WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Charlie Carr was named athletics director at Midwestern State Monday concluding an extensive national search.

“We are very pleased that we were able to attract a candidate of Mr. Carr’s experience to MSU,” MSU President Dr. Jesse Rogers said. “He has excellent ideas and is real understanding of Division II and the importance of intercollegiate athletics to our university’s alumni, faculty and students.”

Carr brings 30 years of experience to Midwestern State having served the last 12 as the senior associate athletics director at Florida State University.

“After looking twice, it’s really apparent we have an opportunity to be the model D-2 community,” Carr said. “We have the support of a great president, outstanding coaches already in place and the opportunity to make solid community connections in Wichita Falls.”

Carr, who is the fifth athletics director since Steve Holland retired after 13-year tenure in 1997, takes over for Ed Harris, who announced his retirement in August.

Harris came out of retirement to take over duties at Midwestern State last September after spending 11 years in the same capacity at West Texas A&M in Canyon.

“I’ve enjoyed talking to Charlie about the potential of athletics at Midwestern State,” Rogers said. “I look forward to working with him and continuing the processes Ed Harris started.”

Carr’s administrative career began at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1978 where he had served as an assistant football coach since 1971.

He was promoted to senior associate athletics director in 1982 before moving on to Mississippi State University as the director of athletics from 1985-87.

Carr then served as the executive director for the educational foundation at East Carolina University from 1988 to 1991 before moving back into athletics administration as the senior associate director at ECU from 1991-95.

He was on the National Collegiate Athletics Association baseball committee from 2001-05, serving as chair for the final three years.

Carr earned his bachelors and masters degrees from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1968 and1970, respectively.

He has a 22-year-old daughter, Caitlin, who is currently a student at Florida State.

Carr officially assumes duties at Midwestern State next week.
