UCO's Birmingham Named Harlon Hill Candidate - UCO Sports Information
FLORENCE, Ala. (Nov. 12) – Central Oklahoma’s Josh Birmingham has been named one of 24 candidates for the 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy that goes to the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year, it was announced Friday by the National Harlon Hill Committee.
The redshirt freshman running back from Luther is one of six players on the Super Region Four ballot, joining quarterbacks Blake Bolles of Northwest Missouri, Eric Czerniewski of Central Missouri, Steve Gachette of Southwest Baptist, Mitchell Gale of Abilene Christian and Taylor Harris of West Texas A&M.
The list includes six players from each of Division II’s four super regionals, with players nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 148 Division II football-playing institutions. The 24 candidates will be placed on regional ballots and the top two players from each of the four regions will advance to the national ballot when voting concludes on Nov. 19.
The winner of the 2010 award will be announced at the 25th Annual Harlon Hill Trophy Presentation Banquet on Dec. 17 in Florence on the eve of the Division II national championship game.
Birmingham is UCO’s eighth Harlon Hill Trophy candidate and the first since quarterback Justin Allgood in 2004. Running back Joe Aska has the highest Harlon Hill finish for the Bronchos, coming in third in 1994.
Birmingham has put together a sensational season as UCO enters Saturday’s season finale at Angelo State, currently leading Division II in scoring with 12.60 points a game while ranking 16th nationally in rushing with 115.8 yards a game and 17th in all-purpose yards with 153.2 a contest.
The rookie standout has scored two-plus touchdowns in nine straight games and has 21 TDs on the season (18 rushing, three receiving) for 126 points, which ranks third on UCO’s single-season scoring list. He needs one TD to tie the school record for touchdowns (22) and points (132), both set by James Hooks in 1971.
Birmingham has had 25 runs of 10-plus yards and has already set a school career record for TD runs of 50-plus yards with four, having scoring on runs of 58, 60, 66 and 81 yards this season. He’s rushed for 1,158 yards in 223 carries and has added 363 yards receiving on 43 catches.

No one dares scale a rooftop to holler “It’s about time,” because the possibility of breaking one’s neck to drive home a point isn’t the wisest course of action.
That said, the fact that Texas A&M-Kingsville’s offense finally appears to be rounding into form is cause for cautious optimism at the very least.
And it is a bigger deal to those directly involved.
“It’s monumental, monumental,” Javelinas defensive end Roderick Benman said, throwing his head backward, “because the playoffs are coming up. We have the No. 1 rush defense. With us having a good defense, with our offense backing us up and doing the things that they did and carrying it into the playoffs, it’s monumental for them to keep on moving and keep on driving.”

Angelo State 3, Central Oklahoma 0
The No. 3 seed Angelo State defeated the No. 6 seed Central Oklahoma 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 26-24) in the opening game of the Lone Star Conference Championship held at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" on the campus of West Texas A&M University on Thursday afternoon.
The win lifts the Rambelles to 18-11 overall, while the Bronchos finish the season with a 20-11 overall record.
The Rambelles were led by Chelsea Gibson with 13 kills and Alex Woolsey who registered a team high 38 assists. Central Oklahoma was led by Zuela Adom with 13 kills and Fleming Smurthwaite with 24 assists.
Angelo State advances to the semifinals on Friday evening at 5 p.m. against the winner of the Abilene Christian/Texas Woman's matchup.
No. 22 Abilene Christian 3, Texas Woman’s 0
The No. 2 seed and No. 22 nationally ranked Abilene Christian defeated the No. 7 seed Texas Woman's 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22) in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship held on the campus of West Texas A&M at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box".
The win improves the Wildcats to 26-4 overall, while TWU finishes their season with an 11-18 mark.
ACU was led by Kalynne Allen with nine kills and Ijeoma Moronu with 29 assists. The Wildcats combined for 11 team blocks in the game. The Pioneers were led by Katelyn Osborne with nine kills and Sydney Veitenheimer with 27 assists.
With the win, the Wildcats advance to the semifinals against Angelo State at 5 p.m. on Friday evening. The Rambelles swept Central Oklahoma in the first match of the day.
Tarleton State 3, Midwestern State 2
The No. 5 seed Tarleton State defeated the No. 4 seed Midwestern State 3-2 (25-10, 21-25, 21-25, 25-16, 16-14) in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship being held at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" on the campus of West Texas A&M.
The TexAnns improve their overall record to 23-9, which set a new school record for wins in a season. The Mustangs finish the season at 15-14 overall.
Tarleton was led by Rachel Wolf with 21 kills and Jessie Hartman with 32 assists. The TexAnns also compiled 16 total blocks compared to the Mustang's 12. MSU was led by Sheli Stewart with nine kills and Kimberly Jeffrey with 27 assists.
The TexAnns advance to the semifinals tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the West Texas A&M and Incarnate Word match.
West Texas A&M 3, Incarnate Word 0
Top seed West Texas A&M defeated No. 8 seed Incarnate Word 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-17) in the final quarterfinal match of the Lone Star Conference Championship held on the campus of West Texas A&M at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box".
The win improves the Lady Buffs to 25-8 overall making it the sixth consecutive season with at least 25 wins. The Cardinals end their season with a 9-15 mark.
The Lady Buffs were led by Erika Dupree with 12 kills and 22 digs and teammate Lauren Thedford registered 13 digs. Incarnate Word was led by Stephanie Bonura with 12 kills and Danielle Suarez with 18 assists.
WT advances to the semifinals Friday against the No. 5 seed Tarleton State with a 7:30 p.m. start time. The TexAnns defeated Midwestern State earlier in the day in five sets to advance.

MSU Men's Soccer: No. 2 Mustangs roll past Truman, No. 3 Colorado Mines next - MSU Sports Information
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 2 Midwestern State used a quick start to jump on No. 8 Truman Thursday in the NCAA Division II South Central Region championship at the MSU Soccer Field and hung on for the 3-2 victory.
The Bulldogs saved a ball off of the line in the opening minute after David Freeland tracked a long serve from MSU goalkeeper Michael Wood for a shot at the open net, but David Friesen raced in to knock the ball out of the goal mouth.
The teams exchanged opportunities over the next 12 minutes before Truman was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Junior defender Dean Lovegrove converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the season to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute.
The Mustangs pushed the lead to 2-0 when Sam Broadbent's header into the box found senior midfielder Bryce Taylor, who redirected with a header of his own for his sixth tally of the season.
Truman would battle back in the second half.
Matt Kimball tracked down a loose ball in the Bulldogs' offensive third and beat Wood to the lower left corner for his third goal of the season to pull Truman within a goal.
But the Mustangs pushed the lead to 3-1 in the 61st minute as Tex McCullough headed in Lovegrove's serve off of a corner kick in the 61st minute.
The Bulldogs pulled back within a goal on a Dan Meagher goal in the 88th minute, but the Mustangs hung on for the win.
Midwestern improved to 17-0-2 on the season by extending its home field unbeaten streak to 31 matches. The Mustangs are no 11-0 at the MSU Soccer Field this season.
MSU plays host to No. 2 Colorado Mines in the second round of the NCAA Division II Championship Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
Colorado Mines rallied from an early deficit to bury Regis (Colo.) 5-1 early Friday afternoon in Golden.
Truman ends the season at 12-3-2.

Javs basketball hoping to come together quickly - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
Patience is a virtue the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball coach Pete Peterson isn’t embracing very warmly.
Starting his 14th season as the Javelinas coach, Peterson wants his Javelinas to round into form sooner than later. With as many as perhaps five new starters that won’t be an easy undertaking, especially with Division I Bradley looming in Friday’s season opener.
“But I’m just not backing down. We’ve just got to get off to a great start. We’re going to find out a lot more Friday,” Peterson said. “I just know we’ll be champing at the bit to get that first home game. I think we’ll really be ready. I think this game is really going to help us. We’ll find out how tough we are.”
WT men face Emporia State in basketball opener - Amarillo Globe News
The West Texas A&M men's basketball team opens its season at 1 p.m. today against Emporia State in the South Central Shootout at Bruin Field House in Bartlesville, Okla.
WT head coach Rick Cooper, in his 18th season with the Buffs, has two returning starters in Joe Mincey and Jacquiese Holcombe from last season's 16-13 team.
The Buffs conclude the two-day shootout against Newman at 1 p.m. Saturday.

High schools: Coronado's Johns to sign with A&M-Kingsville; Mustang Morris to sign with ACU - Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Coronado senior Stephanie Johns will sign a letter of intent to play volleyball for Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m. Monday in the Coronado library.
Johns, a 6-foot middle blocker, helped lead the Lady Mustangs to the Region I-5A quarterfinals this year. She racked up 374 kills with a .309 hitting percentage and also had 140 blocks, 111 digs and 43 service aces.
Coronado senior Michael Morris will sign a letter of intent to play tennis for Abilene Christian University at 2 p.m. Monday in the Coronado library.
Morris, the individual District 2-5A champion as a junior last year, has played in the Mustangs’ No. 1 singles and doubles spots in each of the last two team seasons. This fall, when he helped lead Coronado to its 13th consecutive district title, he lost only four doubles matches and didn’t lose a singles match until the regional final.

UCO adds basketball genes
Central Oklahoma picked up some good basketball genes when the early signing period began Wednesday. Jared Jobe of Edmond Memorial signed with a men’s program that often struggled in games during the early 1980s against nearby Oklahoma Christian College.
OCC — now known as Oklahoma Christian University — had an All-American guard named Kelly Jobe and a legendary coach in Jerry Jobe.
Jared Jobe is the son of Kelly and the grandson of Jerry. Oklahoma Christian had some of the finest men’s teams in small college basketball. Jerry Jobe coached the Eagles to a 211-56 record over eight seasons.
Jared Jobe averaged 11.6 points and 3.4 assists last season while helping Edmond Memorial reach the Class 6A state tournament.
“We’re thrilled to have Jared join our program,” UCO coach Terry Evans said. “Jared is a very smart player, a great shooter and an even better young man.”
