CO-MEN’S TRACK
James Howell, Angelo State, Sr., Sprints, Long Beach, Calif./Gahr HS
Howell placed second in the 400-meter dash at the Texas-Arlington Invite Saturday with a time of 47.32. He improved on his previous provisional qualifying mark for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships in May.
Sergio Rios, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Fr., Hurdles, Brownsville, Texas/James Pace HS
Rios ran an outstanding race in the 400 hurdles at the UT-Arlington Bobby Layne Invitational. He finished in third place in a time of 53.85. This is the second time this year that he has bettered the NCAA Division II Provisional qualifying mark. He currently has the second fastest time in the LSC.
CO-MEN’S FIELD
Ramon Sparks, Abilene Christian, Jr., Triple Jump/Long Jump, Kansas City, Mo./Raytown South HS
Sparks won the long jump and the triple jump last Saturday at the Bobby Lane Invitational at Arlington’s Maverick Stadium. ... Sparks -- the reigning outdoor national champion in the triple jump and the winner of the indoor national championship in the event earlier this month -- posted a provisional qualifying mark for this year’s outdoor championship with a jump of 50 feet, 1.75 inches in Arlington. ... He also won the long jump with a mark of 25-4.75, but the wind reading of 6.1 meters per second was well over the allowable wind for the mark to qualify for the national meet.
Casey Keeter, Tarleton State, Jr., Thrower, Olney, Texas/Olney HS
Keeter recorded his second-best throw ever in the shot put in Arlington on Saturday, while winning the event at the UTA/Bobby Invitational with a mark of 16.67. He defeated six NCAA Division I athletes in finals to secure his second gold medal of the 2010 season in the shot put event. Having already provisionally qualified a few weeks earlier, the junior All-American also bettered his previous mark by .37 meters. Keeter placed 10th in the men’s discus event as well, earning the second-best mark out of DII athletes.
WOMEN’S TRACK
Celethia Byrd, Angelo State, Sr., Sprints, Austin, Texas/Reagan HS
Byrd recorded the third-best time in Angelo State history in the 400-meter dash as she placed fourth at the Texas-Arlington Invite Saturday. Byrd’s personal-best time of 54.64 was the fastest time in the event in 10 years at ASU and automatically qualified her for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships in May. Earlier this season, Byrd had recorded an automatic mark in the 200-meter dash and a provisional mark in the 100-meter dash.
WOMEN’S FIELD
Linda Brivule, Abilene Christian, Sr., Javelin, Riga, Latvia
Brivule got her final outdoor season underway last Saturday with a win in the javelin at the Bobby Lane Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas-Arlington. ... Brivule won the javelin with a throw of 160 feet, 10 inches, toping runner Katelyn Penner of Oklahoma, who posted a mark of 158-7. ... Brivule is trying to become the first NCAA Division II female athlete to win three straight national championships in the javelin.

ACU goes 0-4 against ranked team at Blue-Gray tennis
East Central's Andres Nunez and Tarleton State's Adriana Jaskova picked up Lone Star Conference Tennis Players of the Week honors, the league office announced today.

MEN’S
Andres Nunez, East Central, Jr., No. 1 singles/No. 1 doubles, Santiago, Chile
Junior Andres Nunez went 4-1 at No. 1 singles and 5-0 at No. 1 doubles for East Central the past week. His only loss came in three sets against Abilene Christian. All four singles victories came in straight sets over McMurry College (6-2, 6-1), College of the Southwest (6-0, 6-1), Southeastern Oklahoma (6-2, 6-2) and Midwestern State (6-2, 6-4). He combined with Dai Edwardes-Evans to go unbeaten in doubles play.
WOMEN’S
Adriana Jaskova, Tarleton State, Jr., Bratislava, Slovakia
Jaskova helped Tarleton top East Central, 7-2, with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles. The No. 41-ranked junior defeated No. 21 Julia Arguello of ECU after dropping the first set, 6-7, and trailing 3-0 early in the second set. Jaskova overcame the deficit and won 13 of the next 18 sets to win the match (6-7, 7-5, 6-3). She and partner Carole Julen won their doubles match, 8-0.

Jeff Sasser, Cameron, playing at the #3 doubles spot and #6 singles spot, CU’s Jeff Sasser was one of two Aggies on the #20 Cameron men’s tennis team to sweep both of his matches when #19 Oklahoma Christian came to town this week. Teaming with Jorge Gerosi, Sasser won the #3 doubles match 8-4. Sasser then went on to win a very intense three-set match over one of OCU’s better players, 7-5, 3-6, 10-8. Sasser has been counted on for victories all season, but his two this week were arguably his biggest wins.
Amanda Moberg, Cameron, had yet another perfect week for the Black and Gold. The region’s top player swept both of her matches when nationally-ranked #19 Oklahoma Christian came to town, winning at #1 doubles 8-2 and #1 singles 6-3, 6-3. The very next day, Moberg almost led CU to a big Lone Star Conference victory over Central Oklahoma by coming up with two more wins in singles and doubles. Moberg teamed with Julia Puckhaber to win the top doubles match 8-2, and Moberg followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #1 singles.
Marta Valles, East Central, went 5-1 at No. 2 singles and 5-1 at No. 1 doubles for ECU the past week. Four of her five wins came in straight sets while the other was by injury default after she won the first set (6-4) and was leading 3-0 in the second. Valles won three singles sets during the week by 6-0 counts. She teamed with Julia Arguello to win five of six matches at No. 1 doubles.
Hannah Kelley, Abilene Christian, was a perfect 9-0 last week as the seventh-ranked Wildcats rolled to five wins over Northwest Missouri, Hardin-Simmons, Southwest, East Central, Central Oklahoma and Stillman College by a combined score of 36-1... Kelley was 4-0 in singles play and 5-0 in doubles play as the Wildcats improve to 19-3 on the season.

Abilene Christian
The ACU women’s tennis team finished last week with a 5-0 mark, winning the five matches by a combined score of 36-1. ... LSC opponent Central Oklahoma was the only opponent to win a match against the Wildcats on the week. ... With a 19-3 record, the Wildcats need just one more victory to record their 12th straight 20-win campaign. ... In the previous 11 years, the Wildcats’ lowest win total in a season was the 20 wins posted by the 1999 squad. ... The ACU men were 3-2 last week as they improved to 11-7 on the season. ... ACU suffered a disappointing 5-1 loss to Northwest Missouri State, but pulled out a clutch 5-4 conference win over East Central later in the week.
Cameron
This week the nationally-ranked Cameron Aggie men’s (#20) and women’s (#33) tennis teams were both in action... the CU women opened up the week with a tough 5-4 loss to nationally-ranked Oklahoma Christian, and then fell to Central Oklahoma 6-3 in another very close match. The women host a trio of teams at the CU Tennis Complex this weekend with big LSC and NCAA Regional implications. On Friday (April 2) the Aggie ladies host St. Mary’s at 9:00am and Northeastern State at 2:00pm. The next day (April 3) CU hosts the annual Red River Rumble match-up with the Midwestern State Mustangs. CU and MSU hit the court at 9:00am that morning... Cameron’s men’s tennis team lost their only match this week, a 6-3 loss to nationally-ranked Oklahoma Christian at home. CU took victories at #3 doubles, and at #4 & #6 singles. Cameron’s men’s squad hits the court on Friday (April 2) at the CU Tennis Complex for a 6:00pm match-up with St. Mary’s University.
Central Oklahoma
UCO went 3-2 last week, splitting league matches with Abilene Christian and Cameron . . . The Bronchos had a 10-match winning streak stopped last Thursday with a 5-4 loss to Drury and then fell to ACU two days later . . . UCO followed the ACU loss with a win over Hardin-Simmons in Abilene and then returned home to defeat the Aggies 6-3 on Wednesday, overcoming a 2-1 doubles deficit . . . UCO is 12-3 on the year and 2-1 in the league.

The TexAnns picked up a 7-2 Lone Star Conference match win over ECU in Stephenville on Monday. No. 2 and No. 3 doubles were victorious as were No. 1 and No. 3-6 singles. One of the more exciting matches in singles play included Tarleton’s No. 41-ranked Adrianna Jaskova downing ECU’s No. 21-ranked Julia Arguello after being downed 6-7 in the first set and being down 3-0 early in the second set. Jaskova overcame the deficit and won 13 of the next 18 sets to win the match. Tarleton takes another break from LSC play this week and will host St. Mary’s on Saturday, April 3, in a crucial south central region match.
ABILENE – The Wildcat football team finished spring practices Thursday at Shotwell Stadium in an open scrimmage. After an impressive showing from the defense last Saturday during the annual Purple and White scrimmage the Wildcat offense was able to put together a couple scores.
