Three weeks remain in conference play. In the North, Midwestern State and Central Oklahoma are very close to clinching two of the playoff spots, while Southwestern Oklahoma and Cameron find themselves almost out of the race. That leaves Southeastern Oklahoma, East Central and Northeastern State battling for two spots. ECU and NSU have similar schedules left - ECU has UCO and Cameron left on the slate, while NSU has to face MSU and SWO for their final eight games. SOSU has a tougher go at it, with 4-game series against MSU, SWO and UCO remaining. (Magic Number)

Tyler Rushing is hoping to make YouTube.com on a different stage.
Rushing can be seen performing on the popular Web site as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the Tyler Rushing Band. Now, he’d like to be able to post a video of him winning the high jump at the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships.
The Tarleton State senior and former high school standout at Rider and Iowa Park ranks fourth among LSC jumpers with a season-best of 6-6.
“Going 6-9 or 6-10 is my goal,” said Rushing, who graduated from Iowa Park after attending Rider his first three years in high school. “That will get me to nationals.”

Texas A&M-Kingsville defensive back coach Carlos Alvarado had an idea to start a blog about Javelina football and its popularity has taken off since he began chronicling the day-to-day operations of the program starting in February.
Alvarado, in his second year with the program, played collegiate football at New Mexico Highlands. He started the Jav A Blog this spring and generally posts a couple times per day. He features numerous exclusive pictures concerning practices, workouts, community events and many other things to help promote the football program and Texas A&M-Kingsville. ECU offense making strides
ADA — For most of the 2009 football season, the East Central University offense was not only the least productive in the Lone Star Conference but one of the worst in the HISTORY of the conference and, in fact, one of the most anemic in all of Division II.
The Tigers, caught in the vacuum between the spread offense of former coach Kurt Nichols and the more conventional system of returning coach Tim McCarty, couldn’t run the ball and they couldn’t throw the ball. To make things even more difficult, a young defense and one of the nation’s toughest D-II schedules put them in one bad situation after another.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the first 0-11 record in school and conference history: the Tigers grew up, and by season’s end the team — despite finding some gut-wrenching ways to lose in the second half — had shown dramatic improvement on both sides of the ball.
So, as spring camp opened two weeks ago, the ECU coaches began trying to build a positive mindset and a winning attitude in a team they hoped would have a selective memory where the 2009 campaign was concerned.
“You definitely can see the progress we made last season carry over to the first two weeks of spring ball,” said second-year offensive coordinator Rashad Jackson, who joins defensive head man Justin Deason to give ECU the youngest set of coordinators in all of Division II. “The retention of the offense has been really good. The guys have been making a concerted effort NOT to take a step back.”
NSU Coach: Spring Workouts Like "Night And Day" From 2009
Tulsa - Northeastern State head football coach Kenny Evans says his team is young, but is progressing as spring practices continue in Tahlequah.
The third-year head coach says the lineup is filled with freshmen and sophomores, but he's been encouraged by their improvement.
"I'm excited about where we are going," said Evans. "We've got competition at almost every position and those things have helped the tempo change. All those things are making us a better football team, but we are still making a lot of mistakes on the field, because we are a young football team."
Evans says the workouts this spring are like "night and day" compared to a year ago.
"We had to change the culture of this program before you could do anything, before you could even consider winning, because of the previous ten years," he said.
Evans says the biggest change he's seen has been in the attitude of his players, which he said was one of his most important goals.
NSU begins the 2010 season September second at Tarleton State.
DALLAS - Midwestern State's Lance Calloway is one of 10 college football scholar-athletes set to be recognized by the National Football Foundation Gridiron Club of Dallas at the club's second annual banquet.
The banquet will be held next Tuesday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
The 10 honorees will join 53 high school scholar-athletes previously announced.
"We are excited to honor these young men for succeeding at the highest level as both students and athletes," said Gerald Brence, president of the NFF Gridiron Club of Dallas. "They apply their drive to succeed in all aspects of their lives. This recognition is a direct reflection of their hard work and leadership skills."
The 10 scholar-athletes were selected from the entire region at the collegiate level for their combined achievements as students, athletes and leaders in their respective communities. The selection committee included coaches, teachers, administrators and business leaders from the North Texas area.
"Each one of these individuals is recognized for their continuing efforts to better themselves through the game of football. They are leaders in football, academics and in their respective communities," said NFF President & CEO Steven J. Hatchell. "We are proud to honor them and shine a light on their hard work and leadership capabilities."
The event, which begins at 6 p.m., showcases the great stories in North Texas that will inspire future student-athletes to excel in the classroom and become more involved in their communities.
It will also tribute several outstanding individuals for their contributions to the game and the North Texas region.
Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones will accept the Distinguished Texan Award, the gridiron club's most prestigious award, while the NFF also unveils its Legends Award, the Athletics Director of the Year, the Steve Storie Official of the Year and the high school coaches and assistant coaches of the year.
SMU head coach June Jones, who led the Mustangs to their first bowl game in 25 years in only his second year at the helm, will deliver the keynote speech while award-winning sportscaster Scott Murray will serve as the evening's emcee for the second consecutive year.

- Lance Calloway, Center - Midwestern State University: A four-year lettermen with 44 starts as an anchor on Mustang offensive lines that averaged more than 400 yards per game, Calloway was named First Team All-Lone Star Conference and First Team All- Region in 2009, and he earned Honorable Mention All- America accolades from Don Hansen's Football Gazette. A management major with a 3.22 GPA, made the Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Midwestern State Dean's List. His community service includes mentoring kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Wichita Falls and volunteering at the Wichita Falls Art Museum.
- Quincy Daniels, Running Back - University of Mary Hardin-Baylor: Daniels, a two-year captain and the team's star running back, holds a 3.478 GPA and is a member of the Dean's Honor Roll. With a year of athletic eligibility remaining, the First Team American Southwest All-Conference selection ranks fourth on UMHB all- time list with 2,769 career rushing yards, and his 36 rushing touchdowns place him just five away from school and conference records. An active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Daniels' many community service activities include the Helping Hands Ministry, Food for Haiti and the Sole 2 Soul project distributing shoes to Haitian orphans.
- Scott Grantham, Quarterback - Tarleton State University: Grantham quarterbacked the Texans to a 10-3 season and a share of the 2009 Lone Star Conference Championship and a 27-7 record during his entire career. He graduated as a junior with a 3.33 GPA as a business administration major and is currently working toward his MBA. In 2009, he passed for 2,985 yards and threw 19 touchdowns. His career total of 57 touchdowns ranks him first among quarterbacks in Tarleton State history. Grantham is second in passing yardage with 7,860 yards in three seasons with the Texans and is second in completions (550) and third in attempts (997). His many community service projects include the Ronald McDonald House and Meals on Wheels.
- Clint Gresham, Kicker - TCU: The only long snapper invited to the 2010 NFL Combine, Gresham was a three-year starter for the Horned Frogs and one of the unsung keys to TCU's success. His play and contributions were singled out by head coach Gary Patterson on multiple occasions, and he played in the Texas vs. The Nation Challenge college all-star game. A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, Gresham is majoring in entrepreneurial management with a minor in communications.
- Ross Hasten, Running Back - Austin College: A three-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) selection and a three time SCAC All-Academic Team honoree, Hasten led the 'Roos in rushing the past three seasons and has ranked among the top three rushers in the conference the past two seasons. He played in the national NCAA Division III All-Star Game. A history major with a 3.36 GPA, Hasten plans to enter the teaching and coaching profession.
- Kylee Hill, Linebacker - University of North Texas: Hill amassed 46 solo and 77 total tackles in 2008 at safety for the Mean Green. In 2009, he moved to linebacker, racking up 43 tackles (31 solo) before a season-ending injury in the ninth game of the year. A leader in the community, he played an active role as a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council that oversees policies and procedures for North Texas student-athletes; volunteered with Rookie Roundup and National Student Athlete Day on campus; and mentored students at a local Denton elementary school.
- Chase Kennemer, Linebacker - Southern Methodist University (SMU): Overcoming a serious lower- back injury in high school, Kennemer pursued his passion for football in college, becoming the Mustangs' captain in 2009 and amassing a team-best 135 stops with 12 tackles for-loss. A First Team All-Conference USA selection, he also added a sack, two interceptions, three pass break-ups and four fumble recoveries to his 2009 totals. A double major in psychology and finance, Kennemer maintains a 3.5 GPA.
- Joe Pawelek, Linebacker - Baylor University: Pawelek, an NFF National Scholar-Athlete and Campbell Trophy finalist, completed his collegiate career as two- time All-America and two-time Academic All-America. A four-year starter, he set a school record with 46 career starts (48 career games played), and his 422 career tackles place him 18th in NCAA history and second all- time at Baylor behind College and Pro football hall of famer Mike Singletary (662). Pawelek graduated in December 2009 with a degree in finance and economics and a 3.71 GPA. His many community service activities include the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and Food for Families.
- Kyle Pope, Kicker - East Texas Baptist University: Pope, who has maintained a 3.91 GPA, is a three- time member of the American Southwest Conference All- Academic team and four-time member of his school's President's List. He set a school record with 12 field goals and was 21-of-22 on extra points in 2007. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
- Juan Velasco, Kicker - Texas A&M University- Commerce: The kickoff and punt specialist for the Lone Star Conference North Division Champions, Velasco is majoring in sports recreation management with a minor in business. He averaged 39 yards per punt last season on 74 attempts, tallying a total of 2,890 yards. As a junior, he was named First Team All-Lone Star Conference North Division and Don Hansen's Football Gazette Third Team All-Region.
