Four weeks of Lone Star Conference division play remain as teams aim for one of eight spots, four from both the North and South Division, in the LSC Championship to be held in Durant, Okla., May 6-7-8.
League action continued last week with Central Oklahoma and Tarleton State sweeping its conference series, while Northeastern State and Midwestern State won three of four games in the North Division and West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville took two of three contests in the South.
LSC softball teams are 288-220 overall, with a 145-116 mark in the South and 143-104 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 70-28 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 36-21 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Players of the Week
NORTH HITTER
Kacie Edwards, Central Oklahoma, Fr., Catcher, Yukon, Okla./Yukon HS
Edwards led UCO to a four-game LSC North Division sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma with a dominating week at the plate. The freshman catcher hit .667 with eight hits in 12 at bats, collecting five doubles, one home run and six RBI while also scoring seven runs. She had a blistering 1.333 slugging percentage with a .706 on-base percentage and was also perfect in the field with no errors in 14 chances. Edwards hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie and lift the Bronchos to a 6-5 road win over SWOSU in the first contest of the four-game series. She went 6-for-8 with five doubles and the homer in two wins that day.
NORTH PITCHER
Katie Petersen, Midwestern State, Sr., Pitcher, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS
Petersen’s third career perfect game highlighted another stellar week as the senior from Plano amassed a 3-0 mark and racked up her first save of the season while helping No. 3 Midwestern State to a 4-2 week. The right-hander fanned eight batters and put down each of the 15 hitters she faced in an 8-0 run-rule of East Central in five innings Wednesday afternoon. She would allow a single hit while logging six strikeouts in a 10-1 run-rule of Incarnate Word on Thursday. She struck out three in 1 1/3 relief innings during Game 1 on Saturday to preserve a 6-5 win over ECU before shutting down the Tigers again by out dueling Wanda Malone. Petersen allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts to earn a win in her 16th-straight decision. For the week, Petersen allowed one earned run on eight hits in 17 1/3 innings as she fanned 23 and walked two while limiting the opposition to a .129 batting average.
SOUTH HITTER
Kimberly LeComte, West Texas A&M, So., Outfielder, Boerne, Texas/Boerne HS
LeComte drove in five runs, scored five runs in five hits during the week’s contests highlighted by on triple and two home runs. LeComte went 1-for-2 at the plate with her one hit being a two run homer into center field in the 16-2 win over Texas-Permian Basin on March 31. LeComte provided the offensive spark the Lady Buffs needed in order to take win two of the three games against Angelo State this past weekend. In game one, she hit her 10th homer of the season in the Lady Buffs’ 3-1 victory over Angelo State on Friday, April 2. In the 5-0 shutout of Angelo State on April 3, LeComte tripled to left field and was the first Lady Buffs across the plate thanks to a Kristina Myles single.
SOUTH PITCHER
Marci Womack, West Texas A&M, So., Pitcher, Sulphur Springs, Texas/Sulphur Springs HS
Womack picked up three wins in three starts in the circle for West Texas A&M last week. The sophomore handed No. 8 Angelo State its first home loss in nearly a year, with seven-hit, five-strikeout effort to end a 23-game home winning streak for the Rambelles during Friday’s 3-1 game one victory. She followed up that performance with a complete game shutout win (5-0) over ASU on Saturday. Womack also earned a run-rule victory against UT-Permian Basin. She tossed a total of 16.1 innings allowing 16 hits and only two runs with 10 strikeouts. Womack improved to 11-6 overall and carries a 3.14 era on the season for the Lady Buffs.
