The Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville men finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while the ACU women ended up eighth at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo.

The Wildcats were fifth with 50 points after winning with 68 points last year, while the Javelinas finished in sixth place overall with 44 points, the second best finish in school history behind the 1993 squad that took fourth place.  The ACU women were eighth with 25 points with 17 in running events and eight in field events.

Three Lone Star Conference athletes earned individual national titles as ACU’s Nick Jones and Levance Williams won the discus and long jump, and TAMUK’s C.J. Griggs claimed the triple jump.  Jones prevailed for his fourth Division II title with a throw of 196-1, to become only the third man in Division II outdoor track and field history to win his event four times and the first in the discus.  Williams started the long jump with a leap of 25-11 – the best long jump by a Division II athlete this season – to win the event. It marked only the fourth time for an athlete from ACU to win the men's long jump at this meet and the first time since 1999.

Griggs had a dramatic winning performance in the triple jump. After the preliminary heats, he stood in fourth place with a personal best jump of 50-7.25, but his right ankle was bothering him and even forced him to pass on his second jump. In the finals he made a dramatic switch to take the first jump off his left foot and the results were unbelievable. After a subpar fourth jump, he popped the winning jump on his fifth attempt out to 51-9.25.

Adams State, Colo., won its first NCAA Division II outdoor title with 77 points to 73 for runner-up Lincoln, Mo.  St. Augustine's, N.C., and Western State, Colo., tied for third with 54 points.
Grand Valley State, Mich., repeated as champion of the women's division with 90 points after turning back a challenge from Lincoln (79) and Adams State (59).

Southland Conference to make summer visit to ACU campus - ACU Sports

ABILENE – After more than two years of a thorough evaluation of its athletic program and the impact of conference alignment across the intercollegiate landscape, ACU administrators were informed that the Southland Conference will be on campus this summer for an official site visit.

Southland Conference presidents met Wednesday and voted to make campus visits to ACU, Incarnate Word in San Antonio and the University of New Orleans as they seek to replace three schools which recently left the league.  The SLC has already added Oral Roberts and Houston Baptist, but it's unknown how many – if any – of the three visited campuses will be extended invitations to join the league

“I received a phone call late Wednesday afternoon from Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett, informing me of the league presidents' desire to make a campus visit to three universities, including ACU," ACU president Dr. Phil Schubert said.  "This is the next step in our process of exploring options in terms of NCAA affiliation and in determining what is best for Abilene Christian. We have not received an invitation to join the Southland Conference and haven't been told one is forthcoming. We look forward to showing our campus to the search committee, and to the discussions that will take place when committee members are in Abilene.”

ACU began this process in April 2010 and school officials have had several on-campus forums for faculty and staff to discuss findings from its research, and have met face-to-face with several key donors across the country in regards to a possible change in affiliation.

Last January, Schubert, ACU vice president of advancement Phil Boone and director of athletics Jared Mosley met with Southland Conference officials in Frisco for discussions regarding ACU's status and readiness to make a move
to NCAA Division I status.

At that time, ACU officials were told a decision by presidents could be made in early March at the league's post-season basketball tournament in Katy.  However, no decision on campus visits or expansion was made at the tournament, and the discussion about adding new members was tabled until May 23.

“The Board of Directors has spent a considerable amount of time since last summer reviewing all possible membership options available to the conference,” league commissioner Tom Burnett said. “It's been a deliberate, thoughtful
exercise that has allowed the board to consider what's best for the long-term viability of the association, not just a quick fix. The presidents were very clear in expressing their interest in learning more about these institutions, and they look
forward to these visits.”

A move to the Southland Conference would be almost like a move "home" for ACU, which was a founding member of the league in 1963.  ACU remained in the league until after the conclusion of the 1972-73 athletic year before re-classifying to NAIA Division I status and joining the Lone Star Conference.

“We are pleased to take the next step in our NCAA affiliation discussion. I'm looking forward in the next few weeks to the Southland Conference search committee getting a close-up look at our great university,” Mosley said. “While we are excited about this news, we also look forward to the upcoming 2012-13 season in the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II."

The Southland Conference is losing three members on July 1, 2012, with the University of Texas-Arlington, the University of Texas-San Antonio and Texas State heading to the Western Athletics Conference.  In July 2013, UTA and Texas State will join the Sun Belt Conference and UTSA will join Conference USA.

FRISCO -- The Southland Conference Board of Directors approved campus visits to three institutions as the league continues to examine future membership possibilities. The presidential action highlighted the conference's four-day Spring Meeting this week at the San Luis Resort and Conference Center in Galveston.

The Southland will send visitation teams to Abilene Christian University, the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of New Orleans this summer in an effort to move closer to potential membership decisions. ACU and UIW are currently NCAA Division II football-playing institutions, while UNO is a Division I independent program. Abilene Christian was also a charter member of the Southland when it formed in 1963.

Harms Inducted into College Football Hall of Fame - TAMK Football

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS---Ron Harms, who served as head football coach at Texas A&I and Texas A&M-Kingsville for 21 years between 1979 and 1999, has been selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.  The induction is set for July 20-21 in South Bend, Ind.

Harms becomes the seventh Javelina to be inducted into the Hall.  During most of his time as head football coach, he also served as athletic director.  Harms was offensive coordinator for the Javelinas in 1974 and 1975 and during that time, the Javelinas went 25-0, won two national championships and captured two Lone Star conference titles.

He had an outstanding record as head coach of the Javelina program, his times compiling a 172-72 record.  His 1979 team won the NAIA national championship and 11 of his squads took LSC titles.  The 1994 Javelinas reached the NCAA Division II national title game and the 1988, 1993, 1995 and 1998 squads advanced into the national semifinals.

Other Javelinas in the College Football Hall of Fame are coach Gil Steinke and players Johnny Bailey, Darrell Green, Dwayne Nix, John Randle and Richard Ritchie.  He was the head coach while Bailey, Green and Randle were players.

Baseball: ASU, TAMUK eliminated at regional - LSC Office

Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville both saw their seasons end at the NCAA Division II Baseball South Central Regional in Warrensburg, Mo.

ASU (40-17) opened the regional with a 7-2 loss to Southern Arkansas, and then dropped a 13-10 decision to St. Edward’s.  The Rams advanced to the regional tournament for the third time in program history after winning the Lone Star Conference championship and tournament titles. ASU didn’t lose more than two games in a row this season and won 40 games or more for the fourth time since the program was started in 2005.

TAMUK (31-18) started the regional with an 8-4 defeat against St. Mary’s, before being eliminated by top seed and host Central Missouri, 10-5. The Javelinas finished the season as only the third team in school history to play in a regional tournament.

Tennis: ACU women fall in national semifinals - LSC Office

Abilene Christian’s run at the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships concluded in the semifinals with a 5-0 loss to BYU-Hawai'i. The Wildcats impressive season ends at 26-4, as they were swept in doubles for the first time all season. ACU defeated Indiana (PA) and Lynn in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively.

 Cameron dropped its Round of 16 match to California (PA) 5-2. The Aggies finished the season with a 23-5 record, which is the winningest season in program history. Additionally, CU made its second consecutive trip to the national tournament. On the men’s side, ACU blanked Northern Kentucky 5-0 to open the championships, before falling to Lynn 5-3 in the quarterfinals. The Wildcats successful 2012 campaign ended at 21-9.

Women’s Golf: Tarleton finishes fifth at NCAA Championships - LSC Office

Tarleton State completed its run at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships at Persimmons Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Ky., with a 322 for a fifth-place finish with a 1,291 total.

The TexAnns started off in ninth place after the first round and continued to climb the standings throughout the event.  Tarleton was eighth after the second round and sixth after the third round.

Individually, Jacqueline Lau led the way for the TexAnns, shooting a 318, which tied for 16th.  Sharon Lau also broke the top-25 with a 321, which tied her for 23rd.  Jessica Pickwick shot a 326 (T-33rd), while Katy Ward finished with a 327 (38th) and Sarah Fulfer shot a 353 (61st).
Tarleton made its sixth straight trip to the championships and recorded the sixth top-five finish.

Nova Southeastern took first place overall at 1,234, with three individuals in the top four golfers, to earn their fourth straight national title.  Florida Southern (1,254), Grand Canyon (1,273) and Barry (1,284) came in just ahead of Tarleton.

LSC Showcase to air Monday on Fox Sports Southwest - LSC Office

The second episode of the Lone Star Conference Showcase will air on Fox Sports Southwest Monday, May 21 at 6 p.m.

The 30-minute magazine-style television show is part of the league’s partnership with Fox Southwest, which also includes television advertising and live web streaming.

This installment, hosted by FS Southwest’s Dana Larson with LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon, starts with a recap of the basketball and spring championships.  The next segment highlights Angelo State Athletic Director Kathleen Brasfield, who is retiring May 31 after more than 30 years at ASU.

The show wraps up with a look at the league’s NFL Draft picks.  Besides the original programming on May 21, the show will re-air on May 24 at 7 p.m. and June 25 at 5:30 p.m. The next LSC Showcase is set to air during the week of August 27th.

ASU, the LSC regular season and tournament champions, is the third seed, while TAMUK is the fifth seed in the double-elimination six-team event to be played May 17-20. Both teams are making their third regional appearance.

The Rams, who have won 12 of its last 14 games, open the tournament against No. 4 Southern Arkansas on Thursday at 7 p.m. ASU is 0-2 all-time against SAU, including a 7-0 loss this season that snapped a six-game winning streak to start the year.
  
The Javelinas face No. 2 St. Mary’s Thursday at 11 a.m. in first-round action. TAMUK and STMU split a pair of games during the regular season.  The Javelinas won 10-1 in Kingsville, while the Rattlers won 10-0 in San Antonio.  Central Missouri is the regional’s top seed and will play No. 6 St. Edward's Thursday at 3 p.m.
  
Regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 26-June 2 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The finals will be hosted by Mount Olive and the town of Cary, N.C. This year marks the 45th annual championship, and the fourth consecutive year that the finals have been held in Cary, N.C.
  
In the 2011 championship, West Florida captured its first national championship title with a 12-2 victory against Winona State.

2012 DII Spring Festival includes golf and tennis championships - LSC Office
Four Lone Star Conference teams and an individual are part of more than 1,000 student-athletes that will compete for six national championships when the NCAA, in conjunction with Bellarmine University and Greater Louisville Sports Commission, plays host to the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championships Festival on May 15-19 in Louisville, Ky.


Women's Golf
Tarleton State earned a national berth after claiming its sixth straight West Region title, dating back to 2007. The Women’s Golf Championships, consisting of 72 holes, will be held May 16-19, at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville.

Cameron’s Trey Lawson tied for fourth at the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Regional to earn a spot in the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships. The finals will be held May 15-19, at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.

Men's and Women's Tennis
The Abilene Christian men’s and women’s squads along with Cameron’s women’s team have advanced to the 2012 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships, which will be played in Louisville, Ky., May 16-19.
The Round of 16 starts on May 16, with the ACU women against Indiana (PA) at 7 a.m., while CU plays California (PA) at 10 a.m. The Wildcat men will face Northern Kentucky at 1 p.m.

ASU’s season ends in Super Regional - LSC Office

The Angelo State Rambelles softball team forced a winner-take-all final game after defeating Central Oklahoma 12-3 in game one, but could not keep the momentum going as they fell to the Bronchos 11-3 in the final game of the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional tournament Saturday at the ASU Softball Complex.

Angelo State (48-11) just missed out on winning its third South Central Regional championship in four years as the loss brings the 2012 season to an end. The loss also ends the college careers of five Rambelle players who were instrumental to the program; seniors Elsamartina Apo, Claire Molina, Jasmaine Moore and DeeshanaLynn Tafiti and junior Chelsey Walters as the Odessa native prepares for chiropractic school.

Police search for Tarleton athletes accused of burglary - Amber Ward, Stephenville Empire Tribune

Tarleton police have obtained arrest warrants for two basketball players suspected of burglarizing an apartment in a series of Spring Break crimes.  The warrants seek the arrest of Shedrick Haynes, 24, and Zachary Hannibal Nelson, 22, in a burglary of a habitation case, a second-degree felony.  The burglary at Texan Village apartments was among seven cases reported to campus police between March 7-18.

Haynes and Nelson became suspects after a Neebo Bookstore employee identified the two men as the persons who sold books taken in one of the burglaries, police records show. Both athletes gave false names when selling the books, but had used their UIN numbers, allowing the crimes to be connected to their real names.

In another twist, records show that Tarleton Police Sergeant Darren Keith was called on April 3 into Athletic Director Lonn Reisman’s office to pick up items turned into Reisman by one of his athletes. Some of these items -- a Fuji camera, two SD cards and a black case -- were identified in a police report as being stolen in a burglary.

Detective Kristie Bint used this information to obtain the arrest warrants on April 16. The athletes have not been arrested. Texan News attempted to contact Haynes and Nelson at phone numbers listed in police reports. Haynes’ phone was answered by a man who said he didn’t know Haynes. Nelson’s number was disconnected.

This isn’t the first time these athletes have dealt with campus police. Haynes was arrested on March 28 for burglary of a habitation on July 30, 2011 when property was taken from a campus dorm, records show. He was released on a $10,000 bond the following day.

Records also show Nelson was arrested on March 19 for possession of marijuana and was released that day on a $500 bond. Sgt. Keith said police have been searching for the suspects since the warrants were obtained.

LSC announces Track & Field awards

Abilene Christian and Angelo State headlined the All-Lone Star Conference awards with 14 honorees each of the 54 athletes on the list for their efforts at the 2012 LSC Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships. The awards were announced Thursday by league officials.  ACU won the men’s championship for the 19th straight year at the 2012 LSC meet with seven all-conference athletes. ASU earned its fourth consecutive women’s title behind the efforts of six all-LSC performers.

    

The list of all-conference performers includes the winner of each event at the conference meet, including all members of the winning relay teams, plus any athlete who scores at least 14 points at the meet. In all, 27 men and 25 women were recognized by the all-conference program  In addition to the announcement of All-LSC performers, the league recognized four student-athletes and two coaches with individual awards.

    

On the men’s side, ACU’s Jordan Geary earned the Cap Shelton Award as Outstanding Male Track Athlete, while the Wildcats Nick Jones picked up the Oscar Strahan Award as Outstanding Male Field Athlete. ACU’s Roosevelt Lofton was named Men’s Track Coach of the Year.

    

For the women, the Wildcats Chloe Susset claimed the Wes Kittley Award as Outstanding Female Track Athlete, while West Texas A&M’s Morgan Shelton earned the David Noble Award as Outstanding Female Field Athlete. ASU’s James Reid was tabbed Women’s Track Coach of the Year for the sixth straight year.
