LSC Baseball Quick Notes
Three weeks of Lone Star Conference games remain as teams compete for one of six spots in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Abilene, Texas, May 1-2-3-4.
LSC action continued last week with Angelo State sweeping its four-game series, while Abilene Christian, Cameron and Tarleton State all won three of four games.
LSC Baseball teams are 231-216 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 9-8 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 5-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Diamond Players of the Week
HITTER
Travis Latz, Abilene Christian, Sr., Outfield, Tomball, Texas/Tomball HS
Latz helped the sixth-ranked Wildcats to a 5-1 week by hitting .458 (11 for 24) with four home runs and nine RBI. ... Latz was especially dominant in the Wildcats’ LSC series win at Northeastern State, going 9 for 17 with three home runs and eight RBI. ... In Sunday’s doubleheader he was 6 for 8 with two home runs and five RBI and he came within a triple of hitting for the cycle in the series finale. ... Latz is tied for the team lead in home runs with nine and leads the team with 46 RBI. ... He added a solo homer and scored three runs in two wins against Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday.
Alex Lyons, Cameron, Sr., Leftfield, Orem, Utah/University of San Francisco
Cameron clean-up hitter and starting leftfielder Alex Lyons had a huge week for the Black and Gold last week. His .550 batting average and 1.150 slugging percentage were primary reasons the Aggies went 4-1 in their five games last week, including a 3-1 series victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville (who was directly behind CU in the LSC standings at the time). Lyons hit a team-high 11 RBI in the series versus TAMUK, and added another RBI off of a huge triple in Tuesday’s non-conference game against USAO. In game 3 of the CU-TAMUK series, Lyons hit a game-high 7 RBI thanks to two monstrous home runs, one of which was a grand-slam. Lyons also led the team with 11 hits and was second on the team with 4 doubles last week. Lyons is hitting a solid .417 on the year with 46 RBI, 5 homers, 5 triples, 9 doubles, 11 stolen bases, and 44 total hits.
PITCHER
Justin Cotten, Eastern New Mexico, Sr., Pitcher, Dallas, Texas/Eastfield/Trinity Christian HS
Cotten pitched a complete-game shutout at East Central on Saturday, striking out a career-high eight batters, while scattering eight hits. The performance marked the third complete game of his career and was his first shutout.
Cameron Aspaas, Abilene Christian, Sr., RHP, San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS
Aspaas controlled Northeastern State in the opening game of the LSC series between the teams on Saturday. ... Aspaas scattered seven hits over a complete-game seven-inning effort as the Wildcats knocked off the RiverHawks 7-1. ... Aspaas struck out seven RiverHawks and stranded six runners on base. ... He didn’t allow more than one runner on base in an inning other than in the fourth.

Cameron's Jason Timmis and Tarleton State's Carla Cooper were named Lone Star Conference Golfers of the Week for their efforts last week, the league office announced today.
Golfers of the Week
MEN’S
Jason Timmis, Cameron, Jr., Stokes-on-Trent, England/Holden Lane HS
Timmis won this week’s three-round, two-day UCO Kickingbird Classic and led the Aggies to a 2nd place finish overall. The junior’s phenomenal play helped Cameron to lock up a bid to the regional tournament this postseason. Timmis took 1st place in the tournament with the scores 69-66-70 for a total of 205. He finished the event with the field’s best par four scoring average (4.00, E), second-best par three scoring average (3.00, E), third-most total birdies (11), fourth-best par five scoring average (4.44, -5), and the fifth-most pars (34). Timmis has been playing lights out all season long as the Aggies’ top men’s golfer.
WOMEN’S
Carla Cooper, Tarleton State, Jr., 1, Arlington, Texas/Bowie HS
Cooper shot a seven-under par 137 to claim her second straight individual title while guiding the TexAnns to a 31-stroke victory at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz. The junior shot a 66 on day one and a 71 on day two to claim the win. She was 11 strokes better than the second-place finisher, also a TexAnn. Cooper was even on par-three holes this week while shooting three-under on the par-five holes and four-under on par four-holes. She had 10 birdies and 23 pars.
Golf Other Top Performers
Andrew Green, Central Oklahoma, had his second straight top-three finish, coming in third in the UCO/KickingBird Golf Classic. The sophomore standout had rounds of 70-67-71 in finishing with a two-under-par 208 total despite extremely windy conditions on the par-70 KickingBird Golf Course throughout all three rounds.
Colin Cruz , West Texas A&M, led the Buffs to a tie for eighth-place at the UCO/Kickingbird Classic. He tied for 22nd after a 54-hole tournament total of 220 (74, 72, 74). The Buffs finished the contest with an 893 (307, 300, 313).
Mollie Peterson, West Texas A&M, led the Lady Buffs to a sixth-place finish at the Grand Canyon Women’s Invitational. Peterson tied for fifth-place out of 84 competitors. She shot a 79 in the first round of play and cut five strokes off in the second round of play, shooting a two-day total and season’s personal best of 154 (79, 75). Peterson finished the tournament with five birdies. As a team, the Lady Buffs shaved 20 strokes off their round-one total during the second day to shoot a team total of 636 (328, 308).
