Flemming sidelined for game Saturday
West Texas A&M running back Keithon Flemming attended the first media luncheon for WT fall sports at the Big Texan Steak Ranch on Monday with his left arm wrapped in a large brace, the result of dislocating his elbow in the Buffs final preseason scrimmage Saturday at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

At least for the near future, Buff fans will have to get used to this image. Flemming will miss WT's first game of the season Saturday - a marquee matchup between the No. 11 Buffs and Grand Valley State, the No. 1 team in the nation - at 6 p.m. at Kimbrough. Flemming, a 6-0, 210-pound senior from Mesquite, injured his elbow on a 6-yard run on the Buffs' fourth offensive series.

Flemming had an MRI Monday morning, and the Buffs expect to know more about his status soon, possibly by Wednesday. WT head coach Don Carthel said that recovery time for this type of injury is typically four to six weeks.

"That's for a normal person. Keithon could be back quicker," Carthel said. "With Keithon, as tough as he is, he wants it to be four to six hours."

College football notes: UIW backup QB to play in opener
Don’t be alarmed when Incarnate Word backup quarterback Paden Lynch trots onto the field at some point in the second quarter of Saturday’s first game against Monterrey Tech.

No, the D’Hanis graduate’s appearance won’t signal the end of the Thomas Specia era. Giving the backup a series to play each game is just a change-of-pace strategy coach Mike Santiago likes to employ.

“It’s no secret if you have studied me, my backup quarterback typically plays a series in the second quarter,” Santiago said. “It’s predetermined. So Paden will go in somewhere in the second quarter every week.”

Santiago also said QB Eric Massoni might play as a reward for being part of the first signing class.

Jay standout at A&M-Kingsville: Former Jay standout Derrick Thomas is expected to start at right cornerback for Texas A&M-Kingsville in the season opener against Delta State, Miss., on Saturday night.

Backing up Thomas will be Marc Kinney, formerly of MacArthur. Judson-ex Mitchell Swan is running second team at one of the wide receiver positions.

Shrum struggles at US Amateur

TULSA (Aug. 24) -- Central Oklahoma's Colby Shrum got off to a rough start and never recovered on the first day of the United States Amateur here Monday. The senior standout triple bogeyed the par-4 third hole en route to a front-nine 42 and had another triple bogey on the par-3 11th in shooting an identical back-nine 42 for an 84 at historic Southern Hills Country Club in the first round of qualifying.

Shrum returns at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Ridge Country Club for the final round as the field of 312 is trimmed to 64 match-play qualifiers. The match play portion of the tournament begins Wednesday at Southern Hills and wraps up with Sunday's 36-hole finale.

Shrum had seven pars and one birdie against two triple bogeys, a double bogey and seven bogeys on the rugged course that took its toll on the best amateur players in the nation.

A two-time All-American, Shum has enjoyed a fantastic summer season. He won the Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship and made the quarterfinals of the OGA Match Play Championship in addition to winning the Oklahoma qualifier for the U.S. Amateur.
