Another tough game ahead for Mustangs
For the second time in three days, Midwestern State coach Grant McCasland will try to come up with a way to stop a Lone Star Conference team’s 1-2 punch.

The Mustangs didn’t have much luck trying to defend Dominique Gaines and Jason Jones on Monday night. The Northeastern State pair combined for 52 points, but the Mustangs still escaped with a 78-76 win — their 21st straight victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Tonight, No. 10 MSU will be focused on Antwan Mullins and Flavio Milam when it tips off against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8 p.m. under the Dome. Mullins, a 5-9 junior point guard, leads Kingsville with a 13.1 scoring average. Milam, a 6-5 senior forward, averages 12.8 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds.

Either Mullins or Milam have been the Javelinas’ top scorer in 13 games this year. In a 97-91 overtime win at home over Angelo State last Saturday, Milam scored 29 and Mullins scored 22.

“We played against Flavio when I was coaching Midland (junior college), and he is a guy who can go make plays,” McCasland said. “He is a big wing who is versatile and does a lot of things well.

“Mullins is an aggressive guard who reminds me a little of our Jason Ebie. He is fast and tough. These two guys are significant for Kingsville. The more aggressive they are, the better the team plays.”

West Texas A&M men's basketball coach Rick Cooper will have no problem getting the attention of his players on just how good the Angelo State Rams will be tonight.

MSU women look to get back on winning track
After losing three straight conference games, the Midwestern State women are going back to basics.

And the biggest part of the movement will be stressing defense.

The Mustangs will need all of the defensive effort they can muster tonight as the high-scoring Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas invade D.L. Ligon Coliseum for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

MSU is 6-10 for the season and 0-3 in the Lone Star Conference South, while the Javs (14-4, 2-1) have rebounded to win two straight since falling to West Texas A&M in the LSC South opener.
“We’re going back to the drawing board and coach (Monticee Williams) came up with some defensive drills,” MSU head coach Noel Johnson said. “Whoever plays the hardest and wants to win will play. If you just play every other possession, you don’t deserve to play. We have to have some people step up and take their game to another level.”

Lady Buffs need win to stay atop division
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs will attempt to remain atop the Lone Star Conference South Division standings when they face Angelo State's Rambelles at 6 p.m. today at the Junell Center in San Angelo.

Smoaky.com is reporting that Luke Wagner (QB Tyler Lee) has committed to Texas A&M-Commerce, Garrett Hughes (WR/DB Daingerfield), Stacy Whitaker (DB Jacksonville HS) and Koko Smith (RB Daingerfield) are both headed to Tarleton State, and Keiston Clayton (CB Sulphur Springs) has committed to Southeastern Oklahoma. In addition, it is reported that Southeastern Oklahoma has offered Dylan Cathey (OL Paris) and Thomas Lacy (OL Tyler Lee).

Joe Sanders (QB/Ath Rockdale) has committed to Midwestern State.

Zach Rice (OL Princeton HS) is also heading to Texas A&M-Commerce.

Northeastern State picks up a commitment. Justin Butterfield, a two way lineman from Bartlesville has committed to the Riverhawks, choosing NSU over East Central, Missouri Southern and Emporia State.

SWO HALL OF FAME TO INDUCT FOUR ON FEB. 6

WEATHERFORD – A day of celebrating some of the greatest players from Southwestern Oklahoma State University rich and storied history will take place Saturday, Feb. 6 when four new members will be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2010 inductees include: Leonard “Tex” Selvidge, a football star for the Bulldogs in the mid 1950’s; Bennie Beutler, longtime stock producer for the SWOSU rodeo, Todd Helton, a NAIA football All-American in 1989, George Hauser, legendary men’s basketball coach of 27 years for the Bulldogs.

The new class will be honored for their achievements on and off the playing fields at a luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Memorial Student Center Ballroom. The festivities will be held in conjunction with the Bulldog’s basketball game against Cameron later that day.

Tickets for the luncheon are $20 and available now by calling the SWOSU Athletic Department at 580-774-3068.

The SWOSU Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1962 and honors those individuals who, by outstanding achievement in athletics or service to the college’s sports teams, have made lasting contributions to the cause of sports at the school.
