Football: Spring Game: Maroon rallies to nip Gold, 31-28
Zack Eskridge wasn’t able to match last year’s four-touchdown performance in Midwestern State’s Maroon-Gold Game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Instead, he had to be satisfied with quarterbacking the Maroon to a huge comeback win.
The senior led the Maroon to four of their five scoring drives after spotting the Gold a four-TD lead, and then managed to put together a drive that took the last 5:07 off the clock to win the annual intrasquad scrimmage 31-28.
The game, which closes out the Mustangs’ spring workouts, showed that offense is a definite team strength right now as the team got high-caliber play from its quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends.
But Eskridge, who completed 19-of-29 for 238 yards and two touchdowns, thinks the whole team may have gotten some good out of the comeback win.
“It shows a lot about our team,” he said. “They had a 28-0 lead, but they kept pressing us. We got down on ourselves, but we battled through it. It feels good to come away with a win.
“It brought both sides of the ball together. Now we know we can comeback if we have to. It gave us more confidence in ourselves.”
