LSC Softball Quick Notes
Midwestern State, Central Oklahoma, West Texas A&M and Angelo State have each clinched a berth in the Lone Star Conference Championship to be held in Durant, Okla., May 6-7-8. With one week of LSC divisional play left, teams are vying for the remaining two spots in both the North and South Division this weekend.
The Mustangs clinched their first outright LSC North Division title since 2007 and fourth overall with a 20-2 mark.
League action continued last week with Midwestern State and Angelo State sweeping its conference series, while Southeastern Oklahoma won three of four games in the North Division and Texas Woman’s and Abilene Christian took two of three contests in the South.
LSC softball teams are 376-290 overall, with a 192-149 mark in the South and 184-141 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 95-35 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 38-23 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Players of the Week
NORTH HITTER
Mallory Mooney, Midwestern State, So., Third Baseman, Mesquite, Texas/Horn HS
Mooney returned from her 18-game injury absence and didn’t miss a beat as the sophomore third baseman hit .455 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs to help the Mustangs clinch their first outright LSC North Division title since 2007 with a sweep of Northeastern State. Mooney belted a three-run homer in Game 1 Tuesday in Tahlequah, then blasted a two-run home run in Game 2. The Mesquite native added a pair of sacrifice flies in MSU’s sweep Saturday at Mustangs Park. Mooney raised her season batting average to .359 to go along with seven doubles, seven homers and 35 RBIs.
NORTH PITCHER
Amanda Tanner, Southeastern Oklahoma, Sr., Pitcher, Wagoner, Okla./Wagoner HS
Tanner helped lead Southeastern to a 3-1 week against Southwestern Oklahoma State in a matchup that was key to keeping SE in contention for the LSC Championship. Tanner tossed a pair of complete games, winning both, including pitching SE’s first shutout of the season. She posted a 0.50 ERA, allowing just one run over 14.0 innings. She surrendered just two walks, while striking out seven and holding opponents to a .259 batting average.
SOUTH HITTER
Nicole Smith, Angelo State, Sr., Third Base, Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena HS
Smith hit .625 with five runs scored as the Rambelles swept Texas A&M-Kingsville over the weekend. She was 5-for-8 from the plate with a double and four walks while collecting four stolen bases in the three wins. She picked up at least one hit and scored at least one run in all three games and scored three runs in Sunday’s 7-2 win over the Javelinas.
SOUTH PITCHER
Chelsea Nelson, Angelo State, Sr., Pitcher, Highland Village, Texas/Marcus HS
Nelson picked up a pair of wins an a save as the she led the Rambelles to a three-game weekend sweep at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Nelson earned a win and a save in Saturday’s doubleheader as ASU shut out the Javelinas twice, 4-0 and 3-0. She added a second win in relief Sunday in a 7-2 victory. She boasted an 0.54 earned run average and collected 11 strikeouts in 13.0 innings of work. In Saturday’s first game, she tossed her LSC-leading fifth shutout of the season.

A sunshine-splashed Memorial Stadium provided ideal weather for the end of spring practice for the A&M-Commerce football team. With the team divided into two squads – blue (offense) and white (defense) – the Lions wrapped up their spring practice with a 58-play intra-squad scrimmage.
An aggressive defense forced five turnovers and allowed just one touchdown. A&M-Commerce utilized three quarterbacks - Adam Farkes, Brandon Colquitt and Cal Farley – throughout the scrimmage. The quarterbacks found 10 different receivers during the afternoon, as the offense and the ground game saw carries split among three runners.
One of the ball carriers was Marcus Graham, who scored the lone touchdown on the afternoon. Among those causing havoc on the defensive side of the ball were junior Tramaine Williams and freshman Daniel Jacobs, who were both redshirted during the 2009 season. Williams nearly scored a defensive touchdown early in the scrimmage, picking up a fumble and returning it to the three-yard line. Jacobs was involved in multiple stops throughout the scrimmage.
A&M-Commerce, which won the last five games of the 2009 season on the way to the Lone Star Conference North title, opens the season at home on Sept. 4 against Upper Iowa at 6 p.m. Five of the Lions’ 11 scheduled games will take place in Commerce. The Lions will play in the Harvey Martin Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Sept. 11 against Angelo State.
Greyhounds hit the gridiron for annual spring game
When the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico hit the gridiron on Saturday for their annual Green - Silver Spring showdown, there may have been a few questions about the team that needed answering. With expectations of the NCAA Division II's best passing offense from a year ago looming, some wonder if the Hounds will be able to match 2009's record-setting statistics. If the weekend's intra-squad scrimmage is any indicator, all systems are ready for launch.
After shaking off some pre-game nerves, sophomore quarterback Wesley Wood threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns in his 2010 debut. The young quarterback seems poised to take the reins of an offense that led all of college football in passing yards per game in 2009, averaging 448.
"I feel great about Wes," head coach Mark Ribaudo said. "He's extremely coachable, he's a leader; he's everything you want in a quarterback."
Stephens to play to seasons at Tarleton State
Nick Stephens found a new home.
The former Tennessee quarterback apparently also will get to stay there longer than expected.
Stephens told ESPN.com on Monday that he would be transferring to Division-II school Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas, a 100-mile drive from his home in Flower Mound. And according to the would-be fifth-year senior for the Vols, a review of his transcripts has given Stephens an extra season of eligibility — giving him a chance for two with his new program.
“If anything I’m even more sure of my decision now,” Stephens told ESPN.com. “A lot of things were happening around me. I had an unsettling feeling and I didn’t want to have that feeling.
“There were some things that happened at practice that I don’t really want to get into. But I needed to find somewhere else to play.”
