Tarleton State (9-11, 4-8) at Angelo State (15-5, 10-2)
Danny Morris loses his first game of the season as Angelo wins the series opener 6-2. Sean Winschler went 8 strong innings for the Rams and is now 5-0 on the season.
ASU takes game two 7-4 as Elkind wins his third game of the season, and Clay Calfee chips in with 3 rbi.
7-3 ASU in game three as Shan Sullivan drives in 3 runs to support Brett Nightengale's strong outing.
Angelo State sweeps the series with a 10-2 win in game four. Bradley Durst scattered 10 hits and went the distance allowing just 2 earned runs. Brian Rasberry hit his first home run of the season and drove in 4 runs .
The Texans are scoring right at 8 runs a game, while the Rams are putting up 7 per contest. Pitching-wise, ASU has a team ERA of 6.02, while Tarleton State's is at 8.20. However if you take out Danny Morris's numbers (4-0, 3.00 ERA) and TSU's era climbs to right at 10. Should be a lot of offense in San Angelo.
East Central (8-12, 5-7) at Central Oklahoma (14-4, 7-4)
Bronchos take the opener 9-1. Dean McIntyre improves to 3-0 as he goes the distance, giving up 5 hits and only one unearned run. Dustin Dailey knocked in 4 runs.
Another big win for UCO in game one, 14-2. Clint Straka throws 7 innings allowing one earned run, and Breck Draper hits 2 home runs and knocks in 5.
ECU takes game three, 11-10. Lucas Arment drove in 3 for the Tigers, including the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.
ECU salvages a series split winning game four, 14-13, as Dusty Rowland 4 hits and 4 rbi and Jared Owen 4 hits and 2 rbi to lead the Tiger offense. Breck Draper struggled on the mound for UCO, giving up 10 earned runs and 15 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.
This looks like a mismatch on paper. The Bronchos are first in the LSC in batting average and second in ERA. ECU is 12th in batting average and 8th in ERA. The Bronchos are ranked in the top 20 in both baseball polls.
West Texas A&M (5-11, 3-8) at Southwestern Oklahoma (6-10, 4-7)
WTAM takes the opener 8-4. Brian Schupp drove in 3 and scored 2, while Billy Zeleznak allowed just one earned run in 7 innings.
SWO takes game two 9-0, as Max Grocki throws a 2-hit shutout. Three Bulldogs each had 2 hits and drove in two as well.
Game 3 is a wild one, 21-20 for the Bulldogs. 7 Buffs drove in at least 2 runs, while Blain Perkins, Dakota Streber and Dakota James go a combined 11-18, scoring 7 runs and knocking in 11. WTAM scored 11 runs in the sixth inning
Game 4 is a pitchers duel in comparison, but SWO wins a 14-13 squeaker - Jonathan Fontenant has 5 rbi for SWO.
While the Buffs and Bulldogs are both in the lower half of the LSC in batting, they both have individuals enjoying great seasons so far. For WTAM, Brian Schupp is hitting .439, with an LSC leading 9 HRs and 22 RBIs. SWO's Dakota Streber is hitting .500 with 2 HRs, but only 8 RBIs in an offense not producing much. The Bulldog's pitching has been pretty good with an overall ERA of 5.24 (3rd in the LSC) and having faced ACU and TAMK.
Eastern New Mexico (10-6, 4-4) at Cameron (11-9, 5-7)
Cameron wins the opener 4-3 in 10 innings, as Josh Mathiesen hits a walk-off home run.
Tyler Hayes and Ethan Wagner each have 4 rbi to lead ENMU to a 15-13 win in game two, while Blake Watson drove in 5 for the Aggies.
Cameron responds with 4-0 victory in game 3. Brad Birchel throws a 4 hit shutout and Blake Watson continues his productive hitting with two more rbi.
For the third time this season, ENMU eclipses 20 runs in a game and split the series with Cameron as they win game four, 20-7. ENMU broke open a 3-3 tie with 7 runs in the sixth inning , including a grand slam by Freddy Carmona.
ENMU offense is averaging just over 11 runs a game and its a good thing, because they are allowing over 8. Cameron, meanwhile is in the middle of the pack both batting and pitching, despite playing a tougher schedule.
Southeastern Oklahoma (7-9, 6-6) at Northeastern State (7-9, 3-5)
SEO takes game one 10-6. Randall Clay hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 8th to put SEO ahead. NSU committed 4 errors, leading to 6 unearned runs.
Game 2 is a football score of 21-10 in favor of SEO. The Savage Storm trailed 10-2 after 4 innings, but busted loose for 19 runs the rest of the way. Josh Rorex hit 3 HRs and knocked in 6 runs.
NSU takes game 3, 9-6
SEO wins game four, 6-4. Tyler Johnson and Robbie Morris each had 2 run homers for SEO.
On paper, this series looks like it should be close. SEO has outscored their opponents by 13 runs so far, while NSU has a 12 run advantage. NSU took two from Central Missouri earlier and split two games with Ouchita Baptist, while SEO opened their season with Angelo State and also split two games with Ouchita Baptist, including a 23-2 rout in game one Tuesday. In fact these two teams have given OBU their only two losses this season.
Abilene Christian (9-9, 8-3) at Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-7, 7-5)
The Wildcats turned 4 double plays and took advantage of 12 walks by Javelina pitchers to take a 10-2 decision in game one. Bret Maynard struck out 7 in 6 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs. With the score tied in the sixth, Anthony Walsh hit a 3-run triple to give ACU the lead.
In game 2, with the score tied 5-5 after 7 innings, ACU breaks loose for 9 runs. Mike Elkerson hits a grand slam for the Wildcats.
Chris Wiman and Josh Livingston dueled for most of the night. In the end it was Livingston getting the win for TAMK, 3-2. ACU tied the score in the top of the seventh with a two-out double by William Uechi, but freshman Will Mettlach hit a walk off HR to lead off the bottom of the inning.
ACU blew open a 1-0 game in the fourth inning, scoring 7 unearned runs, and won game four 15-8. Matt Spotanski and J.J. Pacheco each drove in 3 runs for ACU.
Don't let ACU's 6-8 record fool you - three of the series opponents (Delta State, Southern Arkansas, and UCO) have a combined 33-7 record. Last weekend's series split could give them confidence down the road. TAMK's record is better than expected at this point, but their schedule hasn't been as challenging. This weekend will be their sternest test to date. Offensively the teams have performed equally so far, but there is a big difference in the pitching numbers so far. TAMK leads the LSC with an ERA of 3.66, while ACU is in the middle of the pack at 6.67.
