Baseball: Championship set for this weekend
The top six Lone Star Conference baseball teams will meet in Abilene, Texas, this weekend for the annual LSC Baseball Championship. The tournament features six teams for the fifth straight year. The double-elimination event begins on Saturday and concludes on Tuesday with the championship game set for 1 p.m. All games will take place at Crutcher Scott Field on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
LSC regular season champion ACU is the top seed, while Southeastern Oklahoma is the No. 2 seed. Cameron is seeded third, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville at No. 4, Angelo State at No. 5 and Tarleton State at No. 6.
The championship starts Saturday at 11 a.m. with TAMUK facing CU. ASU will take on SE at 3 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. with Tarleton against host and defending champions ACU.
All the championship games will be aired live via internet video streaming here. The webcasts are available free of charge. Each webcast includes both video and audio, with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet.
ACU earned the LSC regular season title for the 10th time with a 28-11 record.
LSC action continued last week with Southeastern Oklahoma sweeping its four-game series, while Cameron, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M each won three of four games.
LSC Baseball teams are 297-284 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 11-10 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 6-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

HITTER
KC Pfister, Southeastern Oklahoma, Jr., Infielder, Plano, Texas/Plano HS
Pfister posted a monster weekend in a 4-0 sweep of rival East Central. Pfister posted a .857 batting average, going 12-for-14 at the plate, while boasting an .800 on base percentage and a 1.857 slugging percentage. He finished the series with five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI, in addition to scoring 12 runs. He also drew four walks and did not strike out. Pfister posted a streak of 12 at bats in which he reached base safely, and only four times on the weekend did he not reach base, with two of those producing runs on sac flies.
Chris Casazza, Tarleton State, Jr., Outfield/First Base, Temecula, Calif./Chaparral
Casazza tallied a pair of home runs on the weekend, helping the Texans take three of four from the Wildcats at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene and lock in the No. 6 seed into this weekend’s LSC Championships. His two run shot in the second inning of game one helped give the Texans a 4-3 win over ACU. He hit his second homer of the series in the third game of the series, a three-run shot in the first inning to put the Texans up early 3-0. Tarleton closed out the game with a 6-3 win, taking the first series from ACU in Abilene, since 2003.
PITCHER
Jerry A’Hearn, Cameron, Jr., Pitcher, Tuscon, Ariz./Central Arizona
Aggie game one starter Jerry A’Hearn pitched lights out for the playoff-bound Cameron Aggies this week in a complete game, shutout victory over the SWOSU bulldogs. He held opposing batters to a measly .087 hitting percentage while only allowing 4 baserunners all game.
PJ Granado, West Texas A&M, Sr., Pitcher, San Antonio, Texas/South San Antonio HS
Granado had his best performance of the year in game two against Eastern New Mexico as he threw 6.0 shutout innings of relief, giving up just 4 hits in a 11-4 win on Senior Weekend at The Dilla Villa as the Buffs finished the season 23-20 overall with a 17-19 mark in the LSC.

Top TimesVolunteers QB transferring to Tarleton State
Midwestern State football signee Matthew McKenzie died in a single-car accident early Monday morning near San Antonio.
“It’s a real tragedy for the family and right at the height of his senior year,” MSU head coach Bill Maskill said. “It’s unfortunate that something like this could happen. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”
Bexar County sheriff’s officials said McKenzie, 18, lost control of his red Toyota Camry and the car became lodged nose-down between trees and large rocks in a drainage culvert.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, McKenzie was wearing his seat belt, and officials said they don’t suspect alcohol played a role in the accident.
David Malesky, head football coach at O’Connor High School in Helotes, Texas, told the Express-News that McKenzie was a model athlete.
“He was an example of what all of our athletes should be,” Malesky said. “He was a great student; he made really good grades, and not many kids could match his work ethic.”
McKenzie was a unanimous District 28-5A first-team pick at O’Connor High. The 6-2, 225-pound defensive lineman signed a national letter of intent to play at Midwestern State in February.
“He was a great student from a really good family,” Maskill said. “He had great character and would have been a real asset to our football team.”
A memorial fund has been set up for Matthew McKenzie at the Firstmark Credit Union to cover the cost of his funeral.
