One of the most successful and well-respected coaches in the history of collegiate football, Mel Tjeerdsma, announced Wednesday that he will retire following a brilliant coaching career that spanned the last four decades.
Tjeerdsma, 64, vacates his post at Northwest Missouri State University following 17 years of service and after orchestrating one of the greatest football program transformations in the history of collegiate athletics. The Bearcats were 0-11 in 1994, his first season. The team is 183-32 since with three national championships and 12 conference championships in the last 15 seasons.
"The past 17 years have been an incredible experience for Carol and me," said Tjeerdsma. "The growth and the development of the Bearcat football program have probably exceeded all of our expectations. Even though we've been blessed with an abundance of great memories on the field, the friendships and relationships that we've developed are the most important aspect of our time at Northwest."
Lady Buff Basketball Set To Play Two Top-Five Teams This Week - WTAM Sports Information
THIS WEEK – The #22 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs (6-3, 0-0 LSC) return to action this week with a pair of top-five match-ups on the road. The Lady Buffs will take on the #5 Arkansas Tech Golden Suns this Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville, Ark., before taking on the #1-ranked Delta State Lady Statesmen on Friday, Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland, Miss.
LADY BUFFS VS. GOLDEN SUNS – Wednesday’s contest will mark just the second time the Lady Buffs and Golden Suns will have met on the court, with Arkansas Tech leading the series, 1-0. The Golden Suns downed the Lady Buffs, 77-51, back on Nov. 21, 1998, in Orlando, Fla., when the two teams met in the 1998 Division II Disney Classic.
LADY BUFFS VS. LADY STATESMEN – The Lady Buffs and Lady Statesmen have met just twice, with both contests coming in post-season play. The Lady Buffs won the inaugural meeting between the two teams, downing the Lady Statesmen 77-56 in the semifinal game of the 1988 NCAA Division II Final Four. The Lady Statesmen then knocked the Lady Buffs out of the playoffs back on Mar. 24, 2009, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in San Antonio, Texas. DSU won the contest, 55-47.
LAST TIME OUT – The Lady Buffs erased a 14-point first half deficit and trailed just 33-29 at the break against #7 Northeastern State, but the RiverHawks went 14-for-14 from the free throw line in the second period en route to a 65-62 win over the Lady Buffs at home.
Junior forward Jamie Simmons notched her second double-double in as many days, but NSU’s Taylor Lewis countered with a game-high 22 points to lead the RiverHawks to the victory. Ashley Leven tallied a season-high 12 points for the Lady Buffs and WT outscored NSU 15-2 off the bench, but the RiverHawks scored 18 points off turnovers to make-up the difference.
UP NEXT – Following the two games in Arkansas in Mississippi, the Lady Buffs return to LSC crossover action with a pair of road games at Southeastern Oklahoma on Thursday, Jan. 6 and then at East Central on Saturday, Jan. 8. WT opens LSC South Division play against Incarnate Word on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at San Antonio, Texas. The Lady Buffs return home to host Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 15.
FIFTH-RANKED GOLDEN SUNS RETURN TO ACTION - ATU Sports Information
For the first time in 12 days, the fifth-ranked Arkansas Tech Women’s Basketball will again return to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 29 as the Golden Suns play host to 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M in a 5:30 p.m. non-conference contest at Tucker Coliseum.
Wednesday’s game is a match-up of the two of the top four women’s Division II basketball programs all-time in terms of winning percentage. Tech has won nearly 79 percent of its all-time games as they have posted an 828-221 record, while West Texas A&M is fourth on the all-time winning percentage list as the Lady Buffs have won 78 percent of its all-time games as they have posted a 711-200 all-time record.
The Lady Buffs, who haven’t played since suffering a 65-62 home loss on Dec. 20 to seventh-ranked Northeastern State, have won 20 or more games in eight consecutive seasons, including posting a 30-4 record last season. West Texas has advanced to 18 NCAA Division II Tournaments, four NCAA D-II Elite Eights and they have won three straight Lone Star Conference titles.
“West Texas is a very, very good program that has a lot of tradition and history, much like we have here at Tech,” the fourth-year Tech coach said. “It should be a good challenge for our team and it should help prepare us for the type of games we’ll play once GSC play opens up in January.”

Even before the announcement on Thursday that Will Wagner will be Angelo State University’s new head football coach, there was a sense that the Rams program is on the way back.
All four finalists — Wagner, Pierce Holt, Steve Warren and Todd Whitten — offered impressive credentials. The fact that such accomplished people, and presumably others who didn’t make the final cut, want the job is a sign the program is in good shape and poised to rebound.
Wagner, 36, comes to ASU from Northwest Missouri State, where he has been associate head coach of one of the most successful Division II programs in the nation. During his time at the school, it has played in the national championship game seven times, winning three titles.
It seems unlikely that a coach who is accustomed to that level of success would take a job at a school that didn’t have the potential to compete for championships.
Recruiting Tidbit - Booker played ‘big’ for Eagles in 2010 - Mike Keeney, Star Courier
Gayron Booker wasn’t the biggest guy on the Eisenhower Eagles defense, but he sure came up big during the 2010 season.
Booker played outside linebacker for the Eagles, who finished second in District 18-5A. Although he stood 5-71/2 and weighed in at 188-pounds, Booker made plays all over the field in helping his team make a return trip to the playoffs.
During his senior season, Booker recorded 52 tackles, eight sacks and recovered one fumble. That output earned him the Northeast News’ Defensive Player of the Year award for the 2010 season...
Thompson said he knows Booker’s height will probably keep him from earning a Division 1 scholarship, but he said Abilene Christian University (ACU) has an interest in him and that might be the perfect place for the deeply religious young man.
ACU may not be a Division 1 school, but it has produced a number of NFL players in the last decade such as defensive back Daniel Manning of the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Johnny Know, also of the Bears and Cincinnati Bengals running back Bernard Scott.
“I really think he can play at the next level,” Thompson said. “He can play outside or could be a good nickel back. He’s quick and smart and knows how to get to the football. He has a lot of natural instincts. He plays with a motor and was a playmaker for us he also understands the game. He watched a lot of film while he was here to learn his opponent.”

The phone kept ringing, but Chris Hagan refused to answer. He didn’t know the names of the coaches who were calling him. He didn’t know anything about any of teams they coached.
They were no-name coaches from Division II schools. And Hagan was a Division I player.
He had shown that at Rice when he started 17 games as a freshman, scored in double figures five times and was second on the team in assists. But Hagan’s Division I basketball career came to a screeching halt during the fourth game of his sophomore year. He ruptured the patella tendon and had season-ending surgery. Hagan said Rice athletic director Chris Del Conte told him that no matter what happened, he could return to the Owls after playing one season at Blinn Junior College.
“I basically shunned off all offers thinking I was going to come back to Rice,” he said.
But Bill Braun replaced Willis Wilson as the Owls head coach. And Del Conte left Rice to become the AD at TCU. Hagan’s world turned.
He found out that because he had not completed 60 percent of his major, he had not met Division I academic requirements. If he wanted to play basketball, it would have to be on the D-II level.

He faded away, like so many NFL running backs do. A quarterback, lineman or wide receiver may play at a high level into his 30s, but the repeated blows a running back absorbs take a ravaging toll on the body. And the abbreviated careers of guys like Gale Sayers and Terrell Davis back up that claim.
It’s probably the most interchangeable position in football. There’s always somebody that can run fast with good vision waiting in the wings.
Former Midwestern State running back Dominic Rhodes once defied the odds by rushing for 1,104 yards as a rookie undrafted free agent in 2001. And Rhodes, 31, is defying the odds again nearly a decade later in his third stint with the Indianapolis Colts.
Rhodes helped the Colts take one step closer to wrapping up the AFC South on Sunday by gaining a game-high 98 yards on 17 carries in a 31-26 win over the Raiders.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Former Southwestern Oklahoma State University basketball player Brandon Nichols passed away near his home last week in Houston, Texas after an eight-month battle with acute Leukemia.
Nichols, 24, played one season for SWOSU and was the starting center on a team that finished with a 21-7 record and advanced to the Lone Star Conference post-season tournament. He finished the year averaging 9.0 points and 4.0 rebounds while leading the team in blocks with 13. He was only one of three players on that team to start and play all 28 of the team’s games.
Todd Thurman, SWOSU athletic director and former coach of Nichols, kept in close contact with Nichols and his family for the past few months.
“Brandon was a very courageous person,” Thurman said. “He meant a lot to me personally, and to his teammates. That season was very special in a lot of ways. Brandon made such a big impact for us on the floor, in the locker room and in practice. He was a wonderful person, smart, funny and was a friend to us all.”
Nichols arrived at SWOSU after spending the three previous seasons at Arkansas-Little Rock, an NCAA Division I School. He played 53 games for UALR after redshirting as a true freshman. He was a member of the Trojans 2004-05 Sun Belt Conference Championship Team.
Nichols was a 2004 graduate of North Mesquite High School. He set a school record for most blocks in a season with 201 and averaged better than 15 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks his senior season. Nichols grew up in Conroe, Texas and played there as a high schooler before moving to Mesquite as a senior.
He is survived by his parents Sherri Schneider and Mike Nichols, and his two brothers, Austin and Aaron.

SAN ANGELO – West Texas native Will Wagner, the assistant head coach at perennial NCAA Division II powerhouse Northwest Missouri State University, has been named head football coach at Angelo State University, effective immediately.
Athletics Director Kathleen Brasfield announced the appointment Thursday (Dec. 23) of the seventh football coach to lead the Angelo State University Rams. She said Wagner will bring solid coaching and administrative credentials to the job because of his experience at Northwest Missouri State, one of the most successful Division II programs in the country for more than a decade.
Since joining the Northwest Missouri staff in 1998, Will Wagner has helped lead the Bearcats to 10 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) championships, seven national championship games and three national titles. During his tenure, the Bearcats were 108-8 (.931) in the 12-member MIAA.
As a player, Wagner was an All-American defensive back at Hardin-Simmons University, where he played from 1992-95 and earned selection to the university's 20th Anniversary Team in the fall of 2009. He helped lead Odessa Permian to a Texas State Championship during his senior season in 1991.
In making the appointment, Brasfield said, “I have never seen anyone present a better plan than Coach Wagner for elevating the competitiveness of a football program, not just on the conference level, but also on the national level. He's very impressive with the plan he will implement. Coach Wagner has learned well from Mel Tjeerdsma, who has developed Northwest Missouri into a perennial Division II power.
“Coach Wagner knows the X's and O's, but equally important, he understands how to manage scholarships effectively. He's able to handle budget reductions without compromising the opportunity for success. In Division II, the challenge is managing scholarships. Learning how to maximize those dollars decides whether you are successful or not. You can know all the X's and O's in the world, but if you have not done an effective job with scholarships, you won't be successful.”
Wagner succeeds Dale Carr, who had a 28-36 record in six seasons with the Rams. Wagner was an assistant coach on the Northwest Missouri team that defeated ASU, 45-14, in San Angelo Stadium in the first round of the D-II playoffs in 2005, Carr's inaugural year as ASU coach.
“I've been watching and learning from Mel Tjeerdsma for 11 years and in the last couple of years I started to figure out that I'm ready to do this,” Wagner said. “The great thing is Angelo State's history. They're in Division II, and that's what I know more than anything. They're in a great conference, the Lone Star Conference, where we're going to be competing every weekend with a top team. That's very similar to the MIAA Conference that Northwest Missouri State is in. I just see it being a perfect fit right now. It's a program that wants to get back to its tradition and its history of winning, and I believe I'm the guy that can take it the next step.”
At Northwest Missouri, Wagner first served as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons before being hired fulltime to serve as defensive backs coach, a job he held even after being named assistant head coach prior to the 2007 season.
Under his tutelage, 12 defensive backs combined to earn 18 All-MIAA honors, including Myles Burnsides, a two-time All-American who was named National Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. Northwest Missouri has finished six of the last eight seasons with at least 10 defensive players recording interceptions. In 2009, 11 Bearcats picked off 25 passes, the second-highest total in the nation. The Bearcats have averaged nearly 18 interceptions per season since 2004.
This year, Northwest Missouri finished 12-2 and advanced to the D-II national semifinals before losing to Minnesota Duluth, 17-13.
As a Hardin-Simmons Cowboy, Wagner started a record 47 games, set school records for interceptions in a season with eight and set an American Southwest Conference record for career picks with 23. He was also credited with 185 tackles and 52 pass break-ups. He stayed on as a graduate assistant at Hardin-Simmons for the 1996 and 1997 seasons.
Wagner and his wife, Andrea, have two sons, Brooks and Brayden.

Angelo State expected to name new football coach today - San Angelo Standard Times
Angelo State University is expected to name its new head football coach today, according to the school’s Athletic Communications Department.
One potential name that can be scratched off the list is Abilene High’s Steve Warren, who confirmed Wednesday to KTXS News in Abilene that he has withdrawn his name from consideration.
That leaves the three other finalists — Will Wagner, Pierce Holt and Todd Whitten.
Wagner is the associate head coach at Northwest Missouri State, a Division II powerhouse that knocked ASU out of the playoffs in 2005 when the Rams were in their first year under Dale Carr.

Abilene High football coach Steve Warren announced Wednesday that he has withdrawn from consideration for the Angelo State University head coaching position and will return to the Eagles for a 16th season.
Warren, a 1985 Angelo State graduate and former graduate assistant with the program, interviewed with ASU officials on Sunday and Monday. He said his decision was based on a number of factors.
“The Good Lord has always taken care of me on decisions like this and he did it once again,” he said. “(Abilene High) is where I’m supposed to be and I’m glad it’s turned out this way.”

Midwestern is 20th in fall edition of Learfield Sports Directors' Cup - MSU Sports Information
Midwestern State completed a successful fall season ranked 20th in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup as released Wednesday morning by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
The Mustangs sent three teams to the postseason including a national semifinal appearance by the men's soccer program to earn 83 points while cross country earned 40 points with a 17th-place showing at NCAA Division II nationals and the women's soccer program reached the postseason for the first time in program history good for 25 points in the standings.
MSU amassed 148 points which are the second most to Abilene Christian in the Lone Star Conference.
The Wildcats reached the postseason in four sports including football (53 points), women's soccer (50 points), women's volleyball (50 points) and men's cross country (45 points). The total of 198 points put ACU in eighth place following the completion of the fall.
Other Lone Star Conference institutions include Texas A&M-Kingsville at 72nd (53 points), West Texas A&M at 80th (50 points) and Angelo State at 105th (25 points).
Grand Valley State (Mich.) tops the rankings with 411 total points which includes 100 points each as the Lakers claimed national championships in women's cross country and women's soccer. GVSU also placed third in men's cross country (85 points), fifth in women's volleyball (73 points) and received 53 points for qualifying for the football postseason.
Rounding out the Top 10 is Shippensburg (Pa.) (264), Central Missouri (259), Tampa (Fla.) (224), Chico State (Calif.) (220), Augustana (S.D.) (211), Colorado Mines (208), ACU, Rollins (Fla.) (190) and Adams State (Colo.) (185).
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's.
The first Division II winter standings will be released Thurs., March 17, 2011.

ACU No. 6 in pre-season poll - ACU Sports Information
Two-time defending Lone Star Conference champion ACU has been ranked No. 6 in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball magazine NCAA Division II pre-season poll, which was released Monday.
The Wildcats – who finished 50-15 last season to record the first 50-win season in program history – lost to Central Missouri in the championship game of the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament in Warrensburg, Mo.
ACU head coach Britt Bonneau's squad returns all-America performers in centerfielder Aaron Oliver and pitcher / designated hitter Will Calhoun as well as third baseman Cameron Watten, outfielder Cameron Bankston, catchers Ian Tomkins and Abe Williams, pitchers Aaron Lambrix, Zach Sneed, Chay Lytle Kevin Justice and others in Andrew Yacek, Sky Valenzuela and Ryan Luckie.
Defending national champion Southern Indiana will open the season ranked No. 1 after posting a 52-14 record in 2010. UC-San Diego (54-8 in 2010) is ranked No. 2, followed by Central Missouri at No. 3, Georgia College and State at No. 4 and Tampa (Fla.) at No. 5.

Casazza named to ABCA Preseason Second Team for South Central Region - TSU Sports Information
ABILENE – The American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings announced their Preseason All-Region teams Wednesday, and named Tarleton senior third baseman Chris Casazza to the second team for the South Central Region.
Last season, Casazza hit a .379 average, with team highs of 16 home runs, 48 runs scored and 59 RBI’s for the Texans. He started in 50 of Tarleton’s 51 games, and also led the team with 177 at bats, 15 doubles, 132 total bases and 34 walks.

Angelo State University is expected to name its new head football coach today, according to the school’s Athletic Communications Department.
One potential name that can be scratched off the list is Abilene High’s Steve Warren, who confirmed Wednesday to KTXS News in Abilene that he has withdrawn his name from consideration.
That leaves the three other finalists — Will Wagner, Pierce Holt and Todd Whitten.
Wagner is the associate head coach at Northwest Missouri State, a Division II powerhouse that knocked ASU out of the playoffs in 2005 when the Rams were in their first year under Dale Carr.

Abilene High football coach Steve Warren announced Wednesday that he has withdrawn from consideration for the Angelo State University head coaching position and will return to the Eagles for a 16th season.
Warren, a 1985 Angelo State graduate and former graduate assistant with the program, interviewed with ASU officials on Sunday and Monday. He said his decision was based on a number of factors.
“The Good Lord has always taken care of me on decisions like this and he did it once again,” he said. “(Abilene High) is where I’m supposed to be and I’m glad it’s turned out this way.”

Midwestern is 20th in fall edition of Learfield Sports Directors' Cup - MSU Sports Information
Midwestern State completed a successful fall season ranked 20th in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup as released Wednesday morning by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
The Mustangs sent three teams to the postseason including a national semifinal appearance by the men's soccer program to earn 83 points while cross country earned 40 points with a 17th-place showing at NCAA Division II nationals and the women's soccer program reached the postseason for the first time in program history good for 25 points in the standings.
MSU amassed 148 points which are the second most to Abilene Christian in the Lone Star Conference.
The Wildcats reached the postseason in four sports including football (53 points), women's soccer (50 points), women's volleyball (50 points) and men's cross country (45 points). The total of 198 points put ACU in eighth place following the completion of the fall.
Other Lone Star Conference institutions include Texas A&M-Kingsville at 72nd (53 points), West Texas A&M at 80th (50 points) and Angelo State at 105th (25 points).
Grand Valley State (Mich.) tops the rankings with 411 total points which includes 100 points each as the Lakers claimed national championships in women's cross country and women's soccer. GVSU also placed third in men's cross country (85 points), fifth in women's volleyball (73 points) and received 53 points for qualifying for the football postseason.
Rounding out the Top 10 is Shippensburg (Pa.) (264), Central Missouri (259), Tampa (Fla.) (224), Chico State (Calif.) (220), Augustana (S.D.) (211), Colorado Mines (208), ACU, Rollins (Fla.) (190) and Adams State (Colo.) (185).
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's.
The first Division II winter standings will be released Thurs., March 17, 2011.

ACU No. 6 in pre-season poll - ACU Sports Information
Two-time defending Lone Star Conference champion ACU has been ranked No. 6 in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball magazine NCAA Division II pre-season poll, which was released Monday.
The Wildcats – who finished 50-15 last season to record the first 50-win season in program history – lost to Central Missouri in the championship game of the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament in Warrensburg, Mo.
ACU head coach Britt Bonneau's squad returns all-America performers in centerfielder Aaron Oliver and pitcher / designated hitter Will Calhoun as well as third baseman Cameron Watten, outfielder Cameron Bankston, catchers Ian Tomkins and Abe Williams, pitchers Aaron Lambrix, Zach Sneed, Chay Lytle Kevin Justice and others in Andrew Yacek, Sky Valenzuela and Ryan Luckie.

ABILENE – The American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings announced their Preseason All-Region teams Wednesday, and named Tarleton senior third baseman Chris Casazza to the second team for the South Central Region.
Last season, Casazza hit a .379 average, with team highs of 16 home runs, 48 runs scored and 59 RBI’s for the Texans. He started in 50 of Tarleton’s 51 games, and also led the team with 177 at bats, 15 doubles, 132 total bases and 34 walks.

Pierce Holt may very well bleed blue and gold.
The former Angelo State University All-American and NFL All-Pro with the San Francisco 49ers would like nothing more than to return to his alma mater as its next head football coach.
He believes he has the qualifications to do just that.
Holt was the third of four finalists to interview for the vacant ASU head coaching job on Tuesday, following Abilene High head coach Steve Warren and Northwest Missouri State associate head coach Will Wagner.
“Regardless of what happens in this process and how it ends up, I will never stop supporting this university,” Holt said. “It is basically what I am, who I am and probably what I have financially. This university means everything to me and it means a lot to a lot of people in this community.”

Todd Whitten knows, and has been successful in, the Lone Star Conference. That is one attribute that separates him from the other coaches seeking the vacant Angelo State University head coach position.
Whitten was in town on Tuesday as the last of the four finalists to be interviewed for the job. The former Tarleton State and Sam Houston State head coach and current Lamar University offensive coordinator also spoke with the media.
Whitten spent six seasons at Tarleton State, where he led the Texans to a 45-23 record from 1996 to 2003. He was named LSC Coach of the Year four times and led TSU to the playoffs in 2001 and 2003. Whitten then spent five seasons at Sam Houston State, where he led the Bearcats to conference runner-up finishes and winning records in 2006 and 2007. He spent the last season as the offensive coordinator at Lamar University.
“We had a really good run at Tarleton,” Whitten said. “I love the league and we had a lot of good kids. I got to Sam Houston and was disappointed that I didn’t do a better job. That was 11 years of being a head coach and I enjoyed every day of it.”

Signing day was a hub of activity for Navarro players Monday as 18 players will move on to four-year colleges. Several more are considering offers or waiting for grade reports, which were finalized Tuesday.
Coach Nick Bobeck said he would have liked to see some of his players get more attention but thought they made good decisions.
"I was actually disappointed with the recruitment of some of these kids," he said. "It's hard to stand out at Navarro. If a guy doesn't do a great job of evaluation, they're missing out on kids."
...Other Bulldogs headed to Texas schools include wide receivers Joe Jones and Brad Croak, who along with lineman Andre Jones will attend Tarleton State.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Dec. 21) – A split of its last two games dropped Central Oklahoma nine spots to No. 22 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Coaches’ Poll that was released Wednesday.
The Bronchos, 11-2 on the season, fell to West Texas A&M 67-60 on the road last Saturday before bouncing back to rout Eastern New Mexico 103-85 last night. UCO is off until hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith on Dec. 30.
Bellarmine (Ky.) topped the rankings, followed by Findlay (Ohio), West Liberty (W.Va.), Alabama-Huntsville and Augusta State (Ga.).
The Bronchos are one of three Lone Star Conference teams in the poll. Incarnate Word, which handed UCO its only other loss this season, is 14th while two-time defending league champion Midwestern State is No. 21.

LSC Basketball Weekly Release: Three teams remain unbeaten
Lone Star Conference basketball teams will take a break for the holidays before resuming non-conference and crossover games next week. Three LSC teams will take a perfect record into 2011 - Incarnate Word and West Texas A&M on the men’s side and Northeastern State on the women’s.
The LSC men have a 99-63 overall record so far this season, including a 53-25 mark in the South Division and 46-38 in the North. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 27-14 record over its North opponents. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 19-11 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 6-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 64-60 overall, with a 30-43 mark in the South and 49-32 in the North this season. In league crossover play the North has the advantage, 27-20. The women’s teams are currently 15-18 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 4-2 against the MIAA in the NCAA South Central Region.

The senior guard scored a game-high 23 points with five rebounds and three steals in a 67-60 loss to unbeaten West Texas A&M and came back two days later to score 33 points on 14-of-19 shooting while adding eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals in a 103-85 rout of Eastern New Mexico.

Telo was Head Coach Wade Alexander’s go-to defender this week as he was utilized to play the perimeter to stop the opposing team’s best three-point shooter. In Monday’s opponent, that was Mark Stevenson of Texas A&M-Kingsville, who was just 1-of-7 from behind the arc and finished the night with just three points. Telo’s efforts helped hold CU opponents to 63.33 points and a .387 field goal percentage last week.

UIW kept its season-opening string perfect (11-0) with a pair of wins during the week. Robinson was the team leader by scoring double points in both games and recording his fourth double-double (31 points, 11 rebounds) against Southwestern Oklahoma. Those 31 points were the second time this year he has topped 30. In the two victories he shot .640 from the field and .800 at the line.

In winning two games in the week and running its perfect mark to 11-0, UIW limited the two opponents to 34 percent shooting from the floor. Solomon paced the team with five steals as the Cardinals forced an average of 20.5 turnovers a game. The opponent’s starting guards shot but 24 percent from the field. Also, Solomon scored a game-high 21 points against Cameron to go with 8 rebounds.

Lewis paced Northeastern State to a pair of LSC crossover road wins by scoring a total of 37 points in the two outings. The sophomore guard from Broken Arrow had a career-high 22 points in a 65-62 win at West Texas A&M on Monday, Dec. 20. She was 8-of-17 from the floor, 3-of-6 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. She also had 15 points in NSU’s 55-45 win at Eastern New Mexico. For the week, Lewis was 13-of-27 (.481) from the field, 6-of-13 from the arc and perfect on five tries from the charity stripe as Northeastern State (9-0) closed out the first semester as the LSC’s only unbeaten women’s team.

Brown was a defensive wall for Aggies Head Coach Tom Webb during a two-game road trip to LSC crossover opponents. Webb brought in Brown to strategically shut down the opponent’s hottest shooter and the young guard did not let him down. Against Incarnate Word, hot shooting Katy Cooke was 4-of-5 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc for 12 points. Brown was assigned to Cooke after halftime and kept Cooke to just 5 points in the second half which all came from the foul line. In Kingsville, facing the Javelinas, Brown was assigned to leading scorers Kelly Bastow and Brenna Gonzalez after the break. In the first, Bastow scored 12 points but finished with only 15 after having to face Brown one-on-one. Gonzalez had a similar story, posting eight in the first and finishing with just 13 for the game. The pair combined to shoot 7-for-15 (47-percent) in the first but just 3-for-15 (20-percent) in the second.

Cooke led Incarnate Word to a split in two crossover games last week with a team-high 18.5 points per game. The senior from Wichita Falls poured in a team-high 16 points and pulled in a career-best 12 rebounds while adding a blocked shot and two steals in 26 minutes Monday night against A&M-C after going for eight points and four rebounds in 23 minutes Saturday versus TWU. Jackson averaged 12 points, eight rebounds and 2.5 assists a game for the week.

Williams led UCO to a split of two road LSC crossover games, averaging 28.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals a contest while shooting 57.1 percent from the field. The senior guard scored a game-high 23 points with five rebounds and three steals in a 67-60 loss to unbeaten West Texas A&M and came back two days later to score 33 points on 14-of-19 shooting while adding eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals in a 103-85 rout of Eastern New Mexico.
NORTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Vinicius Telo, Cameron University, SO, Forward, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Marianapolis Prep HS
Telo was Head Coach Wade Alexander’s go-to defender this week as he was utilized to play the perimeter to stop the opposing team’s best three-point shooter. In Monday’s opponent, that was Mark Stevenson of Texas A&M-Kingsville, who was just 1-of-7 from behind the arc and finished the night with just three points. Telo’s efforts helped hold CU opponents to 63.33 points and a .387 field goal percentage last week.
SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Tracy Robinson, University of the Incarnate Word, SR, Forward, San Antonio, Texas, Sam Houston
UIW kept its season-opening string perfect (11-0) with a pair of wins during the week. Robinson was the team leader by scoring double points in both games and recording his fourth double-double (31 points, 11 rebounds) against Southwestern Oklahoma. Those 31 points were the second time this year he has topped 30. In the two victories he shot .640 from the field and .800 at the line.

Kelcey Solomon, University of the Incarnate Word, SO, Guard, Houston, Texas, Worthing HS
In winning two games in the week and running its perfect mark to 11-0, UIW limited the two opponents to 34 percent shooting from the floor. Solomon paced the team with five steals as the Cardinals forced an average of 20.5 turnovers a game. The opponent’s starting guards shot but 24 percent from the field. Also, Solomon scored a game-high 21 points against Cameron to go with 8 rebounds.

Taylor Lewis, Northeastern State University, SO, Guard, Broken Arrow, Okla., Broken Arrow HS
Lewis paced Northeastern State to a pair of LSC crossover road wins by scoring a total of 37 points in the two outings. The sophomore guard from Broken Arrow had a career-high 22 points in a 65-62 win at West Texas A&M on Monday, Dec. 20. She was 8-of-17 from the floor, 3-of-6 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. She also had 15 points in NSU’s 55-45 win at Eastern New Mexico. For the week, Lewis was 13-of-27 (.481) from the field, 6-of-13 from the arc and perfect on five tries from the charity stripe as Northeastern State (9-0) closed out the first semester as the LSC’s only unbeaten women’s team.

Ali Brown, Cameron University, FR, Guard, Chattanooga, Okla., Chattanooga HS
Brown was a defensive wall for Aggies Head Coach Tom Webb during a two-game road trip to LSC crossover opponents. Webb brought in Brown to strategically shut down the opponent’s hottest shooter and the young guard did not let him down. Against Incarnate Word, hot shooting Katy Cooke was 4-of-5 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc for 12 points. Brown was assigned to Cooke after halftime and kept Cooke to just 5 points in the second half which all came from the foul line. In Kingsville, facing the Javelinas, Brown was assigned to leading scorers Kelly Bastow and Brenna Gonzalez after the break. In the first, Bastow scored 12 points but finished with only 15 after having to face Brown one-on-one. Gonzalez had a similar story, posting eight in the first and finishing with just 13 for the game. The pair combined to shoot 7-for-15 (47-percent) in the first but just 3-for-15 (20-percent) in the second.

Katy Cooke, University of the Incarnate Word, SO, Marble Falls, Texas, Marble Falls HS,
Cooke led Incarnate Word to a split in two crossover games last week with a team-high 18.5 points per game. She scored 20 points with six rebounds, six assists and five steals in the Cardinals first win of the season over Southwestern Oklahoma, 71-64. Cooke’s performance (17 point and six assists) against Cameron paced UIW in the defeat.

Katiya Jackson, Midwestern State University, SR, Guard, Wichita Falls, Texas, Burkburnett HS
Jackson delivered her first collegiate double-double while helping the Mustangs limit the opposition to 37 percent from the floor in wins over Texas Woman’s and Texas A&M-Commerce last week. The senior from Wichita Falls poured in a team-high 16 points and pulled in a career-best 12 rebounds while adding a blocked shot and two steals in 26 minutes Monday night against A&M-C after going for eight points and four rebounds in 23 minutes Saturday versus TWU. Jackson averaged 12 points, eight rebounds and 2.5 assists a game for the week.

Will Wagner knows how and what it takes to win at the Division II level.
That is why he is one of four finalists for the vacant Angelo State University head football coach position.
The Northwest Missouri State associate head coach was the second of four candidates scheduled to interview for the position Monday, following Abilene High head coach Steve Warren, who interviewed on Sunday.
A state champion at Odessa Permian High School and All-American at Hardin-Simmons under former Central High School coach Jimmie Keeling, Wagner has been a winner and coached winners at just about every stop he has made as a player and a leader.
“After I graduated from Hardin-Simmons, I was a graduate assistant there for two years under Jimmie Keeling,” Wagner said. “I was just very fortunate then to go up to Northwest Missouri. I didn’t know anything about them or how good they were. I got there my first year and won a national championship. I thought, ‘Hey, this is pretty easy.’
“We went back-to-back in 1999 and have been full-time since 2000. I have been very successful in all my years of coaching.”

Javelinas NAIA recording winning streak tied, but not broken. Carroll College defeats Sioux Falls in NAIA final, leaving them tied with Texas A&I. Over the past 4 seasons, Sioux Falls is 55-2, losing in the national championship to Carroll College in both 2007 and 2010. With the win, Carroll College claims its sixth national championship (all since 2002), one behind all-time leader Texas A&I. Sioux Falls has won 4 championships (all since 1996), with 3 coming in the past 5 seasons. They were the runner-ups the other two seasons as well as 2001.

David Nadeau’s 32-yard field goal as time expired gave No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth its second NCAA Division II national championship as the Bulldogs beat No. 2 Delta State (Miss.), 20-17. Minnesota-Duluth finishes the 2010 season with a 15-0 record and the top spot in the final AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Delta State closes the season at No. 2 despite being unranked in the final regular season poll. The Statesmen finished the season with a 11-4 overall mark.
Northwest Missouri State finishes the season at No. 3 after making a run to the semifinals. They are followed by No. 4 Albany State and No. 5 Central Missouri. Shepherd made the second biggest jump in the final poll as the Rams moved from No. 18 to No. 7 after finishing the season with a 12-2 mark and an appearance in the Division II semifinals.

Being in the college basketball business for quite some time, Incarnate Word coach Ken Burmeister knows the best way to go into the holiday break is on a winning note.
When that victory enables a team to maintain a perfect record, it adds a little something extra.
The holidays should be to Burmeister's liking after his No. 21 Cardinals improved to 11-0 with an 86-63 victory over Lone Star Conference North Division foe Southwestern Oklahoma State on Monday night at the McDermott Center.
Tracy Robinson led the Cardinals with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Deleon Hines scored 15 points and Eric Stewart 12.
The Cardinals also were sharp defensively, holding Southwestern (7-6) to 34.9 percent shooting while forcing 24 turnovers, including 15 in the first half.
“We're definitely happy with the record,” Burmeister said. “We're playing good defense. We're shooting the ball well. We have great leadership, especially from (Robinson) and (Stewart). It definitely helps.”

The web site, which chronicles Lone Star Conference athletics by linking with media outlets in LSC-area schools, has a purple and white T-shirt on its lsc scoop shopping link.
The shirt is in Abilene Christian colors - purple and white - and includes the phrase "93 points. Any questions?"The shirt appears to be in reference to the 93 points ACU piled on West Texas A&M in a 93-68 video game win over the Buffs in the second round of the 2008 Division II playoffs.
It probably won't be a top seller in Canyon.

ASU FOOTBALL: Coaching candidate is a familiar face - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Steve Warren first got the urge to return to his alma mater to further his coaching career almost a decade ago.
The opportunity to do just that is now upon the former Angelo State football player and graduate assistant coach as Warren is one of four finalists for the vacant ASU head coaching position. He talked to the media Sunday.
“It is my alma mater,” Warren said. “I played here. I got my coaching start here and I am excited about the opportunity to maybe come back here and be a part of something special, the opportunity to bring this football (program) back to some national prominence the way it used to be. I am excited about that. I think this is a great opportunity and I am looking forward to it.”

MINNEAPOLIS – Sacked three times on his first two drives before being rotated out for another pair of quarterbacks, Josh Neiswander could only sit and watch as his Stripes team fell behind the Stars team, 10-0, in the first half of the All-American Bowl at the Nagurski Practice Facility Saturday afternoon. When his turn came around for the second time in the middle of the third quarter Neiswander literally took the game over by calling his own plays – with his head coach Tim Hawkins’ permission – and turned in an MVP effort while leading the Stripes to a 30-10 win.
Neiswander was named the game’s top player after taking control and leading a game-tying drive in the third quarter – part of 30 unanswered points from the Stripes squad. Garrett Tidwell was named the Stripes offensive MVP after he and Neiswander carved through the defense, and Angelo State fullback John Norcott also contributed to the win. Neiswander turned the game around when he asked his head coach if he could call the shots.
“I started calling my own plays and we started dominating that team,” Neiswander said. “I was running the Angelo State offense, but I had to put it in the terminology that we’ve been working on all week. I got sacked three or four times on our first couple of drives and when my turn came up again I said, ‘Hey, let me take care of this one.’ We put together an 8-10 play drive with me calling our plays from ASU. I was moving Garrett around and just peppered the ball into him a lot.”
Official stats were not available Saturday night, but Neiswander thinks he completed 12-of-15 passes in the game, including a touchdown to cap the third quarter drive and tie the contest at 10-10. From there, the Stripes team kept rolling and piled up 27 second half points en route to the victory. Neiswander was pleasantly surprised when he asked Hawkins for the keys to the offense.
“He said go for it. If you’ve got it, then do it,” Neiswander said. “I had a headset in my helmet and he was talking to me from the sidelines – it was pretty cool. I started calling our stuff and we just wrecked shop on them. It was really nice that our coaches had enough confidence in me – it shows a lot of respect. He knew what he was doing, but he knew what I was talking about and knew that I have been coached really well.”
Neiswander was quick to point out that even as a quarterback and offensive coordinator at the same time, he dialed up a run play during the drive in the third quarter.
“We had like 10 passes on that drive and on the fifth play I called a run,” Neiswander said with a laugh. “I was proud of myself for making that one run call.”
Neiswander and Tidwell didn’t have much opportunity to play pitch and catch during the 2010 season as Tidwell served almost exclusively as a kick and punt returner en route to earning Daktronics First Team All-America honors, but the duo looked comfortable together when the game was on the line.
“All the guys were like man, you guy have such a good connection, but I only threw five passes to Garrett all season,” Neiswander said. “He’s such a good athlete and a gamer. He knows how to run routes – he was a quarterback in high school – and finds openings in the zone. He’s a scrappy guy who makes things happen.”
Tidwell didn’t have a touchdown in the game, but sealed the end with a block on a 60-yard touchdown run by the Stripes in the second half. Norcott was the only fullback on the team and was on the field for most of the game, even taking a few snaps at tight end.

The Texas A&M-Commerce women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season last week when it slipped past Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference crossover game.
The Midwestern State Mustangs will be trying to keep them from getting used to that feeling as well as evening their record in crossover contests when the two teams hit the floor today in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Tipoff for the women’s-men’s doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the men’s game to follow.
MSU also is coming off a win as it beat Texas Woman’s University on Saturday to improve to 3-5 on the season. The Lions have had a week off since their 64-63 win over the Zias.
“They are very athletic and they like to run,” MSU coach Noel Johnson said of the Lions. “They have two kids that will drive right by you. So we’re going to have to defend the drive and do a much better job blocking out. They knocked off Eastern New Mexico — which is a pretty organized team.
“We have to have some consistency.”

However, in order to accomplish the rare feat, the Buffs will need to handle RiverHawks team riding a small wave of momentum from two straight wins.

McMurry aims to take step up to Division II - Sam Waller, Abilene Reporter News
An idea that has been floating around the McMurry athletic department for a while was given the go-ahead Friday, when the university’s board of trustees unanimously voted to approve an application for membership in NCAA Division II.
Now comes the process of making it happen.
Athletic director Ron Holmes said Saturday before the McMurry-SMU basketball game the proposal of changing divisions and granting athletic scholarships has been discussed among coaches for several years, but has only been seriously studied over the past year.
He said a desire to improve the university both academically and athletically was the driving force behind the decision to formally pursue such a move.
“You always try to better yourself and that’s what we want to do,” Holmes said. “You try to better yourself academically first, then athletically second. That was the impetus, to find a way to make things better.”
Holmes said one immediate benefit for the school would be better retention of student-athletes, which becomes magnified on a campus where more than 30 percent of the student body participates in at least one varsity sport.
“We’ve longed to find ways to make it where kids would come to McMurry and stay four years,” he said. “The retention was something we wanted to improve. Anyone’s retention rate could always be improved. We started with retention and that will be a huge positive. We will improve our retention.”
While the process of McMurry moving to Division II is getting started, the proposal is being received favorably within the university community.

McMurry University president John Russell announced late Friday that the school’s board of trustees unanimously approved a plan to apply for membership in NCAA Division II.
McMurry, a charter member of the American Southwest Conference, which includes crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons, has competed in NCAA Division III since the 1996-97 school year. In an e-mailed press release, Russell said McMurry intends to remain in both the ASC and Division III until the guidelines for transition are met bases on the NCAA timeline and requirements for reclassification.

Navarro Junior College has informed us that two Bulldogs have signed with Tarleton State. Joe Jones, a 6-1 205 defensive back out of Carthage and Brad Croak, a 5-9 165 wide receiver out of Vidor. Croak had 24 receptions for 204 yards and 2 TDs, while Jones had 35 tackles and 2 interceptions.

Johnson, a sophomore from Richardson Berkner, played in three more games and finished the season on the field with the Cardinals in the conference championship game against eventual national champion Navarro.
According to TVCC, the board of trustees’ sole responsibility in hearing Johnson’s appeal was to determine if he received due process. After making that determination in the affirmative, his original dismissal was put back into effect.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: City will host LSC crossover tourney - Nathan Wright, San Angelo Standard Times
The City of San Angelo Parks and Recreation Department announced Thursday that the Texas Bank Sports Complex will host the 12th Annual Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament in April.
All 15 teams in the LSC that participate in softball will converge on San Angelo’s newest sports facility April 1-3. The tournament will consist of 40 games and allow teams from the North Division to play teams from the South Division.
The crossover tournament has recently been held in Durant, Okla., the home city of Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said other coaches in the conference were looking to move the tournament south from its previous sites in Oklahoma and the Metroplex. He spoke with those in charge of the Complex and helped them put a presentation together.
That presentation resulted in the tournament ending up in San Angelo.
“San Angelo is the perfect place to host this tournament,” Scott said. “Our fan base continues to grow, and San Angelo is a softball city. This is a great opportunity to showcase some great softball.”

The city of San Angelo has added another sports tournament to its repertoire thanks to its central location, moderate weather and, of course, the Texas Bank Sports Complex.
Since the multimillion-dollar sports complex opened in the middle of last year, San Angelo has hosted more than a dozen softball and baseball tournaments. That’s up from almost none the previous year.
The new tournament in town is the 12th annual Lone Star Conference Women’s Fast Pitch Crossover Tournament, which will take place at the complex for three days, April 1-3. The tournament has been hosted in Durant, Okla., the past several years. San Angelo beat out Durant, Richardson and Victoria to host the 15-team tournament.
At stake is an estimated $250,000 economic impact, according to figures from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Four Finalists for Angelo State Head Football Coach Vacancy to be Available to Media
SAN ANGELO – Angelo State University Director of Athletics Kathleen Brasfield and the football head coach search committee will welcome four candidates to campus next week for final interviews. Pierce Holt, Will Wagner, Steve Warren and Todd Whitten have been identified as the finalists.
Pierce Holt
Holt is a two-time All American defensive lineman for Angelo State (1986, 1987), Holt played 8 seasons in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, twice being selected All-Pro, and at one point was the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997 and the LSC Hall of Honor in 2000.
Will Wagner
Wagner has been on the staff at Northwest Missouri since 1998, first as a graduate assistant for two seasons, then full-time as the secondary coach. He is still the secondary coach, and was name assistant head coach in 2007. While at Northwest Missouri, the Bearcats have won three national championships and finished as the runner-up four times. He played his college ball at Hardin Simmons, in Abilene.
Steve Warren
Warren, another former ASU player, is the head coach at Abilene High School. While at Abilene, his teams have compiled a 138-45 record, winning the 5A D-II state title in 2009. Prior to his arrival in 1996, the AHS had 8 consecutive losing seasons.
Todd Whitten
Todd Whitten is the offensive coordinator at Lamar University after previously serving as the head coach at Sam Houston State and Tarleton State. Whitten compiled a 25-28 record in 5 seasons as the head coach at Sam Houston State. He fared much better in the LSC at Tarleton State, with a 45-23 record over 6 seasons, qualifying for the playoffs twice, advancing to the national quarterfinals in 2001.

ngelo State University has released a list of six applicants for its vacant head football coach position to the lscscoop.com website.
The website obtained the information through a Freedom of Information request sent to ASU Director of Communications and Marketing Preston Lewis.
The ASU Athletic Communications Department said the list includes applicants the school had at the time of the request and is not a comprehensive list of applicants. The search committee is still evaluating that list.

Coming out of HS in 2006, he graded a 65 by ESPN, Rivals 2 star, Scout 2 star, originally signed with Colorado State. Rawlings had 31 receptions for 436 yards and 5 TDs.
Scout is also reporting that Snow QB Colter Smith has been offered by Texas A&M-Commerce (and Central Missouri). Smith threw for 1,088 yards with 13 TDs and 3 Ints, completing 62% of his passes in 7 games. Smith saved his best for Snow's bowl game against Iowa Western, completing his first 13 passes, en route to a 22-34 performance for 309 yards and 6 TDs, 5 in the first half.

Abilene Christian receiver Edmund Gates was named to the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ All-American Team, which was announced Wednesday.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior from Vernon led the Wildcats with 66 catches for 1,182 yards and 13 touchdowns, helping ACU win its second Lone Star Conference title in three years. Gates was the LSC South Division receiver of the year this past season, and he was named second team all-America by Daktronics earlier this month.

Texas A&M-Kingsville senior linebacker Tressor Baptiste was named to the 2010 American Football Coaches Association Division II All-America first team on Wednesday.
It was Baptiste’s second All-America honor in as many days after earning a second-team spot on the Daktronics team.
Baptiste played a key role in the Javelinas’ defense that finished first in the nation in rushing defense, allowing a school-record 57 yards per game. Baptiste had 66 tackles, 40 of which were a team-best solos.
A&M-Kingsville has been represented a total of 33 times by 29 players on the team. The Javelinas had at least one player named to the All-America team for 18 consecutive seasons (1986 -2003), the longest streak of any Division II team. Northwest Missouri State has the longest current streak (15), from 1996 to the present.

Junior offensive lineman Amini Silatolu made history as the first Midwestern State player ever named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America team, which was released Wednesday.
Silatolu anchored MSU’s front unit, which paced the way for the Lone Star Conference’s best rushing attack, ranking 16th in NCAA Division II at 213.5 yards per game. He transferred to MSU from San Joaquin Delta Junior College, where he was voted to the California Community College Coaches Association’s first team in 2008. He also has been named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 4 first team and All-America second team.

Williams had a dominating two games as No. 15-ranked UCO beat Angelo State and Abilene Christian, averaging 30.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.0 blocked shots while shooting 55.6 percent from the field. The senior guard scored a season-high 35 points and had three steals in an 85-83 win over ASU, hitting a game-winning 17-foot jumper with 3.1 seconds remaining after tying the game at 83-all on a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left. He came back with 26 points, five rebounds, four blocks and four steals in an 81-53 rout of ACU, scoring 19 first-half points to put the Bronchos in control.

Hagan erupted for a school-record 50 points to lift Midwestern State to a 91-82 LSC crossover win over Cameron Monday night at Aggie Gym. The Sporting News Preseason All American connected on 17 of 26 shots from the field including eight 3-pointers and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line while scoring 21 in the first half before closing with 29 in the second. The senior guard from Houston went for a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting with three treys in the Mustangs’ 67-40 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon in Weatherford. Hagan tallied 71 points in 70 minutes to average 35.5 points a game while shooting 62.5 percent from the field (25-40) and 55 percent from the arc (11-20) as the Mustangs knocked off two teams previously unbeaten on their respective home floors. He set LSC season highs in points (50), field goals made (17), field goals attempted (26) and 3-point field goals made (8). He is averaging 28.8 points per game and shooting 62 percent from the field (44-71) including a 50-percent clip from the arc (15-30) during LSC crossover play. It was the first 50-point performance in the storied Midwestern State basketball history and bettered a 48-year-old record of 46 points set by Roger Ellis on Feb. 27, 1962 then matched by NAIA All American Earl Beechum versus Monmouth in a national tournament contest on March 8, 1966.

Umeh was instrumental in the Cardinals defensive efforts last week, which included wins over Southeastern Oklahoma and East Central to remain undefeated. Against SE, he held the three starting guards to a total of 10 points on 5-15 shooting from the field, while recording five steals, which set a personal high and tied a team individual high. He also handed out three assists and pulled down six rebounds. UIW won their ninth straight game to open the season versus ECU, with Umeh helping to limit the Tigers to a .377 field goal percentage.

Wright was part of a stingy Northeastern State defense that limited two LSC South opponents to just .269 field goal percentage (.119 from 3-point range, and .583 from the FT line). She had nine rebounds, four steals and one block as the team gave up an average of 42 points in a pair of crossover wins at home against Abilene Christian (60-44) and Angelo State (67-40). The No. 7-ranked RiverHawks remain unbeaten at 7-0.

Since losing teammate Joni Unruh to injury, Simmons has stepped up her game and has proven that she can be the new leader on this team. Simmons averaged 22.5 points a game last week while leading the No. 22 Lady Buffs to a pair of victories over LSC North Division opponents. The junior forward tallied 22 points in an 80-45 win over Texas Woman’s last Thursday, then followed it up with a 23-point effort against Texas A&M-Commerce in WT’s 79-71 victory over the Lions. Simmons, who currently ranks 20th in the nation in field goal percentage, shot 60% from the field this week, tallied 17 rebounds (8.5/game) and had two blocks as well.

Herrin had four steals, a block and six rebounds in last week’s victory at Texas Woman’s to go along with an 18-point performance. She followed with an 18-point, three-block, six-rebound performance against Texas A&M-Commerce. Her play helped limit the opposition to 54 points per game and 36.9 percent from the field on the two-game road trip.

After six games, ASU is still searching for its first victory of the season. The Rams are off to an 0-6 start, the second-worst start in the history of the program.
However, none of those losses has been by more than eight points. And two came in overtime — one even in triple overtime.
The Rams’ next chance to get their first win of the season is Saturday when they host Southeastern Oklahoma.
They will do so with the Lone Star Conference’s leading scorer (LaMarshall Corbett) and leading rebounder (Ridge McKeither) and one of the LSC’s highest-scoring offenses.

Just three days after outscoring every NCAA player in the country, Chris Hagan will take the home court tonight and try to help Midwestern State keep two streaks alive. The Mustangs will be going for their eighth straight win of the season and their 33rd consecutive victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State in a 7 p.m. tipoff.

ngelo State University has released a list of six applicants for its vacant head football coach position to the lscscoop.com website.
The website obtained the information through a Freedom of Information request sent to ASU Director of Communications and Marketing Preston Lewis.
The ASU Athletic Communications Department said the list includes applicants the school had at the time of the request and is not a comprehensive list of applicants. The search committee is still evaluating that list.
The names released to the website are Valdosta State defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen, Northwest Missouri State offensive coordinator Adam Dorrel, Blinn Junior College head coach Brad Franchione, Michigan Tech offensive coordinator Eric Leuter, Northwest Missouri State defensive coordinator Will Wagner and former ASU All-American Pierce Holt. Coming out of HS in 2006, he graded a 65 by ESPN, Rivals 2 star, Scout 2 star, originally signed with Colorado State. Rawlings had 31 receptions for 436 yards and 5 TDs.
Scout is also reporting that Snow QB Colter Smith has been offered by Texas A&M-Commerce (and Central Missouri). Smith threw for 1,088 yards with 13 TDs and 3 Ints, completing 62% of his passes in 7 games. ACU WR Gates catches all-America honor - Abilene Reporter News
Abilene Christian receiver Edmund Gates was named to the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ All-American Team, which was announced Wednesday.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior from Vernon led the Wildcats with 66 catches for 1,182 yards and 13 touchdowns, helping ACU win its second Lone Star Conference title in three years. Gates was the LSC South Division receiver of the year this past season, and he was named second team all-America by Daktronics earlier this month.
Javs' Baptiste All-American again - Corpus Christi Caller Times
Texas A&M-Kingsville senior linebacker Tressor Baptiste was named to the 2010 American Football Coaches Association Division II All-America first team on Wednesday.
It was Baptiste’s second All-America honor in as many days after earning a second-team spot on the Daktronics team.
Baptiste played a key role in the Javelinas’ defense that finished first in the nation in rushing defense, allowing a school-record 57 yards per game. Baptiste had 66 tackles, 40 of which were a team-best solos.
A&M-Kingsville has been represented a total of 33 times by 29 players on the team. The Javelinas had at least one player named to the All-America team for 18 consecutive seasons (1986 -2003), the longest streak of any Division II team. Northwest Missouri State has the longest current streak (15), from 1996 to the present.
MSU's Silatolu named 1st-team All-American - Times Record News
Junior offensive lineman Amini Silatolu made history as the first Midwestern State player ever named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America team, which was released Wednesday.
Silatolu anchored MSU’s front unit, which paced the way for the Lone Star Conference’s best rushing attack, ranking 16th in NCAA Division II at 213.5 yards per game. He transferred to MSU from San Joaquin Delta Junior College, where he was voted to the California Community College Coaches Association’s first team in 2008. He also has been named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 4 first team and All-America second team.

Breaking News - Angelo State Head Football Coach Candidates
We requested a list of applicants and candidates for the Angelo State football head coach position. We just received the following list from Preston Lewis, Director of Communications and Marketing for Angelo State University.

Joe Cauthen
Has been at Valdosta State since 2007. VSU allowed 17.2 points and 292 yds per game in 2010, 22.4 pts and 343 yds in 2009, 18.6 pts and 305 yds in 2008 and 17.6 pts and 326 yds in 2007. He spent 8 seasons at Texas A&M-Commerce, with his final year's team giving up just 15.1 pts and 258 yds per game. Prior to TAMC, he spent two years at Stephen F. Austin and a year at Trinity Valley Community College.
Adam Dorrel
Offensive coordinator at Northwest Missouri since 2007. In 2007, NW averaged 37.4 pts and 441 yds per game. In 2008, it was 40 pts and 444 yards. 2009 saw the Bearcats average 42.1 pts and 475 yards. Finally, this season the averages were 34.3 points and 420 yards. He also coaches the offensive line, a position he began in 2004.
Will Wagner
Wagner has been on the staff at Northwest Missouri since 1998, first as a graduate assistant for two seasons, then full-time as the secondary coach. He is still the secondary coach, and was name assistant head coach in 2007. He played his college ball at Hardin Simmons, in Abilene.
Brad Franchione
In his six seasons as head coach at Blinn, the Buccaneers have compiled a 54-13 record with two national championships. He spent a season at Texas A&M-Commerce in 2004, as the defensive line coach. He has also had tenures with Bacone, Tennessee-Martin, West Alabama, East Central University, and Fort Scott JC. He is a graduate of Pittsburg State.
Erik Leuter
Just finished his second year as offensive coordinator and fifth overall at MTU. In 2010, the Huskies averaged 30.5 pts and 384 yards per game, while in 2009 it was 22.4 pts and 356 yards. Prior to MTU, he was at Adams State for a season as a GA, and at Grand Valley for 2 seasons as an assistant for the offensive line and wide receivers.
Pierce Holt
A two-time All American defensive lineman for Angelo State (1986, 1987), Holt played 8 seasons in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, twice being selected All-Pro, and at one point was the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997 and the LSC Hall of Honor in 2000.

Joe Cauthen
Has been at Valdosta State since 2007. VSU allowed 17.2 points and 292 yds per game in 2010, 22.4 pts and 343 yds in 2009, 18.6 pts and 305 yds in 2008 and 17.6 pts and 326 yds in 2007. He spent 8 seasons at Texas A&M-Commerce, with his final year's team giving up just 15.1 pts and 258 yds per game. Prior to TAMC, he spent two years at Stephen F. Austin and a year at Trinity Valley Community College.
Adam Dorrel
Offensive coordinator at Northwest Missouri since 2007. In 2007, NW averaged 37.4 pts and 441 yds per game. In 2008, it was 40 pts and 444 yards. 2009 saw the Bearcats average 42.1 pts and 475 yards. Finally, this season the averages were 34.3 points and 420 yards. He also coaches the offensive line, a position he began in 2004.
Will Wagner
Wagner has been on the staff at Northwest Missouri since 1998, first as a graduate assistant for two seasons, then full-time as the secondary coach. He is still the secondary coach, and was name assistant head coach in 2007. He played his college ball at Hardin Simmons, in Abilene.
Brad Franchione
In his six seasons as head coach at Blinn, the Buccaneers have compiled a 54-13 record with two national championships. He spent a season at Texas A&M-Commerce in 2004, as the defensive line coach. He has also had tenures with Bacone, Tennessee-Martin, West Alabama, East Central University, and Fort Scott JC. He is a graduate of Pittsburg State.
Erik Leuter
Just finished his second year as offensive coordinator and fifth overall at MTU. In 2010, the Huskies averaged 30.5 pts and 384 yards per game, while in 2009 it was 22.4 pts and 356 yards. Prior to MTU, he was at Adams State for a season as a GA, and at Grand Valley for 2 seasons as an assistant for the offensive line and wide receivers.
Pierce Holt
A two-time All American defensive lineman for Angelo State (1986, 1987), Holt played 8 seasons in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, twice being selected All-Pro, and at one point was the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997 and the LSC Hall of Honor in 2000.
