The 2013 inductees to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor include two former
football standouts and a previous sports information director, league officials
announced on Tuesday.
James Dearth of Tarleton State, Garner
Roberts of Abilene Christian, and Clayton Weishuhn of Angelo State make up the
2013 class of inductees for the LSC Hall of Honor, which recognizes outstanding
individuals who have brought pride and honor to the conference through their
contributions as an athlete or who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to
the betterment of the conference as a coach or administrator.
The
inductees were chosen by a panel of athletic administrators throughout the
league.
"This year's class is very deserving and seems to represent
the contrasting ways people have been associated with our league over the years.
You have a guy like James, who accomplished a whole lot in a very brief period
of time, and then a guy like Garner, who really has made lifelong contributions
to the conference. And, of course, Clayton's experience of achieving individual
success while also helping his team to accomplish national prominence is to be
celebrated. These three truly speak to the tradition of our conference and are
joining their rightful place among other Lone Star Conference greats," said LSC
Commissioner Stan Wagnon.
Each of the inductees will receive the
LSC's signature Hall of Honor award, a 15-inch custom-sculpted eagle figurine
mounted on a cherry wood base. The awards for Dearth, Roberts and Weishuhn are
to be presented this fall.
Here is a closer look at each of the
2013 inductees to the LSC Hall of Honor:
James Dearth,
Tarleton State, Football: Dearth, who is TSU's first
LSC Hall of Honor inductee, was a two-time second team All-American in football
and an All-American in the shot put. Drafted in 1996 in the sixth round by the
Cleveland Browns, he is a 12-year veteran of the NFL as a deep
snapper.
Dearth played for the Texans from 1996-98, tallying 77
catches for 992 yards and nine TDs in three seasons. He actually started at
quarterback in TSU's opening game in 1996 before moving to tight end, where he
twice was named first team All-LSC South Division and second team NCAA Division
II All-America.
The Scurry, Texas, native was named the 1998 LSC
South Offensive Lineman of the Year as he finished his senior season with 19
catches for 333 yards in the final four games. He also earned All-America honors
in the shot put in 1998 while competing for Tarleton's track and field team.
Dearth was inducted into the TSU Hall of Fame in 2012.
Garner Roberts, Abilene Christian, Sports Information
Director: Roberts served ACU as its Sports Information Director for 25
years from 1973-98, watching the Wildcats win 41 national championships and 89
Lone Star Conference titles, and then worked at the university in various
marketing roles until 2004. He also served as the LSC media relations director
from 1984-95, while still performing his duties at ACU.
Roberts was
inducted into the ACU Sports Hall of Fame in October 1999 as the 11th recipient
of the Lifetime Achievement Award. A 1970 ACU graduate, he has worked at
athletics events all over the globe, including track and field opening and
closing ceremonies at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In 1987, Roberts
received CoSIDA's Warren Berg Award and is a member of the CoSIDA Hall of
Fame.
Clayton Weishuhn, Angelo State,
Football: Weishuhn was a three-time first team All-LSC selection
during his career from 1978-81 and one of the top defensive players to wear an
ASU uniform. He played during the most successful era in Ram football as ASU
posted a 39-8-1 record during his four years with the program.
Weishuhn was a part of Ram teams that made three-straight postseason
appearances, the only such streak in school history. As a freshman, he was a
member of the ASU football team that won the 1978 NAIA national championship,
going 14-0, the program's only undefeated season. Weishuhn ended his playing
career as the Rams' all-time leading tackler with 523 stops, a record that he
still holds to this day.
After earning second team All-American
honors as a junior, he was a consensus first team All-American pick after his
senior season in 1981 after setting the school record with 173 tackles.
Weishuhn earned first team All-LSC acclaim after each of his three final
seasons (1979-81) and was a two-time selection for the J.V. Sikes Award
(1980-81) given to the outstanding lineman in the LSC. He is one of nine former
ASU players to go on to a playing career in the NFL as he was drafted by the New
England Patriots in the third round of the 1982 draft.
