LSC Baseball Quick Notes
This is the last week of Lone Star Conference play as teams compete for one of six spots in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Abilene, Texas, May 1-2-3-4.
LSC action continued last week with Northeastern State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M all sweeping their four or two-game series, while Abilene Christian and Southeastern Oklahoma each won two of three games in weather shortened series.
LSC Baseball teams are 275-262 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 11-10 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 6-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Diamond Players of the Week
HITTER
Clifton Thomas, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Sr., Centerfield, San Diego, Calif./El Cajon Valley HS
Thomas had a phenomenal doubleheader at East Central last weekend. In the opening game he went 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI’s while becoming the first player in school history to hit for the cycle. Most impressive is that he accomplished the feat in a 7-inning game. He needed a double in his final at bat of the game to record the cycle and came through in the seventh inning. In the second game, he was nearly as good as he went 3-for-6 with two runs, an RBI, a double and two triples. Count it all up and he went 7-for-11 with six extra base hits and six runs in the doubleheader sweep.
Eric McKinney, Northeastern State, Sr., Centerfield, Spiro, Okla./Spiro HS
McKinney helped Northeastern State to a 5-0 week, including a 4-game sweep over Eastern New Mexico, to stay in contention for a Lone Star Conference Tournament berth. The senior outfielder hit .545 for the week (12-of-22) with three doubles, three homeruns, 5 RBI and scored six runs. In the ENMU series, McKinney was 10-of-16 (.625) at the plate where he accounted for all three of his homeruns and a whopping 1.250 slugging percentage.
PITCHER
Red Patterson, Southwestern Oklahoma, Sr., P, Frisco, Texas/Frisco
In a 2-1 win, Patterson struck out a LSC best 15 batters in a nine-inning, complete-game win over Abilene Christian. The victory over ACU was the first every by SWOSU and broke a streak of 18 consecutive losses. Patterson gave up just six hits and walked five batters while throwing 161 pitches in the win. He improved to 4-3 with the victory.
Aaron Lambrix, Abilene Christian, So., Pitcher, North Tustin, Calif.
Lambrix continued his outstanding performance on the mound for ACU this spring picking up a win on Monday over Southwestern Oklahoma. Lambrix’s win gave ACU the series win as he went the distance for second complete game and second shutout of the season. He was effective in the strike zone with only two walks while striking out four and scattering three hits in the win.

Streaking Mustangs up three spots in latest NFCA Top 25
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State moved ahead three spots to No. 4 in the latest National Fast-Pitch Coaches' Association NCAA Division II Top 25 released Wednesday morning. The Mustangs, who have won 22 of their last 24 games, matched the most wins in school history by extended their most recent winning streak to 12 games with a twin bill sweep of Northeastern StateTuesday afternoon in Tahlequah.
Midwestern improved to 44-6 on the season to equal the feat of the 2006 (44-15) and 2007 (44-16) squads.
MSU is one of five teams from the rugged South Central Region to receive mention in the national poll. Emporia State (38-9) dropped four places to No. 8, while West Texas A&M (37-14) moved ahead one spot to No. 17 and Nebraska-Omaha (34-9) emerged at No. 25. Angelo State is receiving votes and falling out of the poll from the No. 22 position last week.
Mustangs maintain control at the top of South Central Region rankings
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State retained its post atop the South Central Region rankingsWednesday afternoon when the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Committee released its latest rankings. The Mustangs (44-6), who have won 12-straight and 24 of their last 26 games, lead a dominant contingent from the Lone Star Conference as the teams laid claim to six spots in the ranking.
West Texas A&M and Angelo State remained at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, while Central Oklahoma and Texas Woman's check in at Nos. 6 and 7. East Central (Okla.) re-entered the rankings at No. 10. Emporia State and Nebraska-Omaha represent the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively, while St. Edward's (Texas) and St. Mary's (Texas), a pair of Heartland Conference programs, occupy the seventh and eighth spots. The top eight teams advance to the 2010 NCAA Division II South Central Regional which will be played in two four-team double elimination tournaments at campus sites during the weekend of May 14-16.
If the season ended today Midwestern State would play host to one of the sub-regionals. The Mustangs would face St. Edward's in the first round and play the winner of the Angelo State and Nebraska-Omaha contest.
Emporia State would host the other side of the regional and face Texas Woman's in the opening round. The victor of that contest would face the winner of the West Texas A&M/Central Oklahoma first-round match up.
The advancing teams meet in a best 2-of-3 super regional at the site of the highest remaining seed for the right to play in the 2010 NCAA Division II Softball Championships to be played May 27-31 in St. Joseph, Mo.

University of the Incarnate Word defensive end Zach Zellars was on the sideline Wednesday night when he saw running back Keith Brown collapse on the field after suffering a concussion with 4:22 left in the first half of the Cardinals’ spring game.
The sight of his best friend lying motionless sent a cold chill through Zellars, who missed the game because of a pulled right hamstring.
“I saw him stumbling as he went back to the huddle, and then he went down,” Zellars said. “I consider Keith my brother. It was tough to see him like that. I wanted to run on the field to help him, but then I thought, ‘What could I do?’”
Brown was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center about 30 minutes after taking a wallop from cornerback Devan Avery on a tackle, but he was released by 11 p.m. Wednesday.
