LSC adds Harding University as affiliate member in Track & Field - LSC Office
Lone Star Conference track teams will have a new competitor at upcoming conference meets as Harding University was announced Thursday as an affiliate member for men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field.

      The decision to invite Harding was reached at last week’s LSC Council of Presidents meeting and calls for the Bisons and Lady Bisons to join the LSC immediately, as the indoor track & field season is underway and outdoor events are set to begin next month.

      The agreement, which will be reviewed annually, stipulates that Harding’s track teams are eligible to compete for LSC individual and team championships, and earn weekly and postseason awards.  They are also entitled to representation as a voting member of the track coaches’ Advisory Group.

      “We’re pleased to welcome coach Steve Guymon and the Harding track teams back to the Lone Star Conference,” LSC commissioner Stan Wagnon said. “This a decision that brings direct benefit to the student-athletes at Harding as they will enjoy competing for championships with the other fine track programs in our league, but it’s mutually beneficial to the LSC as the Harding program is well-respected in Division II track circles. We are excited about the partnership.”

      With the addition of Harding, the league has six men’s and eight women’s teams competing in the inaugural season of indoor track & field.  The LSC Championships meet is set for Feb. 23-24 in Lubbock, Texas.

      In outdoor track & field, the Bisons and Lady Bisons become the league’s ninth men’s and 10th women’s team. This year’s outdoor championship will be held in Canyon, Texas, as part of the LSC Spring Championships Festival.

      Harding, located in Searcy, Ark., and affiliated with the Great American Conference for most sports, has been competing as an independent in track & field under head coach Steve Guymon.  During his seven-year tenure, the men’s team qualified for six indoor and seven outdoor national meets, while the women’s squad reached both the indoor and outdoor championships five times.  Additionally, 58 athletes have earned All-America honors with Guymon at the helm.

      This is Harding’s second stint with the LSC, after holding full membership in the league for three athletic seasons and competing in the 1998, 1999 and 2000 conference track meets. 

Baseball: ASU selected to defend title in 2013 LSC Baseball Preseason Poll

By a nearly unanimous vote, Angelo State was selected to defend its Lone Star Conference baseball title as the preseason poll was announced by league officials on Thursday.

      ASU received all but one of the 21 first-place votes on the ballots cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives for 167 total points.  The Rams are coming off a 2012 campaign in which they went 40-17, won both the LSC championship and tournament title and advanced to NCAA Division II South Central Regional.

      Additionally, ASU’s Lee Neumann was tabbed LSC Preseason Player of the Year.  The senior outfielder from Brenham, Texas, finished the season with a .389 batting average, and led the league in hits (81), triples (9), slugging percentage (.668) and total bases (139) last season to earn co-LSC Player of the Year acclaim.  Neumann also drove in 45 runs, scored 60 runs and stole 17 bases, while starting all 57 games for the Rams.

      Tarleton State’s Pete Perez was named LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.  The senior right-hander from River City, Calif., posted an 8-3 record and league-best 2.06 ERA, .194 opposing batting average, 91.2 innings pitched, seven complete games and five shutouts.  Perez recorded a team-high 83 strikeouts to lead the Texans to a runner-up finish at the LSC Tournament.

      Texas A&M-Kingsville totaled 113 points with one first-place nod to narrowly finish second in the voting, ahead of Tarleton State (112) and Incarnate Word (110).

      West Texas A&M was ranked fifth with 98 points, followed by Abilene Christian sixth (87), Cameron seventh (44) and Eastern New Mexico (25) rounded out the poll.

      The 2013 season starts in early February with LSC teams playing a 7-week, single round-robin schedule with a four-game series against every other team.  Each series shall consist of a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and 9-inning contest Sunday.

      The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into NCAA postseason.  The championship will be played May 3-6, in Canyon, Texas as part of the LSC Spring Championships Festival.

LSC Basketball Championship: Fans have new option

 as tickets sales begin

Lone Star Conference officials will reveal a new team spirit pass option today when advance tickets go on sale for the 2013 LSC Basketball Championship, set to be played March 6-9 at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.

      The pass, featuring modest pricing of $30 for adults and $20 for students, will cater to those fans whose primary interest is simply to follow their favorite team instead of attending all of the tournament’s seven sessions. Available only for purchase at member schools through Feb. 21, team spirit passes entitle the bearer to admission to all games (up to three) played by a men’s or women’s team from the school of choice.

      “The team spirit pass is fan friendly ticketing option – one that we think our fanbase will appreciate,” LSC commissioner Stan Wagnon said. “With all of the restaurants and shopping and entertainment options available to fans literally within walking distance of the Allen Event Center, the team spirit pass is perfect for the fan that wants to support their team but also wants time to do their own thing in Allen.”

      Those wanting access to all seven sessions can purchase all-session tickets at a reduced rate of $45 through Feb. 27 at member schools. After the advance purchase deadline, the adult price moves to $60 for all-session tickets or $15 per session. Student prices will be $32 for all-session tickets or $10 by session.

      Tickets are also available at the Allen Event Center Box Office or through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com). Another option available to fans is to enjoy the view from one of the Allen Event Center’s luxury suites.       This marks the second straight year for the LSC Basketball Championship to be played in Allen, with the tournament again featuring eight men’s and eight women’s teams. The format is set to change slightly this year, with all games being played in doubleheader sessions throughout the event. Every doubleheader session will consist of a women’s game followed by a men’s game, including Saturday night’s final session that features both the men’s and women’s championship games.

ASU picked to repeat in 2013 LSC Softball Preseason Poll

Angelo State was picked to repeat as Lone Star Conference softball champions as the 2013 preseason poll was unveiled by league officials on Wednesday.
      
ASU received 19 first-place votes and 251 overall points in the poll selected by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives.  The Rambelles, who posted a 48-11 overall record in 2012 and made their eighth NCAA Division II regional appearance, won the league title for the sixth time last season.
      
In addition to ASU being tabbed to repeat, the individual honorees were duplicated from last year’s preseason awards.
      
Once again, Texas Woman’s junior Bailey Vrazel was named LSC Preseason Player of the Year.  The shortstop from Danbury, Texas, started all 54 games last season for the Pioneers and led the team in batting average (.414), runs (61), walks (31), on-base percentage (.514) and stolen bases (75).  For the second consecutive year, Vrazel led all collegiate softball players in steals and broke her own TWU and Lone Star Conference single-season record for stolen bases.  She also set a new single-season school records in runs and walks.
      
Incarnate Word’s Briana Sanchez claimed LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors for the second straight year.  The senior from San Antonio, was named to the all-tournament team for her performance during the Cardinals tournament championship run last season.  Sanchez was 17-11 in the circle with a 3.43 earned run average and 196 strikeouts in 202.1 innings last season.
      
TWU was ranked second in the poll with five first-place mentions for 220 points.  West Texas A&M was third with 181 points to edge Abilene Christian, who was fourth with one first-place nod and 176 points. 
      
UIW, the defending tournament champions, picked up the remaining first-place vote to share fifth place with Midwestern State with 151 points each.  Tarleton State (134), Cameron (66), Texas A&M-Kingsville (55) and Eastern New Mexico (45) rounded out the poll.
      
The 2013 season starts February 1 with LSC teams playing a single round-robin schedule with a three-game series against every other team.  Each series shall consist of a doubleheader one day and single 7-inning game the other day.
      
The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into NCAA postseason.  The single-elimination championship will be played May 3-4-5, in Canyon, Texas as part of the LSC Spring Championships Festival.

LSC Presidents endorse changes at winter meeting - LSC Office

A conference playoff in football was arguably the most notable in a series of changes endorsed by the Lone Star Conference Council of Presidents this past Friday at the annual winter meeting for the league’s governing group.
      

President Dan Jones of Texas A&M University-Commerce served as chair for the meeting, which was held in conjunction with the NCAA Convention in Grapevine.
      

The Council’s unanimous approval of a conference playoff is set to begin with the 2014 football schedule.  After playing six conference games over the first nine weeks of an 11-week regular season, the LSC’s seven football teams will split into two brackets to conduct a two-week conference playoff.
      

“College football fans everywhere believe in the playoff system, and this is going to transform the back end of  our schedules and add some real excitement with high stakes,” LSC commissioner Stan Wagnon said. “Not many conferences get the opportunity to conduct their own two-week playoff, and I applaud our presidents for seeing this as a creative solution to the challenge of finding enough non-conference opponents to accommodate our teams.”

LSC Basketball Weekly Release: Rivalry Week on tap - LSC Office
Lone Star Conference teams are set for Rivalry Week, during they will play each other twice in home-and-home contests.  Midwestern State leads the men’s standings, while there is a three-way tie between Abilene Christian, MSU and Tarleton State on the women’s side.

    

On the men’s side, the top four teams - MSU and Cameron along with Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Kingsville - will face each other as part of Rivalry Week.
    

The competition on the women’s side matches teams from the top and bottom of the standings.
    

The LSC champion will be the regular season winner determined by conference games, while the postseason tournament winner is designated as LSC Tournament Champion and earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason tournament set for March 6-9 in Allen, Texas.
    

The LSC men have a 89-68 overall record so far this season.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 14-15 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 3-1 opposed to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
    

The LSC women are 83-87 overall. The women’s squads are currently 15-11 combined versus Heartland teams, and 5-1 against the RMAC, which are the other conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.

MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Bryan Hammond, Angelo State University, JR, Guard, New Orleans, La., St. Augustine HS
Hammond continued his offensive surge last week with a pair of great performances against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Incarnate Word. Hammond scored 17 points in an 81-67 win over the Javelinas on Wednesday before pouring in a career-high 26 points in a loss to Incarnate Word on Saturday in San Antonio. The junior guard is averaging 9.8 points per game for the season and has led the Rams in scoring the past four games. His mentality to attack the basket has translated into getting to the free-throw line where he has shined. He made 13 free throws against the Javelinas and 10 against the Cardinals.

MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jon Cathey-Macklin, Tarleton State University, JR, Forward, Milwaukee, Wis., Washington HS
Cathey-Macklin averaged 6.0 boards a game this week and was a huge part in the Texans allowing opposing teams to less than 55 points a contest and just 39.0 percent shooting from the field. The junior forward dominated opposing team’s post players to a combined 20 points. ENMU’s big men scored just four points in the contest and Cathey-Macklin helped limit WT’s Donald Sims to just 10 points in Tarleton’s 65-50 win over the Buffs.

WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Renata Marquez, Abilene Christian University, JR, Forward, Conroe, Texas, Willis HS
Marquez led ACU to a pair of conference comeback wins this week over Incarnate Word and Kingsville, averaging 19.5 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and eight steals. She also made 61.9 percent of her shots from the floor, including 4-7 from beyond the arc, and was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. In addition to scoring 18 points vs. the Cardinals, Marquez also established a new single-game career high with seven steals. She then dropped 21 points on Kingsville in addition to blocking a career high two shots.

WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Devin Griffin, West Texas A&M University, JR, Forward, Lubbock, Texas, Coronado HS
Griffin continued her impressive start to 2013 as she tallied her fifth double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 70-60 upset win at league-leading Tarleton State Saturday. She was 8 of 19 from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds, including nine on the defensive end, along with four assists, one block and two steals. Griffin helped lead the Lady Buff “D” to hold the TexAnns to just 38.5 percent shooting from the field and .182 from beyond the arc. The TexAnns became the ninth-straight team WT has held under 40 percent from the field. In the 72-51 win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday, Griffin had 22 points and six rebounds and tallied a career-high five blocks against the Lions. She led the team in minutes played averaging 39.5 for the week. Griffin and the Lady Buffs held their opponents to just 55.5 points in the two games and have allowed over 60 points just one time since Dec. 17 - a span of seven games and a 6-1 record since then. In addition, Griffin has helped lead the Lady Buffs to under 31 percent from beyond the arc in the past five games and under 20 percent in the last three for a .288 average for the season.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN’S TRACK
Johnathan Farquharson, Abilene Christian University, FR, Freeport, Bahamas, Orlando Christian Preparatory
Farquharson won the 55-meter dash twice while making his collegiate debut at the Masked Rider Open hosted by Texas Tech. Farquharson posted the fastest prelim time of 6.33 seconds in a field of 70 runners and then edged freshman David Winters of Barton County CC by .003 seconds with a time of 6.30. Farquharson’s provisional mark is currently the sixth fastest among all D-II athletes and places him just outside the school’s all-time top-10 list. Farquharson also ran the leadoff leg for an ACU 4x400 relay that placed sixth in 3:20.12.

MEN’S FIELD
Jordan Yamoah, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, FR, Arlington, NY, Arlington HS
Yamoah made a splash nationally in his first meet as a Javelina in the pole vault. He earned national honorable mention from the USTFCCCA after clearing a height of 5.25m (17’2-3/4”) at the Masked Rider Open. The height is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships and is tops in the nation by a foot and a half.

WOMEN’S TRACK
Elea Diarra, Abilene Christian University, FR, Lyon, France
Diarra, a 2012 London Olympian, chased down several runners over the final 100 meters to win the 400m in 55.73 seconds and later ran anchor for the 4x400-meter relay, which finished fourth overall with a time of 3:49.09. Both of Diarra’s times were NCAA provisional marks and rank among the top-10 performances in D-II this season.

WOMEN’S FIELD
Amanda Ouedraogo, Abilene Christian University, SR, Hauts de Seine, France, Descartes HS
Ouedraogo, a four-time all-American, will be heading back to the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships this winter to defend her triple jump title after winning her marquee event Saturday at Texas Tech’s Masked Rider Open. Ouedraogo, a senior and native of Hauts de Seine, France recorded a distance of 41 feet-0.25 inches (12.50 meters) against a field of 22 competitors. Her triple jump is the second best in NCAA D-II this season to Kearah Danville’s leap of 41-11.25 (12.78m).

COMMERCE, Texas – Texas A&M University-Commerce Athletic DirectorRyan Ivey today announced the hiring of Colby Carthel as the 19th head football coach in Lion program history.

"We are excited to welcome Colby and his wife, Sarah, to A&M-Commerce," Ivey said. "His pedigree for coaching is well documented, along with his passion and energy to be successful. Obviously, he has been part of some very successful programs and he knows what it takes to win. His work ethic is relentless and I am excited to have him on board and look forward to watching him turn our football program around."

Carthel comes to Commerce with strong ties to the Lone Star Conference, spending the last seven seasons as the defensive coordinator at West Texas A&M and playing a key role in establishing the Buffs as one of the top teams in the region. During his seven years at West Texas A&M, the Buffs have captured four Lone Star Conference championships while making an appearance in the postseason each year, including a pair of Kanza Bowl championships and a regional championship in 2012.

During Carthel's tenure as the Buff's defensive coordinator, West Texas A&M has compiled a 69-20 record with a 77.5 winning percentage. That win total and winning percentage ranks second among all collegiate football programs in the state of Texas, trailing only Texas Christian University.

Texas A&M Commerce: Sources told us last night that West Texas A&M defensive coordinator Colby Carthel will be named head coach at Texas A&M Commerce. 

A&M-COMMERCE TO ANNOUNCE NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH TUESDAY

COMMERCE, Texas -- Texas A&M University-Commerce will hold a press conference on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 as A&M-Commerce Athletic Director Ryan Ivey will announce and introduce the Lions' new head football coach. The press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. in the Traditions Room, located on the second floor of the Rayburn Student Center on the A&M-Commerce campus.

The announcement will also be streamed live at LionAthletics.com.

Recruiting Profile - Travaras Battle

Next up is Travaras "Trey" Battle.  Trey played at John Jay High School in San Antonio, where he was all-state and played on both sides of the ball.  He was rated as a 3 star recruit by Rivals (#79 athlete nationally), a 2 star Scout prospect and the #51 athlete by ESPN.  He signed with TCU and played in 13 games as a true freshman and was 13th on the team with 18 tackles.  As a sophomore, he appeared in 9 games and had 21 tackles, with 2 passes broken up.

Q - Travaras you signed with TCU out of high school. How was your time in Fort Worth?

It was a blessing, something I always dreamed of growing up in a small town in Georgia. My uncle playing for UGA and I looked up to him as a father, so being at the same level that he got to was a great feeling.

Q - What were some of your highlights while you were there?

Winning the rose bowl game and being able to play as a freshman on one of the top teams in the country.

Q - Now your at Texas A&M-Kingsville and will be joining the football team in the spring. How did you end up a Javelina?

My mother had got very sick my soph year and I choose to leave and come home for a while.  My high school coach, Bobby Jack Goforth, just called me one day and asked if I wanted to play again and the answer was yes! He said a school in Kingsville  wanted to know if I wanted to play and I was so happy that God was giving my family and I another chance to live a dream that we all talked about growing up in Forsthy, Georgia.

Q - What are your expectations of playing in the Lone Star Conference? 

I believe football is football no matter where you play it at. If you are having fun running around and loving what you are doing then your performance is going to show itself

Q - What are you looking to do after college? outside of the NFL, what kind of career are you interested in? 

I am a communications major with a minor in business. I want to be able to start my own business or come in to the family business with my uncle Hayes Battle

Q - Coming from San Antonio and Fort Worth as it been difficult adjusting to a smaller town, or did growing up in a small town in Georgia make this an easier transition?

I grew up in a town smaller than Kingsville, so I feel like I'm at home again - I feel like I fit right in.

Recruiting Profile - Dominque Drew

Recruiting season is in full swing with national signing day less than three weeks away.  Our first recruit profile is Dominique Drew.  Dominique played at San Antonio Roosevelt and appeared to be headed to the CUSA, but an injury during his senior year changed his plans, as he ended up playing at Blinn College.  And while it's been a couple of years since he last played, Dominique feels ready and capable of helping a team willing to give him a chance.

Dominique, can you tell us a little bit about your recruiting process coming out of high school? What schools were interested and where did you want to go?

Recruiting process in high school was nice because any school that came in there came to talk to me...I took a few unofficial visits and took all of my official visits...I was offered by all of Conference USA , and was waiting for my season to end to see else would come recruit, but I suffered a very bad pancreatic injury which left me hospitalized for 6 months with no eating or drinking....but Brad Francione found me and I ended up at Blinn.

In what areas have you improved/grown the most while at Blinn?

I improved the most by far on my technique and patience.  I came in straight out of the hospital, so my speed wasn't back yet and the only way I could keep up was with patience and technique, which made me that much better when I got my times back down (4.47 -4.49 ). I will never lose my technique

What has been your favorite moment/play/game?

My favorite play in high school..I was an offensive and defensive player, 4th dwn I go to block the punt with under 2:30 left in the game I rough the punter and give 4 more downs ...But we stop them again , and get the ball with under a minute.  We drive down to the 15 yard line with 50 seconds, call time out, and coach tells the qb as long as you throw it in the area Drew will get it...We go out he throws it to the corner with a cb under me an safety over the top. I grab it for the score...and that was my first ever catch in a high school varsity game..

I think every CB admires Deion Sanders , but I think my game is more like a Charles Tillman of the Chiago Bears..Over 6" ft very consistent an technical..

What will you bring "to the table" when you strap it on at your next school?

Discipline, consistency, and the never give up attitude...Football is a lifestyle - a way of life, and just like everything else in your life, it can be taken away in a flash..so I prepare and play every game like it's my last and that always helps me succeed.
