The Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville men finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while the ACU women ended up eighth at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo.
The Wildcats were fifth with 50 points after winning with 68 points last year, while the Javelinas finished in sixth place overall with 44 points, the second best finish in school history behind the 1993 squad that took fourth place. The ACU women were eighth with 25 points with 17 in running events and eight in field events.
Three Lone Star Conference athletes earned individual national titles as ACU’s Nick Jones and Levance Williams won the discus and long jump, and TAMUK’s C.J. Griggs claimed the triple jump. Jones prevailed for his fourth Division II title with a throw of 196-1, to become only the third man in Division II outdoor track and field history to win his event four times and the first in the discus. Williams started the long jump with a leap of 25-11 – the best long jump by a Division II athlete this season – to win the event. It marked only the fourth time for an athlete from ACU to win the men's long jump at this meet and the first time since 1999.
Griggs had a dramatic winning performance in the triple jump. After the preliminary heats, he stood in fourth place with a personal best jump of 50-7.25, but his right ankle was bothering him and even forced him to pass on his second jump. In the finals he made a dramatic switch to take the first jump off his left foot and the results were unbelievable. After a subpar fourth jump, he popped the winning jump on his fifth attempt out to 51-9.25.
Adams State, Colo., won its first NCAA Division II outdoor title with 77 points to 73 for runner-up Lincoln, Mo. St. Augustine's, N.C., and Western State, Colo., tied for third with 54 points.
Grand Valley State, Mich., repeated as champion of the women's division with 90 points after turning back a challenge from Lincoln (79) and Adams State (59).
