Four track and field student-athletes were named Lone Star Conference Athletes of the Week honors for their efforts last week, league officials announced today.

Amos Sang, Abilene Christian, Sr., Distance, Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus HS
Sang posted a time of 29:44.46 in the 10,000 meters last weekend at the Red Raider Open to finish second. ... However, with the altitude conversion, Sang’s time of 29:15.58 puts him atop the country in the event.

James Hardin, Abilene Christian, Sr., Multi-Event, Longview, Texas/Hallsville HS
Hardin won the decathlon at the 38th Annual David Noble Relays last week in San Angelo, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II outdoor national championship meet in the process. ... Hardin scored 6,699 points to easily qualify. ... Hardin, who was in third place behind Strothers and Weaver after Thursday’s first day of competition, made his move in the first event of the day when he won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.13 to collect 834 points and move into first place. ... He never relinquished the lead the rest of the day as he finished fourth in the discus, second in the pole vault and easily won the javelin throw to build a huge margin going into the final event, the 1500 meters. ... All Hardin had to do was finish the race to win the event and he did that, finishing sixth in 5:01.83.

Adams set the ASU record in the 400-meter hurdles as she won the event in a time of 57.94 at the ASU/David Noble Relays over the weekend. Adams’ time was a meet and track record and is top performance in the event in NCAA Division II this season. Adams holds five of the top marks in D-II this year so far, including in the triple jump (40-10.25), which she also set this past weekend.

Newby automatically qualified for next month’s NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet last Saturday with her performance at last week’s Red Raider Open. ... Newby finished second in the discus with a mark of 157-2, which is the top mark in the nation.

Abilene Christian's Cassie Carver was named Lone Star Conference Tennis Players of the Week for her performance last week, the league office announced today.

Cassie Carver, Abilene Christian, So., Oklahoma City, Okla.
Carver won her singles matches against St. Edward’s and Cameron by consecutive scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 5-7, 6-2, 10-6, respectively. Carver played at No. 4 singles where she only has one loss on the season and is 7-3 in her last 10 matches. She also teamed with Hannah Kelly for dominating 8-2 and 8-1 victories in No. 2 doubles. The tandem is 6-3 on the season at No. 2 doubles and 2-0 in the LSC.

Tennis Other Top Performers
Amanda Moberg, Cameron, led the nationally-ranked #33 Aggie women’s tennis team (14-7) to a berth in the NCAA Regional Championship tournament with a 3-2 team performance last week. Moberg, CU’s #1 singles and #1 doubles player, went 4-1 in singles over the week, and 3-2 in doubles for the week with partner Julia Puckhaber. Moberg dominated in her four singles wins this week, and nearly came away with yet another unblemished record. Her few losses were very close matches. As of this release Moberg was still the NCAA South Central region’s top ranked singles player, and 4th ranked doubles team.
Antonella Rossini, Central Oklahoma, delivered a singles win at #4 spot against East Central Nilsa Ramirez, and teamed up with Rose Cabato to get another win at #3 doubles for Bronchos.

Abilene Christian
The sixth-ranked nationally and top ranked regional team ACU won their only match of the week against St. Edward’s the No. 6 team in the region. The Wildcats now have 20 or more wins for the 11th consecutive season. With only one more match against Cameron this week ACU will look to win their third consecutive team title and seventh consecutive double championship with the tandem of Jaclyn Walker and Julia Mongin. ACU has only lost one match to an NCAA DII team ranked higher than #7 coming at the hands of West Florida who was No. 10 at the time. The rest of the Wildcats loses have came from teams ranked higher, or from Division I with the exception of Auburn-Montgomery who is No. 1 in NAIA. On the men’s side ACU is coming off a disappointing 5-4 loss to St. Edward’s in their only match of the week. The Wildcats were swept in doubles giving the Hilltoppers the victory. The loss drops ACU to 13-11 over all heading into their final match before the LSC Championships with Cameron University the two teams on the men’s side to battle for the conference title. After winning a program record 26 matches last season ACU will fall short of the 20 win plateau for the first time since 2003, a season in which they won 19 games.

Cameron’s nationally-ranked #23 men’s team is currently 16-8 on the year, while the #33 women’s squad has a record of 14-7... Both teams have already locked up a bid to the NCAA Regional tournament in May... Last week the CU women went 3-2 in five matches. In a swing through South Texas, the women defeated St. Edward’s 6-3 and St. Mary’s 5-1, but fell to Incarnate Word 5-4. CU then bounced back with a 5-4 win over Dallas Baptist, before losing to Abilene Christian 9-0 the very next day... Cameron’s men went 2-3 in their five matches last week against the same opponents as their female counterparts. CU fell to St. Edward’s 5-2 and to Incarnate Word 5-0. CU rebounded with a 5-3 win over St. Mary’s and an 8-1 win over Dallas Baptist, before being swept by Abilene Christian at home, 9-0... Since this week’s women’s quad match at Northeastern State has been cancelled, the 2009-2010 regular season has come to an end for both Cameron Aggie tennis teams. The next action for both squads will be at the annual Lone Star Conference Championship tournament April 23-24 in Oklahoma City. Regardless of how CU performs in the LSC event, the Aggies will move on to the first round of the NCAA Regional Championship tournament (May 6-8).
Tarleton State
The TexAnns dropped a pair of LSC matches this week, falling 5-3 to Midwestern State and then 5-4 to Northeastern State. Tarleton ends conference match-play at 4-3. Tarleton heads into its season finale with St. Edward’s this Saturday at 12-7 overall. The TexAnns and Hilltoppers will play at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts in Stephenville.
