LSC Softball Quick Notes
Two weeks of Lone Star Conference division play remain as teams aim for one of eight spots, four from both the North and South Division, in the LSC Championship to be held in Durant, Okla., May 6-7-8.
League action continued last week with Midwestern State and Tarleton State sweeping its weather shortened conference series, while Cameron won three of four games in the North Division and Angelo State and West Texas A&M took two of three contests in the South.
LSC softball teams are 321-246 overall, with a 177-138 mark in the South and 170-129 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 87-33 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 38-23 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Players of the Week
NORTH HITTER
Lauren Craig, Midwestern State, Sr., Catcher, Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS
Craig hit .667 (4-for-6) and drove in five runs including her sixth double and fourth homer of the season while driving in runs in each game of No. 5 Midwestern State’s doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon at Southeastern Oklahoma. The senior catcher from Frisco has driven in runs in each of her last seven games and has collected a hit in 18 of her last 19 while hitting .418 with four doubles, two homers and 20 RBIs since injuries forced her into the cleanup role.
NORTH PITCHER
Brittney Tanner, Midwestern State, Jr., Pitcher, Burkburnett, Texas/Burkburnett HS
Tanner won her fifth-straight decision with a dominant outing in a 6-1 win Tuesday afternoon at Southeastern Oklahoma. The junior from Burkburnett quieted the Storm with one earned run on three hits while fanning seven and walking one to claim a win in her fifth-straight decision. Tanner, who has now won 12 of her last 13 decisions, rates second only teammate Katie Petersen in the LSC with a 1.73 ERA (including pitchers with more than 100 innings) and 150 strikeouts. She ninth in NCAA Division II with 9.8 strikeouts per seven innings.
SOUTH HITTER
Alix Dean, Angelo State, Jr., Second Base, Collinsville, Texas/Collinsville HS
Dean hit .714 from the plate with nine RBI and four runs scored as the No. 22 Rambelles collected three wins over regionally ranked opponents last weekend. Dean started the week 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored in an 8-5, extra-inning win at St. Mary’s. She then went 6-for-10 from the plate with six RBI and a run scored as the Rambelles took the weekend series against Texas Woman’s. Dean hit two home runs on the week and added two doubles and her first career triple as she boasted a 1.429 slugging percentage over the four games.
SOUTH PITCHER
Shelbey Cockrell, West Texas A&M, So., Pitcher, Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS
Cockrell tallied a perfect 2-0 record this past weekend including a no-hitter as the #17 Lady Buffs ran their overall record to 37-14 overall with a 11-4 mark in the LSC. Over her two starts, Cockrell tallied 17 strikeouts with only six walks and three hits for an opponent batting average of .081 in her 12.0 innings of work. Cockrell threw WT’s first no-hitter in over a year on Sunday afternoon in a 12-0 run rule victory over the Zias, striking out eight of the 14 batters she faced.

A fellow named Bill Lubinger of the Cleveland Plain Dealer contacted me recently to find out what I know about Gary Suiter.
The Cavaliers are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and the Cleveland newspaper has been running a series of stories recognizing the 40 greatest players, the 40 greatest games and such.
One listed the 40 most colorful characters — colorful being a polite term for goofy.
Lubinger told me that Suiter — the only Midwestern basketball player to ever play in the NBA — was No. 2 on the list.
I could not believe it.
No. 2?
Bill, I live in Wichita Falls, Texas, — the goofball capital of the world.
And I have never in my life met a goofier person than Gary Suiter.

Ada — ADA — East Central University defensive coordinator Justin Deason has seen the best and worst of times as an assistant coach.
While on the staff at West Texas State, he was part of a team that won its first 12 games and a Lone Star Conference title; in 2010, his first season as a coordinator ended with the Tigers finishing 0-11.
But with the annual Orange and White Game (at 2 p.m. Saturday) less than a week away, Deason believes the worst is over for the ECU football program.
“I know I’m probably the only coach in the conference to be on an undefeated team and an 0-11 team,” Deason said last week. “I definitely know what it takes to have a winning team, and I know where we’re headed.”
The Greyhounds coaching staff didn’t like the sight of the offense scoring at will Saturday morning. So they made the defense watch the same thing.
Saturday marked a win for the offense in the final Eastern New Mexico University football scrimmage before the upcoming Green and Silver spring game, as sophomore-to-be Wes Wood displayed control of the “NASCAR offense” he inherited from the departed J.J. Harp.
Wood, who led Muleshoe to the Class 2A Division I state title two years ago, led the first-team offense to a touchdown on its first offensive play and helped account for a five-touchdown day on offense, against three interceptions.
“It’s really different than it was last year,” Wood said following the scrimmage. “I think we have more of a team chemistry. I’m feeling really confident.”
Wood had two of the interceptions and four of the touchdowns, including a 75-yard bomb to Jesse Poku to open Saturday’s action.
It wasn’t too long after that when Ribaudo and defensive coordinator Todd Wallis snapped, and ordered the defense to the Greyhound Stadium stands. For the next two offensive series, the plays were called dead at the point of the receiver’s catch.
“We came out kind of slow,” senior linebacker Devin Sweet said. “Coach Rib doesn’t like that. We’ve got to come out fired up.”
Football: Football Heads into final Week of Spring Drills
Southeastern football is closing in on the conclusion of Spring Football this week, which will culminate in the annual Spring Game which will be held at 11 a.m. on April 24 at Paul Laird Field.
The Savage Storm will participate in practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday leading into Saturday’s finale.
