you feel like you’re responsible” when something happens to a player.
The coach got the call moments after the accident and called Williams’ parents, and then he said he went to the hospital.When he arrived, he saw the support that Williams had from fellow MSU players and students.
About 30 people, and not just MSU football players, were at Williams’ side.
“He’s well liked….. He’s a very quiet, unassuming kid,” Maskill said. “You wouldn’t know he was in a room if you were there with him.”
Williams’ family made the drive from southeast Texas to be at his side.
The freshman’s prognosis was unclear at press time, but Maskill heard a promising report from one of United Regional’s medical staff who told him Williams might be able to return to the field next year.Reporter Clayton J. Hein can be reached at HeinC(at)TimesRecordNews.com or by phone at (940)
